[Q] [HELP PLEASE] Odin is frozen - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

its stuck at factoryrfs.rfs what should i doo?? im trying to go from EC05 to EB13 for the viper synergy rom 5.0 should i go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209 and try this method? i thought you had to put the tar in the phone slot but this states to put it in the pda slot.. Help please??

Is your firewall and antivirus disabled? Mine was blocking it and it would freeze.

I have AVG should I uninstall it for now.. I completely bricked my last epic somehow using odin.. sh!t i hope this works

Happened to me a few times when using odin, and from what I could tell it was an issue with the cable I was using.
Shorter cables seem to work better for flashing, since there's less resistance in the wire and therefore (I assume) you get a better connection.
When it froze at something like that for me, I just pulled the battery and tried again. Eventually it always went through, and never bricked my phone. YMMV though

yeah i do have a long cable.. i tried running as administrator and changes usb ports... if anyone has ANY type of advice please send it my way.. Thank you

SOOOO i fixed it i used the link provided at the top thank you everyone i hope this will help someone in my situation.. im now running Froyo.EB13 soon synergy viper rom 5.0

Antivirus software usually blocks and deletes rageagainsthecage.bin as it is considered a Unix exploit...duh
I usually set it to go to sleep for an hour. Firewall software shouldn't make any difference.

Not syncing with Computer anymore. HELP!

Ok, my phone was getting low on battery and started going haywire. I charged and reflashed the rom but now my phone wont sync with my comp after trying numerous things. It was the truly epic rebirth rom.
Any idea what might have happened? I tred different usb cables, rebooting drivers but nothing. The phone still charges but no syncing. Is there a internal driver in the phone that syncs the phone that might have been corrupted?
BTW I posted this to impalers747 Q/A thread but we seemed to be stumped to. Thanks for tryin yogi and impaler747 but I figure more people might see this if I make a thread and someone might of had a similar issue.
Odin back to DK28 and reflash the ROM. There might be another way, but that is what I would do.

When you put your phone in download mode, Odin doesn't see it? (Not trying to sound sarcastic, just making sure I get where you are at)

I haven't done this, but you should be able to use CW to flash your phone back to the stock ROM and then go from there. Here is a link for an older thread that discussed it and has links to the stock ROM. I am hoping you can get into CW, and if you can you should be able to flash from your sd card

You still should be able to. I think this would fix your problem. And you can always use CW to get back to a rooted DK28 instead of using one click root. Or, if you haven't already tried, you could wipe and try a different ROM. The sync could just be a DK28 issue and a different ROM might have what makes it work.

Hopefully you nandroid your device?
I had a problem with connecting my device to my laptop. My laptop would never see my phone but odin was still able to see it with some playing around. This happened to me on di18. In order for me to get back to dk28 I had to odin the extended tar so I had root and everything.
Before trying to odin I cleaned out the micro usb port on the phone with a q-tip tabed in rubing achole. I even switched to my girls blackberry charger. I no longer have issues even when using my samsung cable but I try to use either my evo or her blackberry cable. Before doing any of this I suggest uninstalling and re-installing the proper drivers.

Ill try and clean it out but even odin wont read it but the damn thing still charges. I even went to sprint to check it out on there comp but im guessing they didnt have the drivers installed as most of them didnt have too much knowledge on rooting and flashing.
i tried reinstalling drivers about 5 times lol
quick question 4 u guys before i take the plunge on stocking back the epic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864348
based on post 9 I would just
1: flash the dk18 modem?
2: then flash the stock rom?
3. remove cwm?
does that make sense?
I mean I would want to keep cwm till the end just incase something goes haywire and I can restore

What ext4 script? Stock di18 and stock dk28 don't have ext4. So if you are on plain jane dk28, then you aren't on ext4. And if you are going to di18, you aren't converting to ext4.
I had ext4 script otherwise i wouldnt been able to install those new roms before the update. Im not sure what to do from here now since I'm back to stock backup and rom manager doesnt work for ****

[Q] HELP PLEASE! bricked or semi bricked...

either way im screwed, i have been searching for hours and i knew the risks involved but i proceeded anyway. not blaming anyone just asking for some help please. im 700 miles from home sitting in a truckstop gameroom leeching of mcds wifi cause they are closed all i have is my laptop and phone. i have looked at several posts and have tried different things with hiemdall and odin including downloading files multiple times, different cables, different usb ports, and nothing is working. im really freaking out here. please help...
Don't panic.
What did you do to brick it?
In Odin, flash full stock ec05 with only auto reboot checked

If all goes bad, bring it in to sprint and say it said there was an update and now it isn't working.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
lol ok thanks that was good thinking to blame them for it phone was rooted using superoneclick and i couldnt get cwm to work to flash any roms, so i thought i would go back to stock and start from scratch. so i downloaded everything like the many tutorials said followed everything step by step and now it wont do anything except download mode. so do you think if all else fails blaming sprint for the brick will work?
Ok you can get into download mode that's great so go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813 it has instruction and links to the tar u need to download and odin very easy don't wory very easy
ive downloaded the stock tar from about 3 maybe 4 different threads and was using odin. is there a smaller tar available? i have been trying to fix my phone for hours upon hours and the stock tar takes awhile to download on this connection. thank you guys for all the responses so late guys, please keep them coming.
Thats the only tar you need . It is a large file your going to have to wait and let it download. At this point it is your only option. Wait and let it download . its the ec05 tar and the only way your going to be able to fix your phone now. Pull out your phones batt so it does not die and wait for the tar to download , and then follow those directions to odin it and you will be back up and runing
ok thank you. i know i have to be patient, its just hard when im working against the clock. ill update in a bit if it works
Sooo, you installed the ei22 update with your current clockwork? I'm confused now. If u have a pc, just odin ec05 once in download mode and re-receive the ei22 ota download. Boom, you'll have a working phone.

Thats Qbking77's video on how to bring your phone back to stock its also a brick fix, when i first put a rom on my phone something went wrong and i was bricked, that helped. Then id suggest using OneClickRoot and CWM. He also has a video on that. its this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymN1H2e9YMk hope everything turns out for you. These videos helped me a lot.
b16flybye, you know what i am extremely grateful for those that are trying to help my fix my phone, however you dont seem like your helping much. ill admit im a noob when it comes to this stuff, how ever im not when it comes to dealing with electronics repair and computers. and i wouldnt be freaking out so much if i didnt NEED my phone for work and IF i wasnt so FAR from home with no real access to the internet. i get that you are smart and experienced in dealing with this sort of thing but id be willing to bet that you too were once a noob that prob messed up a phone or 2. so if you would like to help try breaking your first post down, if not then just keep you high and mighty comments to yourself.
****update****
ok so the wifi connection i was on last night sucked. it would get halfway through and then just stop and say the download was interupted. so yet again im sitting in another mcdonalds trying again tonight to download it. to clarify what i did maybe for other people. i was trying to flash the gb update from qbkings thread. CWM was not installed on my phone so i was having problems getting it to work. i tried some different things to unroot my phone so i could start over but none of it worked so i thought i would just flash using odin back to stock rom. i figured out that the stock one i was downloading said it completed but only about 20MB downloaded so when i flashed it was the incomplete rom and that then bricked the phone. once again thank you to everyone who took the time to answer last night to help me out. i may have some more q's but for now im just trying to download that one file.
ok another update... so i finally have the file downloaded and now i cant get my phone to go into download mode...i have 3 different cables and have tried each of them, 2 usb ports and have hooked each cable and 2 batteries nothing is working...any suggestions?
Take your battery out for about 45 minutes then put it back plug in charger. If still nothing try geting into download mode with out the battery in. If still no dice either your battery is dead and u need to find a way to charge it then try again or your now hard brickd and u need to order or make a usb jig to fix it oh u saidbu have 2 batterys so now most likely you are hard brickd. Here read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954458 your going to need to get one of those now. Order that it will get you into download mode thdn u still neex to odin that tar. And 20 megabytes is wayyy to small that tar file is 291 mb
k thanks i have the full tar. go figure my phone would be hard bricked. i didnt do anything to it since last night but try to get that file to download. once again i dont have access to any resistors i checked the pos and neg pins on the phone with the battery out and they have juice to them with the charger plugged in. is there another way? i have the plug just no resistors.
im quoting this from another thread( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813&page=21 ) but does anyone know if this will work? anyone tried it?

As for the poster one above, how much do you charge with that donate button if you know how to revive my phone? I don't see how it can ever be fixed, because it wouldn't do anything...not even open download mode, no showing battery charging pix, nothing.
Leave the battery out, remove the microSD card, hold down the power button and leave unplugged for a bit, then plug in to computer while holding down 1 and power. This will hopefully get you back in download mode.

try leaving your battery out and plugging it into the computer and put it into download mode without the battery in... i have had success with doing this and i know other people have also

I think i bricked my epic.

I was angry at my current rom which was on MTD so i decided just to you the old samsung "phone flash utility" (Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe) that was uploaded on their site like a year ago to go back to stock. well i think since the phone was MTD it didnt work and now its stock at the connect cable screen, is there anything i can do?
I am running CleanGB MTD. The first time I tried to install it I had a bad download & needed to redo it from scratch. I used the Samsung EB13 Windows Installer utility to restore my phone back to stock & had no problems at all. It was up & running on MTD just had a few errors that I did not have time to fix that morning & I ran it for a few days after restoring with the utility, rooting, & restoring my backup. But now I'm enjoying the MTD goodness.....
Can you get back into download mode?
If so I would get a different USB cable & try running the installer again.

from what ive been reading on the threads, i believe you can just odin back, and back sure you have reboot and re-partition checked marked.
I found out what the problem was. I should have known this because this happened to me once before. I was using my front USB ports. Front ports on most pc's are only 1.0 and you need to use the back 2.0 ones to work. Most people think its cable issues but its usually just USB port. This samsung utility is a complete gem! screw odin. thanks for the response!!!

Wow, I didn't know this exe thing existed. Odin has NOT been working on my home PC for tje past few weeks(months?) and that has kept me from trying anything that would require Odin to recover from, i.e. mtd.
Glad I read here in the Q&A pretty regularly. Most of the time I'm seeing if there's anyone I can help, but times like this I end up learning new things.

I am at work so I cannot post the file I have, but I put the file name in & searched in Google & several download options popped up.
Google Search: Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe
Check it out & let me know if you need me to post a copy of the file, I saw several already on services like multiupload in the search.
Look at the thread stickied in development. The Samsung tool won't work all the time.

So my friend gave me his phone to see if I could fix it. It loops in CWM and won't get out of it and I can't connect with odin to it. (My phone connects just fine.) This is the only other thing I can think of. Anyone else got other ideas?

Well tried it and phone still not discovered by the PC. I am at a loss at what to do. I know my friend tried to install some type of rom to it and didn't make a backup. It boots in to CWM non-stop and I can flash zips but it never leaves that loop even after the flashes. I can boot into Download mode but the phone won't be recognized. Tried both Odin and this. The phone is getting charged through the cable though which confuses me even more. Any help?!

Use a different cable with odin... it may be charging it but its not getting a data connection... also put into download mode and plug in usb... then "jiggle" the cord until it recognizes it...

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Then also try Odin with the battery and phone plugged in. Make sure you use a better cable than stock.

[Q] Semi(Soft)-Bricked Unflashable Epic - What to do now?

*First of all, let me say that this is a repost from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310&page=27), and I apologize for that fact. I have been severely neglecting food and sleep trying to fix my phone, and I really, really didn't feel like typing the whole damned story up again. Any assistance or insight would be deeply appreciated...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I did it this time I think. I've hacked, modded, wiped, and flashed my phone since I got it last year, and although I've gotten to places where I thought I had totally fuxored things up beyond recovery, every single time in the past I've been able to bring it back from the brink of oblivion. I am exceedingly resourceful and tenacious, which can be both a good and bad thing. Good thing when I am able to fix things that seem unfixable. Bad when I forget about things like eating or sleeping.
Here's the present situation: 4 days ago I was trying to flash a new modem (FB15)(something I know well how to do as I've done it many, many times before) through Odin, when it stalled out near the beginning of the process. This is not unusual with Odin, so I've gotten into the habit of closing it, pulling the battery, and starting again. This time, however, no matter what I've tried, I cannot get Odin to successfully flash. It fails every single time. Either that or it stalls yet again.
At the moment I can only get into 2 modes on my phone: download mode (which can't actually download anything apparently) and the very unpleasant computer--!--phone screen when I try to boot it up or go into recovery. This is the longest my phone has been unusable. I've been intensely focused on fixing it since it was semi-bricked. The ridiculously frustrating and annoying thing is that the computer I'm using (and I've used multiple to try to fix this across Windows, Linux, and Mac) usually says "USB device not recognized" when I plug my phone in while in download mode, no matter the state of the drivers, and when it does recognize it and it is visible in Odin, it means nothing because Odin fails no matter what file I'm trying to flash. When the computer and Odin DO recognize the phone, and when Odin doesn't hang, very occasionally it will give me some odd error message like "PIT mapping not found" or "cannot open COM port". I've tried so many of the things I've tried in the past that have worked: changing USB ports, rebooting the computer between attempts, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, going into download mode with the SD-card and battery out and in, loading Odin after or before putting the phone into download mode, trying on different computers with different versions of Windows (I even tried one Mac with iOS 10.4 and a Linux notebook with Ubuntu), trying different USB cables, flashing with the battery and SD card out, trying to flash different files (besides the original modem.bin which stalled), running Odin as administrator, yadda, yadda, yadda...on and on, for days. I even just went out and bought a high-performance, super-short USB cable (6-inches) and a USB 3.0 PCI card so I'd have dedicated USB. Nada.
Basically my phone seems to have a broken download mode with potentially wonky USB (Samsung USB has never been good). I've been seeing if I can get Heimdall to work, though there is a bit of a learning curve with that program, no matter how easy people say it is. I've never even tried flashing it with it yet since I haven't gotten together all of the apparently necessary files. I also just found One-Click Unbrick, and while I was excited originally, it seems that the same outcome is the result. No matter what I do to get everything just right to be able to succeed, it fails. Java is installed, Heimdall is apparently installed, and the One-Click Unbrick drivers have been installed every time I've tried to run it. Nada again.
If my phone is able to get into download mode, yet that seems to be borked, what is my recourse? I'm at the end of my rope...*sinks into a depressed lump on the floor*.
ANY assistance would be immensely appreciated. Thank you all in advance. I'm not incredibly hopeful at this point, but I am (fortunately or unfortunately) still tenacious as hell. :-/

I thank you much for your suggestion. I've tried flashing the EC05 modem tar and both the tar.md5 and the straight tar file of the stock EL ROM, though surprisingly I haven't tried the straight EL30 modem tar yet. I'll try when I get home. The main problem is not getting Odin to COM, but getting it to flash anything. It either stalls, fails, or doesn't see the phone...download mode seems to be basically useless.

It is possible you have some crap in your phone's port. Or even the new cable is flaky. Get a bright light and magnifying glass and look in your phone's port. Also try fresh downloads of the files.

I'l check the USB/charging port when I get home from work. Most of the files I've used, including the various versions of Odin, came from my synched Dropbox folder. I'm wondering now if Dropbox synches files accurately. I'll try redownloading every file I use to flash to see if it has a beneficial effect. Thanks for the suggestion.
hope this helps

Let me find you some reliable files
Odin 1.85
Stock El30
Windows 32 bit and 64bit drivers
This should be enough to get you on your way. Oh and if you can at all possible reinstall windows prior to loading these drivers. i know someone who had to do it before their computer would recognize their phone. I've been in this kind of situation i had someone root my phone and is computer was fubar'd and it took him 3 days to unbrick my phone. This is what helped him he kept recieving unknown device. This is what helped is what helped him id advice the same. Once you have windows reinstalled download the three things and install the drivers and give it a shot.

Thank you so much for the time. I'll see about reinstalling Windows, though since it's not my computer I'm not too sure how that will go...hehe. I may be able to restore from the backup partition if he doesn't have a CD.
well you can do it over a virtual machine but unsure how to do this and if this will work entirely it might it might not im not too fluent with virtual machines.. but it simulates a working computer so id imagine you can install drivers and see if it will then recognize your phone.

So interesting that you mention running a virtual machine, as since I can't reinstall Windows Vista on this system, I was considering partitioning the hard drive and installing a version of Linux, then running WINE under that.
Lol try that... or windows i think windows might be your best bet...

I FIXED IT! My phone which has been dead for 5 days lives again! Resurrected!
I thank you all for your time and assistance. It was very deeply appreciated.
I fixed it by circumventing Winblows entirely. I created a second partition on my friend's hard drive, installed Ubuntu Linux 11.10, then went through the pretty simple process of setting up Android SDK/ADB and Heimdall, and all of the dependencies that they required. The ridiculous thing is that I fixed it without even trying. I was simply seeing if Heimdall could detect my phone (which I had connected and in DL mode), which I noticed that it did. I had no idea what Download PIT did, so I pressed it, and lo and behold, it did something amazing, and rebooted my phone. I am elated, exhausted, triumphant!
WHOOT!!!
I kNEW I would figure it out. I always do...lol.
In messing up my phone so many times, I have gotten VERY good at fixing whatever nonsense happens to arise.
Thanks again all.
Tydyn.
EDIT: I meant PRINT PIT, not Download PIT. ;-)
YAY!

My housemate is running 10.04, so I'm familiar with how it looks. If it makes ya feel any better 11.10 doesn't like my new usb wireless network adapter (Netgear N900 Dual Band), which is MUCH better than the one to which I had to revert to get internet access, though I'm hoping that I can get it working somehow soon.

I had alot of trouble even getting internet to comply... i finally got it to speed up using wifi and even that was a pain in the arse luckily other people had my same issue and had a resolution for it. I know you have to have the drivers for said wireless adapter installed for it to work correctly otherwise its not going to work

USB Port problems when rooted..how to unroot without USB port

Hello, so im a relative noob in the forums per say, by my post count, bt ive been stalking the xda forums since my HTC Touch Pro 2..Usually, with enough searching i can fix my problems on my own, bt I can't afford to break this fone..
Here is the story. (sry if im giving TMI) (THE ACTUAL QUESTION IS AT THE END. RELATIVE INFORMATION IS AS FOLLOWS)
I was content with my stock EL29 rom,bt I wanted to try the new ICS update. So, I manually updated to FF18 using this link:
http://android.clients.google.com/p...bbe3997e3067.SPH-D710_update_EL29_to_FF18.zip
I used QBKing's video's steps to update. Big shout out to him, btw.. So after i wanted to root to eventually flash a custom rom. So i rooted using sfhub's one click for FF18 :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
Now, i few days of reading later, i decided to install the recovery to start installing custom roms. However, my fone got a bit wet a few days ago from a thunderstorm video recording adventure and I couldnt install the recovery.
I plugged in my fone and it wasnt recognized by any of my three computers at home. I uninstalled and re installed the samsung drivers numerous times. Keep in mind that I had previously used sfhub's one click sucessfully, so it is unlikely to be a computer problem.
So a few days later my fone starts telling me that im charging it (or its overvoltage) when its nt even plugged in. Now, it wont even turn off. it restarts as soon as it turns off.
-------------
So basically, I have come to the conclusion that I have a hardware usb port phone problem. Now, since its rooted, just with a stock FF18 rom, will Sprint give me problems if its an obvious hardware problems?
Is there a way to unroot without plugging it into my computer? Im thinking mobile ODIN,bt i heard it cant flash modems? would that be a problem if im from a rooted FF18 going to EL29? Or shud I just go back to stock unrooted FF18?Or shud I just take it to Sprint and hope they dont check the phone software wise?
I wud appreciate multiple opinions or even confirmations of other ppls ideas. Bt thanks for reading all this.. Hope I didnt put u guys to sleep
Thanks for all the help in advance guys...u guys rock..

Now, I haven't had this problem, but on my old moment, what I did was flash it back to an old version of Stock (say EL29 [on this phone use MobileODIN]), then try to apply the OTA update, or even download the OTA update files and place them on your SD card and try that way. Then you phone would look stock when you take it in, just make sure have a battery as full as possible.
thanks for the suggestion. I ended up bringing it to Sprint and as soon as I left my car, the power button stopped working for some reason.
They ended up focusing on that and ordered me a replacement phone. I guess since it was still on the stock rom, they didnt realize it was rooted.
