New SD Card - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking of ordering a 16GB SD card to upgrade from my 8GB, and I was wondering, how can I "start fresh"? Meaning, how can I start off with nothing really on it? A friend of mine copied everything from his old SD Card to his new one, however, I don't want to copy everything. There's a lot of files and folders in my current SD Card that I don't want and unsure if I should delete them or not.
If this helps, the rom I'm currently using CyanogenMod 7 RC2, still need to upgrade to RC4 when I have the time. My phone is HTC Desire GSM.
Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

Well to kill two birds with one stone, just copy across the personal data you'd like to keep in their correct folder directories, stick on the new CM RC4 zip, wipe the old data and flash the new zip in recovery as you normally would, then as you installed a fresh copy of CM, your sd card contains all it needs for it to run.

[Q] Cleaning up SD card

I have so much junk on my SD card from deleted apps, ROM downloads, original root zips. I want to format the card to get rid of the junk. I realize that it will wipe out some current data. I can reinstall that on a selected basis. What would be the proper way... Format? Re-Download and flash ROM.
Im running CM6 RC1 with Nightlys
Thanks in advance
I would just back up the data that you know you'd want (maybe pictures, or folders of certain apps) then just format the SD card. I'm not sure if there's "mission-critical" stuff in there nowadays, since Froyo lets you use the SD card a lot more (to store apps among other things), that would be up to you I think.
But you shouldn't have to flash the ROM again. I'm waiting until 32GB micro SD cards are cheaper then I'm just going to change my 8 with that.

I thought this would be a great idea the first time i looked at my sd card and realized it was halfway full after 1 day with my evo, so i backed up my photos and videos and music formatted it and installed a rooted rom, the only problem is, that flashing a rom full (rooted or unrooted, I tried both) none of the folders on the sd card get recreated, which causes a problem when taking your fist few pics, and it then lumps all photos and videos into the same folder, kinda creates a messier sdcard than I had originally anticipated, wished i had imaged the card first so i could put everything back where it belonged, even if it was just a blank folder, but thats just my 2 cents

[Q] tried to upgrade microsd card- lost a bunch of installed apps

I looked on here and it looked like to upgrade to a bigger microsd card, i just had to copy everything onto the new card and i'd be good to go.
Well i tried that and when i put the new card in, a lot of installed programs were missing, including marketplace.
So i put the original card back in, but i have the same problem. Those programs are still missing. I know they were there before because I used the marketplace last night to install an app.
Any ideas what i messed up and how to fix it?
The Market is not stored on the SD card, so upgrading the card would do nothing to it.
Are you sure you formatted the new card first? Are you sure you copied EVERYTHING from the old card to the new one?

i did not format it. I thought android does that automatically when there's a new card inserted? And yes i copied everything, or at least i copied everything that showed up in windows explorer when i plugged the phone in.
I'm going to try restoring a backup from a few days ago to see if that resolves the problem with my missing apps.
I should mention I'm not using the default rom - i have Evio installed. Not sure if that's moved the market to the sd card or not.
nevermind about the missing apps - i tried wiping the cache and dalvik and that fixed it. Now i just need to know what the proper method is for swapping cards. Although maybe the other card will work now that i fixed the missing apps issue.
I think just copying everything to the new card will do it. I did last week and so far my evo is running fine.
Format the new card and it will add the necessary folders then transfer the old stuff to your computer and then to the new card. Had to reinstall angry birds and andro zip but all my save data was still there:>D

I didn't even have to format the card. Just doing a copy was enough. Either android auto-formats the card when it detects a new one, or copying all the files was enough and a format wasn't needed. Apparently the problem i had with the cache was not related to the card. I guess the cache got corrupted some how.

Safe SD format/Clockwork Update/reflash procedure?

I'm currently on CM7 which I flashed over Nightly #38. I'm liking it, but I get some reboots and stuff, so I want to do a fresh flash after wipe.
However, I'd also really like to format my SD card to clear any bad sections on it and hopefully prevent it from getting corrupt (just as a housecleaning item). I figure I also might as well update to the latest clockwork recovery at the same time.
Could someone put down some instructions on how to do these things safely, or post a link? I'm not sure if formatting the SD card will screw with Clockwork recovery, or what order I should do things in, how to do them, etc. REALLY don't want to brick my phone in trying to do the right things!

1 - Download ROM to SD Card.
2 - Copy the contents of your SD card to your computer, so you have a backup!! Very important!!
3 - Update to the latest CWM recovery.
4 - You can have your phone format your SD card, or if your computer has a SD card reader you can format it from your computer. I've done both, with no ill effects.
5 - After the format, boot up the phone and copy the SD card backup that you copied to your computer back to your SD card. Reboot into recovery, and flash the ROM you want to install.
Good luck!
EDIT: The one issue I did run into was when I formatted my new SD card with my computer. I copied my files over from my computer to my SD card, put the SD card into the phone, then booted it. The phone deleted (maybe reformatted...?) the contents of the SD card, and that is why making a back up is so important! I was able to just copy the files back over, and that issue was a one-and-done issue.
Thank you, but I should have been a little clearer in my OP...
I'd really like to just start from scratch with my SD card, i.e. clean it off and start from new. I will be sure to back up the current files that are on there, but there's a lot of crap I don't need and rather than sort through it all, I figure I'll just format and then add stuff back on that I find I need. How do I do that safely? Are things that MUST be present at all times for Clockwork to function, or whatever?
Also, why would I add the ROM on before formatting - won't the formatting just erase the file?
I probably was confusing here: I thought adding the ROM to the SD before formatting, you could then copy everything over off the SD card. You can certainly just d/l the ROM to your computer and copy it over that way too.
CWM needs the clockworkmod folder, which is where things live including any ROM backups you may have.
Depending on the apps you have installed, they may have created a folder. If you don't have those apps but have those folders, you can delete them if they don't contain anything you need. There are folders there that Android will create upon first boot with a freshly formatted SD card.
EDIT: I adjusted my prior post with *hopefully* steps that aren't confusing.

[Q] Problem installing 16gb card

I just bought a 16gb class 10 sd card. Now I am using the one that came with the phone. I thought I can copy and paste the files on the 8gig card to the 16 gig card and should be all set. I copied all files to the new card and the phone doesnt want to boot up. I believe to have a ext on the card that i am using now but I dont know if that matters. If I do have an ext or partition on the card, how can I find out? Any suggestions?? Thanks..
Format the new card, put it in the phone and boot up, then copy everything from the 8 gig
thank you...I will try that..
Let the PHONE format the card. then pull the card and copy only the selected needed files. nothing more. :-D but yeah. a class 10 card IS WHAT SHOULD have been installed in our phones. our phone doesn't support the max speed. but it is truely faster even when connected to the USB port. I tested before and after and did see a difference in speed. But for the normal use, it won't help. lol
its worked....Thank you
"...then pull the card and copy only the selected needed files. nothing more."
Could you (or anyone knowledgeable) elaborate on what the "needed files" are, please? I'm asking because my SD card just recently crapped out on me. Entirely. Crapped. Out. I couldn't even get my pc to pick it up w/ an adapter. However, the good news is that I recently did a nandroid backup and had copied it, along with all of my pics and vids to my PC.
So, I now have a brand new SD card and a folder on my PC that contains my recent nandroid, a bunch of pics, and some vids, but nothing else. I never bothered moving all of the other files to my PC. In hindsight, I guess I was prepared for a flashing fail, but not for an SD card fail
My question is this: What additional files do I need to move to my sd card to keep operating smoothly, including future rom-flashing and nandroid backups?
Do I need to add a recovery file (Amon RA or CWM) manually? Or can I just re-download CWM from the market and flash alternate recovery? What other important files am I forgetting?
Thanks.

Few queries about htc z!?!

I have been loading all the roms and just realised my sdcard is getting filled.. therefore can format my sdcard?? Will it remove the rom or change the S-off or brick my phone??
Can replace my 8gb sdcard with 32gb sdcard? Should i do anything extra to make sure it remains rooted?
Can force close be caused only by software issues or even hardware?? I ask this coz a month back i had dropped my phone and it did not start for couple of hours. After that i have being having issues with many roms and many apps esp market force closing and the clockwork recovery not flashing properly...

Your OS is installed in the internal storage of your device, not your SD Card. Formatiing your SD Card does nothing to your ROM at all. Force Closing is most probably a permission issue. Try Fix Permission in ROM Manager.

Do you mean you are keeping the ROM files, and/or nandroid backups on your SD card? After you flash a ROM, you can get rid of the zip file. Or copy it to your desktop computer, if you think you might want it again in the future.
Similar thing with nandroid backups. I usually just keep the most recent one on my SD, and move the rest to my PC.
Some apps save data to the SD card. If you want to upgrade to a larger SD, just copy the files you need (or think you might need) to your desktop computer from the SD, then copy them to the new SD card, and swap the cards out. Upgrading the SD card is that simple.
