I just want to know if this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503
will work with the rom from RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed be safe to use for this phone?
I believe I will need to allow downgrade (part 3 in the guide) As from what I can tell I'd be going from 1.85 to 1.34 is that correct?
After it is done can I use over-the air updates in the generic HTC environment to update? what is the current version for this phone?

I've just tried running dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 of=/sdcard/misc.img from adb and got the error
/dev/block/mmcblk0p17: cannot open for read: Permision denied
Which makes sense because I don't have root and can't use SU to get #
Does that mean I'm going to need to root it before i can debrand it? - I don't know that this version can be rooted. Am I stuck until there is a root method for this software?

check out the G2 forums and work on the guide. the most popular is the gfree method. Hopefully that will help you out.

I ran Visionary+ r14 and the temproot now function won't even work, goes back to the menu and If i open the terminal emulator on the phone SU gives permission denied

I found a guide on cyanogenmod wiki that used misc_version and psneutter to gain temp root and that worked

Debranding worked an I'm now on 1.34, which is android 2.2 - thing is, now the over-the-air updates don't work. I'm not sure why, shouldn't I be able to just update to a higher (non branded) version now?

I was just on that site trying to temporarily root my device, it has same software version as yours, from vodafone australia.
it says falied to open backup file after i enter this line
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5 in command prompt
so did you actually root your device succesfully, beein trying but i keep getting permission denials and stuff
can you post me the method you used

Hi all
Definite noob so be easy on me. Just wanted to see if anyone has been successful since? I understand it's been a year, but google is of no help...
I'm with Voda with my HTC Desire Z and tried to gain root (even temp) but to no avail (using http: // wiki. cyanogenmod. com /wiki /HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting sorry can't externalink because haven't posted enough yet).
I seem to stop somewhere pushing Superuser.apk
Reason for debranding is because I'm so sick of the crap Voda add in there...

for downgrade (u will need to create a goldcard for debranding):

@CID: HTC__044 - What does it mean?

Despite that, did I do a successful root?
From the information you posted, you are S-Off (@secu_flag:0) and your sim is unlocked (@SIMLOCK=00), so you should have successfully rooted.
Just to verify, do you have superuser privileges? If you do, then you should be set.
If you want the supercid privileges, I cannot help you there. I did not have that problem when I used gfree, nor have I seen anyone else with this problem.
Quick question though. Since you have everything but supercid, did you run:
# ./gfree -f
# sync
Or did you run another line besides "-f".
That is the only thing that I can see as to why you do not have it, but then again, my knowledge is limited when it comes to gfree.

I did run -f and sync. The Superuser app is on the applications menu. I just wanted to make sure I was properly rooted. I was also able to make a backup of the ROM (I already had S-Off before from a previous attempt). I tried following the procedure to set S-Off back to S-On using #./grfree -s on but I got permission denied. I am not sure if I was doing it right.
My HTC Desire Z was bought in Singapore last December and this is the current About Phone information I have:

I am not even sure if this already has the 1.72 update everyone has been talking about. How do I find that out?
Your software number tells you what version you are running.
You have 1.34, not the 1.72 update.
If you had the 1.72 update, you would not have been able to use the wiki, you would have had to use the new method (psneuter) to obtain temp root and then downgrade to an older version to then be able to use gfree.

Thanks! I was able to flash to Cyanogen 6.1.1 but the onscreen buttons are just making haptic feedback but no response. I'll see what I can find to get this one working and will try other ROMs as well. I am currently downloading MIUI. What other ROMS can I try?

Cynogen Mod and MIUI are like the only ones ;p
you could try GingerVillan 1.4 but that requires Clock works recovery 3.0
You can also try a rooted sense rom as well, if you so please.
Also, the CM7 nightlies are on the Cyanogenmod website if you so please to run that, but that requires clockworkmod recovery 3.x.x.x
Stuck with HTC__044
I did the gfree per rooting process with -s off only. I have even installed cm7 with no problem. Now i need totryied change my CID to 11111111 to update more things. I tried running gfree again with -cid 11111111 but no success. How do i change it? Im stuck.

[Q] Branded DHD? Backup Stock rom?

I'm using the DHD for a couple of weeks now and I'm glad to say its a BIG difference between my almost bricked Xperia X1. But... as all of you guys out there, it is interesting to try new roms and features.
Enfortunately I think I've got a branded phone but I don't know for sure... My carrier is Vodafone, and I already tried looking for the exact smalbandversion but I can only find "RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed".
I think there is a difference between these roms because of the "12.28b.60.140eU", but I don't know for sure. Can someone clear this up for me please? Also because the release-keys don't match...

Since I'm paying for ensurance of the phone, I must be able to set everything back to stock again. Is there a way to backup my stock rom before flashing a new one?
Anyone please?
Sounds like just ordinary 1.32.405.6... You can check that via terminal emulator (market), type "getprop ro.cid". If it is something like VODAPxxx, it is branded.
You can backup stock ROM in ClockworkMod before flashing, it is possible in "backup & restore" menu. Make sure that you have at least 1 gig of free space in your SD.
jkoljo, thanks a lot!
getprop ro.cid gives me -> HTC__E11, so I expect I'm good to go?
So with Clockworkmod I can generate a "stock.rom" file that I can flash when I need to send the phone to HTC/Vodafone for repair after I've worked with a couple of other roms?
HTC__E11 = Dutch offical HTC, not branded to any carrier
It "responds" to HTC WWE RUUs, congratulations. You do not even have to make a backup, WWE RUU is your stock ROM! And it is actually a lot easier to return to stock when you can use a RUU.
ClockworkMod will make kind of a stock.rom, but that image does not contain hboot, splash1 etc, which in a RUU can return ENG S-OFF, clockworkmod recovery and other stuff to stock condition. You can check out my Radio S-OFF Tool's S-ON instructions, it is very simple when you have the RUU.
Great news jkoljo, thanks a lot for your help and information!!!
I'll inform myself about how flashing/s-off etc. works, because its a bit different than with my X1, i'll definately use your s-off method, after watching your video it can't go wrong
Tnx m8
Rooting problem
I encounter a problem I want to S-OFF my device so I tried temprooting my phone by using visionary.
This results in a black screen after it says "rooting device". Rebooting/reinstalling whatsoever wont work... I tried looking for answers and found many users encountering this problem, only they use 1.72 and have android 2.2.1. I'm using 1.32 and 2.2 so I should be able to root normally right?
EDIT: I checked "Set system r/w after boot" and this seems to fix my problem. I guess rooting worked because Terminal Emulator lets me do the "su" command. (it do flashes an info box saying Terminal Emulator gained superuser permissions)
Next problem... your s-off tool says "error: connection problem". I set the connection mode to "charge only", and starting the .exe with admin rights wont fix it.
EDIT #2: I was too fast installing the HTC Sync app fixed this. Continuing...
I ran the command getprop ro.cid
And result was "HTC__038"
I would like to know, how to take a backup of my current Rom and also if possible is there a stock rom for it, in case i want to revert back after rooting.
Appreciate your help

[Q] Problems at downgrading from 1.32.720.5 to 1.32.405.6

hello.
i having some problems for downgrading my dhd from version 1.32.720.5
to the 1.32.405.6 version.
i was looking up on this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
and acted according to it.
the 1.32.720.5 is probably an indian version of dhd [branded?] so i have done
the Goldcard guide as well.
the goldcard was done with the using of mmc2 instead of mmc1.
[adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc2/mmc2:*/cid' ]
i was continuing with the original downgrade guide and with all the commands
mentioned there, but got stuck in this one:
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter - i reciving a OPERATION NOT PERMITTED problem
1. what is the problem and how can i fix it?
2. do i need a goldcard?
3. do i need to downgrade at all?
4. can i downgrade to 1.32.405.6 in a different way?
thx for helping. [search didn't work, its says all the time try in 20-30 min]
Why are u downgrading ? If its to root u dnt hav to
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
i understood that the 1.32.720.5 is a brannded version from india...
so i need to do all that goldcard downgrade guides?
bump.
still looking up for an answer.
am i need to install a 1.32.405.6 RUU instead?
i have tried to do the root guide with no success
i have s-on on boot, and when i go on to the recovery tab, i get a red " ! " sign.
Help!
You do not need to downgrade, just use visionary and then do S-OFF.
thanks for answer

if you have HTC Desire HD from india (1.32.720.5) you dont have to downgrade to root you phone just follow the cyanogenmod to temp root and then permanent root to root your phone follow this link
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Rooting
visionary will not work for Indian HTC Desire. I haven't done the Engineering HBoot as it is too dangerous and i really dont want to brick my new phone. All the best rooting your HTC Desire HD.

[Q] Problem with Downgrading DHD build 2.36

Ok - firstly I know that to 'root' a 2.3.3 DHD you need to downgrade, root, 'S-off' then (re)upgrade,
AND I know that with build 2.37 it is not currently possible to do so
Since I can't post in the devlopment threads (I'm a 'newbie' - not enough posts) I'm having to increase my post count before I can & so hence this post
But I've got a weird problem with my phone..
A bit of background first
- I had Android 2.2 on an Unbranded DHD (well, I think it is - no network customisation & it can use any SIM card)
- I used Visonary+ (r14) to 'PERMROOT' the phone
- But I never did the 's-off' business (I never planned to install a Custom ROM so thought I'll never need to)
I did a FOTA upgrade to 2.3.3
Phone info now shows
Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense Version: 2.1
Baseband version: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.10-g0956377, [email protected] #1, Tue Mar 29 06:10:15 CST 2011
Build number: 2.36.405.8 CL47853 release-keys
Software number: 2.36.405.8
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
So I've tried downgrading to older version - as mentioned in this thread (& since it's an unbranded phone - I don't need a 'goldcard')...
...now, everything goes smoothly up until Step 2b (since I have Android 2.3.3 & Build 2.36), but when I type in 'adb shell' instead of the # I get the $
Now I've been searching/reading here that this is ONLY suppose to happen on Build 2.37 - so why am I getting it on 2.36 ??
I can only guess that there are in fact DIFFERENT 2.36 builds & the version I have is a newer version that has had whatever exploit patched
Can any 'experts' confirm this ?
If it's true then I guess I'm one of the many that'll have to wait for a 'proper' root exploit to appear
You seem to have the same software stuff as me im probably more noob than you, so I will watch this thread! hopefully you get help soon
Edit- if you don't mind , i might aswell ask you a question, as you are a step ahead of me....
Section 2b [For Gingerbread ROMs, 2.x]
Connect Desire HD to a computer. Charge only, USB Debugging enabled!
Open up a cmd and go to Downgrade folder, execute commands:
Code:
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb push GingerBreak /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/GingerBreak
adb shell
./data/local/tmp/GingerBreak
What is a cmd???
thanks
'CMD' is the 'Command Prompt'
If you use Windows (this is for XP, it should be the same for Vista and '7')
Click on the [ Start ] button
(I think on Vista/7 it's a circular icon bottom left of the taskbar)
Click on 'Run'
In the box that shows up - type in 'CMD'
You then get a window pop up that virtually a black screen with something like
Code:
Microsoft Windows XP
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\>
It's this that you then have to type in the commands to root the phone (if it was actually working that is )
yay i done it! rooted and got CM7 to work, although , android market is not installed (wth?)
Well done, glad some1 had luck with it.... out of curiousity though
Did YOU have Android 2.3.3 ?? - & if you did do you happen to remember the build number of it ??
I'm still puzzled as to why I get '$' instead of the '#' if I had Build 2.36
Yeah I was 2.3.3 , I think everything was pretty similar to yours...I did get a $, but I continued anyway writing everything else and ended up with the #
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Ah right.....
I didn't continue from that point - 'cos I thought I did something wrong & that's why I got the '$' & not the '#'
I'm also guessing you did the 'Visionary+' to give you temp/perm root (I forgot to mention that that little bit of info, although it IS in the Radio S-Off guide ) then used the 'Radio S-off' tool ??
& After that have you updated BACK to 2.3.3 again (& still got root) & if so was it using the OTA (Over The Airways) method or did you install a custom ROM ??
(I only want Root so that I can install 'adfree' & 'Droidwall' but still use HTC's own firmware - I'm not interested in custom ROMS or ClockworkMod ATM)

You need to instal gapps after flashing Cyanogen.
By the way Cyanogenmod is awesome - its a fair bit faster than bloated Sense.

Actually - I've sort off given up for the moment to attempt the rooting of the phone, hoping that a simple 'one-shot' method crops up eventually for 2.3.3 (like an updated Visionary ) so that I don't have to downgrade first
As said I'm not really interested in Custom ROM installation - just want to install a couple of root apps ('Droidwall' and 'adfree' are the main ones)
I am/was using the same thing as phil.cunningham67, [HTC Sync] & getting the same problem of adb being 'out of date' on each line, so I might just try that Android SDK pack/Java JDK combo at a later date myself & see if I can get it to work
If/when I do & still have problems - I'll know where to come for help
BTW - as for my OP question... do you know why I get a '$' instead of the '#' with my 2.36 build ??
Could it be because of the 'HTC Sync' adb being 'out of date' ??
Of course you will get $ after running Adb Shell command. You will only get a # after you run GingerBreak(the ./data/local/tmp/GingerBreak part) and you successfully hack you DHD.
And just to mention, there is no way to Perm root the FOTA update 2.36 (2.3.3) from HTC, you can only temp root it to downgrade I am afraid.
Well.... as long as I can 'downgrade' > [temp] 'root' > 'S-off' > FOTA upgrade to 2.3.3
AND then still be able install those couple of programs I've mentioned (maybe a couple more) - I'll be happy
Might even try over the weekend if I'm not too busy

I wouldn't think so my friend. S-Off is not enough to run programs that require Root access. You need to have Perm Root, or you need to do the process of Temp rooting everytime you reboot your phone.
The easiest solution ofc will be downgrade> Temp Root> PermRoot> S-Off> Eng S-Off> Flash recovery> Flash a custom Rom with near stock experience, like the seraphic stock GB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059563&highlight=seraphic
Goodluck
Well - considering I only used 'temp root' using Visionary+ (R14) when I was on Android 2.2 & that I very rarely had need to reboot the phone - I can't see that being much of a problem
Even with temp root - 'Droidwall' and 'Adfree' worked perfectly OK before my FOTA, & that's basically all I want
Without S-OFF any changes you make to /system will not remain after a reboot.
If you ENG & Radio S-OFF then FOTA to 2.3, ENG & Radio S-OFF remain OFF you can then use Gingerbreak to achieve root. Sorted.

I am interested in learning more about what was fixed on phil.cunningham67, cause @ the moment I am suffering from tying to figure a way to root... my current OTA update i just got ran my software # to 2.43.661.1
I am curious... is the a new downgrade package that has to be made yet for me to get the ability to downgrade, root, etc?
There were a number of problems Phil had.
1) His adb was outdated
2) He repeatedly got the VOLD error
3) Then the boomsh error
4) He didn't really know what to do (no disrespect to Phil).
Via TeamViewer I guided him through the process, showing him the steps taken.
In the end we rooted/downgraded/rooted again/S-OFF'd/customised.
It took about 2 hours from start to finish.

How would one go about getting your services if you believed you could downgrade Software version # 2.43.661.1
From what I've been reading, it is not yet possible to downgrade this high of version as of yet.
Would definitely be interested in rooting since the Update has may flaws which have driven me mad.

[Q] help with root for HTC Desire HD (android 2.3.5 / software 3.12.178.2)

Firstly, thank you to all the people who have contributed to helping others root their phones. There is a lot of information and software that has been written and made available for free and it is really appreciated.
Now, onto business...

I did not have root so could not proceed.
Does anyone have other suggestions that I might try? I don't mind if the articles are long or complicated. I just want to find a way to root my DHD! =)
I wonder as well with my DHD on 2.3.5. I triedSuperoneclick 2.3.3 ... it runs through and says it's rooted ... but it isn't ;(
I also tried triedSuperoneclick. Just seemed to not complete after step #7 on my PC.
This allowed me to get a temp root:
[GUIDE] Downgrade from 3.13 (Sense 3.0) roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424023
I downgraded to the previous official HTC Desire HD Rom ... rooting worked after that, Now it's happily running ICD 4.0.3. Did that useing the Ace Hack Toolscript.
I tried AAHK, but it didn't like my build number for some reason. Good to hear you got yours working too.
So much faster without all the vodafone bloat on there. Boot time used to be so long that I would fear a reboot. Also running is so much faster.
Tried the newest Ace Hack? Has a newer version number, maybe it helps. It did hack my DHD with 2.3.5.
Hi , I have been having the exact same issue as you, tried most things with no luck, was wondering if you have had any success
Can those failing to root please specify which version of aahk you are using?
You have to downgrade so you'll be able to s-off, because with s-on you can't have perm root. I don't recommend you to use Ace Hack, i think misc_version method is pretty much safer, but remember you have to read everything (radio version!!!, hboot,....) in order to prevent any hard brick.
You don't need perm root you just need temp root (using superoneclick), although
you have to change the misc_version to the Ruu software your are using to downgrade (i.e 1.32.405.6). Do md5check for all downloaded files.
Good Luck.

You can root android 2.3.5 sense 3.0 with superoneclick 2.3.3 if you're already S-OFF.
Sent from my DHD supercharged with ICS.

Hello,
Firstly, thank you to all the people who have contributed to helping others root their phones. There is a lot of information and software that has been written and made available for free and it is really appreciated.

The only working tool to root and gain S-OFF is the Hack Kit. You won´t find it here but is a matter of search only.
Unlocking the bootloader with HTCDEV is useless and besides, you leave track and therefore you might lose warranty....The hack kit works for your build, but needs to be downgraded first. Just read a bit more in the effen manual....:good:

You could try modacco visionary. I cant say it would work on the DHD, but since you are so desperate in rooting your DHD which has a defective volume rocker.....you give it a try.
I mean it worked on Mytouch 4g running 2.2. And the Mytouch 4g and the Desire HD basically have the same chipset and also share some features. Thats why devs mostly port from the Mytouch 4g and devs from the Mytouch 4g port from the DHD. So as i said you can give it a try.
But i am not responsible for what happens to your DHD.
