SetCPU widget stops updating? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the titles states, I use the SetCPU widget and find that it stops updating after a while (after which, I'll have to remove and re-add). Is there a fix for this?

That has been happening to me and I haven't found a fix. I just stopped using it. It's a shame too because I used it a lot for checking the temperature, making sure I wasn't running too hot.
Maybe you can try reflashing the kernel.

did it on every rom even stock i have used. i stopped using setcpu, it caused more problems than good

confirmed here too, the widget stops working for me after it's been on charge for like an hour. The status bar/notification bar icon works though (but no temperature)

its the app and the widget itself, for the longest time i had this problem when i was using my n1 and running cm6 and not only that, when i had it set to a certain freq. i go back into the app and it would say its clocked at 800 max, but i had it set to 110, i would have to adjust the freq bar to set it back to that.. i email the dev bout it all he said it was not set on boot, which i replied thats no the issue on hand as the phone has been booted up for awhile, and i manually set my OC, i never got a reply back after, so i check set on boot, and after bout an hour.. i go to setcpu and same issue
my target is set at 110 but its saying its maxed at 800, this also set on performance to always be on that OC, i told the dev again. and still no response so i gave up on setcpu, and glad the Cyanogen made built in cpu govnor

Its the widgets, my data signal widget takes a crap and freezes too. Setcpu works fine even when the widget freezes

If running cm7 just use the built in settings. I used setcpu with off screen prifles being slower and others but it actually made my phone run like crap. Battery life has been generally the same without using setcpu so I killed it. If u are running cm7 I wouldn't bother with it.
Love the Overclocked "nonsense" CM7

[Q] SetCPU Superuser Permissions

So I'm on a visionary temp root, overclocked with setcpu. Ive set up several different profiles but I've noticed that my battery life with the profiles isnt as good as other users have claimed.
I have noticed that when i open setcpu sometimes a little message will flash up saying that setcpu has been given superuser permissions. Does this mean that prior to opening the program, it didnt have permissions? If it in fact did not have superuser permissions, could that be why my battery life is less than expected? (i.e. The program didnt have permissions and thus couldnt use the profiles to slow down cpu speed upon screen off, etc.) The message does not come up every time I open setcpu, but it seems to come up when I havent opened the app recently.
Any ideas?

From my understanding, you only set it once. i had set a widget because i thought set cpu had to be running. But i deleted it because if you think about it....superuser app already has the permissions set, and when you open setcpu it shows the current speed.....if it wasnt working it would show 800mhz then KICK into 1 ghz?....thats what i think. You shouldnt need to worry.
Great, thanks for the response.

same here. from time to time this popup comes.
anyway i cannot see any benefit from running setcpu as the profiles are not working for me.
i tried setting up screen off profile. this never triggers.
i leave setcpu deinstalled now. battery life is good so far

Good question. Can't find anything in logcat.
set notifications.
on the magic you could see him switching profiles right after turning on the screen
you wont see it on the g2
I agree, something is fishy with this. EVERY time I open setcpu it gives me the su permissions granted window like its not being saved in memory

EDIT: After shopping around on the market I came across an app called "CPU Tuner". The UI is nice and has roughly the same customization as setcpu if not more. It does take a bit of getting used too but i'm more than willing since the profile notification actually cycles with this app vs. setcpu. I'll give it a shakedown tomorrow as it's getting too late here to test.
cpu tuner doesn't work for me.
in profiles, it just shows 700mhz to 800mhz, which makes it useless as i want to underclock to 200 when screen is off.
That toast pop-up is nothing to worry about, its just something that has featured in the last couple of SU builds, it doesn't mean your app is not working.
I just turn the notification off in the SU settings.
I can now confirm that the screen off profile is not working correctly. Before going to sleep last night, my phone had a charge of 99%. I did not have anything running (no wifi, bluetooth, sync, etc.) and I woke up to 81% battery. It never killed that much overnight before overclocking. We gotta get this fixed.

My phone has been on screen off for the pat 5 hours....and drained only 2% battery life.....i dont understand why it doesnt work with some peoples phones??!!. is it different cause im using a desire z and yours a g2?...i HARDLY doubt that would be a problem :S..
have you tried the widget?.when going to running services, my setcpu app has been running for ever. aka profiles and setcpu working.

Running the setcpu widget on my phone caused instability issues at higher clocks (feeling ballzy w/ flippy's 1.8 kernel). After removing the widget my profiles were hit and miss for some reason.
As far as the battery issue goes, anyone running CM RC2 and earlier might want to check out nightly 36, apparently there was a memory leak causing battery drainage ( I don't know anything about what it means but common sense leads me to believe a leak is bad lol). If anyone is still not satisfied with setcpu I highly recommend CPU tuner.

Yes I have the widget on my homescreen. Weird that so many people get different results
Could the scaling be giving people varying results? I don't even really know what they do, I have mine set on ondemand. Would someone mind sharing what exactly the different scalings do?

Centered around the OG Droid but basic concepts still stand.
- Just picked up an app called SuperPower, had it a while back and had issues..but it's been update a lot since then. Looks like it's an all purpose battery management app that has the ability to govern cpu speed also. I'll test drive it and see how it works.
My battery life has improved markedly since installing CM nightly #36 and Pershoot's latest kernel. I've been using my phone pretty heavily over the last 8hours and still have over 50% left. Lots of texts, emails and websurfing etc.

Which kernel should I have if I just want OC?

My phone is rooted and has s-off but I have a few issues. One is almost half the time when I hit the power button the screen doesn't turn on instantly but the soft buttons light up. It usually takes me hitting it 2-3 times swiftly to get my screen on. Another issue is sometimes wifi calling gets screwed up so it doesn't work and it drains my battery as a background task stuck on restarting. I really only want my phone overclocked so just have baconbits kernel. is there a newer version I should put on that fixes these issues?

Baconbits, to my knowledge, is the only OCd kernel available for the stock ROM. Your screen issue might actually be caused by underclocking though, do you have a screen off profile or a minimum set?

Give the overclock widget a try. Its available free on the market. In the advanced setting, set your screen off profile to 245 min and 806 max. Scroll down and hit "save" before you exit settings. That will keep your phone running at stock speeds while the screen is off and should stop the wake issue you're having. When you're using the phone you'll be at the higher speeds.
I already had the widget. Did what you said but it still occurs.

245 is *way* too low, especially if you have things running in the background ... just start raising the lower end up until it stops happening.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Setting it to stay at 800 while the screen is off seemed to fix it. Any ideas about wifi calling bugging out? It usually doesn't happen very often, I think when my phone has been on for a while without a restart.
overclock widget doesn't overclock anything.... it controls the speeds AFTER you've installed an overclock kernel. I highly suggest using flippys turbocharged 1.8ghz kernel. Just because it is capable of 1.8ghz doesn't mean that you need to run it at 1.8ghz. you can just do something like 1.1 or something in between. Give it a look.

Nobody said the OC widget overclocked anything. Did you read the OP's first post? It was suggested so as to enable a screen off profile because the OP is having a wake issue while using baconbits.

set the off screen profile to the lowest speed 200/200mhz and 100% priority and he wont have anymore wake issues, don't know what I was reading hahaha
The screen on issue doesn't happen anymore but I'm not satisfied with my battery life. In the past something was causing my battery to drain insanely fast so I un installed a bunch of unused apps and started checking background tasks but when browsing the internet for 20 minutes on my way home I use 30% of the battery, bluetooth on.

Anyone know if it is possible to run Pershoot's kernel on the stock rom that comes with the device? Any side effects?
I don't know enough to say 100% one way or the other, but I read in a post I can't find right now that only BaconBits is made to work with the stock rom.
FWIW, I tried to flash the 1.8 GHz kernal on my stock G2 this morning, and got stuck in a boot loop.
On AndroidCentral people are saying they have improved battery life with CM7 nightlies. I'd like to try running a ROM finally. Do I need to get rid of my Baconbits kernel before proceeding? I already backed up everything with Titanium.

NO. The first thing you need to do is flash clockworkmod 3.0.0.5, which is totally different than ROM Manager. As of right now the latest clockworkmod available through ROM Manager is 2.5.1.3. If you haven't flashed that yet (2.5.1.3) do that first through ROM Manager. The best way to flash 3.0.0.5 is to find the .img file, place it on your sd card and run the commands from terminal emulator. After that just wipe data/factory reset, wipe davlik cache and flash the latest nightly .zip, reboot, then the latest gapps .zip. Go to the development forum and the first post in the nightly vendor vision thread has all the links you'll need.

Random cpu spikes?

Okay. Set cpu clocked at 833 mhz. Stock kernal, rom, ect. Not when i just let my phone sit at the home screen, it will settle to 245 mhz, 1% cpu usage. Then it will go to 8-9%, and back up to 833 mhz. Im perplexed. Im using temp+cpu pro to monitor this btw.
I like running for saftey!
Are any background processes hoof on during the times it spikes ie syncing or background apps running?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
None. On watchdog everythings showing 0.3 % or less when its doing it. Watchdog refreshes every 3 minutes, but it happens too often to be watchdog
I like running for saftey!
I noticed you had another thread on profiles.....are you not using profiles still? And if so I'm not really sure what would be causing this besides either a bug in your copy of setcpu or your kernel.....I would try maybe flashing a different kernel....give one with bfs a try....your phone may work better with the different scheduler to help a lot when the CPU will run at certain speeds.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I have no profiles set. Im about to go back to stock. I cant figire out wtf is going on.

I mean before removing root I would definitely at least try another kernel first....it couldn't hurt and I feel like it might fix it.

proper way to use smartass?

i just flashed invisibleks .37 kernal with OMFGB (ran into some problems with CM7) and i was wondering the proper way to set up setcpu profiles with smartass (if needed at all)
Sorry. This should be in Q&A.....

I ran OMFGB 1.1.1 for a long time before they screwed up 1.2(soooooo many errors), and really felt the need to have a lockscreen music controler(1.1.1 doesn't). I always ran 128/768, on 1.1.1 it should run perfect(I run chad's kernel though), just unlock slowly. If you want a faster unlock set it 245/768. Either one of those will get you really good battery life(128 being better obviously). If you are running 1.2, I highly recommend you set it atleast at 921(i think) or above as that just doesn't run as smooth. Also note the way smartass works, unless you want to kill battery life everytime you turn the screen on, try to set the max the lowest possible as it will sit as a frequency the phone feels it should run at without losing any speed(most of the time it's 1036 if you've overclocked). So unless you are just texting or calling, it's not bad, but any multitasking or big app using when the screen on, it'll jump way up.
I believe Chad is working on an ingenious kernel that tries to scale intelligently to what it is doing at all times so it'll save battery life not only when the screen is off, but also while the screen is on.
Can i set profiles or no? Like screen off, battery ones, and one temp one?

Oh, well, there is no point for a screen off one if you are using smartass on all your profiles. When it's not doing anything, it automatically scales down to the lowest setting possible(128 for best battery but slow unlock speeds or double clicks sometimes, 245 fixes those problems but using a fraction more battery).
I have a Normal profile(128/768), a Temp profile(245/614), just make sure if you are using GPS you manually scale it up some, my phone always ran like crap when Navigating anything less then 883, but everything, and I mean everything usually was fine at 768 on 1.1.1. If you are running 1.2 probably want to do 883 then 998 for GPS.

Wake problems.

My phone sometimes doesn't wake when I try and turn it back on after a while when the screen goes off.
I am running CM7 7.1.
I am using default oc settings. (ONDEMAND, 300-ish min, 1110-ish max, no undervolting as far as I know)
I tried to press the button combo to get fastboot but it doesn't work either. I have to take the batteries out for the phone to restart and then it works again.
What gives?

368 is the lowest you should go and, even then, you might run into wake issues. Additionally, if you have anything like SetCPU installed, be sure you don't have a screen off profile set with too low a speed.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It seems to be mostly a cpu clocking issue. Raise your minimal clock for screen off profile if you have one and it should work.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I don't think that is the reason.
Back during CM6 6.0 RC1, I had set CPU with 256mhz off screen, and it was perfectly fine back then...

Are you using SetCPU?
If you are (and it's really not needed anymore) make sure your max on the screen off isn't set low as well. You can sometimes get away with a low min but, if you have a 256min/256max, you're basically telling your device to stay at 256 whenever the screen is off and no amount of pushing the power button to wake it will change that.

Not. I uninstalled SetCPU. Using the built in govenor now...
The problem you seem to be having is a bsod or black screen of death.
If you search that term in the forum you will find a few posts about it.
The only thing that i am aware of about the issue is that it is related to the use of your gps.
I have had trouble replicating the issue, it happens very randomly. I sent my phone to bell and they didn't fix it...

In my case it was a battery issue.
To be sure I tried the experience 3 times: OEM battery for a day, ebay one for an other.
At the end I had a black screen ( sleep of death) every time I turn off the screen on the ebay battery (galilio).
The voltage was alright, it was something else.
running virtuous unity 2.37
I've had problems with the screen-on and screen-off animations causing a black-screen-of-death.
