So I've had my Defy a week and I like it, more than I thought I would to be honest.
However, one thing that's bugging me is the battery life.
In their review, Engadget actually highlighted the battery life as one of the big plus-points of the Defy.
They state:
Engadget said:
In our experience, the Defy seems to have stellar battery life, which is relatively hard to come by among Android phones. Not only we were able to consistently make it comfortably through an entire day on a charge, but we were surprised to find that after putting the phone away with about 75 percent charge, it was still on with 21 percent remaining two days later. Granted, it spent most of that time in WiFi calling range (which disables the cellular radio), but many smartphones give up the ghost from 100 percent charge in less time...

Now, I'm not using wi-fi calling but I don't think that should excuse or explain the fact that my phone barely lasts a day when at least one other handset has such significantly better battery life.
Anyway, I was just wondering how everyone else's Defys were performing.
Im coming from a vibrant and the battery on this is the best on android so far that i've ever used(g1, mytouch, mytouch 4, vibrant, etc.

If you don't mind me asking though, how long do you go between charges?
As I said, I'm lucky if I make it much more than a day - certainly two days isn't possible.
But I'm not a particularly heavy user, a bit of internet and a few texts here and there but very little in the way of calls, so I kind of feel like I should be getting more out of the handset.
When I check the battery usage, it's quite often ~40% each for 'Mobile Standby' and 'Phone Idle'.
So the vast majority of the drain is just from the phone being on, not from anything I'm actively doing.
Is this your first smartphone? =)
I go a day and a half or so. I'm heavy on web use and playing 'slice it' all day.
for my usage, im THRILLED to have a phone that can still have 30-40% at the end of a long day.

Just try to reboot the phone after fully charged and detached from power. There is an issue with the "suspend" process in some cases (not only on Froyo 2.2) which disappears after rebooting. Mine lasts 2-3 days with average use.
The issue at Google (I am not allowed to post links as a new user )
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
I can use the web steady for 5 hours, this includes some streaming video, if I start at 100% its down to 10% by then. At work it lasts easily all day but it gets little web usage and maybe an hour of talking. I use battery booster and advanced task killer, my backlight is set at 70%.
With moderate use (some calls, lots of texts, some web browsing) I get 2 days. It needs to be charged at the end of day 2, but I'm happy with it. I don't have any ot the social networking crap on so it's not constantly syncing. I think that may have something to do with it. I keep my backlight way down too.
Battery life? i got defy just a week ago and first impressions are good. You know, in the first days you make yuor phone working a lot, testing all the features, trying new apps from the market (so internet connection always on) , watching some movies, playing 3d games!
So a really heavy use, but power lasts at least 1,5 days. So i think using the phone moderately makes the battery life easily up to 3 days.
Try some task-killer app, and then test the power duration. Some softwares stay in background and keep draining power.

No.
And I don't see what that's got to do with anything.
My battery life seems to be noticeably poorer than what the majority of people here are quoting.
If I were to use the web for 5 hours, there's no way I'd have anywhere near 30-40% of my battery left.

Having looked at your link, it sounds as though when that's happening, people can see the Suspend process listed in the break-down of what's using the battery.
I've never seen it listed, so I'm not sure that's the problem here.

I've got Spare Parts installed and it's set to 'aggressively' monitor and kill processes.
A friend recommended it over the likes of Advanced Task Killer because it's supposed to be better at differentiating between apps that are safe to kill and parts of the core software/system that could cause issues if closed.
I get what you're saying about using the phone more than normal because it's new but in the 8 days since I got it, I've spent 7 at work, so I haven't had that much scope to mess around with it.
I've switched the screen from automatic brightness control and I've disabled the background syncing for facebook, so hopefully that'll make a difference.
If not, since it's just over a week, I'm well inside the 28 days I can have it swapped for being faulty.
Quadrant: 1100 points, Linpack: 6,49 Mflops
Edit: ooops, should read the title more carefully next time.
My defy runs for about 40 hours on one battery charge.
i have to charge mine everyday at night after using it whole day, time to time. Not bad tbh.
A task killer is NOT necessary.
It seems like blur services are push rather than pull which uses much less battery (think blackberry). But im not 100%.
I've set up yahoo, corporate, facebook, and picasa just to test it out and it didn't make much difference in my battery life.
I consistently get a day and a half (unless i play games). Can push to 2 days if i put on airplane mode overnight.

Found this on a german forum, as you can see, he was not in flight mode. I guess my desire's battery won't last that long.
I can go about one full day with moderate/somewhat heavy usage. Won't last 2 full days though.

People keep saying that but I'm not convinced.
I mean, if I use my browser say and then finish using it and know I won't need it again for a while, why prevent me from actually closing/killing it?
It seems so ridiculously counter-intuitive.
Plus, if it's really not necessary, then why are so many of them being developed?
Even Samsung are producing task managers now for devices like the Galaxy Tab - if it really wasn't necessary, surely one of Google's top hardware partners would know that.
And samsung is so great at making stuff...? Touchwiz??
Also, samsung's task killer does not show inactive or background apps like most task killers do.
What is the harm in the browser being open? It uses no cpu+ this phone has more than enough ram that it doesn't need you to close apps to keep things running smoothly.
It also will not improve your battery if you arbitrarily close an app only to re-open it later and use more processes.
Just my 2 cents on this topic.

Something i already posted in a german forum about my battery life:
2,5h gaming (Zenonia),
3h mobile internet (ICQ, Yahoo-mail, web, market)
2h of activated WLAN and deactivated sleep to copy stuff from pc to Defy
1,5h music (radio)
and 1h (and 6 minutes lol) of phone calls
After that day, i still had 30% of battery.
The maximum i reached were 75 hours including MY normal use with some mobile internet, some texting and 1 or 2 calls...maybe an hour of gaming at most.
I did not charge it first when i got it, because the battery was at 80% already/still and i wanted to play around.
Current running time: 26 hours...i activate plane-mode at night from now on. Low 70s now.
Everything at minimum display brightness (30%?)

In my opinion, a task killer is absolutely necessary.
All the apps launched keep consuming RAM even if they're not in use. I brought back 106 mb last time i performed a task killing! In most of the cases less ram means worst performances / more work for cpu.
I've had 3 or 4 different evo's and it's been almost impossible to receive decent battery life on almost any rom. It started with CM6 and I switched even though I loved it and went to Baked Snack or some other rom that stated battery life, but it just always ends up dropping on me no matter what. I thought my expectations were too high, I just recently got my last replacement and it's now 3-4 days old. I heard how CM7 and Miui's latest had excellent battery life so I couldn't wait to test them. I first tried CM7 and as long as it's on stand by or not being used the battery was pretty decent I guess. That's with Green Power free running btw. when I turn the phone on to start using it, the percentages just drop. Tried Miui after hearing how good the new battery life is and almost the same thing.
So, that led me to believe it was due to some program, but for the most part I keep these stock. One of the first things I setup are a Gmail account, FB account setup... then of course my apps are added automatically hardly any widgets ever run. If anything it's Buzzbox, I've got beautiful widget's clock now. I use Vlingo, not sure if it's a hog. When I check the battery stats, there's nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. Anyways... there's got to be something wrong, I'm guessing. I've got a regular battery and an extended battery and they both do terrible. I'm going to install a rom from scractch with nothing loaded at all and test the battery. I hate to do that, because testing will take awhile especially with adding one program/widget at a time to monitor the percentages lost.
Here's a list of apps I normally have on my evo and run occassionally:
Vlingo
Green Power Free
Juice Defender (before green power and GB)
handcent
buzzbox
facebook
Swype
Google Services
Voicemail
Are any of these battery abusers without me knowing it?
I normally keep wifi on and connect to it over the 3g data, although I believe Green Power said it cant control the data on the GB roms as of now.
Today, I started with 98% with my extended battery, CM7 and now at 1:00PM I'm at 70% Minimal usage.
Sorry for the long post.
Bluetooth is off most time and Wifi like I mentioned usually is on, because I heard it uses less power than mobile.
sorry for the long post.
Just looking for some assistance.
Restore it to stock.
Calibrate your battery.
Use it for a few days without installing all your apps. If the battery still sucks, then you are probably going places that do not have signal and the phone is searching a lot. Check About - Battery for time without signal.
get a seidio 3500 mah battery and you will enjoy your phone with every little feature turned up to the max

It is a Seidio
Of course it's not as bad as the original, but watching the batter go down 10% while I'm using it is very disheartening. Awhile back, I was able to get decent battery life, but I can't remember what rom, it might have been Baked Snack like 1.6 lol, guessing anyway.

Nuggyunlimited looks like he is onto something. I do not know if he has 4G or not?
I have had my best luck with mikFroyo.
What is going on with google maps? I have the same problem wiht MikFroyo
I am one of the heaviest users around, I stream pandora for about 8 hours , listen to music app about 2 to 3, check facebook and certain websites constantly, my two email acounts check every five minutes, my brightness is at 100 percent, my gps and location services are on, I'm overclocked...using 4.3 mikfroyo with sbc number 7...at the moment I'm using miui with sbc 7 for aosp roms, depends what you do, but either way no matter what kernal or rom you use I'll tell you, this battery will last you all day, this battery changed my evo experience...
edit: I don't use setcpu for profiles, just for overclocking, i dont use juice defender, the useless task killer or anything
edit 2: Conductive i had the same problem update to 4.4 or 4.3

so let me get this straight, average use is 8 hours of pandora, 8 hours of sleep, and that leaves 8 hours for facebook and etc, so lets say 4 hours total for a guesstimate, leaving 4 hours of non activity of the phone being off. 20/24 hours is "average use". I mean this is not a competition of who uses theyre phone more, all im saying is that with this battery you can do pretty much whatever you want without caring with ANY rom or ANY kernal you want.

the battery life is exactly what i expected. ive got a stock sense, rooted with clockwork.
i dont use widgets, no auto syncs. i have complete control over my device and it never leaves my hand. that being typed, i can get about 13 hours of up time.
yes, id like the battery to last longer but im not willing to have a fatty evo for the 3500mAh battery. I purchased a second stock battery, official HTC, so if Im gonna have a long day, ill have a battery with me.

Ok, yesterday I loaded Miui with nothing additional except changing the LCD density to 200, green power (which is useless since wifi doesn't work with this kernel) and right now I'm at 14h, 49m since unplugged with 17% left (normal battery). That's with minimal to average use. I notice when I'm using it, I can watch the percentages just drop, so I guess it's functioning normally and it's due to just my usage and programs, I'm probably expecting too much from my battery, once again I guess. I'm going to try your rom next with my extended battery.
I know what stock battery users go through, and with heavy use they don’t last too long, but I’m now in a different, horrible place entirely and I have the 3500 mAh battery!
I know that something is clearly wrong with my Evo but no one seems to know what it is. As I said I’m also using a 3500 mAh battery, but not to any advantage. In fact I get considerably less usage with this now then I used to get with the stock 1500mAh battery, regardless of the ROM or kernel.
Current specs:
HTC EVO 4G, Hardware 0003
16GB Wintec Class10 MicroSD
SEIDIO 3500mAH Battery/Camera Protector
Calkulin's EViO 2 v1.7.7 (have run several different Sense and CM ROMs)
HTC kernel #15v7 (doesn’t matter, have tried stock and every TM, regular and SBC)
Quadrant ≈ 1365
Linpack ≈ 33.05 MFLOP
and…(drum-roll please)
Battery Life: 70% after 6 hours, literally next to no usage.
Before middle of last November, if I charged the phone fully (without the benefits of SBC), and then just unplugged it on a Saturday night and let it sit unused for like 19-hours, the charge would be around 89%, +/- 1%, with the stock battery. In that same scenario now the 3500 mAh battery would have shut the phone down long before 19-hours rolled around.
Yesterday, using the 3500 mAh extended battery, no phone calls, Bluetooth on for about 20-miutes this morning for the drive to work and was turned off upon my arrival, and I’ve sent and received 4-5 messages on GTalk. That’s it.
The current status:
Charge: 70%
5h 52min unplugged
Up time: 6:15
Awake time: 1:20
Battery Usage screen:
Cell Standby: 42%
Phone Idle: 43%
Android System: 8%
Bluetooth: 4%
Display: 3%
Phone runs great; everything works great, no other issues. It once fell about 10”-12” onto plush carpet (kitten attack). It was in the Sprint case with the stock battery then, and has not been dropped otherwise. If anything, I am ridiculously careful with it.
Something happened the middle of last November like a switch was flipped, and battery life has been horrible ever since. Since we got our Evos back in the very beginning of June, 2010, I don’t think that returning it to the Sprint Store was an option then or now.
No one seems to have seen anything like this or have any clue what the issue might be, but it was suggested that I RRU it back to original, update it to current and then test the battery usage. Then, basically just live with it and see if it helped. After that, I’ll re-root and get on with life, whether battery life is better or not.
Any constructive thoughts are welcome. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for the input. I thought about that so I tried the 3500 mAh in my wife's stock Evo and it runs forever. I'm so envious! I've swapped her stock battery and mine and they both run the same in either phone.
In mine, the stock battery usage is proportional, too. Fully charged and unplugged at 6:00 AM and with absolutely zero usage, sleeping screen off the entire time, by around 2:00 PM the stock battery was at 41%. That was also with very minimal synching (I've tweaked those settings nicely), no bluetooth, etc. I believe that the awake time was like 36mins. Sick, but unfortunately not in a good way.
Since it can't hurt, I think that I may do the RUU thing this weekend and then re-root afterwards. It may not help, but its literally the only thing that I can think of that I haven't tried.
Again, thanks for your thoughts. Have a great day!

Sorry, I've bypassed your rom for so long, but I've got it loaded now. Looking forward to trying it out. I can't lie I love and miss CM7 and Miui, but if my battery seems to last longer with a sense rom, then I'll be switching. So far it is very snappy and quick. Do you recommend I stick with the stock kernel or switch to something else? Do you use any setcpu, juice defender, green power or anything?
Do you have theme's as well?
Updating a titanium backup for my apps now.
I'll post back how it goes. I would say I had the same problem as the user above, but this has happened on mutliple phones and roms.
I know with a new phone you need to cycle the battery quite a few times. Someone told me roms were similar, even though I never understood why. Would you say that's true? In order to give the rom time to adjust to the battery and settings you need to give it 3-5 days?
so i was using cm7 with tiamat 3.3.5 sbc kernel and noticed that my phone wasnt charging as fast. it basicly got to the point where it was losing battery while it was plugged in so i tried updating radios and that only gave me terrible data speeds i could not fix. i ended up unrooting and it fixed my data speeds but my phone wont charge still. the green charger icon doesnt change it stats at one bar. has this been seen before? is there a fix? or did i mess up my battery by knowing the risk of sbc and still using it.
Stock charger? stock usb cable? Stock battery? have you tried other batteries? Other chargers? need some info here.
Prepare to get flamed for suggesting that sbc may have caused it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
It could be your usb port, it's a fairly common problem. Mine came loose, I took it to Sprint & they gave me a new one.
glad i didnt get flamed. thanks for your help i tried a friends stock charger and usb cable and it charged. been charging it and all looks good. what a relief as it doesnt seem to look like its the battery. i had lost my htc usb cable that came with the evo and bought a replacement by belkin. this has to be it, i just didnt suspect it as i just bought this cable like a month ago! thanks for the heads up, glad the sbc kernel was not the problem.
what i find weird though is that i tried my friends phone with my charger and her phone worked. now i tried my charger on my phone and it charges again. now i dont know what the problem is.

i really do think aosp roms are not as stable and something must have happend. i might try that rom, or mikfroyo 4.61 as i had that before. i just want to be able to theme the status bar to black
If you don't like AOSP ROMS just don't use them.
But don't sit here and bash them, people spend a lot of time building them for you all for the hefty price of FREE.

maybe try Deck's as well. I use that and love it. It's a lot more vanilla than CM7, but I love it.

What's moderate use? I'm tired of everyone claiming moderate use 10 hours 20 hours it's a load of garbage...I'm lucky to get 20 hours on a 3500 battery...I'm sorry that you look at Facebook twice a day play a song send 3 texts, make a phone call and call that moderate use but I actually use my phone instead of bragging about what kernel gives me all this standby battery life. No matter what you use heavy, light, moderate, even though I hate using those words, no kernel will give you the benefit of a true 3500 battery. Yes you can undervolt under clock etc but it will not make a huge difference. I'm sorry but no one with a regular battery is getting over 10 hours on their phone if they actually use it...run a test for me if you disagree...call you house and leave it on the call, see how long from 100 percent it takes to drain...you'll see it eats away just as bad as pandora. My stock battery sits in my draw, it's sh*t...

Okay, you're blaming SBC for destroying your battery. People who never use SBC have this problem all the time...statistics indicate that you're initial diagnosis of your problem is wrong. Assuming that, let's move forward.
Likely candidates:
1. The microUSB plug on the phone is broken: take it back to Sprint.
2. The charger itself is malfuctioning: buy a new one.
3. The battery is old and/or defective: replace battery.
Before doing anything irrational (like blame your problems on SBC), try a different charger, a different battery and trying your battery and charger on a different phone. If it charges with a different charger: the charger is the problem. If it charges with a different battery, the battery was messed up (NOT SBC'S FAULT). If none of it works, the most likely thing is the charging port on the phone is broken, then it's time to take a drive.
Now, ehem, my pedestal please:
If SBC was a real problem that caused real screw ups in user phones, then far more than 10-15 people would be experiencing problems. Many of us have been using SBC kernels since January with absolutely no problems at all. In fact, just the other day, I got 34 hours of battery life on an SBC kernel (stock battery, moderate use). No overheating, no battery malfunction, no charging issues...ever. Not even a hint of it. So, before you blame a piece of software programming that you don't understand, you should know it's far more likely that the battery died, that you yanked the charger cable out wrong on accident or that things just grow old and die than it is that a piece of software is responsible for taking out only a dozen batteries while thousands of users remain unaffected.
It's like saying there's a flu epidemic when only 20 people out of 1000 are sick. 20 people out of 1000 are sick anyway, relax, it's not SBC.

Yes, I used moderate use. I send between 200-300 texts a day, check and update my facebook and Twitter semi-frequently (10-12 times in a 12 hour period) A little angry birds here, a little SNES emulator there. I don't get a lot of phone calls. Reading news articles out of my rss feeds (usually while going to the bathroom or bored at school...10 articles a day), I am an avid and frequent FourSqaure user and I sign in any chance I get (which means my GPS is almost always on) and I check every last e-mail I get from 3 addresses (2 Yahoo!, one Gmail). Plus, other things I may have forgotten.
With no mods, hacks, no custom roms or other tampering, I get about 5-7 hours. To get better battery life, I do a variety of things, like turning mobile data off when not in use and using an SBC kernel. Not leaving my display on when I don't need it, static undervolting, etc.
Now remember, there's a few levels above moderate. Such as: moderately heavy, heavy, very heavy. You, with your 20 hours of battery life on a 3500, are obvioulsy a very heavy user. If you don't believe my usage is moderate, then maybe you should write a guide for all of us describing what moderate, low, heavy, etc usage is so people don't make you so mad.
thats the proble, theres no such thing, its all opinionated, i can name what i feel is moderate, you may or may not agree, bottom line is that you will not get a smooth, flat agreement on what is what, turning off mobile data is cheating IMO, leave that on at all times to get a regular number, if i turn mobile data off with 10 percent on a 3500 battery, i can go for hours on end, thats really not a solution since you wont recieve emails or updates until you turn it back on...

Want to get a small survey. Do you guys leave 4G on all day and only 4G, no JuiceDefender or radio tricks and get good battery?
Post your results please!
I use Setcpu for screen off and underclock to 1.35 GHz and average 12 hours allowing 4g to stay on throughout my day.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
I've been getting about the same battery length whether I'm on 4G only or WiFi+EDGE - which is around 6-8 hours. This is without additional battery-saving techniques.
i get around 8-9 hours if i leave 4g on....... without it 12+
what settings do you have on setcpu i have it downloaded but i haven't used it on this phones tips will help
Yes 4G on, no JD help, no wifi relying. My buddy's Droid bonic has the extended 2880 mah battery and I'm darn jealous, keeps LTE on and lasts a day streaming google music all day. This is obviously the perfect setting we all want, fast 4G, sync on, blistering powerhouse, no compromise usage.
I've got a profile during screen off for 384mhz/192 powersave
Main is 1350/192 ondemand. Phone remains smooth and usable.

I'm really shock today, picked up an exchange yesterday and today I'm getting over 15hrs with 4G on and fully stock and I still have 33% left. This is with a few calls, music streaming and texting.
First unit I would get around 8-10hrs.
So yeah, I'm a happy camper, lol.

That's really good and your initial numbers are more in line with the majority of the members here. I wonder if its ether phone itself or the battery. :-T
im surprised as well i leave everything on and the phone is still alive all day. have 4g on, sync, stream, web, text, couple calls, screen brightness set to automatic.
i think if i do some battery saving techniques i could push 2 days/
been on for 13 hours and still have 26%.
way better than the 8 - 10 hour max on my vibrant.
havent had to worry about charging my phone on at all

Wow, there has to be some issue causing some of us to only get 8 hours out of a battery and others getting 13+. Starting to make me wonder if I have a bad one.
I keep 4g on & I get good battery life too. I don't underclock or even mess with the CPU at all either.
im starting to wonder if I got one with a really good battery, ill post screens tomorrow but since I bought the phone like 3 weeks ago I have Never turned off 4g. im on wifi at home but where I work for 8 or more hours in on 4g. i leave wifi on anyway and i dont use juice defender or any power saving modes, i tend to use full brightness, and i play with my phone (checking phandroid and cnet/videos, rev3 etc...) whenever I'm not in a sale.
all of that and my battery always lasts more than 12 to 15 hours.
I will charge tonight and post screens either as soon as I remeber when on low battery.
is anyone else getting great battery life?

i only know my own definitions of high and low use I guess but id estimate an average of being touched at least 60% of every hour, up to 90% at work and when I'm bugging my fiance for playing with my phone too much at home its up to 100 lol
and at least once a day I flash something and reboot twice and run sd maid and i play some games like shadowgunner, samurai vengeance 2 and i love dragon fly :-D
I'm rooted btw

Just my two cents, but I leave my 4g on all the time. I literally never turn it off and I get a full days (moderate) use out of my SGS II. I don't know how, but this is BY FAR the very best battery life i've ever gotten out of an Android; and I've owned quite a few out them by this point (since the original hero). I know it's battery is very large for an oem/ as it comes battery and for me I can really tell.
Amazing battery life on a single charge
I'm getting 13+ hours with 4G on all day. Simply amazing battery life.
My phone is rooted with Teshxx streamlined ROM loaded, with no additional power saving apps of features running.
I'm in an area with amazing 4G signal, my phone never switches to 3G/Edge.
It is possible your mileage may vary if the phone is switching constantly between the two.

My first one I did only get around 8-12hrs, but I hadn't mess with my apps.
This time around I set up the apps the refresh themselves to do it every 4hrs (like Facebook, tweeter, weather bug, etc)

I'll bite. First off, detail your setup. modem, kernel, ROM.
Second, from your graph it doesn't look like you are in a good service area, how many bars do you usually have?
4+ in screen time. At 4% left.
Rom: calkulin 2.8.1
Kernel: rogue desperado
modem: ek02
undervolted -100mv with calk's script. Max cpu set to 1ghz

Sorry i could have sworn i uploaed a picture of my setup. its now the third picture.
i usually have around 3-4 bars. at that time i was at work but that is a constant drain home or anywhere else. at home i get much better signal.
Have you ever had reasonable battery life, or is this a new issue?
It's possible that your battery is bad, but I think it's unlikely unless it's been under high temps for an extended time.
Some suggestions I'd try if it was me;
- backup your sd card and reformat it
- try running calk 2.8.1 without the ics theme to see if usage improves
- run your setup without wiping/flashing for a few days and see if the phone settles in
Good luck getting it sorted.

When I first started, I was getting horrible battery life. Like 50% loss in 4 hours. Here are a few things you can try.
1. Turn off auto sync to google
2. Turn off facebook and sync
3. Turn off email syncing
You get the pattern. I think for me it was the fact that I was in a horrible reception area and all of the syncing made the phone constantly try to get a connection. Now i get 5-10% loss in 4 hours, which I'm happy with.
Kernel and modem are important too, so might help to tell us what you're using exactly.
Hope this helps.
EL26 and EL29 Kernels/Modems were huge battery drainers for me.
My set up is calks 2.8.1
Kernel: Desperado flashed yesterday
And modem El 36.
You ask about having strong cell signal, I guess it will drain the batter if you're going in and out of service? Just curious because on my way to and from our shop there is one spot where all phones drop service. It only lasts about 1/8 mile but it happens with every carrier I've tested.
Like someone above said turn off all syncing also keep in mind that phone batteries now dont hold the first 10% of a full charge because that damages the battery in the long run. The first 10% always goes down that fast unless you bump charge which is when you plug in to 100% then unplug and replug for 5 minutes and repeat a few times. If it continues to die like that then try underclocking with setcpu while you have it with screen off or in a phone call also you can undervolt. Turn off auto syncing and check to see what proccesses you have running that eat your battery and kill them.

How long does the battery last to an almost full discharge? I had the same problem when I flashed a new ROM and tried calibrating the battery as you did (deleting battery stats file). I'd unplug my phone after a full chatge and 30mins later would be down to below 90%.
Turns out that deleting the battery stats file may not do anything to our phone in terms of calibration, and the way to calibrate it is by doing a battery pull for half an hour or so. Then just using the phone, and the battery eventually calibrates itself. Can't remember the link where I read this, but after doing that and after a couple weeks of usage, the first 10% drop wasn't so dramatic. I currently get a day with an average of 3-4 hour screen on time. Using the same ROM that seemed to give me problems in the first place.
Also like someone else mentioned, phone signal is a huge factor in battery usage. One of the cell towers went down where I live, and during those 7 days (yeah, thanks sprint!), my phone would constantly jump back and forth off of roaming... battery life would tank so quickly that I turned off data/3G/4G to get any semblance of battery life.
