It wasn't working in UD so I flashed CM RC3 and it doesn't work. I went to the Google Labs website to download it and I'm using v2.0.8pre1. I'm not using the latest because it says experimental. I just want to add that I did enable SU permissions for the app.
Here is what I get when I enable it:
It starts but it doesn't show any Download/Upload activity. I'm using 3G not 4G. My Wi-Fi DOES work because I use it at home everyday. The internet on the phone does work but the tethering doesn't.
I looked at the log and it says:
Starting access point-Failed
Activating WIFI interface-Failed
Enabling NAT-Done
Enable IP forwarding-Done
Tethering now running-Done
Can someone load a reliable APK on this thread or tell me what's wrong?
Have you tried the native tether app in cm? It works just fine...
I switched back to UD so I don't know if this has a native tether app. I didn't notice a native tether app in CM. Where was it located?
the wifi tether app from the market works fine for me on salvage-mod. i could never use it on any cm7 version.
That's what I was using and it didn't work. I see the native tethering option in UD but when I go to enable it I get an error that pops up where the check box is.
Could it be related to the kernel I'm using? I went on his forum but it's nothing like XDA. In the changelog I didn't see any recommended kernels to use so I'm using
UD v3.2.0
Kernel: [email protected] #1

Just go to settings > wireless & networks. If um is cm based its in there too. Also the native tether app for sense roms can also be found here. Hope that helps. Also in the past I've noticed that the wireless tether app on the market is usually behind the version on the authors Google case page. Have you checked there for a newer version? Link: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I did and the most recent is experimental. It didn't work and I tried the 2 under the most recent and they didn't work either. Could it be kernel related? The native tethering in UD doesn't activate. When I tick the check box it says error.
That's because you tried using wifi tether. Restart your phone and this time do not run it. Try the the native app after your reboot without running wifi tether and everything should be fine. Happened to me too

What are you guys using for wifi tether? I can't get barnacle or wifi tether to work. I see the hotspot but cannot connect. I am rooted and running a custom rom.
There is a file that can be edited to enable the built in tethering option. It's a simple change from 1 to 0 though right now I can't remember what it was that I changed. If you want to do this let me know and I can look it up. You will need to purchase an app sqlite to edit the database.

I use wifi-tether and it works fine. not available in the market. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether. You will also need to allow installation of non-market applications in settings under applications
Another way to enable the built in tethering without any carrier annoyances is to go into the hidden menu of the phone. Install an app called Any Cut. Run it and create a new shortcut to 'connectivity.' said shortcut will appear on your home screen. Open the and uncheck 'entitlement mode.' reboot phone and you're set. Both wifi and usb tethering work without paying extra.

Thanks, I have been having issues with builtin tether and other tethering software on the market. ( I just gaveup)
at first I saw your post and went tot the market and downloaded the app (version on the market was 2.0.7)
and it failed and didn't work.
followed your link on google and tried the latest beta.
it works like charm
thanks!!!!
Have you tried unchecking the entitlement box in the hidden menu?
Sorry, i should read before posting
is this still an issue of this NOT working with Jelly Bean....?
if it is working, it's NOT for me....on an ROM I have used....
is there settings that I need to "fix" for it to work, or use the app "WiFi Tether" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wifi.hotspot&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS53aWZpLmhvdHNwb3QiXQ..
if there are certain settings that can be used for any of these to work....please tell me step by step.....thnx
Built in tether has worked for me on every jb rom I've used. I have read that using a third party WiFi app breaks tether all together in jb. Currently using Jellybro by fitsnugly and using the tether as I type this without issue.
Tether does work, i use it often.
Try Bugless Beast. Post this in the correct forum next time.

no frkn way......I am DL this rom now via CWM and I shall see....
I have tried every jb rom but not above mentioned, I shall try.......
I dont know if its my hp laptop, but I changed over to rom mentioned above, I clicked on the yellow built in wifi, waited for it to say is running, I clicked on my laptop to see if "android Tether" came up as a wireless connection....-----it did NOT show up.....
I have not tried it w/ my ps3 yet or my wifes *phone.....
Dont know what "gives"
anyone got any ideas....the laptop used to show this particular wifi tether when I was on ICS...(thats why i was wondering if its my particular phone
CDMAgnex not sending out the vibe to wifi....when alot of you are saying that almost all jb roms that yous are on, do not have difficulty with this wifi
Clueless
I tried, Barnicle, FoxFi and the wireless tether app for rooted phones.
NOTHING WORKS.
I did switch to the unlimited plan, as well as my father, and 2 friends, ALL of which have no issues at all.
I thought it was my rom, so I switched roms last night and still no go.
I'm starting to get worried here.
Foxfi- "wifi mode has failed on your phone please use bluetooth mode instead (still doesn't work)"
Barnacle "WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0:invalid argumnet"
Wireless Tether "Tethering started with errors"
WTF ??? Everything else with the phone works fine
Anyone?
interesting, you even did a full wipe and installed another ROM?
have you tried tethering with native and then use firefox instead or a useragent for chrome?
It's a problem for me too. Right now I use the native app from tmobile and it works fine - confirmed working with jedi mind, infamous and dark side

im sure most of us don't have tethering allowed but we still use the native feature lol. You should try it out. then use firefox on the computer. if you want to use chrome you need to download user agent switcher extension.
Read carefully because im only posting this once!
Unlimited plan does not include tethering meaning when t-mobile reads you're using a desktop useragent it reads on the DNS servers and blocks your connection to the site redirecting you to their add hotspot crap.
Easy fix
Download wifitether app the original from back in the day! Requires root!
In settings on the newer betas you have the ability to change the DNS servers
All you have to do is search for whatever DNS servers you want to use and add a primary and secondary. I use verizons
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
You can search for others but they seem to be the fastest for me.
Now share this and repost it if you want.
What this does is it enables wifi tether and overides the default DNS server from t-mobile allowing outside sites to report to our desktops.
Enjoy.

Well I have read through the development thread of ktoonsez and task's kernel and rom and even used yes search in the thread and have come up with no answers. When I was on ICS I had no issue with Wi-Fi tethering but since I have moved to this rom I can create the hotspots however there is no internet connection. I found a couple posts in the thread using the search but they seem to be gone from the actual thread since after I click the link it's not on the page that pops up.
I am currently running both the ktoonsez & task rom and kernel (latest versions) on a bell I747m with MVLDLK4 modems on MTS . I don't have a tethering plan but when I was on ICS it didn't seem to matter. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

If you are talking about using the WIFI Tether app Jelly Bean essentially broke it. The devs are working on a fix. XDA member Treve has a mod that will get it to work though. His OP is posted in the Verizon forums but I can assure you it works on our AT&T phones. I used it last night. There is an issue worth noting that once you tether and untether your WIFI won't work again until you clear cache and reboot. It is a minor annoyance IMO but I threw it out there so no one freaks out.
If you are talking about straight stock tethering I haven't run into the issue myself. My stock tether/WIFI hotspot works flawlessly. After updating to 4.1.1 did you do a full data wipe? If not I would recommend it. I ran into all kinds of bugs after doing the Kies update. Battery drain, Google Now had a learning disability, etc.
Do a google search for Treve WIFI Tether mod for the link and give it a go. In the OP he says that secure tethering doesn't work. It does. Used it last night as a test.
Also if you have a rooted phone already download mobile odin. You can have the app reflash the stock .tar and inject everoot and SuperSU. That's what I generally do when a new OTA is released. Hasn't failed me yet. Any questions shoot me a PM.

Wifi Tether works. The old version stopped working for me after upgrading to JB, but I downloaded a different beta. You have to download the TrevE Mod, wifi_tether_v3_3-pre2.apk.
Also I had to change some settings.
Device profile is set to GS3.
Fallback tether is enabled.
Send Netd Max Client Cmd is enabled.
Both Wifi-driver reload options are enabled.
MSS clamping is enabled.
Routing fix is enabled.
This works for me. Sometimes no data will come through but restarting my phone fixes the problem. I'm rooted on stock JB.

Pardon if it's been addressed already. Searched with no results.
Any wi-fi tethering fix available? Can't seem to get it going on this or CM10.1. Think I might have to reflash an older version. Tethering is crucial at work.
Simple search in either the CM10.1 thread or the AOKP thread you'd see its currently not working..

There are some ROMs that have the patch in place
Me, I use a Jellybean based ROM and just use the bluetooth tether [as it uses less battery]
open settings on phone and tablet or bluetooth device [get USB adapter if laptop doesn't already have it]
pair the devices
tap the more button in settings on phone tap tethering tap the checkbox for bluetooth tether
WiFi Specific
Install a Jellybean based ROM visit settings [I enjoy ParanoidAndroid] more> tethering and hotspot>Wi-Fi tether.
If need look in market for FoxFi it is free and does WiFi tethering via an app if you prefer that.
