[Q] Rooting a boost mobile phone? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first post but I have been reading a lot here for the last 2 weeks and cannot find the answer.
I bought a epic 4g already setup ondn boost mobile and when I went into clockworkmod recovery I found out that it was version 3.0.0.6 and it converted the file system to EXT4 and bricked my phone when it rebooted. Next I returned the phone back to stock with oden and SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar file then updated to 2.2.1 then the phone worked grate again but it is not rooted anymore. So my question is will rooting the phone mess up my boost mobile setup and if not should I use One Click Root & Recovery v2.5.5 or version 3.0.0.6 or what next???????
any help would be appreciated.

Because CWM3 uses EXT4 you have to flash a rom after you install CWM3 that's why it wouldn't boot. If you root with 2.5 you don't need to convert to EXT4.
I believe you should be fine with rooting and not messing up your Boost settings since you had to Odin back to stock. You basically answered your own question.

when you root your boost epic it would not at all throw off your boost settings at all, I have the same setup as you and rooting took no more then 2 minutes. Here is a a step by step video.

you will need to resetup your mms settings... other than that you will be fine...

Is there an update.zip for the DK28 Modem or you have to use odin?

Hey guys I have a quick question. My buddy has the Samsung Epic 4g and was running from store stock DK18 build. He recently updated to DK28 using the leaked update.zip method. So far his phone is working fine with the exception of the gps not working. I dont own a samsung and after reading through all this info im super glad cause I see nothing but problems from what I am reading. Things are so much easier with my OG moto droid haahhahahah. He wants to root his phone and install a custom rom.
But most of the roms I look at say you need the dk28 modem installed first. Was the DK28 modem installed with the DK28 2.2 update zip? Or it wasnt included with that? How can I tell on his phone if he has the DK28 modem? Is the only way to get the DK28 modem on his phone by flashing it using odin? I find it hard to believe that there is no update.zip for it by now. If anyone can help me out with this or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Would much rather just find the update zip for the dk28 modem so I dont have to mess around with odin since I dont own a samsung.
There are way to many threads on here regarding this issue so its kinda hard to sort through them all. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Go to Settings=>About Phone. This will tell you you're baseband version. If it says DK28 at the end you're set...otherwise read on.
I just flashed Bonsai 2.0 and the modem was not included. I used the signed modem update afterwards from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861341
Without the DK28 modem you won't be able to get a signal through the cell radio. Wifi worked but the device was switching airplane mode on and off every half second. Flashed the modem AFTER the rom...I don't recommend this... and all is well.
I was also coming from DI18 and stock rom with a modified kernel.

Ok ok awesome I was thinking that about the baseband version but wasnt sure so figured I would ask. So he does have the dk28 at the end. Thats good. One less step he has to take. How do you like Bonsai? I was actually looking at that one for him. That will probably be the first one he will try.
One more question. How did you root the phone? Did you use the z4root app and then download rom manager and flash clockwork that way? Or did you use one of these one click root programs that I see in this forum? What do you think the easiest way is for him to get root and clockwork recovery on his phone?
Thanks for all your help Zetter I appreciate it.
The best way to root is to use the one-click. It will give you root, recovery, and the recovery redirect.
Rom Manager will not flash clockwork without a custom kernel and z4 doesn't install recovery or the redirect.

For one, it allowed the use of multiple recoveries. For example, for a short period, many of us were running cwm 2.5.1.0 AND 2.5.1.2 since one only supports rfs and the other only supports ext4. Booting into recovery via the death-grip brought you to 2.5.1.0 and the redirect allowed you to reboot into 2.5.1.2.
I believe the redirect is also what allows programs like quickboot to reboot to recovery mode without using the death-grip.

Awesome thank you for the info Digi. We used the one click root method and now we have root and when holding the volume , camera and power button we go into clockwork recovery 2.5.1.0. Is there a special button or combo you need to hit for the redirector to work? Or it reboots you into the correct clockworkmod automatically depending on what filesystem RFS/EXT4 you are currently using? Sorry to be such a pain. This stuff is kinda new to me since I dont own a samsung. I really appreciate your help though.
Ok I after reading the bonsai rom thread I found the new oneclickroot with clockwork3. So I tried that one now and was able to reboot into clockwork 3.x.x.x
and install the bonzai rom. Had a problem after the install completed. The phone wouldnt boot up just got hung on the black samsung screen. I know in the Bonzai thread it said not to wipe but after the phone hung I booted into recovery and and did a wipe then installed the bonzai zip again and the phone booted up. GPS still doesnt work so that kinda sucks. But I guess its all trial an error. I will keep reading. Thanks for the help.
Is there a way to check on his phone if he has the ext4 filesystem or the rfs. I am guessing since he has cw3 and was able to boot into the new ext4 bonzai rom he converted to the ext4 FS but would like to know if there is a way to check.

Like you said, by installing CWM3 you have automatically converted to EXT4...BUT if you really want to check: from adb you can type 'adb shell mount' without the quotes. Or you can type 'su' (enter) then 'mount' from terminal emulator. You should see EXT4 as the fs type for /system, /data, and /cache.

[Q] Need help updating please

Hello, I've been using this website til this past december and I love it but stopped messing around with my phone because of graduate school. So the last thing I did was just update to stock dk28 modem without rooting it. Now I'm trying to catch up and need help to refresh lol.
Anyways, so yeah i'm on 2.2 (not rooted) currently and trying to update to the new syndicate rom. As the installation instruction says, I need to use odin to install the TAR and PIT and I know that is after rooting my epic. So is the rooting method the same as it was for 2.1?
Last question for now to get started, I really dont understand this part of the installation instructions in their thread properly "Then, use the CWM 3.0.0.6 One Click to install Clockwork and convert to EXT4.", so if anyone can please help me I will be more than grateful. to break down the questions, how do I install that new clockwork after updating to EB13? and how do I convert to EXT4? what is EXT4?
Sorry for all the questions andn using such a long thread just for help. Thanks.

1) odin to full eb13
2) run the cwm3.0.0.6 one click
3) reboot into recovery using 3 finger monkey grip. It well auto convert to ext4
4) flash the rom. (wipe data, cache, dalvik 3xs)
5) boot the phone (start up animation may look word)
6) boot into recovery again
7) flash the rom again (wipe data, cache 3xs)
8) your good to go

CWM One Click is a multi-purpose package. It: a) roots your phone, b) installs a flashing/backup/recovery package and c) converts your filesystem to ext4.
Do a search on how to install CWM. It's a matter of hooking your phone to a PC in USB debugging mode and then running a "run.bat" script. Now your phone is rooted and reboots, but you won't notice much different at that point (other than the Superuser App). If all you want is root, you're done.
If you want to flash a ROM then you boot into the recovery software (using the 3-finger technique).
This is where the gotchas start: The first time you do this, your file system will be automatically converted to a new filesystem: ext4 (it takes about 5 to 10 minutes). At this point, you need to be prepared: once it's converted to ext4, make sure you have an ext4-compatible ROM on your SD card that you can flash right then and there. At that point, I don't know if you can even reboot back into your stock ROM (I've always flashed a new ROM immediately, so I don't know).
Learn about the backup and restore mechanism in CWM, it's your friend.

You can run on stock eb13 with ext4 but you must flash at the minimum a ext4 compatible kernel.

[Q] Issues flashing MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip on stock eb13

Disclaimer:
I am new at this, I have read a lot and followed a lot of tutorials. I may not use terms correctly so please forgive me.
Problem:
I am trying to flash to MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip from stock eb13 on my Epic.
This is my first attempt at such a thing, i was able to successfully root my device via noobnl's instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
I am able to get rom manager installed and give it SU rights, etc. I got the full rom from the developer’s autism awareness site which is the full package. I make a backup through rom manager and reboot into CWM recovery.
I clear the data/cache 3 times and proceed to update through the zip on sd card option and point it to the midnight rom zip.
It says it is successful, i reboot and I become stuck on the samsung loading screen, I let it sit for 10min just to make sure, but no dice.
I then boot it back into recovery mode and try again multiple times which it is much faster this time but they all fail to load past the samsung load screen.
I go into the CWM recovery and attempt to load my backup, which hangs at installing cache every time.
So I am left with just booting into CWM.
I then resort do using odin to get back to eb13 and I am back where I began.
Sorry for the wall of text but I am lost and have tried to read a lot so I didn’t come on here asking random questions, but I have been working on this for a long time now and figure a forum post was due.
It wont work with CWM 2.5 and RFS. It requires CWM 3.0 and EXT4
After you ODIN back to EB13 go here:

I see now.
I used Rom manager to update my CWM to 3.0 and thought that would work with his first bullet, but I thought wrong.
I guess I dont understand RFS and EXT4, I thought rooting was rooting and noobnl's directions were the easiest for me to follow.
Much appreciated chris5h for the fast reply.
I will test this out when I get home from work.

Do you know how to Odin back to stock? Follow this thread for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Then when you restore, only restore data under advanced restore.
If you used Mybackup root or Titanium you can restore your apps from there, otherwise you should download them again from the market.

This is the easiest way I have found to root your phone with CWM3 and EXT4. If you don't mind using Odin I would suggest it strongly. I used it and installed Midnight ROM v4.2 and had no problems at all.
Well that was it. Thanks a lot everyone for your help. It took me like 10minutes once I had everything downloaded, much better than the hours upon hours yesterday
I officially have midnight ROM installed and I am rocking some nice speeds on my epic! Finally nice to see just what the phone is capable of.
Glad you got it. I wish people would stop using rom manager for the epic. It doesn't flash cwm

Question re Clockword Mod Update for Samsung Epic

I tried to post this on the actual thread about this Update, but I was not allowed because I had not posted 10 times previously.
Anyway, I am new to rooting Android phones….new to android phones for that matter. I have had the Samsung Epic 4G for about a month. I have been looking into rooting the phone, finally decided to go for it. I downloaded the filre for Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.5/6 - UPDATED FOR EB13 from this site. After doing one run of that bat file and getting stuck on the startup screen, I realized I needed to find a compatible ROM and Kernel and install them before rebooting.
I reset the phone to default settings, using the info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909384 and then I used the kernel
from the original update thread, Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13, and the Bonzai ROM from their website. This time, the install worked properly, and when my phone rebooted, the firmware is listed as Bonsai/Kernel_v4.01. So I wanted to backup and uninstall some Samsung Bloatware from the phone, and as I understand it, the Titanium Backup is the best way to do it. Well, I installed it, and it has consistently said the program could not acquire root status. I clicked on the “problems” icon, got busybox and upgraded superuse, and that did not effect anything. I even reflashed the Bonzai Rom, but the end result is the same, I am still getting that same message. Since I have replaced my Rom and have installed Superuser, I have to assume I have rooted the phone, so what could be the problem here? The app SetCPU also says I do not have Root Access. So I am not sure what to do at this point.
Sounds like a failed root:
Root again with the oneclick 3.0.0.6, power off, 3 finger boot and ext4 will be put on automatically. After ext4 installs install bonsai before rebooting.
Sent from Bonsai 7.0.3
Is there a difference between onclick 3.0.0.6 and the one in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612,which is labelled 3.0.0.5/6? Because, if not, that is pretty much what I have done already.
Same one.
I would odin to eb13, odin ec05 modem, root, boot to recovery and allow ext4, flash bonsai 4.0.1. Can't remember if 4.0.1 adds ec05 modem during flash, but if it does you can skip the ec05 odin (sorrry, but my mind has been on 4.1.0 for the last week).
The odin process will get rid of the kernel you currently have. Flashing the rom doesn't do anything to the kernel. The odin process will give you a nice clean slate to workv with. If your phone wants to do an ec05 OTA update during this process please tell it later and don't do it.
Suggest you peruse the Bonsai Forum as you will find a lot of treats that will be able to help you. Http://www.bonsaigeeks.com

Recovery issues on a new s3

Just putting this out there for someone to help a few of us. I just purchased a new s3 for my son and was able to root it but when we Enter a custom recovery either cwm or twrp neither internal or external storage is recognized. Hoping if I spill this to the masses someone can help.

I've seen this issue now posted in the TWRP thread as well as the CWM thread. I don't think there is a solution for it yet; has anyone gotten a log of what is happening? Is it only happening on the Sprint variants?
This has happened to me just recently only my external sd card was recognized & I tried to flash several ROMs and none would boot. Thank God that's where I place my ROMs. I ended up having to completely wipe my internal memory for it to boot... im ready for a new phone now smh

There are many threads on this issue. I know there are a few Devs working on modifying recovery to work with the new ones. Just hang in there. It'll come soon enough. Flashing a Rooted rom Via ODIN does work for atleast using root apps and bloat removal. It's not alot but atleast it's a start.

Virgin Mobile variant
I also have this problem :/
I got my Virgin Mobile variant a couple days ago and flashed CWM without issue over Odin. But when I go into CWM it won't/can't mount anything. I figured it was an issue with Virgin Mobile's MD7 variant so I used rwilco's One-Click .exe to flash my phone to Rooted Sprint's MD4, again that went off without a hitch.
I then re-flashed CWM and same problem. I tried TWR as well with the same result. I'm stuck on Touchwiz until this problem gets sorted out
Please, someone smarter than me (this group is in abundance) figure this out...my head hurts.

If you are on touchwiz, just download a rom over wifi...then boot into recovery and flash it. Just because you can't mount doesn't mean you can't flash.

You have to have something to flash it to. Since nothing will mount at all, there is no where to put the files.
I have this problem also, and you can't do anything in recovery. I even tried wiping from recovery and it says it can't mount anything to wipe!

I just came over from the Evo 4g and could not flash a custom recovery because i didnt access full root . however i was told to use Flash image gui and it worked to get custom recovery on the evo ......but given the new security patches and the fact that i myself have no custom recovery if i brick my phone, i am a bit hesitant to try it on the gs3 .

You won't brick your device while installing the recovery. But the issue seems to be that Samsung or Sprint has done something to all new devices shipped over the last month which do not allow to mount the phones storage in recovery. You are able to root and flash via odin but recovery won't mount storage so you can't flash anything via recovery.
