[Q] Flashing a ROM, it's been a while...

Hi, I have posted this before but it got deleted because I very stupidly posted it in the wrong place.
My question has been answered before due to searching but no one else happens to be in my EXACT situation and I don't want to mess up my phone.
Basically my Desire HD is rooted etc and I want to flash the Android Revolution ROM, but I havent flashed any ROM's since my OLD G1 and now everyone talks about S-OFF etc and I don't understand these, on my G1 it was simply rooting and flashing a Recovery and then flashing a ROM, so basically what do I need to flash this ROM
My situation:
I am running the stock ROM (permroot on 1.32.405.6)
I have stock radio
I have Clockwork mod 3.0.0.6
and Buzz Sense 1.3 + OC (OC'd 1.6Ghz) kernel.
(+Ever since I downgraded from 1.72 I have lost wi-fi, it connected to my wi-fi but I get no internet access through it, its definitely a problem with the phone and nothing else because I have tested my router etc, all my other devices have connectivity through my router)

We all were in your exact situation. The Desire HD employs an extra level of security to prevent users messing with their handsets, S-ON.
You need to turn this off, Ideally ENG (Engineering) S-OFF, before you can make persistent changes to your system.
Have a read through the very helpful guides in the Dev section. They also contain the tools you need. Turning S-OFF should be a one time process only, i.e once you've done it there is no need to repeat it to flash another ROM.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have SHIP S-OFF and I'm unable to get ENG S-OFF because when I used the Easy S-OFF tool it can only give me SHIP S-OFF for some reason, I cant do anything now since its incompatible with my kernel as well. Can I flash a ROM with just SHIP S-OFF? I don't want to flash any radios because I bricked my G1 about 4 million times when flashing radios.

It you run a 1.32 WWE RUU and revert back to stock you can then reapply ENG S-OFF. A bit of a ball ache I know.
Most ROMs will work just fine with SHIP S-OFF but ENG is usually preferred.
To flash a radio you need Radio S-OFF another beast entirely. However there is a very good too to do it with. No bricks so far and your DHD will then have super CID and be SIM unlocked.

Just tick the "I have radio s-off" box and it becomes compatible with everything.

follow my guide in the sig and skip to eng s-off and radio s-off part, or skip to whatever comes next if you've already done them

Tried that, I get a "Connection Error", I have made sure its fully connected as "Disk Drive" and I allow the Super User request when I do it, but it still doesn't work, plus the radio tool just says "Incompatible kernel" - or something like that.
I mainly want to know, can I flash Android Revolution in my current situation, can I flash with just SHIP S-OFF and my current kernel, or do I have to go back to stock kernel, flash the ROM and then flash my kernel back?
and why should I have ENG S-OFF, if it makes a lot of difference I will give it ago, but I mainly want to just flash this ROM to see if it fixes my wifi issue and my camera doesn't drop so many frames! (known issue in 1.32, fixed in 1.7X)

Disk Drive. Yeah, read the guide again more carefully, mate... And change the tool, why are you using easy radio tool!? It won't give you ENG S-OFF. My ENG S-OFF tool will give you that. And it most definitely will not say incompatible kernel if you just tick the box I talked about.
You can flash ARHD now. Do not mess around with it's kernel after flashing, because it comes with the best kernel out there. The kernel has been made to fit ARHD's needs.

I get the same as every other time, downloads the Easy S-OFF tool, "Pushing stuff to SD" Phone says "Unknown has been granted su access" and then the tool says "Error: Connection Problem!" - I get this every time, I have tried re-downloading this software every time, removing the "Unknown" in super user and then re-allowing it when it asks, I still get the same error...
Does it matter that I'm using Windows 7 64-bit?
EDIT: I think I've done it now, I downloaded the latest 2.3 SDK (I had 2.2) which updated my ADB drives, I didn't get the error this time, will boot into H-BOOT and check now.

Are you still using that disk drive mode? Because you should not.

I have thanked everyones post, I can confirm my H-BOOT Now says PVT ENG S-OFF, one last thing, I'm all good to flash now? I can just put the ROM (sense version) on my SD card and flash it in CWM, with my current kernel, even though it will over write it with the one included for Android Revolution, I dont have to go back to stock kernel or anything first right?

Have you flashed ClockworkMod Recovery yet? If not download ROM Manager from the Market and flash it from there.
Once that is complete, download ROM, put on SD Card, Recovery, Wipe, Flash, Enjoy.

[Q] Problem with HTC Android Revolution 6.2.0

Hello,
as I am not permitted to post into the right forum, I post my problem here. I installed the HTC Android Revolution 6.2.0 today.
I made an SuperWipe, reinstalled my backup but now in my LockScreen there are no icons. I wanted to have the clock on my lockscreen but no matter what I choose it does not change a thing.
Can somebody help me with that?

You flashed ARHD, then SuperWiped, then restored your backup?
Try wiping again, then flashing ARHD. After that I wouldn't restore a backup, that seems to be the cause.

another new member here. So yesterday I rooted my HTC Desire HD for the first time. I used Advance Ace Hack Kit. Then I wiped with SuperWipe and flashed Android Revolution HD 6.2.0 . It works fine, but I failed on this step -
"With 6.2.x ROMs I strongly recommend flashing 12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M radio"
When I try to flash the radio using the recommended method, it says - "writing radio failed" . How to solve this and should I actually flash the radio or its fine now?

Unless you want them for future use you can get rid of them. Nothing that is system critical runs from your sd card. The Rom installs on the internal memory on your phone.

I actually just rooted my HTC Desire HD for the first time last night, too. I used the Android Ace Hack Kit, and now I loaded on ARHD. So far so good. But I am wondering why the extra step is required to update the radio? I see it's "strongly recommended", but is that for people who already are using some other radio?
I kind of don't want to follow the steps because you have to install something called Visionary, but that site makes it seem like an outdated program. Do I need to do this radio?

after flashing the new ROM Android revolution HD 6.2.0 , I am not able to read the capacity of my SD I re-flashed the ROM and I did super wipe too , but the only thing I can see is "PB" front of my apps ;( I also tried defragmentation process but no result any suggestions?

After you have rooted your DHD with android ace hack kit, you don't need to use Visionary anymore, coz it's rooted. U must Radio S-off before able to flash new Radio. To do this, please use one click radio-S off, which u could find it in the forum. BTW, you only root your phone using hack kit, and have ONLY Eng S-off, NOT radio S-off. After you have done this, you just need to flash new radio in recovery mode. That's it, all done! Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. I went ahead and updated the radio. I even then tried to update the battery icon at the top to show the percentage, but that sent my device into a boot loop. I was able to restore, so I'm okay. I guess I'll wait and see how the phone works this week.

Stock/custom Rom+SD Contents!

I am going to use the excuse of being female Haha no excuse for anything i know
After having a "Desire" i was able to root that just so i could use Aps2SD to move my apps. yada yada lol I never had the nerve to attempt to install Custom Rom.
Since that went wrong a couple weeks back i purchased a tada "HTC DHD"
I have been reading my eyes sore for the past week on how too:
1.root the DHD=success Ace Hack Brilliant
2.The Plunge..install Custom Rom.. RCMix3D"LOVE IT" using RomManager.
3. Radios-kernals etc
Now my questiones
Q.1
Having read so much about roms. Am i to believe in the later versions of the Roms.aka RCMix3D v4.0..
Do these already include the suitable radio-kernal etc?
If the latter versions do,does this applie to earlier version?
Q.2
Before i installed RCMix3D i did a rom backup of my stock rom using RomManager.
If for any stupid known reason i needed to revert back to stock. Is it a simple case of restoring the back up? Would this do the radio etc?
Also when it comes up on the backup saying the "date-time"etc can i rename the back up to easely reconise it?

As the DHD didnt come with a SDcard i used a 2Gb i had laying about spare.Titchy size i know..
As i have now got a Kingston 32Gb "Size Does Matter "
Is it possible to transfer all the files off the 2Gb card onto my laptop then onto the 32Gb, Then inserting the 32Gb into the DHD with out any problems arrising due to a differant SdCard?
This information maybe on the forum but work is killer so im sorry for appearing lazy

1) all roms come with the kernal. Radios are independent and would be up to you if you wanted to flash it
2) yes on both. You can name it whatever your heart desires. And restoring is as easy as hitting restore in cwr

Hi - on 2), ROM Manager has an option to rename the backups - use that, don't rename it using a File Explorer app.
I'm not 100% sure if it's still the case, but in the past, on older versions of ROM Manager and CWM, if I renamed the backup inside ROM Manager it was fine. If I renamed it manually then it wouldn't restore correctly. Probably something to do with the checksums.
Also, the backup doesn't include the radio. So if you change the radio, and want to revert, you'll need to flash the previous radio back separately.

How can I check the radio I am on? On fast boot?
I havnt flashed a different one yet so hope I can make a note of mine.

In Android it's in Settings/About Phone/Software Inforrmation - then the exact screen depends on your ROM version. Look for "Baseband".
In the bootloader/fastboot, it's the 4th line down. Mine says
"Radio-26.14.04.28_M"

Got mine from fastboot.

Most ROMs include everything but the radio, so everything else is covered.
The only other thing that might be worth checking is the hboot version, on the same screen that you got the radio version from. I can't think of many times when you'd need it, but if you ever apply Eng S-Off, which replaces the hboot, you might want to know what version the phone originally came with. It's unlikely but can't hurt.
Incidentally, the best way to revert to stock (for example if you have to send the phone back for repairs), is to flash an RUU, and that includes everything - ROM, radio, hboot, the lot.
So I'd say you're fine.

Sorry to ask, but are you sure your phone has Eng S-Off? There are two types of S-Off, Radio S-Off and Eng S-Off. Eng S-Off completely replaces the standard hboot with a special engineering hboot, that removes a lot of security. One of the things it does is allow you to use fastboot commands to flash things like rRadios and splash screens.
If you have Eng S-Off, on the bootloader screen the first line will say
"ACE PVT ENG S-OFF"
and the hboot version is
HBOOT-0.85.2007
If you have this version, you have the engineering hboot (or bootloader) and should be able to flash a splash screen.
If it says "ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF" then you only have Radio S-Off, which allows you to flash custom ROMs, but not to flash anything that uses the fastboot.exe to flash, such as radios and splashes.
If you don't have Eng S-Off yet, check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
(You don't need to run Visionary before the tool if you already have a custom ROM with root.)
But be careful if you have an Inspire 4G (as opposed to a Desire HD), as the Eng S-Off method causes issues with some newer Inspires.

BTW the Inspire 4G is a variant of the DHD made by HTC for the AT&T network, and I'm sure you'd know if you had an Inspire rather than a DHD. They're almost the same phone, but there are just a few minor hardware differences. Many ROMs are made to work on both models, so a lot of the Inspire users frequent the DHD forums as well as the Inspire ones, and I always like to just double check in cases where the technical advice might vary.

Dum question but what differences between the two are there?

In most important ways they're identical. The biggest difference is that the Inspire 4G has an AT&T logo on the back.
The Inspire also has more internal memory, but it can only access the same amount of RAM as the DHD. I think there is also a small difference in the audio hardware, which is automatically detected by most custom ROMs during initial flashing, so that the correct sound files can be installed.
Plus the Inspire has (I think) a different transmitter, due to the differences between the worldwide 3G networks and the AT&T one in the USA:

HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Just adding my. 2 cents.
Both the inspire and dhd are the same outside of the 3g frequencies and inspire having a dual Mic plus. Everything else is eseentially the same with sutle difference like the audio files and touchscreen(atmel vs synaptics)
The internal memory looks to be more on the inspire but its not its just how att markets it. The phone has 4gb rom, BUT only 1.5 is user accessible just like the dhd. So technically its not lying just spinning the truth.

Hi.
Just a quick question. After flashing ARHD and RcMIX and cyanogen rom im stuck with the kernal from RcMix now im on cyanogen it is not running to smooth.
How do I go about including the kernal for each rom?
As I thought the roms included them.
I do complete wipe but still doesn't remove.

Roms do include the kernal or they wouldn't boot. If the old kernal stayed your phone wouldn't of booted up on cm. Maybe it was a bad flash? When you wipe did you do a full? Data/system/cache/dalvik?
Also why do you feel it didn't remove it? In about phone what's it say for kernal?

I did actually think they contained them. I did a cache-dalvik wipe also using ARHD super wipe. In phone info says Rcmix kernal etc.
Maybe it has not updated the info.
I actually think it is the radio affecting the wifi.
As I have not changed this from the original radio as im scared of bricking the DHD

Hmm that's interesting. I would say rewipe and flash again. Also for cm I personally recommend lordclockans kernal.
To flashing radios its not as scary as it seems but caution should be taken. If you do decide to flash a new radio just make sure to check the md5sum for file inegrity

[Q] Complete noob humbly asking for help

I've been around the Defy forum for quite a while now; however, my Desire is back from the dead and now my beloved
Motorola Defy is retired, which means that I'll be getting to know this forum instead!
Right now I have absolutely nothing. Just a TELUS Desire GSM on 2.2 stock froyo. Can someone point me in the right
direction for rooting and S-OFF? Do I need to unlock my bootloader as well for most ROMs?

Welcome to the Desire forums.
You should start by ignoring anything that has to do with the Defy. You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Now, let's start with s-off.
Follow this tutorial Long link, and ignore step 2.
After you're s-off, you should install 4ext recovery. It's the best recovery for the Desire.
In this guide, you will install 4ext, and create an ext partition on your sd-card. The partition is allocated for more internal memory (more apps).

Read every guide carefully. You will learn a lot.
After you did those things, you can install a custom ROM. I don't recommend you use the one you mentioned as a daily one. It's still a work in progress, and has a lot of bugs.
There are many hboots. When you change hboot, you change the way the internal memory is partitioned.
For example, the cm7r2 hboot has a smaller system allocated space than the stock hboot.
You usually change hboots to get more app space.

You will root it when you either install a custom rom, or install the supersu zip.

So I read up on some guides that told me to use unrevoked, so I have this reflash_package.exe ready to go. I've uninstalled HTC sync because unrevoked tells me to.
Just one question: I can only use CWM recovery if using unrevoked? That's the default, and only recovery available with it. Can I just download the 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk later and change it to 4ext recovery?
If I end up somehow with a ROM that does not boot, how do I fix it? Flash an original RUU?

Why didn't you just listen to me? You don't need unrevoked.
Did you backup before flashing a rom? If you did, then restore it..
Flash another rom, or flash the 2.3 ruu.

Why didn't you just listen to me? You don't need unrevoked.
Did you backup before flashing a rom? If you did, then restore it..
Flash another rom, or flash the 2.3 ruu.

I did it! Thank you so much for helping me, despite all my noobiness in this forum.
I'm running Cooldroid Revolution 9.0 now. Again, thanks so much. About 7 hours later after I started reading up
and working with my Desire, I've learned a lot of things about S-OFF and HBOOT and EXT4.
I did a nandroid backup of my original 2.2 ROM before I formatted my SD card and it's backed up on my new
fat32 and my desktop as well. I guess I'm safe for now.
Oh and one more thing, are RUUs like a last-ditch attempt to save your phone? I remember there was a 2.3 RUU upgrade
that came in the form of an .exe and you just needed to plug your phone in, the .exe would do all the upgrading stuff for you.

Yeah. Ruu's are usually the last things that can save your roms.

I am even more of a noob than anyone else I've seen on here.
I am a college student, and I'm considered the best programmer in my class, so I was hired by my school to develop a mobile app for the admissions department. One of my classmates already developed one for apple, but he graduated, so my job is to create one for Android. They are fully aware that mobile app development is not taught here, and none of the people I will be working with knows anything about it either, so it is going to be interesting, to say the least.
My best language is C#, so Java should be no problem, but I am completely at a loss as to where to start. All the app development information I've been able to find is geared toward Ice Cream Sandwich, but I want to make sure my app works on Gingerbread because of its huge market share, plus anything newer.
I've looked at the "beginners" threads on here but I don't understand even half of what people are saying (I speak geek but it's a completely different dialect lol). Is there a resource somewhere where a good C#, Visual Basic, and SQL programmer can teach herself something completely new, and do it right?

[HELP] Problems with Desire after recovery

Hi guys,
I´ve got a stock Desire with Android 2.2.2. (OTA update some two years ago). Some days ago I noticed my camera was not working nor did the flashlight app. After turning off and on the device a couple of times the flashlight started working again but not the camera. Trying to fix what I thought might be a software problem I went into Hboot menu and into recovery and selected reboot. Nothing seemed to have changed until i noticed my battery was only lasting for 4 or 5 hours when it used to last at least 1,5 days. Also, I just noticed my 3G mobile network connection is not working either.
How may I correct this? I've already tried a factory reset but without success. I was just looking at an youtube video from a XDA member about flashing RUU's and thought that it might do it. Is there a difference between flashing a RUU and a factory reset? I'm not very confortable doing it as I've never rooted or flashed any device, but I'm willing to take the chance...

Flashing a ruu is basically reinstalling the stock firmware. Factory resetting is just wiping the data on the phone.
If you want to flash a ruu, check my sig. Download the 2.3 ruu. Don't change the zip name. Take the zip and put it on the root of your sd-card, and boot in hboot. Then select "yes" and wait.
This will upgrade your firmware to Android 2.3.3, which is faster than froyo, but it will wipe all your internal data.

Now it´s clearer to me. Factory reset doesn't correct any system issues.
I already found the RUU i currently have on my phone, but maybe I could upgrade to 2.3. Does the RUU in your sig work for my Desire?
My data are:
Andriod version: 2.2.2.
Baseband: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gfa401c
Software number: 2.29.405.14
Just a small update concerning the battery issue: it seems to be the battery itself which is the problem. I installed a new one last night and now battery behaviour is back to normal. I will try the old one again though, in order to be sure it's gone.

The ruu in my sig works for your desire. It actually works for almost every Bravo on the market.

I just managed to correct my 3G problem also. I didn't restore the network definitions after the factory reset (didn't know I had to or how it is done ), but after a quick call to tech support it is fixed.
Now I will probably give the RUU update a try and also root and s-off (must resaerch a little more - XDA forum has tones of good info :good...

Hi, some developments and more help needed
Followed the guides above and now my Desire is rooted, s-offed using revolutionary and 4ext recovery is installed and I've partitioned my new 32 GB sdcard with 2GB ext4. Sadly, I've not updated to android 2.3.3 with the PB99IMG RUU, so I'm still with the 2.2.2.
But, even after sd partition, my available internal memory has not increased. What do I have to do to install all new apps on the sd?
If I update now for 2.3.3. using PB99IMG will I lose root and s-off? If I have to flash a new rom, which do you suggest? I'm used to the stock htc sense and don't really want to upgrade unless I have to.
I would really appreciate any suggestions...

Don't use the RUU. You will lose root and s-off. Just install a custom rom, and your storage will increase.

Could you please suggest a stable rom based on gingerbread with htc sense (early versions prefered) and also point out a detailed noob friendly tutoorial for flashing roms? I must do some more research but if you could point me out in the right direction it would be very useful

ealry sense rom? then i would choose either InsertCoin
or Cool Droid v3
