Just wondering, a few questions - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so to start off I have a few questions that have been bothering me since I got my epic a few months ago,
1. I had a HTC hero that i came form and while on it they referred to the baseband as the radio for the phone here its the modem, correct me if im wrong but they are the same thing but the question is why it that with the hero they were able take the radio(modem) from other phones and use it in the hero after a little modding but we just use what ever sprint/samsung gives us with the new releases? is this because of the 4G?
2. Wireless tether no i know on my hero I just used the wireless tether for root users and it worked not special version was need, on my epic after rooting before looking to a custom roms for the epic I just used the wireless tether for root users getting 3g and 4g tethering no problem after inputing a costom rom I found that a well what i feel is a clunkier version of wireless tether was installed that had to use sprint hotspot to work and I had troubles connecting to it so i tried use the normal wireless tether and well it didnt work tons of FCs. why is this? how does using a custom rom break it from working when stock rooted works
3. odin? why do we use this half way? From what I can tell its powerful makes things easy if you are next to the computer so why is there not a odin for every rom it would make a nice fresh install super easy, no wipe wipe wipe flash pay wipe again reflash(not that its like that every time but we have all been there or at lest most of us). now Im not saying update zips are bad but when im installing a new rom IM at my computer and if something goes wrong with it i just restore a backup i made. now I do keep themes, kernals, and mods and the rom on my flash card just incase I really need it and sometimes i know I not at a computer that has odin or im in hurry and flash things on the go.
4. after installing a custom rom (SynErgYRoM) that was to enable usb tether i started getting RNDIS driver install prompts but windows could never find a driver. I redownload and reinstalled the samsung drivers but it still would not find it both windows xp and 7, I went back to the stock rom for my wireless tether troubles but i still get the driver prompt why is this and were can i get the drivers?

1. Yes baseband and radio are the same thing. I'm not famaliar with the hero
2. Wifi tether is different than wireless tether in that it supports infrastructure. That is why it uses the sprint hotspot app
3. Odin is an awesome tool used to flash stock roms and is used if you screw up somerir have to take your phone back to sprint. It completely cleans data and the phone is just like it was out of the box. It can be used to flashed custom roms if the developer made a flashable tar bit since a lot of people don't like to use Odin its just easier to flash custom roms thru recovery
4. Not famaliar with synergy rom or USB tether. I just know the kernel has to be rndis compatible to use wired tether
Sent From My Evo Killer!

Thanks Musclehead84 for the answer to a few of my questions 2, 3, and part of 4 I guess having infrastructure support would be nice to support multiple connection I will have to look into getting it working on my phone and I can now see why devs dont want to spend the time to make the flashable tar if most dont like to use it. Also I see why I still get the prompts I am running a custom kernel and it most likely has the RNDIS support in it too
So im still looking for answers to
1. why it that with the HTC phones (like the hero or evo) they are able take the radio(modem) from other phones and use it in the that HTC phone (like the hero or evo) after a little modding but we just use what ever sprint/samsung gives us with the new releases? is this because of the 4G?
and
4. Were can I get the RNDIS drivers for windows xp and 7?

[Q] what are your thoughts on the update? is it stable?

are their any problems with it? if so are they fixable? FYI im talking about the leaked froyo update. Also is their more then one version of it? IVe been thinking about updating and could use some input as to what I should do. Any help is appreciated.
Hey bro I wasn't being a **** towards you on your last post. I was just trying to tell you that it was in the wrong section. Welcome to the.forums and this is a great place if you want to learn. I'm on the update now running bonsai rom with ext4 and its very stable. I get better battery life than eclair and everything works. The only issue I have is occasionally when I make a call I don't hear it ring till I toggle speakerphone on/off. That's a common bug. Other than that its an awesome leak and I'm gonna be on it till the official release and update it manually. I would Def. Update if I were you. The best way in my opinion is to use Odin to get a fresh install and make sure you have a GPS lock before you flash so your GPS will work on froyo. Good luck

Its cool. could you provide me link to all the things listed? assuming its not against the rules. Preferably the best version of the update or clarification of what it is would be helpful.
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-update-sprint-epic-4g-to-android-2-2. Use the second set of instructions. Download Odin and the full tar file. Put the phone in download mode by turning it off and then holding the 1key on the keyboard and the power button. If it's in dl mode you will see a guy like shoveling stuff. Open Odin and put the full dk28 tar file (make sure it's the correct size like 289mb) in the PDA section. Make sure first that Odin recognizes the phone so there should be COM that pops up in the box on the upper left corner with some numbers(don't worry bout what the number is). So plug the phone into the computer after Odin is up not before. After Odin recognizes the phone go to the PDA section not phone but PDA and plug the full Dk28 file into this. Make sure only auto reboot is the only thing checked on the left side and DON'T USE THE PIT FILE. it can cause Odin to fail and it's not needed for rom flashing. Once everything is ready hit start. You will see a progress bar on the phone and computer. Once you hit start it should take around 3-4 mins to complete and don't unplug the phone till it's done. If for some reason it says it failed or it just hangs at a certain step just keep trying. Sometimes it takes me a couple tries. One more thing before you shut your phone off to put it on dl mode one up aps and turn your gps on and get a lock. That way your gps will work once it's flashed. Good luck. Any questions just ask but you can follow the guide n the website I gave you the only thing that I told you that is different than the website is they say to use the pit file. remember don't you dont need it.
KEY PIECE OF ADVICE MISSING HERE. before you flash that file rename out taming the .md5 extension off. Also when he says only have reboot checked, means un check that box labeled f.reset its easy to overlook. Now the pit file, normally I don't use it but this is changing complete os version not just an eclair update I would go ahead and use it. Its just a map for odin to use when partitioning the install and with froyo for sure the modem has been moved around on a diff sector. This time I would use it. Best of luck and read over all the directions before you do it to make sure you are comfortable with it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
You can rename the file but I've never had a problem with using the tar file with. Md5. Odin accepts it but I guess some people have had problems with it. Also I didn't use the.pit going to dk28 and my.phone works fine. I've never used the pit file. Only time its needed is for.flashing kernels and modem files bit it's not gonna hurt if you use it. I've actually had the pit.file make my flash fail before the first time I tried to use the pit file.

Thanks Guys! One more question. Could you tell me how to also root my phone after this update so I can use my phone as a wireless hotspot? Im also curious as to what the benefits of rooting are and what I can do once im done. Hopefully I dont sound like a idiot ,but I am needing to educate myself more.
Sure I can help you. Once you get to 2.2 like I Saif you have 2 options. To keep you rfs filesystem or switch.to ext4. I.recommend going.to ext4. It will make your phone faster and alot.of rom developers have switched to ext4 so.if you want.the newest rom updates you need it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612. That's the link for the one click.root plus clockwork version 3 that will convert you to ext4.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388 . That's the link for the one click root and cwm. If you want to stick with the stock filing system. I have the latest version of bonsai rom installed with ext4 filing system. Let me know what you decide to go with. If you go with ext4 and cwm3 it only supports edify scripts to flash but a lot of zips have been converted to edify. Just let me know if you go with cwm3 and I'll explain this in more detail for you.

Will it change the stock layout/menu of my phone? or erase anything? Also Im assuming a rom is somthing you load on your phone like a game with a emulator. But what exactly do these roms do?
Also last question and im off to work on this. I heard this update can also increase my battery life is that true?
As far as a rom erasing all your data yes when you flash the rom you boot into clockwork and you have to clear all data and cache before flashing so when your phone boots up you won't have any data there. It's like a brand new phone, but if you do a backup in clockwork and then after you erase all data and flash the rom you can do an advanced restore and restore all your data. It's a really nice feature to have. As far as a rom losing the stock look it depends on the rom. Some roms look stock and others don't. The best thing you can do is go to the development section and open up the different roms and look at the pics of what it looks like to have that rom on your phone and also look at the change logs and it will tell you what is on the rom. If you want to keep the stock look bonsai rom v1.1.4 leafless version looks pretty stock and if you get tired of that you can then flash the theme over top of the rom and it changes it up a bit. If you want I can post pics of my setup so you can see if you like it. I hope I answered your questions so you can understand it. As far as battery life I'm getting better battery life on dk28 But it will get even better when custom kernels come out for froyo and then they can under volt them. That won't happen till the ota comes out and the source code is released but yes I'm getting better battery life on froyo then I was on stock eclair. Also the good thing bout rooting is you can freeze or delete all of the bloatware that you don't use. For instance the sprint NASCAR app or whatever else that comes on the phone that wastes space. If you have any more questions just ask. When you decide to do this I can give you my google talk username and I can walk you thru the process and get you a nice rom setup on your phone. Just let me know. Later
Got it done. But now I can't find apps I need in the market place is teir any kind of fix for that?
Ok did you instal the drivers? If not let me know if you have a 32 or 64 bit and ill post them for you. Also if its a desktop try.the USB in the back closest to the motherboard. Also the stock cable sucks and you need to get another one. Radioshack has one or eBay. But you need the computer to recognize the phone or you can't root it either and install cwm. If you did install the drivers plug the phone in when its turned on and it should install them for you as long as you downloaded them. If you installed the drivers try turning on USB debugging ( settings-applications-development) and then plug the computer in and if the drivers are installed properly in the notification bar it would say USB connected and then USB debugging on. That means the phone and the computer can recognize each other

found the drivers and got the update installed but some of my apps just arent in the market place that I used to have. Is that normal? I was hoping to redownload mobile banking and cant find it.

Yeah that's normal I can't.remember why but when you flash a rom they will come back. There us a fix somewhere in the development section but if you flash a custom rom you'll be fine. Noe use.the one click root with cwm version 3 to convert to ext4.

at this point all i have done is install the leaked update. I want to be able to download the apps I cannot get to some of which may be protected in the marketplace. Is their a link or way around this with out rooting or would i need to root to access them? also if I do root I want the same layout my menus have now so where can I find a walkthrough for this? thanks guys for your patience and help. ALSO UPDATE I want to go ahead with the root and ext.4 rom it and but i dont want my menus or anything to change whats the next ?or would they change?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848778. That will help you to fix why uoi are missing some apps. If you want yo ho to ext4 rom then I suggest bonsai Mammon rom v 1.1.4 leafless. This rom has the stock look but with extra performance added. Just run the one click root with.clockwork mod version 3 to convert to ext4 then flash the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612. That's Tue.root you have to run. Here's the rom I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869295
update I placed ext 4 on here and rooted it. Now how do I apply the market fix and im done for a while.
I cant seem to find the folder to apply the fix

[Q] Moving from WM6.5 to Epic 4G, suggestion?

Let me first tell you about myself.
1. I'm a geek.
2. I don't like programming that much, so I avoid it. I learn stuff to get by, but yes I avoid it. I have access to both XP & Linux, running it as a PDC server at home along w/ VPN server (ClearOS w/ modified bridge OpenVPN ).
Some background about myself that may help you answered my question, or pointing in the right correct direction. (no middle finger to the right.) And here is past experience on mobile device.
I have used Nokia 770 and N800, fun to hack back then but it's pretty useless now. I had SERO 500 , which I just recently upgraded to SERO Premium 500. I have been using HTC TP2 w/ Energy ROM. It has been good, granted TP2 is an older phone w/ older Qualcomm CPU. Energy ROM did help a lot, along w/ a few tweak, I manage to keep the battery to last pretty long and upon boot up I got about 70% memory left to use. So, I'm not exactly new to the custom ROM myself. That said, I'm new to the Android phone and custom ROM. I have been reading in the past 2 weeks deciding between Epic 4G and EVO Shift 4G. Well, I end up w/ Epic 4G as a final choice. Already ordered the phone, but still waiting for it. So, I don't have Epic 4G as off right now. But I would like to start playing w/ it once I get a hold of it. That's why I end up here asking for some wisdom in this forum.
After doing some research, I think I think get the basic concept of flashing custom ROM on a new Epic phone. If I got it wrong, let me know.
prep step 0. get USB drivers.
1. root it, 2 steps root?
2. install CWM3 for recovery.
3. flash new ROM, appearance each chef have difference instruction for the install. That's where it start confusing me.
Few things that are unclear to me, should I update PRL prior to rooting it and flash new ROM or after? Or should I even put DK28 on it prior to start rooting it? I'm guessing a no on 2nd one, as it's not necessary.
Now, rough question, what ROM is close in term of the way it package that most closed to the Energy ROM. I'm leaning toward either Nebula or Bonsai. Since Epic is only on Sprint only, I'm sure some of you have use TP2 or might have even used Energy ROM in the past. If you haven't, I'm sure you know where to look for reference. Again, what I very looking for is a Froyo ROM(if not Gingerbread) that's clean, lean, snappy and stable. In fact I don't even care if the Samsung TouchWiz is totally removed. I even think I might like Touch Flo interface better, but I suppose I won't have it. I think I have read enough to know where to find the TouchWiz apk(s) and remove it, so that's not a big problem.
Welcome to android your steps are 1.get drivers 2 dl one click root plus cwm. Once you have it rooted with cwm you can start flashing. If you want to go to the froyo leak then flash the upgrade first then start the root process. If you go with froyo, which I love it and I have bonsai rom and it works perfect, you have some choices when rooting. If you want to stay with the stock Rfs filing system use the one click with cwm v2.5. If you want to run ext4filing system then run the one click root with cwm3. This new clockwork will convert your filing system to ext4 for you. My setup is in my sig and is my favorite. It's up to you to pick the rom you like the best. Make sure before you root turn your USB debugging on. Good luck and welcome to android.
In addition to what was posted, Nrgz is a great chef. I used his stuff for quite some time when I had my TP2.
That being said.. WinMo and Android are 2 different animals.
I think you'll find that you're going to flash each ROM and play with it for a few days to determine which one you prefer.
They are all very nice in their own right. Some of us have favs. The neat thing about android vs WinMo is that after you flash a ROM in Winmo, it's a big pain in the ass to set your device back up (if you weren't using custom scripts).. with android, it's much much easier and can be completed within a couple minutes.
I think you'll enjoy that aspect of it.
Welcome to Android
I'm making the same transition as you, long live the TP2. I followed the how-to recommended by the wiki, but a lot of that is actually a waste of time at this point, except as a learning experience. The steps that actually got me ROMed (I'm assuming you'll pick an Ext4/DK28 ROM:
1. install 32-bit drivers on Windows
2. put phone into debug, connect
3. flash DK28 to phone using ODIN
4. copy zip for ROM of choice to root of sdcard
5. run cwm3 to change file system, root device
6. flash with custom ROM while in recovery
From what I understand, only steps 4 and 6 will have to be repeated when trying other ROMs. Wifi tethering isn't working for me on ViperROM, so I think I'll try something else.

[Q] A rooting question?

I'm a noob to the S3 development. It is configed for me a lot now. I dont want to have to reset my phone and have to do everything all over again. I have stock 4.1.2. All I want is to be able to have wifi tether and keep the stock rom. Will rooting it erase everything, and I will have to start back fresh, because when I had an HTC it did. Last question, when Sprint comes out with more stock roms as in updates, I know I would have to flash instead of doing them OTA which I know you can't do, will it restart/erase the phone when I flash those new stock roms on in the future?

Let's tackle this question one piece at a time:
Rooting: "Getting Root" will not reset anything on your phone. You can go ahead and Root it and when you turn it back on most everything will be exactly the same as you had it before. You'll have a custom recovery (CWM or the recommended TWRP) and root access, but it won't format anything off your phone (apps, settings, etc.)
Wifi Tether: As far as I'm aware, you'll have to flash a custom ROM in order to get wifi tether working. I haven't flashed a TW ROM in a while (been sticking with AOSP 4.2.2 Roms for a bit), but I know that Freeza typically puts together a really nice ROM that is really close to stock. I don't think the one I linked has Wifi tether on it. There's also Kennyglass123, who put together The People's ROM (TPR), which I really liked and includes wifi tether. Also, with TPR, you can easily use Morphology to do all your customization.
The only thing about using custom ROMs is that the best procedure is to do a "full wipe" (factory reset, cache, dalvik) before flashing the ROM. The good news is that there are many programs available to help you get your programs/settings back up and running. I personally use Titanium Backup, but ROM Toolbox Pro also has this capability as well as a lot of other cool customization features. My only warning is that trying to restore system apps (the RED ones in Titanium Backup) can mess things up for your phone if you're switching between TW and AOSP or between versions of Android.
OTA Updates: Once you're rooted, you won't be able to flash OTA updates without going completely back to unrooted stock. The good news is that this process is relatively easy, just some Odin commands. The better news is that with the XDA community, you only have to wait a couple of days before they've come up with updated ROMs that include the OTA updates. Freeza is particularly speedy when it comes to that.
Last Note: I know flashing ROMs and "starting over" with your phone can be a daunting experience, but I've found that custom ROMs are the way to go. Nowadays, they're extremely stable, get amazing battery life, and include customizations that can really make the phone "your own." When I first got into flashing ROMs, I stayed really close to stock, but now I'm really enjoying AOSP ROMs such as Slim Bean, Liquid Smooth, and my current ROM, Carbon.
Hope I've answered your questions!
Thank You very much!!!

To add on to the above, theres the TreveMod Wifi tether app that you can use on any rom, its specifically modded to work with the Galaxy S3
And yes, like he said, it can be overwhelming, we've all been there...but once you get started, there are some really cool roms out there, you just gotta find what it is you look for and what features you want
But trust me, you picked an awesome device to get started with
Good luck!
Oh and one last thing, do NOT flash roms/mods made for the international versions, or for other carriers. Chances are that you will either bork some functionality or brick your phone

Here is the link to TrevE's wifi app over in the Verizon SG3 Section. The late November version has been verified to be working on Sprint Stock (but rooted) MA6 roms. I haven't personally used it (don't have 4G in my area and the 3G is too slow to tether with), but others have and said that it works. It's also the app/mod that all the TW ROMs (with tethering baked in) are based off of.
Hope this helps!

Newly Rooted. (Issue)

So, just rooted my phone, all seems to have gone well on the device itself. SuperSU is on, and all around it appears that it is rooted. But, after rebooting the phone, closing Odin and trying to reconnect the phone to the PC, I notice I am getting an error about the connectivity of the phone, along with a "missing device ID" icon.
Later, on the phone, it seems to have said it cannot communicate with the PC. and was prompting me to install Keis Air etc.. I tried reinstalling the Samsung drivers, and I only get the "Missing device ID", but no error message saying my device was not recognized this time 'round.
Quite certain I followed the option 2 steps ofered in the Dev section by Simplelife(?). And I'm also certain this isn't normal. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
Off topic Question. Why is there no detailed tutorial on how to install a custom ROM from start to finish for newbies? Would greatly help. Scattered ROM installations on the net that aren't of the same background as the Jedi series of custom ROMS seem to have different requirements for what to do for a few steps
Try a different usb port and If that doesn't help, try to download Mskip toolkit 3.0 drivers (being sure to un install all previous drivers) before trying different usb ports...
Also, try to turn on/off USB debugging from phone phone settings, or even powering off phone and pc/laptop
If after all this, probably save Mskip drivers for last, then let us know

Thanks for the reply bud, I had managed to figured out a solution that appears to be as easy as rebooting the PC. Did a reboot and now it's working fine once again. *shrug*
Also, I'd agree there isn't a complete guide for newbies... based on what I can surmise from your question...
As far as the difference between Jedi roms (and really I'd suggest even flashing the various ptmr3 tmo versions to gain confidence and understanding with the different instructions)
JEDI XX and JEDI Master are based off Touchwiz (same as stock), and similarly to any of the other TW ROMs, flashing instructions are basically identical to each other
JEDI CM is based off AOSP, and like any of the other AOSP/AOKP/etc custom Roms available, these various roms are flashed very similarly to the TW ROMs. However some differences do exist. Like AOSP/AOKP/etc require a separate GAPPS zip to be flashed on top of the rom during initial flash.
Also some roms/apps/functions require/suggest certain kernels in order to work, or work better, so be aware of any kernal requirements (some may require stock kernal, some this kernal, some that)
Make sure you have all your originals backed up and nandroid, follow the OP, use the adequate version of TWRP/CWM, read the OP'S and ask questions (in the appropriate places of course) before getting in too deep (ie don't go flashing non tmobile roms unless you know exactly what your doing or else you can lose your imei/radio/modem/efs/nv for good

Totally. I get the basic jist of things. But I imagine I've a few more things to learn. I've my phone rooted with Nandroid and App2zip installed. I intend to install the latest Jedi 11. I understand this is from the international version. Would CWM recovery be able to install/flash this ROM? I have it installed just waiting to download the new files (would be nice if I could find one that could work from Odin) before I make backups. I'll do all that tomorrow. I have a feeling having a custom ROM will help solve(hopefully) some of the problems I'm having with the T-Mobile default one.
Twrp would be better than cwm IMO.

[Q] Haven't done custom ROM/Kernal in a while, lost touch and need advice.

I used to flash all my phones in the past...Moment, Epic, friends phones, custom baked a few of my own ROM's using 7zip, etc...but it's been a few years and I feel like I've fallen outta touch. Currently the only thing I've done is CF Auto Root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956180 so that I can run TrevE Mod Wifi Tethering - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999156 and then Hot Audio Mod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931970. I know these are minor, but I swear I've fallen outta touch on how to do bigger things, so even trying to flash a new modem and stock ROM via ODIN v1.85 hasn't seemed to help me get rid of root so that I can install 4.3.
At this point, I'm looking for guidance on how to COMPLETELY erase everything on the phone and start it from scratch. I wanna remove anything and everything I may have done w/ the phone over the past year or so and make it brand new as if it came fresh outta the box. I'm assuming I have to do all this from ODIN, but I'm going to be honest here...I'm hoping someone will hold my hand via accurate step-by-step, post links like I have done above, give Flashing for Dummies directions (some of these threads and their OP's are like reading German to me nowadays) and overall help me get to even a stock 4.1.2 so that I can run the 4.3 update either via OTA or ODIN flashing.
I've considered doing custom a custom ROM and Kernal, but this is the first Android I've had in years where I don't feel the need to run custom anything, overclocking, etc. About the ONLY thing I didn't like about CF Auto Root is I couldn't do things like using ROM Toolbox to change the boot screen, using SDX Removal Tool to remove useless stock apps I never used (I'm guessing mostly because it's a Android 2.X app vs using it on a 4.x phone), etc. All in all I've been completely content w/ my 4.1.2 the way it is, I just want a 100% clean slate when running 4.3, reroot to run a WiFi Tethering app, be able to delete stock apps finally and that's really it. So...anyone got 10 min to post some links, write me some instruction and help a brother out

Welcome back! Use TWRP for total wipe. (Including system) Get a stock 4.1.2 ROM from SamMobile and flash it via ODIN. It would be (should be) unrooted and totally out of the box Note 2. Be careful about the ROM u download though. Make sure it's for your carrier. Do a normal OTA, (don't recommend it though, it has Knox), use CF-Auto Root. You'll end up with a tripped Note 2 rooted. (Warranty would be lost.) (Can't reset counter, can't downgrade)

TWRP: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 (get latest for your phone and flash it via ODIN.)
SamMobile: http://www.sammobile.com/ (can't provided exact download link, you'll have to search for yourself.)
CF-Auto Root: there's a thread on XDA on it, I think it was on the Note 2 Original Android Development forums.
Merry Christmas!
