Sleep of Death - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got this Sleep of death problem along with a microSD "card error checking problems",so I tought that replacing the card would solve my problem. So I got rid of the "stock" one and I got a 8Gb SanDisk,4-class.But after that, the Sleep of death was still there, even after chaning 3 ROMs.So,after reading a few threads from other phones I saw that one solution is to format all partitions with a special program, because a simple format wouldn't be enough as data wouldn't be deleted 100% from a simple format resulting in errors etc.As I couldn't find one software to work on Desire,I just used the format option in recovery. So,I did format the /data /system /boot etc partitions for ~5 times. Now,this screen of death problem occurs only once each day(before it was like 3-4 times a day).
Anyone knows a better solution for this problem?

i was having those sd card erros checking for problems error. what i did to fix it was connect via disk mount, right click the drive, open properties, then click check disc. tyou pc will run some tests on the sd card. should take a minute or 2. when its done, mine said found issues on card and fixed them. i then reran it to confirm and the 2dn tie it said my card was ifne. had no issues since. but as far as the sleep of death as u put it, ive never heard of this issue. my advice to u is find your service providers RUU and reflash to stock. ive had issues with sim card errors etc and a ruu flash fixed it all. then reroot, re s-off, repartition, and renandroid your stock root rom.worked 4 me. time consuming, but it fixed mt isuses

Another sleep of death post, I see I am not the only one.
Do what LINKSLOVESANDROID said, I was having the same problem 4-6 times a day. After error-checking it reduced to a couple, better than the previous situation!

I always did that error check via disk mount, and only after that my card was recognized again.Still,I changed the microSD,so no more card errors, but Sleep of death is still present. They seem to be 2 totally different problems.
I would like to try with a RUU,but I can't find the one for Orange Romania. It was carrier locked on Orange, but now it's unlocked.Which RUU should I try?

solved!
I was having the sleep of death issue as well, and I was advised to flash a RUU.
However, I didn't. What I did is take the sd card out of the phone, I put it in my mac, ran disk utility, erased all partitions (fat and ext2) and format the whole thing twice (we never know).
Then I flashed LeeDroid's rom (2.3d non a2sd) and now my phone works better than ever before! It's all solved!!!

Did you also have FCs???

I had,but it was because I had CM7 with A2SD,so when the microSD became corrupt, all apps from SD gave FCs.That can be easily solved with LINKSLOVESANDROID solved.
I still wonder if there is a method to "fully" format system, data, boto partitons,or if anyone can tell me which RUU to try.

And I found my answer.
All AOSP gingerbread ROMs had this bug.Looks like they were fixed in Oxygen and CM7

2gb card problem workaround question

I'm sorry if this question has been covered in the other thread allready but after hours of looking I still had no answer.
My Orbit with 2gb card has had the corruption problem a few times now and while we wait for a fix I was wondering if there was a easy'ish way to work around the problem for now.
The Thought i had was:
Partitition the card into 2 1gb partitions
Have the phone use partition 1 only
Backup partition 1 onto partition 2
In the event of corruption format partition 1 and copy partition 2 over to 1
I am wondering if it is possible to do this from the phone rather than from my pc as the last time I had corruption I was 250miles from home with no access to a pc to repair my card.
Thx Mr2T's
You can format partition on SD with FAT32 or FAT16 using Flash Format http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=851&associateid=17
and then resore your data to it.
Hi
From what I gather from the forum is that HTC said that the data corruption on the sd card happens when it tries to access files and it is switched off while it hasnt finished doing so. HTC recommends to set the Artemis to auto power after 1 minute ( allow it to switch itself off automatically instead of using the power button).
Yes, but this resolution decrease probablity of data corruption only...
Good luck
what causes the problem is the contacts connection.
it is easily sorted by placing the memory card in, make sure the gate is clicked down and does not pop back up, then make sure the sim gate is clicked in properly, then get a spare simcard (do not use cardboard etc.) and place it on top of the sim gate, then carefully put battery on top then back lid.
i have used this method for 2months now and not had a single problem with corruption
Thx for the replys
I have looked through the other thread and tryed adding a shim to the card for connection problems and setting the power off to 3 mins as HTC recomend more than 1 min but I was still getting the problem, so I was looking to find a way to get around the problem without been near my PC, at least as a short time fix until the problem is cured.
I suppose what I'm asking is
How do i partition the card into 2? Used wm5Storage and guide from this forum
Can my orbit access both partitions on 1 card? Seems i can
How do i format the partition if it becomes corrupt? Flash Format thx varvocel, not tryed yet
How do i restore from partition 2 to partition 1? Just use file explorer?
Thx all
Hi, you can read this website regarding "how to make partitions on SD cards" http://www.pocketpc-live.com/partition-sd-cards.html ......i havent tried it myself but it may work as your idea seems like a good workaround regarding the sd card corruption......let me know how you go with the partition....
I reformatted with the Fat type and sector size shown in the main post 3 weeks ago and haven't had any corruption since
I used to have to recover my card a couple of times a week and was always losing access to TomTom maps before I did this.
I had data corruptions even with partitions (FAT16, FAT32) - like other users. In my opinion there is no reliable resolution for now. Most often I see posts like "I have workaround and my SD OK from 2 weeks" and after some time - "Oh no, I've lost my data again".
Read the "Corrupt 2gb SD Card" threat...
Mr2ts - yes use WM5Storage, then format it (you can do this with PC).
Good luck
2GB Memory Card
I have also tried putting things under the sim above the sim, formatting FAT16/FAT32 and all to no avail. Good luck to anyone whose prepared to put up with this what can be a time consuming frustrating problem. Think I'm going to quote sale of goods act and get mine returned after 5 months...

Many people have also tried this and seen no improvement. I tried it myself, still corrupted, and HTC say that this isn't the problem. My has been fine after formatting FAT32 with an allocation size of 512, but whether this was the cure or not, who knows?
To OP - this problem has been seen with 1GB cards too, so partitioning is not likely to help.
I am only using 512Mb card that came with my Artemis, i tried switching it off using the power button everyday and I havent encountered any sd card corruption... can someone also tried this???
Some users reported their first data corruptions after long use of Artemis...
Thanks for all the replys, I thought I'd do a quick post to let you know what I've done and how its going.
I have managed to partition the card into 2 x 1gb partitions and installed the formating util for when it go's pear shaped and reloaded onto the 1st partition the software I use. I have made a backup onto the 2nd partition of the 1st and am now using my orbit as normal. So far no corruption but I think its just a matter of time so I'll post again when it fails and I have tryed to resore it.
The only problem I'm concerned with is that TomTom will not use the voices in the folder on the 1st partition, only if I place them in a folder on the 2nd which may lead to corruption of that one, if anyone knows a way of hiding the 2nd partition until I need to restore from it I would be most greatfull.
Mr2ts
yes, please keep us posted.....if ever you get the corruption again and you managed to restore it from the 2nd partition, pls show us the step by step of how you first of all partitioned the card etc etc....thanks

Froyo A2SD+ SD card corruption

Tons of new ROMs coming out now based on OTA and adding A2SD+. But one big issue. Quite a number of people have reported problems with corruption of their SD cards when setting the Desire into Disk mode and connecting it to a PC. I've read it the first time here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7463184&postcount=348
and I can confirm it is reproducible.
Regardless if connecting to Windows or Linux, the card gets corrupted. It does not matter if you properly eject the drive. The Desire will respond saying the SD card is Read Only, and the only thing that one can do is to repartition it to fix the card.
I don't know what A2SD+ application everyone uses in their ROMs but I expect it's all based on some common version like the one put in from ieftm. As this is a serious issue it would be great if all you ROM cooks could look into it and try to fix it. Alternatively it may be a good idea to produce non-deodexed versions that save a significant amount of memory when installed normally without A2SD+.
Thanks for considering
I have this problem aswell its a bit of a nightmare there are a few files on my sd card that I can't even delete using andexplorer or my pc. I think the only way would be to remove my card and format it. I have never had this problem before only when I started using the 2.2 rom.
Noticed it before, i took the SD card out and put it into a cardreader, couldnt do anything in windows, said it was read only. Access via USB cable worked though.
Not that much of a issue for me, I mainly transfer files via Wi-Fi anyway, but I guess thats the explanation for the read-only behaviour.
Happened to me today, however I restarted the phone and everything seems okay now... :/
edit: nope, connected the phone again, chose "charge only" and then disconnected. The notification about my card being corrupted occured again, tapped on it and it went away... Dont know what to think..
I have the same problem .. And now it seems like the SD card is totally corrupted. Its not even possible to do a format
Okay thats it... Doing the titanium backup, nand backup and flashing some rom w/o A2SD+... :/
Out of curiosity guys, did the corruption of the SD card occur to the stock SD card that came with the Desire? I had the same problem with the stock card..
It seemed to unmount 3 or 3 times over a week and the next thing I knew it totally died and could not even be reformatted.. Happened on stock 2.1 that came with my Desire.. after I swapped to me own class 6 8gb Transcend I never had the proble again.. Just gonna upgrade to 2.2 now.. *fingers crossed*
Oh and yes.. I use A2SD+ on Modaco's 3.1. But that was after that card got corrupted..
I'm using card that came with the phone.
I'm going to try another Froyo Rom, just OTA rom rooted and we'll see.
Edit: I made my ext3 partition with ROM manager, if it makes any difference...
God dammit!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747480
Yes its the card that came with the phone .. but it happen after i created the 512MB EXT3 Partition ... and I'm running this ROM : http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775&highlight=official it doesnt even use A2SD+
I dual boot my pc with windows 7 & ubuntu.... windows 7 scan and fix has repaired mine numerous times
I have class6 A-DATA 8GB and no problem. But with my last G1 i haved same card and with swapping goes to hell... I now correctly unmounting and disconnecting mobile from PC, after i save from PC to card. Flash have problems with writing.
This looks like a serious problem - it happened to me twice already. Devs, please have a look at this!
I have also had similar experience, SD card corrupt, yes it was the original card that came with the phone, EXT2 partitioned and using APSD+
Now why this happend is a mystery, but something I noticed when I tried the SD card in the PC - it was recognized, but said it must be formated, so I tried but it only saw it as a 32mb capacity!!! (it still would not format though - failed format..and since is no longer reconized at all..)
But, this made me think it "MAY" be something to do with the fact that when I did the Ext2 partition I seem to remember it also created a 32mb swap partition, or using Ext2 instead of Ext3. I have since learnt that it is advisable NOT to created a swap partition, so with my new SD card, after more reading about Ext partitions etc, I have only created only the Ext3 partion as I understand this is better than Ext2 and is less prone to corruption, and no swap partition and have had no problem since!
See this excellent post :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7458565&postcount=8
It would be interesting to have some input from one or two of the developers with knowledge in this field to get an idea why this happens, and how it can be prevented.
It is also possible the the SD card was going to become corrupt anyway... with or without the help of Ext? / APSD+ - it does happen!

my sd was corrupt using a 512MB ext3 partition without swap partition in SD card :/
Try in windows: start > run > chkdsk x: /f
where x = desire drive letter.
I believe i did this in recovery mode > mount usb.
That's what happens when you don't want to use Froyos own A2SD implementetion because "widgetz doesnt workzz on dat."
Apps are not meant to be on an external EXT partition.
Wait until ROMs like CM have built in A2SD+, these hacky shell scripts can cause serious problems for the SD card.

Windows can not access EXTx partitions. As such is unfortunately not possible that it could possibly repair a broken SD-ext partition A2SD+ uses.

I can confirm the corruption without any APSD+ ROM
I had a Stock Orange FR 2.1 ROM, and the 4Gb card that came with the phone get corrupted definitively (recognized as a 32mb capacity too, it has something to do with the Cylinder-head-sector combination).
Anyway, I'm going to try APSD+ with a class 2 PNY 16Gb, and tell you then if I get a corrupted card.
FYI, the Sandisk warranty is applicable for the original card: replaced in 5 days
I got some problems too with corruped files on my SDcard and had to format it. I'm thinking that from now i'll only mount my card to pc in recoverymode... maybe that is safe to do?

[Q] SD Card Unexpectedly Removed - ROM Related?

for some time I was using a Samsung 8GB SDHC Class 2 which came with the device.
I have made it a Goldcard, rooted the phone and installed Froyo. then I began to get SD Card Unexpectedly Removed errors after a few minutes of using an app instaled on SD (mostly when I tried to run ColorDict, which keeps dict data on SD). I am not sure, but I think this began to happen when I tried to upgrade to OTA 2.29 and "Red Triangle of Death" (lol) appeared... my Desire was getting unusable as it happened more frequently and required the phone to be powered off and the card to be taken out and insterted again. I tried formatting from Windows level, from phone level, checking for errors, bad sectors etc, but everything failed, so I bought Kingston 16GB SDHC Class 4. and, as you can expect, nothing really improved. well, maybe the errors were a little less frequent.
so I tried to change the ROM, yesterday I have flashed LeeDroid 2.3d No-A2SD, since then the error came twice - first when I tried to wipe sdext in recovery and about five minutes ago, while accessing the card with Root Explorer. I have to stress out that I use the SD intensively through the day as I install apps and test new games. so it seems that the appearence of that error is somehow related to ROM as normally it would happen much more frequently.
did anyone experience similar coincidence?
I have had the SD Card unmount itself randomly before with a custom ROM but it has been a one off. I just rebooted and it was working.
However, your problem is quite extensive. I guess you could just sort of leave it for a whole day not doing anything and see if anything happens. If so, then it could be a number of reasons. Reformat, check for errors (thoroughly), change your ROM to stock and test that out.

SD-Card Error - Round 2

Hey guys,
a few month ago, i created 2 threads here.
My sd-card simply stopped working and I couldnt find the issue, even replacing the slot did not help.
Today, suddenly, my bootloader recognized the card with a PC10IMG, just tried this one out.
I could upgrade, got to the newest radio, and android 2.3 (Virtous Sense 2) could use the sdcard.
But at first, wlan did not work, so i restarted the phone.
Now everything seems fine, except that after a few seconds, the SD-Card is "unexpectedly removed". or "damaged". I cannot format the card using the phone, even in recovery menu its unmountable after a few seconds. Example: I chose "install zip from sdcard", could find the rom on it, but when it started installing, the installation immediately aborted and after this, the sdcard wont answer anymore in any way. This is reproducable by simply formating the card again using the computer.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thx in advance..

Its possible the connections for the sd card slot are damaged or that you got a damaged replacement, or that you might have damaged it on installation. I'm leaning towards the connection on the main board being damaged in some way. it's strange that it is intermittent.

I dont think its a problem with our memory cards. Either the card slot that Samsung made is of very poor quality or it is a problem with the latest ICS firmware. There A LOT of people facing this problem out there including my cousin who is the only other person i know with an S3. Not only does his memory card slot disconnect and reconnect, it completely killed it, it does work anymore. In some situations online, i have seen that people have ruined 2-3 memory cards by putting it in the S3.
I am facing the same problem and it is getting on my nerves. I live in a third world country so I might not receive a new phone.
Please find a solution XDA FORUM! :crying:
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying (the card brand is Team Group), this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the “Media” scanning process and significantly draining the battery.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:

SD Unexpectedly Removed - NO Remount

Ive searched the forums here as well as google, and find many S3 users facing a Verrrrry similar problem, where their SD card is "Unexpectedly Removed" and then Remounts itself, and the process repeats, causing battery drainage, loss of access to apps etc.. Mostly Related to a SanDisk manufacturing default with certain chips.
My problem however, is slightly unique, in that, mine does not remount itself once it has been "removed". Once physically removed, and checked on a PC, all my files are still there, in working order. Ive Formatted, both "quick" and full format to Fat32, and the card works fine for about an hour to maybe a whole night if Ive done it right before bed. It seems as soon as it starts to be accessed in any way for more than ten minutes, it gets "removed".
Ive tried the following to try and remedy the problem. (Im fairly broke so buying a new card is last resort in my case)
-Both Formats of the card several times.
-Put it in another phone which reads it, format, unmount safely, mount into my phone, and no luck, doesnt even see it
-Factory Reset incase of any bugs in software that may be causing a malfunction of any kind
-Full Wipe X3 + Change of ROM
Im going to be borrowing a friends card for the night tonight, a spare 2GB he has, and see if the phone repeats the error, or if it really is fault of the SD card in question.
Phone Specs
Rogers S3
Running Darth Stalker 4.1.2? and now AoCP_By_The_Collective5.95 4.2.2
Kernel:3.4.53-cyanogenmod-g361781f
SD Card: Lexar 16GB Class 4 Micro SD HC
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the problem? or does it really sound like the card is at fault? I question this only because the card works elsewhere, and works in my phone for the first little while, with or without files on it, after I format it..
I'll report back about the other card tonight.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I cant find this problem solved in any way, anywhere :s
Once you report back and if the new card works it sounds like the card. But if the second card fails it sounds like a hardware issue only if you tried different ROMS and kernels and going back to stock by using Odin.
