[Q] Evo 4G running FRESH 3.5.0.1 - Theming using UOT... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive been running the latest fresh (3.5.0.1) on my EVO 4G with no problems, but i wanted to change the battery icon and possibly the notification icons. I tried using UOT (uot . dakra . lt/) to do this, and it doesnt seem to work.
I get stuck in an infinite boot loop with the fresh splash screen. Occasionally it will boot to my homescreen for a second, when i can see the changed icons in the notification bar, but before i have a chance to un-lock the screen, it goes back to the FRESH splash boot up screen...over and over. Only a battery pull stops it.
Ive tried both amend and edify scripting, and am getting the framework-res.apk files from the original ROM .zip file. I am flashing using amon-ra
Have any of you tried applying a theme like this to your Evos running FRESH? And if you were successful, what did you do?
I searched the forums for this for the last two days or so and have not found any specific posts or topics on this, i am sorry in advance if it is a repeat question....
Thanks in advance

Before you get flamed for posting in the wrong forum...
Have you tried wiping cache/dalvik after replacing your frame-res.apk?
I have used that kitchen successfully on Fresh before, so it should work.
If you search through my posts, there is a modified .apk for fresh with a battery circle (I can't repost now since I'm not at my comp).

I didn't try that yet, perhaps that is where my problems lie. Thanks!
What forum should i be posting to then? i tried in the DEV forum for UOT but XDA wont let me contribute there until i post more elsewhere.
Mods feel free to remove thread if its in the wrong place

Technically, questions should go in the Q&A section. But you are asking about themes, and this is the theme section. Some people get pretty intense about it, a little too much if you ask me.
Anyway, hope the wiping helps.

Have any other mods been flashed to it before you tried this? That may be the problem because you are using the original framework res not the modified one

no mods flashed before it, just using the basic FRESH 3.5.0.1 ROM. Tried it again with the wiping of cache and davilik and it still gets stuck in a boot loop at the splash screen

I tried toggling verifications, as well as amend and edify scripting. Could a particular mod i was attempting to use cause the issue? (IE. some of the mod changes are not compatable with FRESH)
I will try with a simple change like only the battery icon to see if it works

I am in the same boat. Let me know if you figure it out.

[Q] De-Odex Stock Rom?

Hi, I would like to De-Odex the rom I currently have on my phone.
Is there an easy way to do this?
I've read:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
and
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-themes/4620-how-manually-deodex-your-phone.html (there is also a post about this on here)
The xUltimate tool will not work for me, so I need another option.
Phone: HTC Evo
ROM: Stock 3.29 OTA
Rooted (ofc)
Thanks for the help.
Sorry if this is no help, but a deodexed version of the 3.29 OTA is posted somewhere in the dev section. Is there a particular reason why you want to deodex it yourself?

I've been switching between roms but I keep coming back to my original stock one. It's still odex'd and I would like to theme the battery icon on the status bar without having to set everything back up on a fresh rom. Since it reads half when 80% of my battery is remaining.
Thanks for the quick response.

and you said this didnt work for you?
i didnt even know you could deodex your own rom!
going to try this soon!

It wasn't that it didn't work.
I just got an error with Java, not sure how to fix it. Some said to re install java, but i've installed JRE and JDK from 5u20 to 6u21 (32 and 64 bit). Everything I tried gave the same error.
I am going to try asking on their forum and see if they can tell me what I did wrong.
I have a feeling it has to do with the 3.29 OTA update. :-/
Good luck and if you get it to work please let me know your setup.
and if you can't run step 3 let me know... that way I am not the only one to seem that crazy.
option 1 and 2 just adb pulls your /system/apps and your framework.
just got stuck starting option 3:
Starting AccountSyncManager.odex
*Deodexing...
Error occurred while loading boot class path files. Aborting.
org.jf.dexlib.Code.Analysis.ClassPath$ClassNotFoundException....
lower it says
at org.jf.baksmali.baksmali.dissambleDexFile(baksmali.java:103)
and it just gives some more errors until i close it down
i was sooo excited to get this done!
Ahhh! I'll see what I can find out on their forums.
Despite the tutorial saying "Manually De-Odex Your Phone" I think it may be just for droid phones. It was posted in the Moto Droid sections of the forums.
Here is the error I was getting:

dang it...
i just updated my java and nothing, still same error. well let me know what they say. i was about to make an account to post over there but i'll let you do it then.

Both our problems have "org.jf.baksmali" involved.
Hopefully we'll have some answers soon.
well i ran a test and everything said pass, including the odex and deodex. i installed the latest java, and same problem. i had the phone originally as mass storage, so i tried under charge only, and still same problem.
i really hope we get a solution to this
I did some more reading and it seems that app is designed specifically for droid x phones.
I'm now going to try a more hands on approach using avabox...will update tonight.

Were you able to get it DeOdexed?
I found this after some searching... It seems to be the LONG way to deodex an apk. It was written in 2009 so idk how reliable it will be.
http://androidnetwork.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=55
Edit: Link to Avabox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697459
[UPDATE] I tried Avabox and it de-odexed all of the files that I adb pulled. I copied the De-Odexed files back to their respective folder on the /system/, and deleted "rm /system/app/*.odex" (Removing all the .odex files) and rebooted.
I got stuck on the white "HTC Evo 4G" screen and could not get passed it.
I am not sure what I messed up. Maybe I need to resign the files? I'll try that tomorrow.
Let me know how your attempt went. :]
When I left for school I left the script deodexing my app folder...it seems to have done the job and there were no errors. It's doing the process for the framework files now.
Once I move it over to the phone we 'll see if it worked...
I'll update here when I find out...
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
i just tried that too and i got stock in a bootloop.
the avabox script does deodex all the app files. it doesn't do that for the framework files...it seems it'll only deodex .apk files.
anyways, i deleted everything from my /system/app folder and then pushed over the deodexed apks...i also did this for the two apk files from system/framework and the phone did the bootloop thing. so i put back the original /system/framework files, effectively only leaving changed the contents of /framework/app/ and still, bootlooping.
i'm restoring right now...i'll try it some more at another time.
let me know if you figure it out!
I was reading some of the comments on this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598026) They we're saying about problems with de-odexing the framework.
Do we need to resign system apps before we push them back?
I am optimizing my apks now, going to batch resign then try putting just the apks back on.
Well I messages avalaunchmods asking the same thing...if anyone knows it should be him...
Update if you get it working please!
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
Unfortunately, I still don't have any good news. :[
I tried resigning the de-odexed apk's and replacing the ones on my phone.
This got stuck at the white HTC Evo 4G screen.
This failed
Then I optimized, signed, and zipaligned.
This threw me into an actual boot loop. (I was excited... It's the first boot loop i've gotten.)
This failed.
Here is some semi-less-bad news.
I used http://circle.glx.nl/ to make a flashable update.zip for theme-ing. I Flashed it with success and was able to get to the lock screen. Sense UI along with just about every other system app kept force closing.
But I was able to successfully (even though I got FC's) theme and boot using that kitchen.
I am going to mess around with the different settings there and see if I can atleast theme my phone.
Any luck with your attempts?
i was at school all day - no news from me. this is very discouraging though.
i'm surprised nobody else has chimed in! considering how many people are making and releasing roms, some people must know what's going on here
Good news (kinda)
I was able to theme my framework-res.apk without any errors or FC's.
I didn't do anything to De-Odex it but it accepted the theme when I manually edited it.
There must be an xml that scripts how the battery is displaying %'s
since I have 89% of my battery remaining but the themed battery is showing 80%.
I'll dig around and see where it is and add it to my next framework recompile.
We're you interested in just themeing or the whole de-odexing (apps & framework)
If you want to theme it i'll write up a decent tutorial on what I did.
If not I'll write up a quick tutorial for the next root newbie who wants to theme.
Going to test run it and make sure I didn't mess much up.
Edit3: The bad, it would appear that you can't modify the .xml's of the framework. You can only change the pictures.
So the battery wont be able to have the exact %.
Modifying of any .xml leads me to a boot loop.
Tips are appreciated on fixing this.
I'll keep trying.
so here is what i've learned.
i had modified both .com.htc.resources and framework-res before. those files, at least in my rom, are not odexed. everything else in the framework folder is a mix of files, .jar files and other formats, including services.jar, which is odexed. that's why if we change the services.jar file, without the phone being deodexed, it wont work.
that's why i want to deodex my rom. i have too many changes already and dont want to re-do them in another, deodexed rom.
my main interest in deodexing the rom is to have the working battery percentage on top (which used to work on THIS rom before, without deodexing???) and to have a transparent notification tray.
and from there being able to make any other changes as they come up...
i'll see when i have some more time to try out other options, but chances are you will have time before me, so keep updating!

[Q] Please help !! trouble installing modded battery icon

hi all,
i just started to mess around with theming and tweaking things to my own liking. I am using the latest Virtuous Rom and installed the virtuous patch_mrjuje_power_control.
However i don't like the battery icon ..
SO.. i renamed the framework-res.apk to framework-res.zip, extracted it , edit the .png file for the battery, re-zip then renamed the file back to framework-res.apk and pray to god that it'll work.. but it didn't..
Battery icon is missing so now there's an awkward space there
any help would be appreciated =)
thanks
Lol, this is the first time I've seen something like that.
What I'd advice is that just backup everything and reflash virtuous start over again. Or try pulling the framework zip and re-editing it and pushing it back.

yeah tell me about it, I used that method to change the phone animation because metamorphic always give me "not enough space" errors and I have to restart the app 500times to get it working ==" I pulled the battery image from another rom too and edit some on my own. the only reason I can think of is Virtuous display 1% increment so I need to make an image for every step OR I have to use android sdk to edit the .PNG file (which I have no clue) but I am willing to learn if someone points me to the right direction. I have android sdk setup and ready to go on my MacBook
Or you could use the app "battery indicator" from the market I mean at least as a temporary measure it's pretty good.

[Q] Evo Fresh 4.2, Any working themes or removal of time???

Can't seem to find anything for the newest version of Fresh ROM 4.2 that works. I have tried things for the past version and it just throws my fresh load screen through a constant loop. Just looking for some themes and a way to remove the time from the status bar.... (their was a method in 3.5, but it gets the phone stuck on the htc load screen). Thanks

There are no themes for Fresh 4.2 ROM at this time. This is a pretty much stock ROM with few numerous improvements, so any MOD that is not ROM-specific, but works with the latest GB OTA, should flash fine. Again, you have to make sure these MODs are NOT designed for a specific ROM.
To remove clock from the status bar see this post:

and scroll down to options 6, 7, and 8.

Hey buddy, I am also looking for a theme to mingle with fresh 4.2 I've been looking but haven't found anything, not even generic themes mentioned already that work with any gingerbread roms. If you find anything let me know, and if I find anything I will let you know.

After a slightly rocky start (had to re-wipe, re-flash) I've found this ROM to be the bomb! If I could just add back the pull down menu, I'd be in seventh heaven...

Check out UOT Kitchen for all sorts of customizations you can do yourself without having to write code or mess around with system files. It is fairly easy to learn and use even for a n00b. The only thing you'll need to know is how to use ADB. There're plenty of tutorials on XDA for that...

I appreciate the link but it's kind of overwhelming. Honestly I'd rather pay someone else to give me the pull down back.
Tried Widgetsoid - nice app but couldn't get the configuration I really wanted.
All I really want is that pull down...but I can live without it. Otherwise I couldn't be happier with Fresh!

[Q] Problem with Rom: RevolutioN 1.7

OK, so I am not new to the xda desire scene,
(Despite the fact that I can't post in the rom development thread regarding this issue)
I have tried installing this Rom in as many different ways as I can over the past 3 hours:
Using EXT3 rather that EXT4
Changing Hboots
Making sure that I have got the correct download (a2sd+/D++)
Wiping a billion times over
etc etc.
HOWEVER no matter what I do I cannot get this Rom to function
When I boot up for the first time, I just get a wallpaper and notification bar.
No touch screen response/button response.
Only the power button works as a method of turning the screen on/off
I assume from experience at this point in first boot HTC's setup program
(or whatever it is) should start and guide me through
linking up accounts/inputting Wifi keys etc.
I have scoured the rom thread and others regarding rom problems and nobody seems to have had this problem of the Setup manager not starting.
As nice as the Gingerbread Screen On/Off animation is I would prefer to do abit more with my phone
I hope I have posted in the right section and I would very much appreciate it if anyone who has had this experience could help me fix this problem and get a working phone...
(ps. The Rom looks very good, if only I could get it working)
First of all try to redownload the rom!!!

Hey Thanks guys, but..... I re-downloaded the ROM both versions 1.5 and 1.7 (since 1.5 is thought to be more stable) :/ and get stuck at exactly the same place :SSS I'm am abit baffled since I change Rom's alot and have never experienced this before
Did you wipe dalvik? btw your sd card partion need to be at least 1 gigabyte. It worked for me i had same issue as you. First post on XDA
My first installation of 1.7 didnt work and I had to pull the battery and I thought the same thing was happening with my second try, as the screen just went blank after all the crazy changing shapes that happen during boot. However once I touched the power button the setup menu appeared.
I thought this was strange as every other ROM I have tried went straight from the boot animation to the phone starting without the screen blanking out. I know this doesn't help solve your problem but it might mean something to somebody else, who can then help you further.
ps I have been running the ROM for the past week and I haven't had a screen freeze yet. Which has been a revelation for me, as every other ROM ive tried has been really bad for this.

[Q] How to change overscroll actions and/or color?

Hello all,
I have a rooted HTC Droid Incredible with the latest version of the Stock+ ROM, and I personally dislike the green overscroll. I am wondering if there is a way to change it to, say, red; green goes good with the Sense UI, but it doesn't compliment the phone like red does. Aside from that, I'm wondering if there's a way to possibly add an overscroll action that Samsung phones include. I know that CyanogenMod does all this, but the blue theme doesn't appeal to me.
I've read many other threads about re-coloring the overscroll, but all I get in return is UOT Kitchen, which never seems to work.
If anyone could help out with this it'd be greatly appreciated.

UOT is the easiest way to do it. The manual way takes a lot of technical steps. UOT is really very easy to use, you can get instructions here http://uot.dakra.lt/how_to/. If you cant get UOT to work you will never figure out the manual way.
If you cant figure it out you can grab these files from your phone and zip them up, and post a link to them, and i will do it for you. Also tell me the # code of the color red you want.

You can try this even though you dont want my help.
1. Reboot into recovery.
2. Make a backup if you dont already have one.
3. Wipe dalvik-cache from recovery menu - advanced
4. Manually mount /system and /data, and format /cache from recovery menu - mounts and storage.
5. Flash this file Stock+ Red Overscroll.
First boot will take a long time due to wiping dalvik, just be patient.
