Is there a way that when I root my g2 that I can unlock for use with ATT or whatever? Or will I have to get a code?

Use gfree. And next time, use Q&A.

Well you can always do the gfree method or call t-mobile and tell them your going overseas. Then tell them that you have another sim card that you will use. They will give you the unlock codes in the next day or two. Oh yea wrong section bro.

unlock it like everyone else dude, use GOOGLE and search for network unlocking one x, theres at least 30 sites i just counted, some ya dont need to pay, payment is taken by calling a premium rate phone number, average call cost, £5 to £10, but thats what itd cost anyway to unlock it.

If you are a 3 month(90 Days) old customer, then call them and they will unlock it for free.
this applies for all phones except IPHONE

not entirely true. i was a 14 day customer when AT&T gave me my unlock code.
but then i've read stories of people being AT&T customers for years, and they were refused an unlock code for their S3.
just try your luck. if you don't want to call, there's always online chat too. this is what i did.
The problem is i am a tmobile customer.

how did you get the phone in the first place?
did you buy it from someone? if you bought it from someone, the previous owner would had to have unlocked it (i think).
did you win it? AT&T should be able to unlock it if you can prove you won it through a contest.
otherwise, you'd have to pay through a third party company to unlock it. google for websites that will unlock it for you.
Tell them you're going out of the country temporarily and that you want to use a sim card there. Maybe they'll do it.

I am looking to unlock my t989 but don't want to pay for it since its not absolutely necessary but I was wondering if there was a tool or way you can do it for free on your own

This is a very common question. In fact there was a thread last week about this very thing. Search my friend.

Search is your friend
Just call T-Mobile and tell them you want to unlock it. They'll tell you about international offers but just tell them you need to unlock because you're sending it to another country if they ask why. That's what I did to unlock my other T-Mobile phones.
Anyways its free and they'll send you an email you'll provide with the unlock code

My parents are going to England. We live in the US. I used the cyanogen/xda method to root.
Is it already carrier unlocked? I only have Tmobile sim cards, unfortunately, the new sim will come from England. So I'd like some verification that it's unlocked before they take it on a trip.
How would I unlock it if it's not? I'm running a recent andromadus rom
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
I think I used gfree, which seems to unlock it, I'm going to try to get a sim from something non-Tmobile.
Open to suggestions about how to test unlock
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
To check if your phone is sim unlocked you can run the gfree check through adb, or you could borrow a friends sim card from another carrier.
