[Q] Push/Syncing Over Wifi Not Working When Screen is Off - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A few weeks ago I noticed that when connected to wifi I wasn't receiving consistent notifications for emails from my Gmail account or my exchange account, but still able to get on the web, check Facebook, and basically do anything else that required a data connection. At the time I was running Incredibly Re-Engineered 2.3. If I received an email while using the phone, I sometimes received a notification, but if the screen was off and the phone was on my desk, then I wouldn't receive a notification. However, the moment I pickup the phone and unlock the screen, I receive an email notification.
I've been experiencing this problem while using multiple ROMs - Redemption 2.4, Incredibly Re-Engineered 2.3 and 2.4, and Incredibly Re-Engineered Z 1.2B (which I'm running right now) - so I don't think the issue is being caused by the ROM. I've made sure that the Wifi sleep policy is set to "never." In Accounts & Sync, "background data" and "auto sync" are both checked, as are all the sync options for my individual accounts. That being said, everything works fine on 3G, regardless of the ROM.
I really don't know what else I can do to fix this problem, and I'm desperate to fix it. Any suggestions?

Bump - 'cause I'm desperate.

Happens to me as well, different ROMs, but same thing.
I find it better, not solved, but better as I flash different kernels with ROMs.
Never happened on stock rooted setup, maybe that's a clue for me...

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who's had this problem. Do you recall what kernel you've had the best luck with??

AOSP FroYo ROM, InvisibleK #18
The AOSP & FroYo kernels and ROMs aren't interchangeable, same with gingerbread, although I believe there's a couple AOSP kernels that work on GB and FroYo.

[Q] Tethering 3G disappear / reappear

Saw this on the "wireless tether" homepage, so i just copied and pasted it as it explains my problem as good is i could. I have tried different kernals, ive tried wiping.. unrooting rerooting etc... and it happens on all tether apps including the stock one. It starts happening after it gets over 35 degrees Celsius. :/
Currently using MIUI rom, however does it on all of them including stock unrooted one.
Anyone know how to fix? Its quiet annoying! :/
Which device (manufacturer, type)?
HTC Incredible
Which firmware is installed?
2.2
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.turn on
2.connects
3.works for about 5 minutes
What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Works really good for the first 5-10 minutes then stops and 3G symbol will disappear and reappear along with 3G service
I remember seeing the same issue, but I don't recall seeing it since flashing skyraider vanilla.
The last ROM I used was virtuous.
I don't use tether very often, but I can pay attention to the 3g and temps when I do.
Do you see interruption in your connection on the connected device(s)?

It usually only takes 20-30 mb download to heat it up to the point it starting flickering on and off. But no, it doesn't interrupt if its wired tether, only wireless...
veeeerry annoying as I like to have it for college.
what verison of Wireless Tether are you using. I know that I had the same problem for two reasons, 1. there are at least two verisons that I know of that have a problem. I had the same trouble. 2. You might have a the 3G Drop problem.
I've had this happen in MIUI 0.11.26 as well as CM 6.0.2 on my AMOLED Inc.
For me its not a temp problem but rather a heavy data traffic problem. It only seems to do it when I'm intensely viewing multiple webpages with flash or videos.
Only fix for me is reboot.

[Q] Ginger Villain 2.4 and skype

I wonder if anyone has experienced login problems with Skype app with Ginger Villain 2.4 (the very latest)? Seems as if every other app installed has no problems, just can't login with Skype. Tried both with wifi and on 3G. Neither will allow login.
Thanks for any tips you may have.
The latest Gingervillain here at XDA is at v2.3. I was using that ROM last week and had no problem with Skype.
GV 2.4 is out - it's posted in the GV thread now. It's been out for a couple days though. Skype worked for me when I was using GV 2.3 as well - just can't get past the log-in credentials now. Continually says wrong password. Not a big deal, as I don't use it that much on the phone - just wondering if others had the same issue, and maybe a solution.

Google Talk issue - after a few minutes Contacts are all offline when not

I posted this in NilsP's Business GingerSense thread, but don't think it's a ROM issue, more of a Google Talk issue. Running the 2.0 version of that ROM.
The issue is where Google Talk shows all your contacts as Offline after a period of say five to ten minutes, maybe shorter than that. I'll be messaging someone, and after a few minutes when they haven't responded, I'll wake my phone and open GT. All the contacts are Offline. A simple sign out/sign in fixes that, and the usual contacts show Online or Away.I've noticed this all week, so I'm thinking it's a GT issue, but I've never had it happen before.
Don't want to have to sign out/in every time I want to use it. Cleared GT cache, fix permissions, multiple wipes of data/system/cache/boot/dalvik/user data before each ROM install, and haven't had this before now.
Thoughts?
EDIT: After playing, it happens when switching from 3G to WiFi and vice versa, so maybe it is a ROM thing...?
i'm having the same issue. noticed after my gingerbread OTA update from verizon.
Droid 2.
It seems to happen a few minutes after logging on.
I also have that issue with Gtalk. After some time all contacts appear to be offline, but only when I'm on data connection and not on wifi.
There is still no solution for this?
Cheers!

Me too. Anyone was able to do something?
Well I've since moved on, and haven't noticed it on other ROMs. Right now I just tested toggling Wifi on and off, and the contacts would appear offline, then come online once 3g or wifi connected.
I'm thinking in my case, it was that version of the ROM I was running at the time.

Just a thought, check any task killers / managers and make sure talk is unchecked. I had the same problem a long time ago and ATK was the culprit. Haven't had the issue since and I have used almost every Rom possible at one point or another

True. Right after I rooted over a year ago, I had an issue with the alarm clock not going off intermittantly, and coincidentally I was using ATK at the time. After reading that ATK could be the issue, uninstalling it fixed the issue. Since then, I don't actively kill tasks, but I do have System Panel installed just in case.
I'm running Stock+ v2.6, and since moving on from v2.0 of NilsP's ROM where I had the initial issue, I haven't noticed/had the problem.

Hi,
Me and the other user are I9000 users. No task killers. We're trying to figure out if its a stock / custom ROM issue (since we're both using the same ROM), or some app forcing GTalk to sign out, or even a network problem (we both use the same mobile operator).
Thank you both for your input.
If you're on a stock ROM (you're both rooted right?), back up your ROM and flash another just to see if it happens in something different.

Yes, we are.
The thing is that it seems to me that it happened only after XXVJR (meaning it happened to me in XXJVS and XXJVT, and now we're already at XWJVU, all these being Samsungs "leaks"), and I have a friend with XXJVS that works just fine.
I even tried flashing a stock ROM, to see if it happens again. Testing that one now.
Thanks for your advice.
Same problem here.
Although I have not tried it with stock non rooted phone...
I'm having the same problem on a stock rooted Motorola Photon. Very annoying to have to sign out and back in to see who's online. Hopefully someone comes to the rescue with a solution.
Hi,
The only thing I could find is that the problem is, indeed, NOT in the custom ROM's. It's google's problem.
The only way I could get by was with an alternative IM. And, for me, the better is Trillian (taking battery, performance, etc. in consideration.)
I updated my software which included an updated gtalk with video..so far so good.

Mine got better with one of those. But it ended up all the same.

I am having this issue too. I have had it since the beginning, when I had the preinstalled stock rom, I had it with all the other stock roms I flashed, I had it with all the versions of Talk I tried (those which supported video calls), I had it with all the other customs roms I tried (Simplicity, CyanogenMod, MIUI). I never used any task killer. For these reasons I am strongly convinced this is a Google Talk related bug.
Some more details about the problem:
after a few minutes after having logged in, contacts are shown offline on Android while they appear online on the desktop client;
despite their offline status I still receive messages from them and as soon as I answer only that contact appears online while the others keep being shown offline;
signing out and back in fixes the problem temporarily, but it happens again after a few minutes.
What surprises me is how come very few people seem noticing it or being annoyed by it? How come a huge bug like this has been out for so long and Google hasn't fixed it yet? All the posts I have seen reporting this problem on Google Talk Help Forum have been ignored.
Exact same problem with my I9100, Gtalk with video. Very annoying.
I have the SGS i777 (Samsung Galaxy S2 on AT&T), and just recently (since late February) started experiencing the same issue. When on WiFi, it doesn't appear to be an issue, only when not on WiFi, particularly if I have just recently turned off WiFi.
Other "friends" show me as "Away", so I am connected.
This is bone stock 2.3.6 Samsung official ROM (never rooted UCKK6).
I tried crawling a bit through the logs (aLogCat output), filtering for "[Tt]alk", but I can't make enough heads or tails about where the failure might be (not being an actual developer), other than lots of messages get created. I'll see if I can't figure something more useful out about it.
A hard reset with no apps installed has the same problem. Though I've noticed that the problem appears to get "worse" as the phone "ages" - namely, hard reset fixes the problem, but it slowly (over days) gets worse and worse.
Update: I have not noticed this issue at all since getting the official Samsung/AT&T ICS build (IML74K.CLE5).
Google Talk failing for toooo loooong
Hi there,
I'm a cyanogen 7.1 (stable) android user, and I just want to join myself to every other person who's affected by this issue.
I'll leave here some links to other places discussion exactly the same issue:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?can=2&start=0&num=100&q=gtalk%20offline&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=24242
You may check this thread: groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!topic/chat/6m0YqHoiIDg
Until now, I wasn't also able to find any clue to what the cause may be.
Starting to suspect that's something on Google's side, not android/rom itself.
Maybe something to do with our google accounts' settings?
Are there any news about this issue? I'm having the same problem.

CM7.1 mms problems

Hi guys.
Forgive me, this question has been asked before, I've tried searching for days but can't find a solution. Here's the breakdown:
I can't get mms to send at all anymore. Details are:
Pvt3
0.93.0001
S-on
Latest radio
CM7.1 stable version
It used to send mms fine. Then it gradually declined. First the signal bars would turn white during a send attempt. Then signal would disconnect and reconnect before completing the process. At this stage it was still sending mms. Now that doesn't happen at all, and maybe one in thirty send attempts will work. No other data connections have been affected. Web is fine. Maps is fine. The only component of my data that won't work is sending mms (it still receives mms ok). Apps like viber and whatsapp have no problem sending image/audio/video but stock message app and gosms don't work. Its driving me insane, I've looked everywhere but can't find a fix.
Does anybody know of a way to fox this please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love cyanogenmod, this is the only thing about my handset that doesn't work. Its driving me insane guys!!

Which ROM are you using and are your APN settings adjusted according to your carrier? CyanogenMOD ROMs have a HUGE APN list so you can flash a CyanogenMOD rom if you're unsure. Check with your carrier first.
Yeah as it says above I'm using CyanogenMod 7.1 stable, and I've triple checked my APNs. It was working ok, haven't changed anything, and all of a sudden it has stopped working.

Happened to me once - a reboot cured it.
Rebooting doesn't seem to work for me. The strangest part is that it's not consistent. Every blue moon it'll send an mms or two, but then it'll stop working. I love CyanogenMod, it's perfect for me except for this one glitch I can't conquer :/

Trying to investigate Mail app causing Wifi drop - how does one enable logging?

I am using the the Tazz ICS rom, which thus far works flawlessly, except one thing.
I am using the default out of the box Mail app hooked up to my work Exchange mail (actually MS Office 365). Oddly, interacting in the Mail app causes the Wifi connection to drop consistently. By interaction, I'm referring to refreshing mail, opening messages, and general browsing around the app. This is THE ONLY app that seems to cause Wifi drops. Gmail is fine, among several others.
I'm motivated enough to look at any sort of logging to help fix this, but I don't know how to enable this. Anyone?
Or has anyone seen behavior like this? I've google'd and found a lot of wifi drop related threads but lots of folks point to the router. I've NEVER had wifi issues using stock, or CM7 so I know it's not that.
I have the same problem on my HTC Desire S which I updated to ICS recently. Whenever I open my out-of-the-box HTC mail app, the wifi signal is dropped, then reconnects. It only happens in this app.

Yeah, I never found a fix so I reverted back to Stock. Couldn't use the device with this issue, and never figured out what ways I might be able to fix. With less than 10 posts, I couldn't reply to the Tazz thread either. Oh well!
