Car mount

I've never had an android phone before (or any smart phone) and I am thinking of a captivate.
Are there any good car mount systems? It would be nice to have a built in charger and maybe speakers/mic.

there was a question about this already, no worries. Theres a member on here that might do a custum one for you. However, seeing how the phone hasnt been released yet, there will be tons of car mounts for it once its legally on shelves.

got a fairly generic response from the leader in custom car mounts, ProClipUSA today regarding the question I posed them about the Captivate and the awkward charging solution they would have to rig up, here's their reply:
Thank you for your interest in our ProClip Holders. At this time we do not have a Holder for your requested device. We do anticipate making one, however due to the large number of new products we are developing, we cannot give a specific date as to when this will be available. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as the Holder has been received at our warehouse and is ready for online ordering.
The Charging might work as with the European version of the Galaxy S Phone:

Yep, I would have to say that's exactly what I'm looking for! They will also offer it without any type of charging solution (picture again is of the international Galaxy S phone):
which will run about $25 if I'm not mistaken (the ones above will run about $75 for the cig plug and $100 for the hard wire, based on past purchases with them), but I had such a hard time trying to wiggle in the power plug EVERY time I inserted my Touch Pro2 to their mount, and that was easily accessed from the bottom - try doing that on the TOP now where it will most likely be in a tough angle mounted up against something in your car...... yeah, I'll just go with the built-in charging solution this time, thanks!

if you're a little crafty, I used an old iphone case (a stretchy silicone one) and a tom tom mount to make my own. it'll cost less than 10 bucks like that, but if you buy the body glove it'll look much nicer but also cost 25 bucks more and since it's permanently attached to the mount, it would serve one purpose only.
but that coupled with a micro usb charger and I have a slick mount.

Damn, that's nice but i really hate those designed for dash mounting.... And for that price without charging capabilities (using the GPS on a long trip would kill a battery fast!), better spend the extra few dollars on the ProClip would be much smarter

Ohh, read it [too] quickly on the phone. How does that work??? Doesn't look like there's any room for the charger in there and they don't say whether it is hard-wired or a cigarette lighter plug.....

That Sammy official one looks pretty good, but I really can't justify $60 for a car dock. I'd be willing to pay $25-30 for a good one, but that's about my limit, even for something with a built in charger.

Is there a reason nobody's looking into universal car mounts?
On Amazon, you can get a decent looking universal car mount for ~$8, and a USB car charger for around $3.
It just squeezes to the size of your phone, with gravity resting it on the bottom side...

Could you live with this as a low tech Home "Dock" solution?

It looks like a cheap-o universal one with the same type of "TipExchange Technology" that Kensington uses for their laptop chargers - meaning, they give you a $0.02 charger and you can switch out the tips on it to make it fit your device, which this thing doesn't do just by inserting the phones as the other ones above do, and like I said before, this doesn't feel like the device IMO to have to fumble around with inserting the charger into the port - as easy and painless as possible is how this dash mount will go for me!
Not trying to sound conceited or superficial...... but I sure as hell won't have that thing clipped on to the interior of my car! Wait and spend ~ $20 more for a much better solution, I would suggest - it will be worth it to do it right the first time and not have the hassle of sending that monstrosity back to Amazon!

I have used their clip for my Fuze, and now all I need to do is replace the device part. You put in your car type and device type and get a great holder, and for these types of phones you can get a swivel mount to put it into landscape or portrait mode.

Thanks for your opinion. What brand do you recommend - what should I be looking out for?

Just wait for ProClip - they said they are coming out with one, as they do for just about every phone invented, and it will fit like a glove, have built in charging options (see my earlier post), and not take up a lot of real estate on the dash by being so damn unsightly.... Once you buy the car mount, as lordmaxx described, all you have to do is buy new device mounts when you get them! Then buy new car mounts when you buy different cars! It is almost too easy....
You can get pretty creative with mounting solutions too. On my Honda, instead of buying the more expensive swivel mount, I bought just the device mount without charging solution and used longer screws and screwed it right to a closed air vent to the right of the steering wheel, then ran a powered USB cable inside the dash. This way, it was ultra low profile and swiveled with the air vent! One unforeseen benefit of doing it this way was that when I use the phone on long trips with the A/C on, the tiny amount that escapes from the back of the air vent keeps the constantly charged phone cool for the entire duration!
Here's a pic of what it looked like with my OLD TyTN II and Zune 80GB - currently have the TP2 mount installed until the Captivate one is released! The cheap-o outside / inside temp gauge didn't work so well, so that was removed. This was my "work truck" for a while as I was the only vinyl graphic installer for the Marines here in Florida, and needed a "mobile office" as you can see! The untouched air vent on the right side shows you what it looked like before I mounted the ProClip on it! Vehicle is a 2004 Acura RSX Type-S A-Spec (DC5 chassis) for reference.

HTC Smart Vehicle Car Kit

htcpedia is showing the "smart" car kit on it's website now. Looks a lot like the old HD2 dock, sans the custom battery door shenanigans. It's a tad expensive, but it looks a little nicer and looks like it'll slide in better than the Verizon version. Another problem is of course, it DOESN'T support the extended battery.

Who proof read their site, a 3rd grader? Looks like the Chinese to English translator was off that day.

I don' see how that mount will work at all, the USB port is on the bottom of the mount, with the phone inserted vertically. Looks to be made for the Evo to me...

I ordered this kit from HTCPedia and the actual car mount looks nothing like the one depicted on their site. The actual kit was made for the HTC Thunderbolt and it supports the extended battery.

It is well worth the sixty dollars. It is quite sturdy and it can be positioned at nearly any angle. I paid one hundred dollars for the HTC HD2 mount, so I was pretty happy about the reduced price for this phone.

I'd like to see some pics as well.

Those pics doesn't show the Tbolt hooked up with the extended battery just the holder. It does hold the extended battery. HTCpedia had a video up showing it with the extended battery. The video is long gone. But if you look at the the curve in the back, that's for the extended battery.

I picked this car dock up from Newegg.com for $39.99. It's solid and I like the way it mounts so, physically, I love it. However, it doesn't charge the phone. When the phone is in the cradle, it automatically opens up Car Home (mildly annoying, but I guess that's to be expected), but it DOES NOT CHARGE! I'm very ticked off. I've tried it with three difference chargers, one of which is my home wall-wart charger.
It seems HTC is too busy cranking out phone after phone after phone and all the subsequent accessories, that the basic fundamental quality is lost.

I got one a few months ago from htcpedia with the same problem. After playing with the mount, I discovered there was a short in the mount somewhere causing charge to be erratic. Long story short, I got a RMA/replacement and the new unit works great.

I have included a video because there was a number of people that were concerned about the stability, holding power, and the ease of docking and undocking on a dock that was not designed for our phone. As you can see, the phone goes in and out of the dock with ease one handed. It also sits in the dock well tight enough to support the weight of the attached Mac Mini. The package includes the dock, it’s stand as well as an adhesive plate for mounting on the dash if desired. Although the dock does allow you to plug a power supply directly to the dock, the power supply is not included, which is pretty much the norm. The dock also has an audio output port, however when I tested this the audio is not rerouted to this port and comes from the speaker of the phone. The workaround for this is to plug the audio in to the headphone jack of the phone itself, which this dock does accommodate for. Last of all, as you can see from the pictures, the dock does have the proper cut outs for the speaker and camera on the back, so in theory you can always video your driving habits
Members on this Forum are reporting that they are picking up this dock from their Local AT&T stores for about $18. I purchased mine from Amazon HERE for over $30 and am very happy I did (though I wish I had found the $18 deal first).
Pros:
Easy to use
Does not require attaching power to the phone like a universal dock would
Hold the phone very well with little vibration
Cons:
Audio out from the dock does not seem to work with the Epic Touch --> UPDATE: As pointed out in the reply below, the audio out on the back of the dock works just fine if you adjust the settings.

The best price for the epic touch specific mount (from a reputable source) is still $39.99. Good amount of savings in this deal.

Audio out works you have to go into dock settings from the main settings menu and check audio mode.
Wanted to add more pros;
Bluetooth routes to headset instead of speakers if a call comes in
Media volume stays at last set instead if lowering once plugged in
Screen stays on instead of timing out.

Thanks for that. Very nice. Using the dock with a profile manager it is so simple to have the phone charge, port audio, turn up brightness to 100%, turn up media, turn on blue tooth, turn off WiFi, turn on screen tap audio, turn on GPS, and auto launch Slacker all just from docking the phone.
I ordered a 2nd one and an going to try to mount it on my Motocycle.

What's the name of the profile manager app are you using? The ones I tried doesn't go into landscape automatically when I dock my phone.

Profile Settings <-- Works great. Will enable/disable auto rotate if that is what you are looking for.
BTW, I set it so my phone also now auto connects to my Nissan's Built in Bluetooth Hands Free system. And as was pointed out, when using the dock, you do not have to unplug the AUX cable when a call comes in for them to hear you.

Just went to the AT&T store to pick up an Infuse car dock... rang up as $17.50. The sales guy tried to sell me the desktop dock as well. I asked how much it was, so he scanned it and it rang up for $0.01. There's a bundled discount when you buy both together. So I paid $17.51 total for the car dock and desktop dock.

Wow, thanks for that info! I bought the car dock yesterday, but will go back and see if they will retro the combo.

Picked up the car dock a few days ago after reading this thread. Great quality and design. Love it. Not perfect, but I've gotten worse for 2x the money.
Question: are your phones running HOT while plugged in? Unplugged temp on my phone runs about 80°F. Plugged in runs maybe 85°. Even if in a garage (not in the sun), this dock is getting my phone up to about 115°, I've seen 120+ in the sun. I think the issue is that it's reading the dock not as a simple charger plugin, but as a media addon (sorry - I have no idea what to call it. I hope that makes sense) and is maybe constantly running background processes, even when just used as a charger. (I'm not running ANY apps - no nav, no audio - it's simply plugged in, same as if I just ran a charger from the lighter). (Stock, non-rooted phone)
Just curious if anyone noticed this, or thinks they have an explanation. I'm just concerned about operating temps for when I DO run Nav and it's 110° out. (SoCal)
(All that said... off to ATT to see if I can add on that desk dock for $.01 without too much arguing and hassle.)

I've only used my Infuse car dock once since I got it, and noticed that my E4GT was very hot when I removed it. I used it for Google Navigation and the ambient temperature was only in the 60s F. I only drove about 30 minutes, and I suspect that another 30 minutes would have caused it to seriously overheat.
I had the same problem with the Evo in the official HTC car dock. It would get so hot that the charge light started flashing and it stopped charging. I blamed that on the 100+ degree Texas summer days, but now I wonder if there is a correlation. The E4GT didn't get that hot, but it felt like it was close.

Anyone else pre-order the iBOLT xProDock Kit for Samsung?

Having switched from an Evo 3D to the S3 (which i LOVE), I needed to buy a new car dock for the phone to use it in the car. With the 3D I was using Seidio's Car Dock and it was great. It was sturdy, and did everything I needed it to do. I started looking for something similar for the S3 and was initially going to go with the Infuse 4G dock, but, I have a Platinum Brand (Seidio) surface case - so, I needed something that could accommodate the extra bulk. Found the iBolt and liked it, seemed well built so I thought I'd give it a try. 50$ was sort of steep so I was glad to see that their new xProDock was coming out soon (was supposed to be TODAY) and was available for preorder.
Just checked this morning and now it's apparently delayed until the 31st of this month. Anyone else pre-order this or heard anything from iBolt?
I know that it's not uncommon for products to debut/ship later than originally stated - was just wondering if anyone else had any information? I'll be reaching out to iBolt at some point through out the day.

So it is confirmed that the new dock for samsung phones (this dock can accomodate our phones as well as the note and note 2 with its adjustable features) has been pushed back until the end of the month. Bummer.
I will wait non the less for my order to be shipped out!

damn. that sux. I ordered one on amazon. it hasn't shipped either. It was marked as saying it was supposed to ship on the 6th, but it never did.
Better late than never, but i really want this thing!

I wonder if they're pulling the product out for "re-design" due to all the new phones introduced in CES?

iBolt has stated that the reason for the delay with the Samsung dock is because of the AUX out cable, they are ready to ship the actual units but the aux cables aren't ready.
I wonder if there is a reason behind this

I understand that, but usually the seller will leave the product page on and just state something like "launched in Q2". But iBolt PULLED OUT the product page, even from large online retailer like Amazon, which is intriguing.
I really hope they still sell it though.. I need a car docking station that:
1). Recognize car mode
2). Accept phone in case

Damn that sucks.I just bought the Samsung oem universal car dock.

I saw the dock was on pre-order in BOTH Android Shop (from Android Central) and Amazon, before uge seller pulled out from Amazon.
I had bad experiences with Android Shop...will never buy from them again.

I Just received a phone call from iBolt today. Apparently they had sent me an email last week apologizing for the delay and offering me a choice of a free gift for the inconvenience.
The woman from iBolt told me that the hold up is the "pigtail." She explained it as the small cable on the unit itself. That is not in yet; and won't be until February. She told me that they are shipping out the rest of the dock today and will send out the cable when it is available.
She gave me a choice of a Miro USB to cigarette lighter adapter that would allow me to start using my dock immediately, or a MHL cable and adapter that would allow me to view video output from my Note 2 to a HDTV. I chose option 2. I already have several USB to cigarette adapters.
I have to say, this company has done right by me. They acknowledge their mistake and try to make it right with the offer. I guess i am used to "customer service" on the other side (my pre-Android days) where a company would blame you for the problems and tell you you are holding it wrong!
All jokes aside, I am very satisfied with this resolution for the delay.

it was through Amazon.com

The dock was available for preorder through Amazon then taken down.
but GOOD NEWS! I got an message from them saying that they had shipped the dock. So i should be getting it soon. Others who have ordered should be receiving notification soon

It's the best car mount , can be attached to literally ANYTHING include all those curved dashboard ...
I drive on Seat Leon MK1 and the dashboard is a bit curved , tried lots of those eBay cheap ones before and nothing can be compared

while this Osomount seems to be the same they are actually different ( the holder itself is different ) the winnergear one is holding the device way better ( lots of reviews on those 2 and the MONTAR always wins ) ...
I'm not sure but it also seems that this osomount tried to copy winnergear product ... any way maybe you right maybe no .. I'll stick with WinnerGear as it really seems they are the original ones and as I already learned about the online market pictures can't tell you NOTHING !

IMHO, the "best" mount will always have power and drop in the phone. Connecting and disconnecting a power cord when in and out of the car is a joke. Having the cord dangling from the phone, our just laying about waiting for the phone, is ugly.
I have a Galaxy Nexus with power and audio always plugged in. It's mounted near the pillar, wires tucked into the trim. Very clean. Drop it in and it's charging and playing to the stereo. Universal mounts can only be the "best universal", never the best for a specific phone.
This topic looks like an advertisement for the universal mount.

Google/LG need to come out with a solution as good as HTC did for the Sensation 4G.

I picked up one of these. It is easy to insert and remove the phone. The suction cup grips my dash really well, there is no way this thing is coming loose. The mount is not too large so it does not take up a lot of space on your dash and it is well made.
Here are some photos of the mount with my HTC One. I will post some photos of the Nexus 5 when I get it in soon.

Absolutely. The biggest thing I will miss about my Evo LTE is the car dock. Like you said for your Nexus, you just drop it in....screen turns on, connects bluetooth and starts streaming music, loads up a car dock app, and starts charging. All without even needing to touch a button(including needing to turn the screen on) or scanning a nfc tag. I'm thinking of finding a quality qi car charging dock and setting up something with Tasker to auto launch. Without a dedicated function for the Nexus 5 I can't really think of any other way to replicate what I'll be missing. I remember when I bought the dock I thought I would return it thinking it would not be worth keeping.....boy was I wrong.

When I saw this thread I wanted to immediately mention the Aduro mount. I originally was checking out the MONTAR however when I checked out the site the shipping took a very long time, the price was fairly high and I have heard bad reviews from people about never even receiving the product. I saw the Aduro mount and noticed it looked very similar to the Montar. I grabbed it for about half the cost (maybe even less) and I have been using it since April. It stays on great and I only had it come off twice when it got really hot. But considering I've been using it from about april until sept almost daily I think that's pretty damn good. Anyway, I def recommend the Aduro one. (No, I'm not getting paid to say all this. I just really think that especially for the price it's a great deal.) Hopefully I'm not jynxing it haha.

Probably because then you have to fumble around with plugging the cable into your phone while it's on the dock, or plugging the phone in and then putting it on the dock... and it just tends to look a little odd. Though i must say that i'm hoping the magnets in the back panel of the N5 that are used for the Qi wireless charging are decent, or at least not of an opposite polarity, because then using this mount would be a dream.

Kinda tempted to (when i get paid again) buy a cheapy Qi charging pad on eBay, and rip it apart, to see just how much exactly is inside it, and if it might possibly be able to be rigged up to/into the iMagnet dock somehow. Would be the best of both worlds. A good strong magnetic gripping dash mount that can charge at the same time.... no cables, no phone clamps.

All hideous. I'll wait for proclip to release one. Above and beyond the best looking car mounts available.

Surprised there hasn't been a kick starter project for a good wireless car dock

Absolutely Agree, I have this on my HTC and I can throw it into the clip with one hand as I an starting the car with the other.
I am busting to buy the Nexus 5, but not until I get a decent mount.
Why can't google make accessories!!!!!

Absolutely. I have the exact same setup with my Galaxy Nexus, I loved the official Samsung Car Dock for it.
Unfortunately if you take the Nexus 4 as an example there was never an official car dock released and all the third party car docks were rubbish due to them being universal. So I do not expect that we will get one for the Nexus 5.
I think it's going to require a DIY job. Without the pogo pins it will need a different solution, I guess the only option is wireless charging. For audio it will have to be Bluetooth. I just hope the wireless charging can provide enough current, as screen on full brightness, Bluetooth, GPS, and navigation all take a mighty toll on the battery so you really need the full charging current possible just to stop the phone using more power than it is getting from the charger.
Bought myself an OwlPad. I shall see how it goes.
