I have looked on the forums but i haven't found a clear answer to this. If someone wants to give me a link to whatever post explains it, please do, since i'm sure i'm asking something that's already been answered somewhere.
I used the unrevoked method to root the phone:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Do i need to do something beyond that in order to load on a custom rom?
I used the clockworkmod to make a backup of the phone. If i load up a custom rom and decide i don't like it, will the clockworkmod remain on the phone or will the custom rom possibly replace it? If so, how do i restore the backup?
And lastly - how do i actually go about installing another rom? I wanted to try the Fresh rom. I looked at the thread on here for it but i didn't see any directions as to how to go about actually installing it.
Anyone? I'm sure this has been answered before - if someone can just give me the link to the thread i'll go read it. I just haven't had any luck finding the answer on my own.
once you have done unrevoked you should be good to flash roms youc an verify this by looking in the bootloader to see if it shows S off at the top.
To flash a rom first download what ever rom you want and place it on your sd card. boot to recovery and wipe dalvik, data and cache. then select install zip from sd. navigate to the rom and select it and you should flash the new rom. go back and select reboot phone. it will boot up and will take longer then it normally does while it does its magic and you should then boot to the new rom.
Clockwork will not be changed by the rom so no worries there and you can easily restore it by going to the same option you did to make the back up you should see restore. select the back upa nd poof your on your way.
Thanks a lot for the info omega. It does indeed show S-OFF at the top of the boot loader screen.
So just to be clear:
i go into the boot menu, go into recovery, select
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
advanced - wipe dalvik
and then do install zip from sdcard (after i've uploaded the rom zip file)
oh and one last question - if i want to restore it to what i have now, do i just use clockwork to restore the backup i made? or do i have to flash the original rom on there first?
Thanks again for the info

i saw a few people mention that but i also saw a few people mention having problems with it, so i thought it best/safer if i did it myself. Or at least i should know how to do it myself in case using something like rom manager doesn't work.
for the manual way you are spot on with the instructions, to restore you won't need to wipe, just nandroid> restore

ok cool, thanks for the help
So far so good, but that's where I'm stalled, all I seem to read are other either bricking their phone or using ROM manager and things not going right, I would like to.use cyanogenmod 7 with an easy to do explanation to get 2.3
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
1. Nandroid backup
2. Update your radio! New radio from HTC 2.2+ roms is required (Desire Radio Thread).
3. Partition your SD Card - FAT32 + 512Mb Ext3/4. (if you want A2SD)
4. WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition).
5. Flash the ROM. (do not restart yet)
6. Flash the Google Addon . (now you ready to go)
Optionally S-OFF and flash CM7 HBOOT, more space for apps on internal memory and overally faster.
Hello, what are you running at the moment... Froyo (Android 2.2)? Also what radio are you using? Check "baseband" in the About Phone section in Settings. Read through the forum topic to see what radio is recommended as well.
You may want to partition your SDCard so you can install more apps, or go S-OFF to make even more space etc (more chance of bricking).
Whatever you do theres a chance of bricking your phone, but follow what I'm about to put and you won't go far wrong.
1. Download the ROM
2. Reboot in to custom recovery (ROM Manager)
3. Go to Backup and Backup your ROM you're running now (this is called a "Nandriod")
4. Put the CM7 ROM on to you SDCard if you haven't done already
5. Factory Reset (in your custom recovery)
6. Install Zip from SDCard
7. Wait until its finished, then reboot.
8. You should be running CM7!
Hope this helps!
Oh and next time? Use the search function on this forum first. Theres a nice Sticky Topic in the "Desire Android Development" section which has a nice tutorial to do with flashing your phone.

Thanks at the moment running 2.2 but did that last year with goldcard mate did it for me , baseband
32.49.00.32u_5.11.05.27 don't know how to check radio, that's only trouble I don't want to brick it so hope your advice is sound and easy to follow, many thanks ps I have looked in different forums everybody seems to have a different way of doing things and there's so many to look at, hope this works ta

So I don't need to do s-off in order to flash a new rom?
I've just rooted and made a backup with CM rom manager. What would happen if i do factory reset in the Settings menu?

Nop, you can flash custom roms without needing s-off.

Your phone will be reset to factory settings lol
Thanks for your replies.
I'm on custom rom now. If i choose factory reset, will it come back to stock room unrooted? Or it just comes back to initial settings of the new rooted rom?

Hi all,
Im an experienced WM developer and switching to Android as a user,
I Got I9003 and working very fine with me, my device is Arabic enabled,
I have flashed my mobile more than 10 times( using I9003JPKE1_OJPKC2_JXKA4 and Odin) because of trying to get Vanilla Unlock and the nice theme here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112991&page=8
my Questions are:
1.what is the best backup software that restore everything and settings by itself(astro Sux)
2.how to get the ClockWorkMod for my device instead of the stupid glass lock, I followed the instructions
and my device stuck on the samsung screen and keep restarting(what should I do in this case? i tried everything just flashing works and :S)
3. what to do exactly to get theme Ultimate-Bule-tripin in my version?
4. what else i should know
my device info:
2.2.1
kernel [email protected] #1
build: FROYO.JPKE1
Baseband:I9003JXKA4
thanks all in advance.
1. Titanium Backup
Others i dont know If CF-Root doesnt work, no idea (=
thanks man, will the free version do it for me or must be pro?
The Titanium free version hasn't mega-useful Batch operations. So if you have many apps to backup, it'll be incredible long story to backup them one-by-one on free version. So, get Full version, or try MyBackup Pro app, or use a nandroid backup using ClockWorkMod. Btw, CWM isn't a replacement for lockscreen, it's recovery mode mod allowing to do some useful operations (such as backup, wipe caches e.g. etc.)
Or you can use Google and get the full version, i'm not sure if i can give you any link, so i wont, but if you know how to use google you can find it without a problem
Hint: mobilism
#2 question...download ROM manager and select flash clockwork recovery, then it should give you an option to choose your device. Download CWMod for your phone. You should now have latest clockwork.

my Questions are:
1.what is the best backup software that restore everything and settings by itself(astro Sux).
Ans: I think Titanium Backup will do the work most. Recommend that only restore APK without data as you may face force close in some apps. Beware that it does not backup APN setting. Please use APN Back&Restore in case APN is total wipe out. U can use CWM backup through recovery mode and restore. Beware sometime CWM can get corrupted and data restore will have some force close after reboot
2.how to get the ClockWorkMod for my device instead of the stupid glass lock, I followed the instructions
and my device stuck on the samsung screen and keep restarting(what should I do in this case? i tried everything just flashing works and :S)
Ans: Glass lock has nothing to do with CWM. It is the laucher bug issue. Sometime is best to install 2 or more laucher in your rom. Just flash another laucher through ODIN will work.
3. what to do exactly to get theme Ultimate-Bule-tripin in my version?
Ans: Feedback the bug you are having to the theme developer. They should know how to fix it. Is thier duty to provide solution.
4. what else i should know
Ans: You may find that not all products suite you and not all product developed is perfect. Keep flashing for the right one, learn from mistake, pick-up the error and google your problem for solution. Standby your spare phone in case your phone is totally knock down and cannot be restart.
cheer
As a very good FREE backup tool I'm using My Backup Root (from the market). You need to have your phone rooted but it works very nice.
Thanks a lot guys, you helped me well, I mentioned the CWM because to install the update.zip which requires CWM to install because of the signature, I flashed the CWM several times with different versions but same results on startup I really like the Ultimate-Bule-tripin with the vanilla lock and i'll sell the phone if i couldnt get it

I have read the thread,
1) Did you meet the requirement??
Requirements:
-XXKB3 FW
-Deodexed framework is mandatory
2) Have you try install zip from sd card with CWM recovery? CWM provide install zip from sd card, you can explore where have you save the file and execute it. You does not need to rename the file to update.zip.
the problem is i cant install the CWM to my device, every time i install it via odin the device does not start and then i have to flash it, how can i find a version compatible with my device firmware ver?
my device info are :2.2.1
kernel [email protected] #1
build: FROYO.JPKE1
Baseband:I9003JXKA4
so which FW i am????
and i cant see any KB3( btw pleaaaaase tell me which section must have this code????)
Please provide the link to flash CWM for your I9003. I need to look at it.
Update: CWM only work for I9000, there are developer trying to get CWM working on the I9003 device.
I guess whithin 2-3 week time, CWM should be available for your device.

thanks in forward, your help appreciated
can u please tell me which FW i have? and which section is supposed to have KB3(KBX)????
ps:my device must have Arabic lang.
You are having the latest ASIAN Froyo Firmware. Your device should be compatible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004647.
CWM does not work for your device for now. To solve your problem, try to download Root Explorer Pro version from market (Need to buy). Then you can copy the downloaded theme file into your system.
By the way, i'm from SGS I9000 device. Not from I9003. There might be some different to replace file directory.
Good Luck.
Thank Button, please.
can u please just give me the brief steps to install the theme using the root explorer?
does it need more than rooted device or must be deodexed??
btw i always thank but now it gives me
Sorry, you are limited to five thanks per day
Thanks man, i got it done, i have deodexed my I9003 from this Thread
and then managed to copy the vanilla lock apks via ADB shell, now i can use my Android
Hey
Im going to use the SuperWipeG2(+) to start fresh. Before I have a couple of questions:
Whats the official site for SuperWipeG2(+)? The thread says to download it from there.
Can SuperWipeG2(+) be used on a Desire Z?
It says there has to be a NANDroid backup; Can I just put a ROM already on the SD card, run SuperWipeG2(+), go to recovery, select that ROM and then simply flash it?
Thanks for all the replies.

There doesn't have to be a NANDroid backup but it is always advisable to do one before you flash anything in recovery.
You flash superwipe in exactly the same manner you would flash a rom. Once superwipe has finished and cwm has rebooted you flash the rom.
And it works fine with the DZ I use it all the time

So with a bit of searching I have made some progress with my SGS2 sgh-t989 in regards to modding.
I want to get YOUR opinion of my setup thus far and see if I am missing any essentials be it apps methods etc before I start test driving mods like CM and what not.
so straight to it shall we.
Device: Samsung Galaxy S2
Model: SGH-T989
Carrier: Tmobile
Current ROM: Android ICS 4.0.4
Baseband: T989UVLI4
Build Number: IMM76D.UVLI4
Rooted with SuperSU (pro).
Rom Manager Premium Installed and working.
CWM-Recovery (touch) Version 6.0.2.8 Flashed and working.
TIB (pro) installed and working.
Current ROM has been backed up via Rom Manager and the associated files placed on my PC for safe keeping.
Odin is also present on my PC
Kies is also present on my PC
The current drivers for my SGS2 have been installed
PC OS :Windows7 Pro (Also have access to linux via dual boot if that could play a part in this)
Honestly im not sure what else I should grab or get for my android bat belt as it were LOL...hence the ready check post.
That being said I am all eyes and ears for any other suggestions to make my ROM experience as enjoyable as possible.
Thanks in Advance.
Impressive setup. Better than mine in fact because I have Windows 8
Also by Rom Manager did you mean CWM?
I had mine the exact same way, but I took a lot of screenshots for before and after pictures to show my brother
Don't use ROM manager to backup with or to boot into recovery. If you want to make a backup boot into recovery manually unless you have toggles and or 4 way boot menu. Please don't flash from ROM manager. Not telling you what to do just trying to give some friendly advice.

I definitely prefer TWRP for flashing ROMs. I always wipe cache, wipe davlik, factory reset, wipe system, then flash ROM & gapps if needed. Def follow individual op instructions tho.

as others have said. don't use rom manager.
as long as you have a custom recovery, you are good to go. Since you have TB, make sure you set your backup directory to your external SD card, not the internal one, and back up your apps there.
After that, make a rom backup in your recovery, and then wipe, and flash a new rom.zip file. that's it.
