[Q] How to delete GPS data (like in SGS)? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
After using a stock rom modified by mike1986 (ARHD 3.3) I've decided to go to CM7 Final. I love CM7, I have no problems with it so far, I've done all wipes (data, cache, dalvik, system, sd-ext), but I didn't wipe GPS data (or maybe I'm wrong...). I would like to clean gps data just like I was doing it in my Samsung Galaxy S by entering by code to gps test menu and deleting data of gps. Is there any way to do the same in our DHD? I'm asking because cold fix of my gps is not as good (so fast) as on ARHD 3.3. It takes much time to fix without aGPS and yet longer without aGPS. Once it is connected, it is very good, accurate etc.
Thanks for any help, best regards.

From the market:
Gps status: / menu / tools / manage gps state / reset / download.
Or
gps test: / menu / clear aiding data / inject extra data
You will need a WiFi or data connection for the a-gps data download on each occasion.
After dl the a-gps data, run the app, shouldn't take long for for first fix if you have clear view of the sky.

I don't have this option in GPS Test application, but it is better IMHO than GPS Status, so could you tell me more precisely where I can find it? Thanks one more time!

GPS Status -"Reseting & downloading gps state" is the same as GPS Test - "clear aiding data & inject extra data".
Maybe the GPS Test doesn't work for your phone, but at least GPS Status does, which in my opinion is the better app due to the extra gadgets. Just go into the app menu / settings........ leveling tool, fix to first gps fix, brightness lx, altitude, keep screen on (handy is the fix takes a bit)

Is there a program called "gps status" installed on your phone? I'm curious because I've seen a lot of people mention gps problems and also mention that app at the same time.
I used that app to use tools reset then reboot and that did not work

You can try this to see if it works.
1. Uninstall GPS Status
2. On your phone, go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All>Maps and then click on Clear data
3. Reboot into Clockworkmod recovery
4. Clear cache and Dalvik Cache
5. Reboot
6. Start Maps first before anything else.
Hope that works for you!

There are known issues with CM7, namely GPS issues; everyone is at a bit of a loss as to the actual cause which is causing the delay in fixing.
Your best option, if you need GPS, is to use a stable ROM and not an RC or nightly (as CM7 is); RCs and nightlies are known to have issues, they are released by the devs in order for the more tech savvy users to help them find bugs.

This. And OP you should go check out the nightly thread for CM7 and post there. There is a good 2 pages of discussion per nightly on JUST the GPS issues everyone is having lol. You'll get more precise answers and help there.
I am now using Ginger Villain 1.5 ROM and my GPS lock comes in seconds., Thank you so much for everyone who helped me find a solution. This is a very big relief to me. Thanks again!!
For some reason, no matter which roms I use the Navigation doesn't seem to work though. I've tried MIUI, Virtuous, CM7, and I even reverted back to stock rom I backed up and the navigation never seems to detect my gps. In maps, the GPS locks my location fine, but turn by turn direction doesn't seem to work.
Could someone maybe point me in the right direction?

Are you sure you are using GPS in maps and not your WIFI (which is mapped by google...) to position yourself?
Turn WIFI off, get outside in the middle of your garden and then start maps. Does it position you to the spot or does it stay inaccurate? If it's the latter, your GPS never (?) worked and you got positioned by the location of your WIFI.
What is your radio version (26.0x.xx.xx) and which ROM are you on exactly?
GPS fix? Try flashing radio.
Had the exact same issue, found that all my GPS issues were tied to radio. Flash back to most recent stock version and see if that fixes it. Worked right away for me, regardless of GPS Status, cache cleansing, etc. YMMV

Using my HSPA network (no wifi) and Google Maps "My Location", the accuracy is 600 meters. I'm not sure if that's considered working, but the most frustrating part is that Navigation always just says Searching for GPS. I started off from stock radio radio rom post OTA, then tried to flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959488
People said it helped, but tt didn't. Now I'm back on the one listed as "Vision_RADIO_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809.
Rom is currently QND MIUI 1.3.5 version 1.3. But liked I said, none of the roms seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: I just realized what you meant. I turned off the "Use Wireless Network Feature" and my GPS DOESN'T work! Any way to fix this???

Flashed latest radio and got instant GPS lock (8 satellites) on CM7 nightly #15. Didn't work before with shipping radio.
Latest radio I'm using btw is 12.28h.60.140f_26.06.02.27
Also, ymmv, I've heard some people saying they got big battery drains going to the latest radio, and also some had the same result going to the AUS radio (which apparently has good service).
@symbolism: Ugh, I have no idea about MIUI, but the latest radio does/should fix GPS problems on the latest CM7 nightlies. Anyone else experiencing the same on MIUI in any of the MIUI threads...?
@martonikaj: the AUS radio *is* the latest radio It's the 26.06.something... And I'm one of those experiencing excessive battery drain. It seems to be the connection to the network (Network standby) which sucks my battery empty...

Possible ICS ROM GPS workaround

I was able to gain GPS lock in an ICS ROM without flashing a GB ROM. I performed this on Calk's E4GT2 1.2 ROM with FC22 Modem (FC18 kernal). I did a fresh install and confirmed that I was unable to get GPS lock in Google Maps and Nav.
I was able to achieve lock 100% of the time within 30 seconds after using this procedure. I got this idea from the way people have been tricking thier GPS to work: with a GB flash. I figured that here must be a GPS cache or buffer that is holding data - but I am no expert.
You will need these apps: GPS Status (market), FasterFix (forums or market), and TeleNav GPS (backup from Sprint ROM or maybe market (IDK)).
At each step of this procedure, see if you are getting lock in Maps/Nav. If so, good for you. If not keep following the procedure.
1) First, see if you are getting lock in Google Maps/Nav (duh).
2) Install the apps.
3) Trick #1: Use FasterFix to set the North American Server (try for lock).
4) Trick#2: Load GPS Status go to Menu>Tools>Manage A-GPS state. There are two options. "Reset" is likely not useful. "Download" installs helper data into your GPS cache. Use this Download feature. (try for lock).
5) Trick#3 Load TeleNav GPS. Input an address and start navigation. The status bar at the bottom should say "WEAK GPS." This will go away eventually as TeleNav GPS achieves lock.
6) Trick #4 At this point, I was able to get lock in Google Maps/Nav right away. Later, I wasn't able to get lock. I did the procedure above and let Google Navigation continually stay locked for 5 minutes or more (to get data in the GPS cache) and moved around (just around my building). After this I was able to get lock 100% of the time in different locations, all several miles apart.
I am guessing that this works because TeleNav GPS is a better GPS program than Google Nav and uses the GPS radios more effectively. You should be able to use TeleNav GPS for Trick #4, too (getting data into the GPS cache).
Of course, the advantage to this method is that you don't have to flash any ROMS. Less flashing means less likelihood of getting a bricked phone. The disadvantage is that it takes a bit of time.
I look forward to seeing if anyone else can get this method to work. I also look forward to any comments on the technical aspects of this.
Interesting. I've always just made sure I got a lock before flashing ICS.works every time lol.

I flashed a GPS fix zip a few Weeks ago that I found on the blazer ROM thread that worked nicely. (not just for blazer tho, just saw the link mentioned there) It just adds a file onto your system folder or something. Too lazy to search on my phone, but that might be another option if this doesn't work.

if you have gps lock on a GB rom and then flash over to ICS it seems to solve the issues people were having getting/keeping lock on ICS, its an older solution from the ICS leaks but it works, for whatever reason...

Using phone gps where there is no tmobile network.

Last friday i went somewhere there was no tmobile network at all. Not even att.
I tried to use my gps (navigation app) and it keep saying searching for satellite and keep saying that without doing anything. Map was also not working!!!
How can i use my gps on such place?

You try to pre map it in google maps first? I find that works.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
You need to use a map app that doesn't require data, and has pre downloaded maps already on phone.
Try Sygic from Google play, it is something along those lines
You have to anticipate being in an area with no service and pre cache it like another user said. Go to maps, settings, labs and check pre cache map area and cache your anticipated route
I put my phone on air plane mode and turn on gps(to try gps;here is full network) and i search some place and it keep saying searching.
Means didnt work on mine ;(

I'm not sure what you're saying. If you're going to be using your phone as a gps in an area with no signal, you have to pre cache the area in an area with signal or wifi first. Then you can just rely on the GPS in that pre cached area.
Your GPS should be able to find satellites regardless of your lack of service. A good app to check on how your GPS is doing (# of satellites, accuracy, etc) is GPS Test. As for the maps, that question seems to have already been answered.

You can't. If you want navigation you have to have data unless you pre cached it beforehand in an area with data.
Yes u can, but only using the method I posts above. ^^^
That's the same thing as I was saying. If you want navigation, you have to have data at some point. Whether it's to download an app or pre cache maps, you cannot start in an area with no data and no preparation and use navigation.

Not really, once u download the app and maps using wifi on initial setup of your phone, u don't need data to use sygic. It uses your phones GPS in combination with downloaded maps, no active data connection required. Its core function is entirely different from Google navigation app, which requires a live connection

If he had access to data or wifi in the first place, he could have pre-cached the Google map. The point is, there is NO service now, and without any data at all there is nothing that can be done. Make sense, bud?

No seriously, provide a little more information and we can help you. There are lots of different gps tweaks. What version/ROM are you on? Carrier? Country?
I have the same problem (4.2.2 Stock). GPS just doesn't work. I tried a lot of stuff (including factory reset)... and nothing.

If you haven't done already: verify all location settings are turned on in the settings menu as well as in t the Google settings app. Download GPS status app. Go outside. Fire up the app and let it try to acquire. If that doesn't work, in gps status reset agps data, download agps data and try again. Did this work?
If you're rooted, you can just flash a better radio. That's what I did and it has improved drastically.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345
If it's a fresh fix it can take up to 5 or 10 minutes at least, outside.
Start maps and make sure gps is attempting to acquire location and just wait. But be outside.

I would imagine coincidence.
Clear AGPS data with GPS Status as mentioned and use FasterGPS to change your region to North America or wherever you live. That should provide you with a faster fix.
My GPS suddenly on the fritz as well
Had the GSM Gnex about 10 months. Approx 10 days ago I start noticing the GPS status bubble in the notification bar (not filled in). I've messed with it, used a couple of the tools mentioned in this thread, no help. I've done power off, factory reset last night, all no help. It appears slow to find sats, never acquires. Stock 4.2.2 unrooted.
Any chance reloading 4.2.2 would help? Any advantage to doing so over factory reset?
Still under warranty I guess, but really prefer to solve myself if possible.
Thanks!

No, as mentioned in my original post, it slowly seems to find a couple satellites sometimes (last night in hotel running "GPS test", but never acquired).
Maps don't acquire. Today, inside or outside at lunch, couldn't even get it to find a satellite with "GPS status" app. The circle just spins and it says "looking for GPS location". I only gave it about 90 seconds outside as I was walking.

I assume you have an active sim and the phone has data service?
One last diagnostic - try to let the gps acquire outside for up to 10 minutes. If that doesn't work I'd recommend flashing back a factory image. If the factory image doesn't work you've got a hardware issue.

Yeah, SIM/phone works fine, just sent a test email now w/wireless off to ensure data is good, it arrived.
I'll try to reload JDQ39 tonight after work, already downloaded it last night.
Thanks for the help/recommendation.
