Hey I have a Omnia 7, A Desire HD and a IPAD 1. The Ipad and the Desire HD get very good location locks inside using i assume a mix of cell towers and my Wifi, however my windows phone shows me about 20 miles away.
This is using the same Vodafone sim in each phone too and the same Wifi network. Makes me wonder how WP7 is using A-GPS compared to the others on my phone, as been 20 miles out is very very bad, even with just cell towers inside its about 2 3 miles out (when i turn off wifi, compared to very accurate locks on the ipad and desire HD)
The GPS on the omnia is perfect outside of course but it's annoying to not having it work inside, does anyone have any clue as to why only the WP7 device can't seem to get good location data inside?
Loving WP7 overall though!
strange, here in Sweden its spot on. More accurate then any of the competitors, exept on iPhone, that were exact as good.

When my HD7 was new I had the same issue that my location shown inside was kilometers away apparently using only GSM cell information.
It changed after I once was standing at a window where the phone got a GPS position in addition to WLAN connection.
Since then my position is shown correctly using WLAN only. So obviously Microsoft Location Service had to learn the position of my WLAN first. I think that's the reason that Google and Microsoft are scanning for WLANs when taking their Street View pictures.
Tried the GPS fix thing doesn't want to hold the position as soon as I go back inside, very annoying, locks in standing outside, walk inside i get teleported 18. miles north >< . It's not the end of the world as it locks very quickly as soon as i get outside so if i needed directions can do them in the car before i drive off.
I am assuming that WP7 has the wrong location data for this Wifi no idea how it even decides location based off my router I guess IP data. When i did a IP lookup for my router i get even more out of range results its showing me 40 odd miles away so at least WP7 puts me somewhere in the middle

Ok so I got the Desire
My connection keeps switching from 3G to HSDPA every couple of seconds this is causing all sorts of issue for me.. Any body else have this issue? I might take the handset back for the 4th time
Happens to me as well mate, its due to having a low 3g/hsdpa signal... My one where i live constantly changes between 3g/hsdpa and G. But when i go into central london, it stays H its due to the signal quality in the area, not with your phone mate
JD
I second that, it switches all the time in my home and never downloads on 3G. I thought this was an issue with the phone, then at a party I couldn't get H but got 3G and it downloaded data fine.
I'm hoping that they increase the signal strength and coverage over the years, but i'm pretty satisfied thus far.
At least you see a 3G and a HSPDA connection... I have never seen past GPRS on mine. Fastest it's been is 25kbps dl and ul with 577ms ping so I can only ever use WiFi. So much for navigation.

i have a fairly weak area too and left my phone on auto thinking this was best. however, having selected 3g only, i have noted a much improved data connection and none of this messing about going from one to another! maybe worth a try for your area.
The two main places i use the connection are at home and work and in both my connection speed varies according to where i am .If i sit on the right hand couch in my living room then i just about get 3g but if i move 10 ft across the room i get full HSPDA(the same situation occured with my iphone)and i have yet to find out the reason.
If you want to find out how you are serviced then visit w w w. sitefinder . ofcom . org . uk/ just remove the gaps
hi
My understanding is that when there is minimal date transfer (basically just connected to network) it shows 3G but when any data transfer takes place e.g., opening webpage or market etc etc, the connection changes to HSDPA to download at faster rate
But i may be wrong
I have the same prob, and already opened topic about it, and i see few others opend some more..
Basicly having my old HTC HD aside with Desire, HD connects to 3g, and Desire is jumping around from 3G and a HSPDA and it doesnt wana connect to 3g, same happnes with a HTC Legend phone who 2 of my friends have.
HTC Desire is a very fine phone and I am really happy with it after upgrading from my beloved WinMo 6.5 based HTC Touch Diamond, which was also quite a revelation 2 years ago.
However I am a bit concerned about the WiFi reception sensitivity- when I have my Desire next to an iPhone tuned to the same AP, iPhone indicates much stronger signal than Desire. Also iPhone appears to be picking more WiFi networks in urban areas than Desire sitting right next to it. The signal strength measured by the Desire is way below that of iPhone or my laptop- although the latter two tend to agree.
This was enough to convince me to get a replacement Desire today but the WiFi sensitivity has not improved noticably. I wonder what is your experience?
For example I am now in a place where an Open WAP (no security) shows -30dBm on my laptop while Desire's WiFi Analyzer gives -55dBm, which is 25 dBm less or approximately 20x weaker signal as far as I can remember from my engineering past.
With weak AP signals the difference appears to be increasing- my laptop picks a network at -55dBm while Desire already looses this network as it comes and goes at -95dBm.
I would imagine that with such poor WiFi radio signal path the Desire will unncecessarily boost the transitting power thus contributing to faster battery drain?
I am honestly puzzled here.
Dont compare your Desire with your laptop. It will never be the same, nor win.
Laptop component will be far superior.
Use SpeedTest app and test the connection speed.
I tested my Desire at my house, on the spot are which it only has -80 db and I could manage 2Mbps connection. Still fast enough for web browsing, market browsing, etc.
I enable cellular data, and there is like a 5% chance it will ever work. The rest 95% times I have to restart my phone for it to work. Sometimes its working fine and then all of a sudden it stop, and again I have to restart my phone.
P.S my data connection is perfectly fine. No problems there.
Not seeing this on my phone and the DVP is notorious for some of its issues. So, maybe it's not WP7, just your phone.
Happens to me quite a bit. It just refuses to load over 3G. H and G work although the later is far too slow
I don't have any connection issues either. It's most definitely your phone. Maybe you could try and install another radio?
What is your carrier?
I have the same problem on my Omnia 7. It works for a week, and then it doesn't for a couple of hours. So frustrating! It's not branded, and I've talked to my carrier, but they cannot find any problems at their end.

Reception is poor on the HD7 as well, compared to the Vibrant. Factorably poor to the point that anyone who is buying the phone primarily for a phone would pass up the HD7 for the Vibrant due to Reception/Call Quality/Speakerphone quality disparity between the two.
I think Microsoft needs to update the driver, to strengthen the radio (probably set rather weak to conserve battery).
Connection is awesome on my Mozart, both for voice and data. I get stable HSDPA with good speeds at home where the iPhone (bad benchmark, but still) only got Edge, and HD2 constantly switches from 3G to GSM. I talk easily in my office elevator where even most dumbphones fail.
Guess it depends on many factors including the combination of device and operator. Generally, coverage here is better than in most places in the US, judging by my personal (although limited) experience and what I'm reading in tech blogs.
Wifi range has been terrible on this phone. I tried messing with my router settings for a while and thought maybe some phones are better than others but i lose my wifi calling too easily so I installed a wifi analyzer app and compared to my moms galaxy S 4g and my laptop. My network and the half dozen networks around me show the the same relative strengths but minus 20 db on the defy. Near or far g or n open or secured its pretty consistent -20 in comparison for each network i can see. I can get full bars of the wifi icon on defy but only with line of sight to the router.
Is this a known defect? If i return this phone is there a good chance that i'll get another one with bad wifi? I don't think there's too many defys left in the store.
Im running stock rom still so i don't think its a software problem.
It seems like the wifi range on my Nexus just doesn't hold up. Here's (attached) a shot I just took of my Galaxy Nexus and another of my iPhone4 in the exact same spot at the exact-ish same time.
The router is on the other side of the house, and while the iPhone4 and my Macbook (which i'm typing this on right now in the same spot, connected) pretty consistently stay at one or two bars at the very least, the Galaxy Nexus has a noticeable/distinct lack of ability to keep a consistent signal, and struggles to do so.
Every Samsung phone I've ever owned has this issue.
My work iPhone 4 works on the 3rd floor of my house (router in basement) with full bars whereas the Samsungs (GNEX included) barely connect.
Very frustrating as I like to use wifi to save carrier data. Oh well. At least I have unlimited data, so I stream away via 3g.
mine doesnt do as well as my motorolas and nokias but it still holds it own. The bars are not as indicative for me because even when showing no bars i have had a reliable connection.

Actually I find it just cuts out continuously. I turned off "avoid poor connections" but that didn't make a noticable difference. It connects and reconnects all the time.
You can watch when i download a game it will hang for a few minutes then start the transfer or continue it again.

Aggravating. Anyone know if the SGSII is the same way?
Do any of you guys know if the wifi strength is an improvement over the nexus s?

It's a downgrade from GSII as far as I know.

I am following this thread with great interest.
I have Motorola Razr and for me the WiFi reception is appalling.
It can only just see my home network.
To compare my three year old HTC Hero is showing seven!
I have a plan that allows my to connect to BT Openzone hotspots around the UK (something that is very important to me)
I went into my nearest town yesterday and it could not find a single WiFi signal!
I want to like my Razr, but I am finding it difficult and I was thinking that the Gnex would be the logical way to go but it seems that you guys are experiencing similar problems.
ive tested both phones as well.
the 4s definitely destroys both the wifi / cell reception on the galaxy nexus.
in my house my iphone is usually around -80 to -89 dbm but the galaxy nexus is -95 to -107. Kind of pathetic if you ask me but I like the phone way to much to go back to the iphone.
Definitely still having issues with this, if anyone is curious. At my girlfriend's house tonight, and despite the router being the next room over, the phone still can't keep a solid signal. It is rather pathetic, honestly. For Google/Samsung's sake, I hope this bug can be fixed via software.
my SGSII has terrible wifi performance also. My captivate had bad wifi performance also, so ill be used to it when I get the Nexus lol. Good thing the router is right next to me

Jup it's pretty horrible the signal drops from 20mbps to 6mpbs if I put the nexus on a table just 6 meters away. S2 same prob although it doesn't seem to be as bad as the nexus.
I'm seeing the same thing on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
In the same room iPhone 4 and HTC Thunderbolt gets 3 or 4 bars, the nexus gets 1. Go into the next room, or god-forbid go into the basement and there's no wifi connection on the Galaxy Nexus but 3 or 4 bars still on the other phones.
There is certainly an issue.
I called VZW support and got the usual run around : reboot the phone, "we're sending new settings to your phone" etc. Finally he told me that it's probably a problem with the SIM card and they'd send me a new one. I said "no thanks, I want to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about."
After being transferred through to Samsung support I didn't get much further but the lady there at least knew what she was talking about.
They mentioned an upcoming software update, which I've been reading about, but I'm not sure that this is really the issue, since it's not just that it does't show enough bars, it loses the connection.
Tried a different radio?
At the moment there are many different smallband versions. And they all give a different signal. The smallband xxkk6 seems to be the best.
Try upgrading you smallband with the radio.img that can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374077 This is only for the gsm version.
My HTC Thunderbolt is the same way.
It has at least 25% stronger 4G and Wifi signal at all times.
Seems like Samsung uses weaker antennas to save on power, cost, and/or weight??
It's better than my Captivate was. Can't go by bars anyway.
I returned my Galaxy Nexus for a new one. Probably got a defect one from factory.
Lost connection to my wifi-network when i went around 2-3 meters from my router.
Tried switching channels, 2,4Ghz/5Ghz frequencies and flashing different radios. No go
My GN suffers from the "Avoided, poor network signal"
As many other have said its rather annoying when your trying to conserve your 3G Bandwidth Maybe Samsung will fix this in the coming weeks (Maybe not)
I found out that the WiFI signal icon on the GNex is misleading; on my Optimus 2X it was full and Wifi Analyzer showed -60 dBm. On the GNex it was half yet Wifi Analyzer showed -50 dBm, sometimes -60. The link speed is 65Mbps on GNex, 72Mbps on O2X. Both show Excellent signal strength in network details.
