[Q] Gallery Sensor Usage Syndicate Frozen 1.1.0 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting poor battery life with Syndicate Frozen because of the Gallery battery bug. I did a lot of searching and read a lot about it, but I can't seem to find any fixes. Is there any way to work around this except rebooting every time you use the gallery? If I forget to do it my battery gets drained super fast.

Why not just delete the gallery app and use quickpic or another one from the android market. That's what I do. I love quickpic.

I do the same and agree. Haven't looked back since.

So to delete the stock gallery, I can just go into Titanium Backup, select gallery and delete?
If I ever have to flash back to stock, will the gallery still be deleted?

If you flash with Odin, it will be there. Either use Titanium or Root Explorer to delete it. I use Gallery++.

What gallery battery bug? I even googled to no avail.

There was a bug in DK28 and EB13 (or could have been the Gallery app itself) that caused the G-sensors to go runaway even after closing the gallery process. This would drain the battery. I have not experienced this bug in EC05, but it might have to do with the fact that Mammon uses a modified Gallery App in Bonsai.
The Gallery uses the G-sensors for the tilt effect, but should not continue to do so after the app is closed. You can use Spare Parts to test for it's presence.
1.- Hook your phone up to the charger briefly to clear the battery stats/history.
2.- After you unplug your phone, open the Gallery briefly then close it.
3.- Plug your charger into your phone again to clear the battery history, then unplug it.
4.- Open Spare Parts and click on "Battery history". Then click on the tab at the top that says "Other usage", then select "Sensor usage".
If you see the Gallery listed as one of the processes, then you have the bug.
As I stated earlier, I have not seen it in EC05 (at least not in Bonsai), but it can't hurt to check.
Edit: I just checked my Stock Epic and it does have this bug. My other Epic running Bonsai 4.0.1 does not.

Confirmed, the version of the Gallery used in Bonsai 4.0.0 and greater has been fixed.
So far, all other Gallery apk's I've tested have replicated this issue. Be careful installing themes that include the Gallery, as they probably have not been fixed yet.

That must be the explanation for my battery drain as well. I've uninstalled it and switched to quickpic. No regrets so far.

I prefer Quickpic myself, but if anyone not running Bonsai wanted to use the 3dGallery, they could just install Mammons version.

I like the 2d gallery better. 3d is just nonsense, IMHO.

gallery freeze

sometimes after i open my gallery my epic freezes and I have to pull the batt. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?
I'm not a big fan of the Gallery program due to a similar issue. However, mine always seems to pull out of it after a few minutes...
Haven't looked to hard for an alternative yet.
If I run across anything, i'll let you know
edit: for what it's worth, I think it takes longer in my case because it loads ever little pic out there, even stupid phone icons. Maybe your just running in to a laggy startup due to it scanning everything on the phone...
there was a lengthy discussion about the gallery app in the Bonsai thread the other day. some people were thinking the gallery was responsible for bad battery drain in that app..... people chimed in that they really liked the app QuickPic from the market, as an alternative to the stock gallery.
here is roundaout where the discussion took place:

update: wow, just downloaded QuickPic... you guys should try it, seems way faster than the stock gallery.
Nice find! Just tried out Quickpic and I'll never use the gallery again! This app is great! It even lets me exclude the folders that had a ton of crappy little icons that were causing loading/scanning to take forever.
Thanks!
Now I wonder if I can kill the gallery app and delete it...at the very least I'm sure I could have it killed at startup

yeah no prob., it's pretty awesome! i have the gallery frozen with Titanium Backup for now.... will probably just uninstall if all goes well,
Put a file named .nomedia in folders you want media scanner to exclude. I put it in my clockwork backup directory, and a few other ones to speed media scaner.
It might help keep the gallery from freezing if there isn't so much stuff in it

Does anyone else have gallery issues on CM7?

It's getting more and more common. I'll be in my gallery and I'll look at my thumbnails. I'll click on a random picture of whatever... and that picture doesn't open, a completely random picture will open. Half the time it's something I deleted weeks earlier.
I have never had that problem, but I would recommend downloading QuickPic and using it for your gallery.
I've been having the issue since 6.X. It's just recently getting worse. I've done numerous FULL wipes with no restores since then too. I think it comes from a new image having the same filename as an old one that's been deleted. Renaming usually solves the problem.

I second quickPic. Its not as pretty looking, but its way more functional (much easier to limit directories as well as have "Private" directories), and fast.
third on the quickpic. greatest gallery ever
+1 for quickpick. It's a godsend!
Using QuickPic now and it's working great.
Thanks.

what apps have you removed after root?

Just wanting to start a list as to which apps/files have been been checked to see if after removing won't mess up the phone. I want to debloat this as much as possible
I've removed all at&t apps except smart wifi
removed Polaris office, live wallpapers, Facebook, city ID
want to remove YP but it says LG YP and looks like there is some link to it from the contact book that may break, if someone has already done that please post.
Not going to touch any Google apps yet since looks like some are getting security errors on reboot
what else have you guys deleted and haven't had any issues
has anyone deleted that other setting app for tabbed view... May just disable it since I don't really need two next to each other

You have to root it and then use titanium backup to remove or freeze apps.
Better to freeze them first to make sure you don't delete something that will cause issues later.
Hope this helps.

Installed the update from AT&T, then applied this root. Works great, no problems.
Going to go start freezing some of the bloat...

Not a good idea at all until we have usable recovery. As linked above, some of the apps are intertwined tightly within the lg security and you will lock down your phone if you remove the wrong app. The linked poster removed Google Movies and that borked his phone.
Freezing is fine for me for now. It is not as if the bloat is causing lag, this phone is fast.
The security issue seems to be happening if Google apps were tampered. I've removed every AT&T app except myAT&T along with the Browser and Email app and even the EasySettings, and haven't gotten the security screen.
I removed most of the ATT Apps. Also got rid of LG YP. All it did was make it so the yp link in contacts doesn't work. Just an error message, no force closing.
Also added 4.2 keyboard and camera as well as SVoice. Replaced LGs weird browser with stock ICS. Loving this thing so far.
I've frozen everything with AT&T and YP in it, so far no problems. I'm also using everything I restored from my SGSIII. Apex, SwiftKey X, Handcent, etc...

How'd you get the stock browser to work? This is the only piece I can't get to work. It always force closes when trying to open it.

I got an AOSP 4.0.4 browser apk, moved it to system/apps via root browser. Renamed the lg browser to browser.bup (just to keep a stock backup copy) wiped dalvik and rebooted. Permissions need to be set to rw-r-r.
Hope that helps ya.

No go, moved it to /system/app, chmod 644, deleted /data/dalvik-cache and rebooted. Still Force closes. Any chance you can share your APK? Mine is supposed to be from the GSM Galaxy Nexus but you never know...
EDIT: Nevermind, just grabbed a Browser.apk off some random CyanogenMod 9 ROM. Didn't like it moved to /system/app, but took it fine when sideloaded as a regular APK. Go figure.
Wow, Google should've kept this browser. It blows Chrome out of the water in terms of smoothness and functionality.

Did it the same way as mentioned for the browser. Could never get photo sphere working, but i like the interface of the 4.2 camera so much more.
I once had a lg nitro hd and after removing all the bloat i safely could i found that my battery life was amazing. Has anyone experienced that on this phone too?
We should make a list of what we are freezing/removing.
Also, I've been trying to get the browser trick to work all morning... no dice. I can't even get it to show up. Had my friend send me browser.apk from his AOKP rom, and just realized its Jelly Bean.... might be the problem. Haven't tried the camera trick yet..
EDIT:
Ok I got the browser working. Used CM9 rom. Its sooooo fast. I've uninstalled Firefox, and Chrome... Now on to find the camera from 4.2
Ok, I can't get the 4.2 camera working to save my life. It FCes everytime I try it. The gallery is working fine. Used the files from here:

[Q] Slow gallery

Did anyone have the slow gallery problem on Galaxy Note II? Specially when changing wallpapers using the settings. Is there any solution to it?
My gallery has suddenly gotten extremely slow too. Started yesterday. Tried clearing the gallery cache but that didn't help. I did some searching and haven't found a solution yet. If I do I'll let you know.
Very slow gallery

Mines been like it for ages, slow to the point of unusable, searched and searched but no solution at all, its really annoying now, tried differant Kernels and rom's but no luck.
Through Settings/Application Manager/All/Gallery I cleared the cache. I then used a file manager (Total Commander) to manually delete the .thumbmails directory. I also turned Facebook Gallery syncing through Settings/Accounts/Facebook.
My phone automatically rebuilt the thumbnails and after maybe half a day Gallery sped up to it' usual speed.
haven't noticed any problems on my end, seems to be as fast as day 1
John
Mine is slow as ****e as well. I assumed it was something to do with the Facebook galleries.
I use Quickpic though instead.
ETA: lbloo's solution worked for me although I had to clear data rather than just cache on mine.

I did it. Cleared cache. Cleared all files related to Gallery. But still it is very slow. Specially while changing wallpaper and picking picture from gallery. Thanks anyway
Now it appears that after doing above steps and I cannot select a picture for setting wallpapers. (Long pressing on screen and selecting wallpapers from gallery does not show any pictures, only place holders for the pictures. )
I have like 6400 photos on my SGN2 and i can't feel the slow init

I found it really slows down when using a custom rom. Redpill kernel made a difference though and speeds things up again.

but i just flash it with the official stock firmware and restore it to defaut factory settings. what am i doing wrong
After factory reset gallery speed improved. But still selecting a wallpaper from gallery by long pressing the homescreen is toooo slow.
I was also having a horrendous experience with the Gallery, the page would always jump up to the top and be extremely slow to load.
Solution: I used Titanium Backup to freeze the "AllShare Service", now it's all smooth!

This did the trick, AllShare is apparently trying to look at the photos to do something with with the "Change player" option, disable Allshare (which is useless anyway IMO as it's far too slow) and it sorts it out, gallery is MUCH faster and the multi-second hangs are totally gone.
AllshareCast keeps working which I actually _do_ use.
Hopefully Samsung will fix this in the future to make it useful, but for now, disabling AllShare with TB does the job.
I don't have this issue with my phone but I don't either keep more than 300 pics or video in my gallery. But I use to clear gallery data through sdmaid app

How high up is your Task Manager?

When looking at my battery / app usage always see the task manager app in 3 rd position using quite a bit of battery. Never see it below that spot, even when not using it (holding down home button ) sometimes the percentage is 18% and that seems high for a manager that works in the background all the time.
Once in a while I'll clean memory or hit end all to close apps but not often.
Do you find your task manager up this high on your list of apps?
Let me know.
Pp.
Forgot image.
Pp.
Mine is never in the list. I also use it every once in a while to clear everything. Try to check any third party apps and their settings to see if they can cause this, or a simple reboot may fix it if you haven't done so already
Have tried reboot, still works its way up. Greenify won't touch it, says it's a system app.
Pp.
Then I would do a clean flash and see if it still happens. Try running that with only the apps you really need for a few days and see how that goes
Did a clean flash trying to get Google back up and running, also had to factory reset, will keep an eye on it over next couple of days.

Only run stock /rooted/debloated with no mod extras, no games, I basically use it as a phone.
But after the factory reset and flashing the base stock that ShinySide has in general the Task Manager is way down on the list and at times not even there.
It could have been something was borked on my last setup.
So far sweet and running smooth, always got a full days battery with moderate use, now may get better battery life.
Pp.
Well after a day of use the Task Manager is working it's way up on the list in battery stats , maybe it's normal?
Don't know but I'm getting great battery life, so for now I'm just going to ignore it.
Running stock /rooted / NH7 with NK2 modem.

Yes, the round widget with the number apps shown inside the circle. It turns yellow, red and green. It says "Active apps" under it.
