flashed SRF 1.1.0 a couple days ago (first time rooting and all -- yeehaw!), so this is a n00b question
i know that for that, i had to data data, cache, and dalvik cache
i've also flashed the Vision kernel, which ... seemed like it didn't require wiping data or cache or dalvik cache
i've also flashed an impaled keyboard tweak and that one seemed to require wiping just cache and dalvik cache, but not data (as i recall)
so... i'm just confused, and wondering... when do i know if i need to wipe data, or just cache/dalvik, or none at all?
i just flashed the AOSP screen lock zip .. didn't see any instructions, so i figure wipe cache and dalvik, but not data (didn't want to lose my texts was my thinking)... and i just made that up. and that seemed to work. but i figure if i knew the rules of thumb, i'd feel better like i knew what i was doing
any clues / insights would be super appreciated!!
The only time u wipe:
1.
Data/Cache/Dalvik
For a rom flash that says on the rom thread wipe wipe wipe
2.
Cache/Dalvik
Is mainly when u flash themes its reccomended
3.
As for kernals and other mods unless it says to wipe then you dont need to...
Nice info so far.
After you have done this a while you can start drawing from your brain through osmosis and you will understand: if it doesn't work the way you want....EXPERIMENT.

the above post is correct, sorta.
anytime u flash something that mods /system its good practice to wipe cache and dalvik cache.
flashing a kernel, u will want to wipe cache/dalvik cache just to be safe. it prevents any sort of incompatibility between kernels.
my 2 cents

If you went and wiped cache only, not data, and installed a new rom, would all data remain? What exactly is this cache that nandroid wipes?
I'd like to install a rom for a friend but dont want to completley wipe his phone. I just want to install the virtuous rom, which is basically the stock 2.2 update rom and would like to keep all his data on the phone. would just wiping the cache work? I know some people just install without wiping but would wiping cache help?
And I know a wipe is always better, thats what I do on my phone. But its not mine and would like to save his data.
This is kind of a newb question.
Usually I wipe dalvik and cache between ROMs, but I remember reading somewhere that old program data may be left over in /system or /data or some such thing that may cause FCs and other unpleasantries.
So, should I wipe anything other than dalvik/cache for a "cleaner" install? Or is it just paranoia?
Thanks.
Do a full wipe. Data/cache/Dalvik
You should always wipe data (or system reset), and cache, and Dalvik. Some people do each twice in a row, but I really think that's a bit strange.
I'm anal. I do a User Data/Factory Reset, then each sub category except SD Card individually, with cache and Dalvik Cache twice using Amon Ra.
Honestly... just as others have, I have flashed quite a few roms and my Evo has been rooted shortly after release. I honestly have been lucky enough to not have as many issues as others have in these forums. With that said I always wipe cache and davlik when flashing anything. I only do a full wipe when - I also use Caulkins format all.. Others do these multiple wipes but I have never had an issue with Caulkin
1. If I have FC's after a flash
2. I am going from Sense to AOSP or MIUI in any order
3. If I want to start from fresh
Now I have flashed over every one of Decks roms from A-Z with no issues at all. My personal feelings are you do what makes you feel comfortable since either way may or may not cause you issues.
I use MyBackup Root for restoring
VR_SuperWipe is a great tool to use as well
Just looking for a noob clarification. I am clear that when you flash a new ROM one should do a super wipe or with TWRP factory reset, system wipe (and I guess internal memory wipe) and afterwards cache wipe and davlik cache wipe, and fix permissions.
But my question is if one is applying a patch, like the agps patch, or some rotation patch, customized keyboard, and the like, does one also need to do all the post-wiping and permission fix? And more precisely, is it safe to install several zips at once, or should one install wipe, let it sit for 10 minutes, and repeat for each patch installation?
Thanks.
Superwipe will clear your ROM, so you probably shouldn't do that after the GPS patch.

No you don't have to do a full wipe for a patch installation ...you only do it for Roms but sometimes there are patches which make you wipe data for specific apps(the one the patch changed )but if the dev didn't say anything you don't wipe

Usually when you go from one ROM to another you want to clear cache, dalvik-cache, clear data (factory reset). This will give you a fresh new slate. While a lot of ROM suggest the same process, you really need to read each of their documentation. then read 3x more. The one time that you don't may be an expensive lesson if you are unlucky. For most patches or radio flashes you don't need to do anything. Again read the documentation and then reread 3x more. Always do a nandroid backup.
for me, everytime i flash something...i would always wipe cache and dalvik. it sometimes remove unwanted errors.

Same here, plus a fix permissions for good measure.
TDJ put out a cache only wipe script as well. If you are using CWM you can use those. No need to on TWRP.

I like Derek's cache wipe because it does cache, dalvik, and fixes permission all in one swipe

yes do all for the cleanest install, I only do this if switching ROMs, or a developer tells you too in his updated thread. Some do it after every update. Basically I just overwrite old ROM with new update, which doesn't erase your data(always wipe dalvik and cache prior to doing this). Wiping data erases everything you've done to the newly installed ROM. Sometimes not doing a clean install even from the same ROM update can cause issues with certain apps that are reading your data. I had this issue with one app last update to jellybomb jb ROM.
Assuming you mean factory reset when u say wipe data. If u actually choose the "wipe data" option it will wipe internal sd.
But yes all 3 should be wiped, however factory reset usually wipes cache and dalvik-cache too. So factory reset by itself should do just fine
Hey guys,When I rooted my GS3 I wasn't sure how but kinda stumbled on having it done. When I did it I'm sure I didn't do a factory reset, or wipe the dalvik cache either,is this called a dirty flash? My question is if I want to RE root my phone, can I just simply follow the same procedure even though it's rooted already, and then re flash the WS Rom?..Thanks and please understand this is all new to me so any and all help is greatly appreciated..Phil
There is no need to Reroot. Yea, you did a dirty flash. A clean flash involves wiping cache, dalvik, data, and system. Sometimes it's a good idea to wipe your internal storage as well, copy everything you want off of it and then wipe. I always wipe everything 3 times, just habit. Then flash away!
Thanks, so I can just do a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and then re flash my rom? Cool, could this have anything to do with my battery life being bad after this?.. thanks again.

Factory reset isn't enough, you need to wipe data and system as well. As for the battery, anything could be the issue. A clean flash would help.
Update
Update.. I wiped my cache, wiped my dalvik cache, done a factory reset and system wipe ( I guess that's what it's called), and then reflashed the Wicked Sensations Rom, and my phone is operating much smoother. I read that after a new rom flash your battery should be re calibrated so I installed a battery calibrator. I'll post back in a few days with a report on whether or not there is a difference.
