[Q] extract memos from previous nandroid backup - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Here is my situation:
Created a backup in feb before I upgraded to EB13. The upgrade bricked my phone, so I wiped and restored, after the restore the phone was running very poorly so I just backup up my contacts and did a fresh wipe and started from scratch.
Now I'm on EC05 with SyndicateRom (awesome btw, ACS guys are amazing) but I've realized I saved a few memos on that Feb backup that I need to retrieve (car maintenance info)
I've searched around on how to extract the data.img and system.img from my nandroid backup and have been successful on the system.img. I'm not exactly sure where the memos are stored so thats what lands me here.
I've done searching on specific file locations within the backup and to no prevail, so I was hoping someone would either already know how I could retrieve those specific memos from the feb backup that was running on the stock firmware (Not EB13, i believe DK28?) I attempted to install the memo.apk from the backup once I extracted it but it wouldn't install on the device.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
BTW I'm on windows 7 x64 I'm not sure if that makes a difference but everything I'm running is through the windows terminal, no linux

If I understand your question correctly, I think you're asking where memo.apk stores memos (it was long winded sorry lol)..
They *should* be stored somewhere in /data/data...in there you would have to look for a subdirectory referencing memo.apk or the like...
Butttt...if your asking HOW to restore specific things from a nandroid back up...there's an android developers article written by google on how to do that. I *think* the way I found the page was by googling "adb nandroid restore" or something like that...the point being, that in order to install specific data from a nandroid backup (and not just all /data or all /system) you'll need to use adb to push it over, and a specific program in order to read the nandroid backup file..but I know its all detailed in the page, its just a matter of finding that page lol...hope that helps.
And btw, please post questions in q&a forum

Thanks..i guess that was a long winded story, sorry I shouldve gotten to the point.
All I want to do is be able to view the memos I stored from memo.apk
I don't care if I have to view them on the phone and push the app to the phone like you mentioned or if I can view that data on my pc. I would rather just view it on my pc.
when I extracted the system.img file there was no data/data folder. If I try to extract the data.img file then I get a popup that unyaffs has stopped responded and it closes on my pc.

Ooo well there you go.../data/data is more than likely in the data.img...will any disc image reader successfully open nandroid .img's? (sorry im not familiar with unyaffs).. I know theres free ones that can extract things too, maybe try that...

Actlly, do that google search I mentioned earlier and try to find that page about using adb to push specific sets of data..
I say this because in it, it tells you what to use to view the data.img contents
Id do it myself but I'm out and about. Keep me posted, if you can't find it ill look when I get home in an hour or two

thanks squshy. I did some more googling and came across a program called linux reader that will read ext2/3/4 linux files. I was able to preview the data.img in a screen, show it in windows ansi text, copy and paste to word and then find the words I was looking for in the memos and done and done.
Thanks again.

[APP] Softbankメール(mail) v1.5

Hi,
Since the release of the latest application (v1.6) a lot of users have been upset about the horrible downgrade in software.
It seems that Softbank has still not hired any native English speakers.....
Anyway I'm not here to rant I'll just post the files for v1.5 since a lot of people were asking where they could find a copy for themselves.
I pulled both of these files out of a backup I stored onto my SD card using MyBackupPro. Not sure what the zip file is for, but the APK is there. Maybe somebody could clear that up for me as well.
Zip file
APK
As far as I know there is two ways to get this installed (there may be many other ways).
1. adb push the apk or
2. download MyBackup and do a quick backup of some apps you have installed already. download both of these files and paste them into the directory where MyBackup stores the backups for apps. run MyBackup and choose to restore the Softbank Mail app.
cheers.

Hi, after reading your post I discovered my version of SoftBank Mail is 1.0 but I've never received an update notification - probably because I'm not in Japan.
EDIT: Apparently it's because the version you've uploaded is designed for non-Japanese models and it's incompatible with mine.
I tried simply downloading the app and running a standard installation - it did install, but when I tried to launch it, I got a notification that it cannot be used on my device (Galapagos 005SH).
EDIT: The MyBackup method does not work because simply adding the files in the directory where the backed up APKs are doesn't automatically lead to the new APK(s) showing up in the list of available apps to restore - it's because the information is also written to a dedicated file (MBP extension I think it was). Perhaps that can be edited but...

Galaxy Nexus & Titanium Bacnk

May seem like a silly question, but I've been a loyal titanium backup user for years. I just got my GN and am trying to get it to be a licensed version that I got that I've been using with my .txt file. However, even though I put it in the root of my SDCARD using root explorer, TB still thinks it's in free version mode. I'm sure you've figured it out, but for the life of me, I can't. Thanks in advance.

I just did the same thing last night. I didn't have any problems getting the license .txt file to work. But, you need to go into manage apps and clear the data for titanium backup if you opened it already without the license file being there.
The file was just improperly named. Your post jogged my memory of this problem I had before. Thanks for the help.
Have any of you tried to "protect" a backup with TB on your GN? I'm getting an error message.
Apps will backup, but just can't get protected.
I sent an email to the developer. He said that there is no ability to protect files on the internal "sdcard" but they're looking for a work around.

Whatsapp doesnt restore Backups

atm im jumping between different roms while waiting for next cm release. i also use whatsapp. everywhere on the net its is said that WA is supposed to ask me to restore previously made backups. BUT IT NEVER DID!
does anyone know how to restore those backups? or better: whats the problem with ace/WA? i have tons of backups, but could never use them-.-
things i already did:
- install, then add backup
- put backup into sd, then install
- searched here and found a tool that was supposed to show the chats in browser (and it failed hard (XD), what doesnt matters, cuz it doesnt solve the problem)
these chatts dont contain highly important information, but it would be very nice to have them back
thanks in advance
hmm me use whatsapp too.. as long as i remember... i never make backups.. but after switching roms.. it always ask me to restore from backup or not.. dunno either..
there is a possibility to manually make backups of WA chats. i saved the folder, flashed, put the folder back, installed: nothing happened

i switch roms often too. and whatsapp.. well it does ask me to restore from the backup..
u could try an alternative - use titanium backup to backup the application+data.
that way when u restore from titanium, u will have ur messages back.
i dont need titanium for that. the files it rstores the chats with are at /data/data/com.whatsapp
i had an old nandroid backup (stock rom), extracted those files, copied them in their place (see above) and it "worked". i dont get asked to restore, but the chats are "just there". and you cant tell me this is normal. this is only possible if you are rooted. afaik no stock rom is usually rooted
but even the official wa help states, that ONLY the folder on SD card has to be copied to new device/new rom and it should work. WhyTF it doesnt do it for me?
€: sry fogot that: the nand-BU is old as hell. the chats i want to restore are from a rom already deleted/overwritten so restoring via titanium would be a bit hard (cuz theres no backup of that rom. there was no reason for that)
Can someone where the backup works, can tell me if you have a ".crypt" file or not?
seems that "my" WA cant read its own encrypted DBs -.-
it worked when transforming the crypted DB into an unencrypted DB
Hi
I've just encountered this problem too, lost all my messages of over 2 years! I too have ".crypt" file but it doesn't ask me to restore it. Did you find a solution? Please say yes!!
thanks

more or less....
WA still didnt accept its own files but try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583021
worked well and i have all my conversations back.
hope i could help
Saw that, and yes it works well. Obviously better than nothing, but not the same as getting them back in the phone. I've opened a support issue with WhatsApp, maybe a future release can resolve this.
cheers!
if you encrypt them with the tool, WA will restore them and you will have youre stuff "back in the phone"
if you get a response from official wa, please share =)

You mean, if you decrypt the database file with the tool Whatsapp Xtract. Yes, that should work.
[TOOL] Whatsapp Backup Messages Extractor
Decrypt, then copy the decrypted file (msgstore.db instead of msgstore.db.crypt) onto the folder /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases, make sure it's the only database file inside that folder and then newly install WhatsApp. It should ask you to import the backup during the process of installation.
Thanks you ztedd, that makes more sense! Are you saying that only decrypted files get restored? That's not the impression the WhatsApp website gave me.

Whatsapp now detects a Backup, but when i hit "yes" to restore it, not a single chat gets restored. :/ Any suggestions?
I copied the file msgstore.db.html from the tool to the database directory and the delete the ".html" ending.
*WORKS: Copy the msgstore.plain.db file an rename it to msgstore.db, then it works!
Thanks!
Hi
i too have experienced lots of problems restoring my old chat from my old phone. I followed your advice below and it worked.
However, I have now lost my new messages that were on my new phone. How do I restore them too?
Please help...I'm totally clueless....Thanks

@topic: ztedd postet in his thread a solution to merge 2 databases. i havent tried it myself yet (was posted a few days ago. (well. earlierer, but it had some...problems)) but it looks promising
Apologises if I am incorrectly posting on this forum but as my username suggests I am totally clueless to how this process works.
I do not not how to ask a question in the thread Q&A as suggested and by replying did not realise that I had posted a new thread.
Please forgive me.
Please advice how to correctly use this forum and how do I merge databases on two samsung phones or generally, after having successfully restored my old chat history following your advice, how do I add/merge the new chat on my new phone to the old chat that now appears to have replaced my new chat history.
Thanking you in advance for your help.

Help with SDcard0/emulated/etc...

I know this has been asked numerous times in alot of different threads but I was hoping by starting this someone would be kind enough to elaborate and explain exactly what is needed and what is not. I know I should have plenty of storage on my phone but it seems I dont. I have 2.23 GB left and I know I should have more. If anyone is willing to explain more in detail it would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I am currently using Rootbox and it has been the only rom I've used since rooting my phone.

Bump. I'm having a bunch of issues with this. I went from stock rooted to AOKP, and now TWRP won't recognize my backup so that I can go back to stock. It's really annoying. I'm not having any luck with any partition I copy the backup to. Does anyone know of a way to restore stock factory partitioning? Even doing an LGNPST of ZV9 and then taking the OTA doesn't fix the partitioning. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas.
Use a root file browser your stock storage is in mnt/shell/emulated so once your in that Ares look for your twrp folder copy the backups inside it then paste then into the twrp in sdcard0 ..... to sum up you haven't lost anything these cm/aosp ROMs create a new storage (sdcard0) so just take anything you normal store in your stock storage which is now mnt/shell/emulated and place it in sdcard0 or redirect apps looking for files to look in those places
I'm not sure about deleting those files in the stock storage though unless you have no intention in returning to stock cause if you delete them then return to stock they will be missing and vice versa

You likely still have the old "sd card" from a previous stock install. Use a root file explorer, like ES File Explorer, and navigate back to the root directory. You will likely have a directory called "mnt". Navigate to that folder and open the "sdcard" folder. You'll find whatever you used to have on your sd card from previous installs. I would save whatever you want to your new sd card directory and delete the entire mnt/sdcard directory. It might not allow everything to be deleted, but it should fee up that space you're missing.
*Note: The old files could be under mnt/emulated or some such directory, I dont remember. Just look around that folder to find those old files.
Hope that helps!
I'm having the same issue with this folder. I see that it is mirrored because i added a file in the sdcard0 folder it showed up in the sdcard folder. But i also found the same folders in the mnt folder. So are they all mirrored files or are they actually taking up space? Is there a way to format the space? Will the rom still boot up? Also, had that 0 folder on my sdcard, but am not able to delete it just rename the folder.
I'm running nexOGen 1.6 if it makes a difference. Hope someone can help.
thanks!

If your phone is STOCK or STOCK rooted and you want a fast and sure fix then
simply copy the contents of your internal sdcard to a new folder on the desktop of
your computer and use a backup app to backup your apps to external sdcard.
If you don't have an external sdcard then copy all files and folders internal sdcard
and copy the backed up apps to a new folder in your computer's desktop.
Then go into the settings>accounts in the phone and perform "factory data reset".
Doing that will solve the audio problem you have been experiencing.
If you are using a custom rom then I would suggest to ODIN flash the stock firmware
but make sure that the firmware is the correct onf for your specific phone's model number.
Best place to get the correct stock firmware is from SamMobile.com.
Good luck!
Hey thank you. Ive never done any restoring before. I just installed Helium on my desktop. Is there any way for me to be 100 percent certain that all my info will save properly? Im scared that I will lose all data trying to do a backup. Also, will doing a system restore fix the keyboard issue I am having? Heres what it does; word suggestions in the top area of keyboard will contain the correct word, but also contains the word before the correct word. Not sure if that makes any sense.

If you go into settings>accounts - and have it backup it will back up all your contacts,
mms, data, and other personal information and send it to your google/gmail account.
Then if and when you need to restore those items you can go into settings> accounts and
click on "Restore Data" after you are sure that you have a good wifi or data connection.
As far as music/videos/documents/photos you will not loose anything either since the
process of flashing a rom does not touch any of those files or folders in your phone.
It's a lot easier to flash a clean stock rom than it is hunting down trying to find a fix for
all these issues you are having with your phone.
When you do backups using apps from the playstore you will have no problem restoring
them after you re-download and install them again from the playstore.
Just be sure that the destination of any backups you make using playstore apps is setup
to be on your external sdcard or copy them to your computers desktop into a new folder.
These backups above are only for games and applications which you installed from the
playstore and has nothing to do with the personal DATA backups using your gmail account.
Good luck!
Don't forget that it takes less time to click the "THANKS" button than it takes to type "thank you"
Hey thank you for the help. Oh, btw, im running stock. I would hit the "like" button, but um, shoot, I cant find it. I know, I must be an idiot. Lol
