[Q] Bluetooth and App Space - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Had my Desire now for getting on for a year now, fantastic phone.
Two things starting to irk me though, wonder if you kind folks could supply your usual brand of superb comment and advice
Bluetooth
Is this phone really bad at bluetooth or am I just having bad luck choosing bluetooth devices?
Jabra Halo (binaural headset) - Great for music, but cuts out all the time depending on where the phone and the headset are - i.e. if it's in my jacket pocket less than 1 meter away from the headset, and i turn my head in one direction it can cut the music out!). When using it for calls people keep telling me there's loads of interference.
Samsung WEP570 (monaural headset) - Chops in and out of connection regularly, some times (far too often) get a very bizarre pulsing audio problem, some times the phone says its connected but won't send the audio to the headset.
Sony Ericsson Watch - Basically unusable (a lot of the problem with this is probably down to the watch but given the issues with headsets it's made me wonder if i'm blaming the watch for too much...)
Any general recommendations on bluetooth for the desire?
Second issue: Free space
This one is driving me mad. I seem to spend all my time uninstalling more than one app to put one new one on. I did a quick sum of my installed apps last night and it came to about 45mb. Free space? 14mb. I thought the phone had about 130mb of space for apps? Is it leaking somewhere? Contacts isn't using much space (I think it was < 1mb), which seems to be somewhere that people often find is using tons of space.
I've cleaned out K9's email stores multiple times. I've cleaned the various cache's, and of that 45mb of apps, some of them are actually on the sd card and not on the internal store anyway.
I'm running HTC Desire, Orange stock, Froyo.
I'd love to trash it and upgrade to cyanogen or something but the lack of a stock Orange RUU to revert back to if necessary does put me off somewhat...
I used to suffer from ORD when I had my old Touch HD, it's been painful avoiding the temptation for the last year or so on this one but the desire (heh) to run app2sd and get 1gb of disk for installing apps is getting a bit too much to resist
Any thoughts, comments, suggestions and advice much appreciated!
Matt.

Car kit and GPS advice

Hi all,
Ok, ive had this XDA2s for a while now and think its about time I put the thing to some use!
I spend a lot of time driving and gave up using a bluetooth headset some time ago because of the sheer bloody uselessness of the thing
So... while I have been driving, I have been using a Garmin Navtalk (a mobile phone with built in satnav). This has been fine, except for the constant uploading of maps and switching of the sim card.
Im sure that some of you have successfully got this thing working in a car with hands free operation and utilising GPS.
Can anyone suggest what widgets (including some sort of mount) I should buy to achieve hands free and GPS nirvana?
I dont care if its bluetooth, wired, subspace or telepathic ANYTHING!!
I would really appreciate any advice.
Cheers
J

I have a Parrot Bluetooth CK3000, and have had no problems. You can even update the firmware easily enough via a laptop.

Quality of Blue Angel Bluetooth Audio - Definitive Answer?

Hi all,
I bought my SX66 from Cingular two weeks ago and so far I LOVE IT. Bluetooth, WIFI, PDA, phone, and a QWERTY keyboard all in one slick package.
However, as you all know, the bluetooth audio has MAJOR issues. I have upgraded my radio to 1.13.00 and my bluetooth stack to 3900. The volume level of my bluetooth headset has improved, but one thing remains - the HORRIBLE snap, crackle and pop (noticeable on both ends of the phone call).
Because the radio ROM and bluetooth stack updates have not helped, I am beginning to fear that the problem is a hardware design flaw. However, I'm hoping that some bluetooth headsets may compensate for this better than others.
I have read through all the forums but have yet to come accross a consensus for the best bluetooth headset (the one that has the least crackle and pop interference).
So here's the question - has ANYONE used a bluetooth headset with the Blue Angel that does NOT suffer from the audio problems described above? I would love to settle this once and for all.
I hate to have to spend money on a new bluetooth headset when my Motorola HS820 has worked fine in the past with other phones. However, it would be even more of a shame to turn my SX66 into a glorified $500 PDA and go back to using my Motorola V600 for phone calls.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Also - I am a new member of the XDA Developers forums and I want to say that they have been INVALUABLE to me. The SX66 users manual from Siemens is nothing more than an overview of the Pocket PC 2003 OS. These forums (and the wiki pages) tell me how the SX66 REALLY works.
Cheers,
Warwick
Bad news. I tried with 4 diferents blouthoot head set with the same problems (including the new jabra BT800). I use a cable headset and if I need my hands free I use my Sony Ericson phone.
So from now their is no good option to solve this problem.
FYI - I sent the following e-mail to Siemens customer support, just to see what they'd say:
"I recently bought an SX66 Pocket PC Phone from Cingular.
Everything works great, with one exception - the audio quality on my
bluetooth headset is TERRIBLE. Specifically, there is non-stap crackling
and popping. According to a web site devoted to SX66-like devices
(www.xda-developers.com) there is no known fix for this issue, and it is
a problem with the bluetooth antenna itself. Is this true? If so, the
product is defective and I will be returning it to Cingular for a full
refund. While it is a great device, it is useless to me if I can't use a
wireless headset to talk on the phone. P.S. I have already installed the
latest driver updates on the Siemens Web site."
Their response:
"Dear Mr. Webb,
Thank you for contacting Siemens Customer Care. I would like to thank you
for your trust and support by inquiring about the SX66. I will be glad to
assist you.
I understand that you are having problems with static while using a
Bluetooth headset.
Please understand that there are no settings on the phone that will improve
the function on the Bluetooth on the phone. It either works or it doesn't.
I would recommend trying to pair up another headset to see if the problem is
with the headset or the phone. If another headset gives you the same
problem the phone may be defective. Before taking it in for repair, you
will want to first try a hard reset on the phone. A full device reset
clears memory, deletes all data and restores the SX66 to its default
settings. Programs installed at the factory remain, erasing all data that
you have created and programs you have installed. To full reset the SX66,
press and hold the power button, and then use the stylus to press the soft
reset button at the same time.
**NOTE** Be sure you have backed up all your data in a SD card or on your PC
before performing a full reset!
If this does not resolve your issue and your phone is less than a year old,
then it can be repaired by Cingular. Please take your SX66 to your local
Cingular store for a warranty exchange or repair.
I hope this has brought resolution to your issue and that I was able to be
of assistance. Your case number is XXXXX. If you need further assistance,
please reply to this e-mail. If you reply, please ensure that your reply
contains a copy of this e-mail.
You can visit us on the web at http://www.siemens-wireless.com. We also have
our Customer Care Hotline available Monday through Saturday from 8AM until
7PM Central Time at 888-777-0211.
Thank you for choosing Siemens; have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Siemens Customer Support
"
It either works or it doesn't. GREEEEAAAAAT.
My HS810 set has worked great with limitations. The phone has to be in close proximity to the headset. I have static issues when I have the phone hooked to my belt and am walking briskly. But as far as using the headset in my car with the phone sitting on the passenger seat it is great. I bought a secong set of HS810's and had the same good results.
HBH-300
I'm using the HBH-300 with very little static. The headset has noise-cancellation features which seems to help a lot... according to the folks on the other end of the conversation. Like the previous poster, the SX66 has to be in line of sight to the headset, otherwise I experience static. So for instance, if I carry the PDA in my left hand w/ headset in right ear, I need to make sure my body doesn't block the "line of sight". When the SX66 is on the desk, I have no problems, again as long as I don't block the line of sight.
Shouldn't be this way, but it solves most my problems.... I'm using Radio 1.13 and still 1.40.

What should I get? Any advice?

Ello,
I currently have an XDA IIs (Blue Angel). When I picked it up, it was beautiful. But now, it's starting to irritate me.
1. The whistling screen is louder than ever and it's driving me insane!
2.1 After updating to the newest official O2 ROM, the general speed of the machine is terrible! It crashes all the time (especially using TomTom).
2.2 After updating, I can no longer watch videos off my SD card without them jumping about, playing audio static every other second, of simply not accepting it at all!
So, I'm thinking of getting a new XDA - but which one??
This is what I use my XDA IIs for:
> TomTom Navigator 5 - I use this every day (when it works).
> Playing videos - 99% of the time of my 1GB SD card.
> E-mail
> Internet - lots of browsing and data transfers - - I try to use wi-fi whenever possible.
-I'm told that if I use 3G, then data charges won't be quite so massive, but I can't find any evidence of this.
> I'd love to get Skype working, but so far I've been unsuccessful.
I'd also love to get video calling going, but I read that O2 are going to start charging at rather high prices and not taking it out of the inclusive minutes - ergh.
+Plus, a usable camera would be nice.
What are your experiences? Any advice?
ANY help here would be very much appreciated!
Big thanks in advance!
-b
If you want video calling and want to stick with O2 then you'll need the XDA Pro. (O2's version of the HTC Universal)
Don't know about O2's charges but GPRS and 3G data with Orange cost the same. £1 per MB on the tarrif I'm on. 3G is just faster and would probably cost more because you're likely to use it more because of the usable speed.
I use tomtom every day on my Xdaiis with the latest official O2 ROM and it never crashes. Are you using it in corporate mode? Also considering your issue with videos too, I'd wonder if it's your SD card that is at fault rather than your device. Perhaps it might be worthwhile backing up everything on the card, formatting it and then putting everything back on. If possible try another SD card altogether.
however none of this will fix your whistling screen, or quell your desire to upgrade.
On O2 the universal is the xda exec, on t-mobile it's the mda pro and on Orange it's the SPV m5000, you might want to take a look at those, t-mobile do good data packages withj their walk & web tariffs, but it's t-mobile, Orange have the best 3g coverage but screw the device up a bit with their crappy homescreen software, O2 have the better looking device, with least modifications if you turn off O2 active, but their 3g coverage is not too impressive.
Nice one, peeps.
I thought the O2 Exec was the universal?
Any more for any more?

[Q] Calling sound quality problem

Hi everybody
I'm suffering from a sound problem while making calls. Sound in call got buzzes sometimes, seems periodically, means that i can guest when it is muted completely (about 0.5s duration) or when it's like strong wind sound beating at the opposite line's micro. I tested this with a waiting piece of music from a friend (his provider offer a waiting song when people are waiting to get connect to him) and the song got buzzes and muted at exact points.
It's not caused by ROMs, as i change rom almost everyweek and the issue remains constantly.
I did some testing methods relating to sim:
- Put my sim in other handset, sound is good.
- Put other sim in my DHD, sound is bad but with other buzz and muted circles
- Put other provider's sims in my DHD, same stories
So i guess it's not because of sim-card.
I've had this problem for a while, and decide to ask here because i cannot find out a proper solution. My phone has the latest radio.
After clarifying and asking some of my friends, i found this problem is not speaker-related (which i fear the most) but mobile signal-related. The symptom is getting better or worse when i "touch" the two prongs next to the simcard, under the bottom hood. They are the antenna of this phone, right? I tried to raise them a little bit, or lower them a little bit (of course very small changes because these components are tiny and seems fragile) because i heard somebody in XDA told so to improve signal strength or something like that. But the issue only changed (better or worse, hardly to realize), it didn't disappear.
So anyone can give me a suggestion on this case? What do i suppose to do to make call quality better? Because it is annoying really! Have ever imagine a high-end device would provide such a poor service for a basic purpose like this. I often lose information or important points during conversations because of this f***ing issue! Not good at all!
Thanks in advance.
Hello everyone? Anyone can help?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
i had this problem before. Its the hardware. Brought it to HTC 3 times before they exchanged a new set for me
Really? Sounds very badly! Is there any other way to repair, because my handset is rooted and not bought officially from HTC agents so it's a pain to contact with HTC, especially when they appear to be not really helpful like in your case @topucash
well, you can always flash a RUU or restore from your backup of the stock rom. I actually had to request for a 1 to 1 exchange , else i expect myself to visit them forever
Can not really follow you. What did you mean by "else i expect myself to visit them forever"?
And what did HTC tell you about this issue? Did they call them "hardware problem" or something?
Any one can help me please, i'm dying of suffering from this awful issue

An evil storage elf that eats music and pictures

I have a one and a half year old LG G3. Since warranty covers for two years, I decided not to break it by rooting it or whatever. I'll do that in six months.
The phone has served me well for the most part, and I did my best to keep it malware free. I only installed apks from Google Play store (with exception of installing eduroam apk need for my colleges wifi to work - which was from a safe source, of course). However, lately, strange things started to occur. I thought I was going crazy at first - there were pictures that I took, that I knew that I took, that just aren't on the phone anymore.
Finally, the obvious answer has come to me - the devious storage elf must have took them for himself.
Also, the little bastard has been crippling my music collection. And in most devious way imaginable. Instead of deleting the whole albums, it left an average of first 6 songs in each folder. Some albums went from 20 to 3 songs, while others managed to end up unscathed.
I have to note that I do have a SD card in my phone (a 32GB, for collective device storage of 64GB), about as old as my phone. I also believe that all the missing data has gone missing from the said card. But I'm not sure. Some pictures might have been in the phone memory. Never thought I'd have to keep track of it.
My first though was that my SD card failed, but seriously, what the hell. How does a card fail and not only delete only some files (okay, that is entirely feasible), but delete all but the first six song in each album (and we are talking over 30 albums here, so it's not a statistical oddity). The other culprit could be the phone (which I totally wouldn't mind if the warranty could get me a new one). But it's an LG, it's a good brand.
Which leaves us with the obvious choice, which is the evil storage elf that eats music and pictures. I don't know what I did to wrong him, but reasoning with him did not help. I need a method of disposing of the tiny twat. I considered shooting him, but that might damage my phone. Do these elfs like analog data as much as digital? I thought I might leave some physical pictures near my phone and squash the beast when it pokes it's ugly head out. Or should I do poison? How do you poison a picture? Should I download some pictures of Donald Trump to my phone? Or would that outright break my phone (crack the screen)?
P.S. In all seriousness, my phone is malfunctioning exactly the way I described, if you leave out the mystical creatures. Files are going missing (again, I'm not sure if it was in a single batch or gradually), and are doing so in some weird fashion. Most of my albums only have the first six song left, others just gone (I checked with file explorer, they are not gone from cache, but gone gone). Honestly, the best thing I could hear is that I could get my device replaced with a new one, but I doubt it's going to happen. Something went wrong, and it might again, so I'd really like to identify what it was and fix it to make sure it doesn't happen again. Also I'm sorry if the elf story wasn't amusing to you.

Are you running any app like Link2SD or similar?
You may test with another SDcard and check the behaviour it takes. Also I recommend re-formatting your SD.
I'm not running any apps that manipulate storage.
I could test it with another card, but since I can't force the error to happen or not happen (e.g. recreate the exact conditions, I don't know what triggered this) I can never be sure or do any reliable tests. I would have to stick in (a considerably smaller) card and just wait for it to fail or not fail. For how long would I have to wait to confirm it's the card?
But I really doubt it's an SD card failure since the deleted songs were all on the same range (e.g. from seven to twelve), and never at the start of the album. I'd expect more erratic behavior if the card had failed (random stuff deleted, or card not working at all). This seems too neat to be an error at a hardware level. Especially when you consider the fact that I copied all that data on one go some time before on a blank card - all of the data was probably physically adjacent on the chip making this kind of failure even more unlikely.
