They are both the same. EVDO is a protocol of 3G.
To explain a little further
Verizon network = CDMA
AT&T = GSM
3G for CDMA networks use EVDO
3G for GSM networks use EDGE

Exactly right. And to my understanding, EVDO has theoretical lower data speeds than GSM 3G.
So does this go for all CDMA phones...Sprint and Verizon? Do they use the same 3G bands so (theorectically) a Verizon 3G phone should work on Sprint 3G?

Yeah, but you have to know someone that works at sprint.
if you know someone at sprint get them to activate your phone's serial number on the sprint network. Something sprint frowns upon, and most local stores wont do it for you. But yeah its possible, just not worth the effort.
It would be easier to get on metro pc's network then sprints
Most cdma phones support both 3G bands but some only support one band.

I'm thinking about trying it with my Incredible 2. I just wanted to make sure it (Incredible 2) supports EvDo...because I know thats is what Sprint uses for 3g.
Sounds like it would work *if* I could get the esn registered.

Yeah, when I used to work for [well-known retailer redacted], it was really easy for us to do with the automated system--but that was back in olden days, when a tri-mode phone (on VZW) was a Feature. When I later worked for [different well-known retailer redacted], it was still possible for us to do it if we could get in touch with cooperative sprint reps, but it wasn't nearly as trivial.
More recently, talking to one of my acquaintances who currently works in mobile retail (ha!), I got the impression that it was sort of like the iPhone on T-mo was--they've been hurting for so long that they're willing to look the other way, even if it's officially frowned upon.

Meaning you could possibly have usage of it overseas, on other gsm carriers on different bands.
You could use the phone on t-mobile because they are gsm, but not sprint, as they're cdma.

That's correct. Only T-Mobile uses the GSM network that AT&T uses, but they use them on different bands so the high-speed data is typically only going to work on one network or the other. Sprint uses EVDO and Verizon uses CDMA (if I remember correctly), so phones for each of those networks will ONLY work on that network.
I tested my unlocked Nitro on an H20 wireless sim (which just piggybacks ATT) and it worked fine. The icon was even SAYING. I had 4G. A lot of 3rd party wireless companies are still using att technically, but great as a cheaper data alternative that avoid contracts.
I plan on using this phone off contract with a carrier like that once my Verizon deal expires in February.

Does anybody notice that Verizon is now using a Sim card, just like AT&T and T-Mobile? That's because their LTE network runs on the Sim Card and not built into the phone, like CDMA...
So technically, yes, you may be able to insert a verizon LTE card into your phone, and it might work, but you most definitely won't get their LTE connection.
You know what, I should try this at work tomorrow. My coworker has a Rezound. we can switch Sims and see if it works on both phones.
Make sure you have the proper LTE APN settings for each carrier or you won't see LTE or squat!

But, my question is how well will my data/voice coverage be on T-mobile? I know the phablet uses the 1900Mhz spectrum.
I also know T-Mobile has some 1900Mhz spectrum but I've been wondering about My hometown of ATL, GA.
Anybody here in the ATL metro area? How's your coverage? I'd hate to drop $500+ for a device I can't really use.
I cant remember where I read it but I think that data will only be edge. I hope somebody corrects me if Im wrong but I might wanna wait and see what the new LTE model has in store.

You will likely be restricted to 2G(edge) only. The N5100 supports the 1900mhz frequency, but not the 1700mhz. Support for both are required for 3G/HSPA+ service on T-Mobile.

Not exactly true! TMo US has historically used the split 1700/2100 AWS band for 3G, meaning a device needs to support both bands for 3G access. However, since TMo got hold of some spectrum at 1900MHz from AT&T, they've been re farming to provision 3G over that band.
What this means is if you have a device that supports 1900MHz *and* you are in an area where TMo has re farmed the spectrum, you should get 3G.

Sort of. It's not so much that TMobile got a hold of the spectrum from AT&T as much as they've always had it, but it was only used for GSM(aka EDGE aka 2G) service. Yes, they quite a bit from that failed merger which had sped their plans along quite nicely. You're right that the y're refarming/repurposing that frequency for use on their faster data networks but... correct me if I'm wrong, my understanding is that the refarming is being done to support LTE? As the 5110 lacks an LTE antennae, it won't be able to make use of it.
OP, to find out if you're in an area where this refarming is being done check out this website.
Doesn't Metro PCS use the same LTE bands that the Verizon HTC One supports? I'd like to use the One with Metro PCS but I'd like to make sure that it would work properly - especially a good data connection and from my research the Sprint HTC One wouldn't have 4G on Metro. Also I know Metro PCS will flash the phone for me to use on their network but do they gimp the web use on it so that the data usage is a bit limited? Am I wrong or should I go ahead and buy the phone outright and have it flashed over?
Nope, not possible. Verizon mainly uses 700 MHz (band 13) for LTE while MetroPCS uses AWS (band 4). Even though Verizon is testing AWS LTE in a few markets, I'm not sure if the Verizon One even supports that band.
If you want a One, why not get the T-Mobile version instead? They acquired Metro a few months back and are going to merge the two LTE networks while shutting down CDMA. Look at their coverage map now and you'll see it's an exact duplicate of T-Mobile's.
Hello, I have a Verizon phone, which I unlocked and I am using with MetroPCS sim card. Everything works except I don't have 4G. I have internet but not 4G. Some ideas how I can fix that and actually use the 4G? Thanks!

Read the post above yours. It has the answer. You cannot enable a band that the phone doesn't have in it's radio. Verizon band 13 is different than band 4.

the only success ive had with flashing a Verizon phone to metro was 3g data only. i was never able to get LTE to connect and i tried everything i could think of.
The CDMA editor only let me go so far but i know you can get 3g and evdo to work on their network with some elbow grease and free time.

Yes, because LTE is its own technology. LTE, GSM and CDMA are each their own technologies, each completely different from the other in a multitude of ways. That's what makes one not compatible with the other, but with the advent of LTE it also made it much more cost-effective for device manufacturers to include 4G support for all major networks (provided the device supports the necessary bands and the carrier allows it, of course)... so yes, LTE should work flawlessly.
The specs on the LG Official Website for Sprint LG G8 shows it has all the 2G, 3G, and 4G bands on Cricket except it's missing B30 for 4G:

Yeah thats what I thought too but even after changing the network mode and restarting still not getting 3g data
Yes you can dial *#*#4636#*#* , go to phone information or network, look for preffered network, then select wcdma preferred, it will switch to hspa+, do note there will be no indication, only a 3g symbol on the bars. if you download network info app, it will let you see that you are indeed on hspa
Ok after many attempts to bring up my 3g inwas able to do so by going into ##data# and resetting the apn then boom 3g icon popped up. Weird because the apn was correct in the first place prior. But thanks now it works

LTE. If you don't get good speeds (about 10Mbps) then change it to GSM. This is something I actually have to remember to do if I'm outside the house because I actually get more consistent performance inside my house using 3G HSPA+/GSM. On HSPA+ it goes to is 6Mbps which is plenty usable but normally it runs at 10Mbps which is more than enough for Full HD streaming whereas if I use 4G LTE under the same condition I'll either get 30Mbps or 1Mbps depending on the time of day and/or if the network is congested. 1Mbps is definitely not usable for anything but streaming at horrible quality or browsing basic webpages.
