[Q] Getting started, with.... everything. - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a Desire HD, and I am looking to root, however, I have some concerns,
(I'm hoping that a list is not too boring!)
1. I have the 1.72 update
2. I have no idea, whatsoever on how to back up my current config, without rooting my device (and possibly loosing everything)
3. How to root using visionary? ....
4. Installing ROM When finished?
5. Is there some sort of start to finish n00b proof guide?
Thanks,
T

Hi,
you're on 1.72 so you need to downgrade first.
Follow this excellent guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
After this you have 1.32.405.3 Stock firmware and you're able to root using visionary+.

Ok, so after that, could i install MIUI First, straight off?
Or do i have to go to stock first?

After downgrading and rooting, you have to set ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF and then you can flash MIUI.
Please read the guides @ Android Development Forums.

Hboot and Debranding Desire HD on Orange UK

I have searched enough and only method comes up to check hboot is apparently holding down volume down button and switching HDH on.
I've tried it on my orange branded desire HD but it just shown a flashy wall paper and then orange logo appears.
My software version is 1.40.61.2 and all I want to do it get rid of orange crap from it and use a generic htc software.
Could someone please help me in simple words?
How to check HBoot and what should I do to install generic software?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Download Elixir from market, that shows bootloader version.

The reason why you didn't get to bootloader menu was because fastboot was enabled. Next time, take out your battery, replace it, then try and go into bootloader. It should work.
To flash a generic HTC ROM you will need to get root, Radio S-OFF and of course the actual Generic HTC ROM file.
Follow the instructions from this thread to Root + Radio S-OFF your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Once complete, and you have S-OFF enabled in bootloader you can proceed to flash the generic HTC ROM. The link below contains the HTC WWE 1.32.405.6 RUU:
http://www.xdafil.es/DesireHD/RUU/R....140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed.exe
Once you flash the above HTC RUU, you will lose root but you will still have Radio S-OFF which means you can still flash any ROM you like.
You can also flash a custom ROM instead of the generic HTC RUU after you have Radio S-OFF

Got it sorted with S-OFF thingie.......thanks for helping me.
Just a few more questions as you seem like quite knowledgeable.
1) I am downloading generic file, would that complete wipe my phone and settings?
2) Would I be able to upgrade OTA if a future release comes from HTC?
3) Loosing root means I wont be able to use those applications which require root access....even with VISIONary?
4) How do I flash the rom? Do I need a goldcard for that? As mine is a branded orange handset.
Thanks a lot.

1) Yes, it is a generic HTC unbranded ROM. It will wipe your settings, as will any ROM you flash.
2) I think so, as long as you stick with the official generic HTC roms. If not, you can download the OTA update from here and apply it manually via ClockworkMod Recovery, which is safer as it will stop it overwriting the HBOOT and Custom Recovery (which is what the last update did)
3) Losing root access means you can't use applications that require root access. However, Visonary is used to get root from being in a state of no-root. Once you run Visonary, it will do its exploit and make the system root for you. This doesn't work on 1.72/1.75 ROMs, however the ROM link I have given you is a rootable ROM.
4) With S-OFF, you do not need a Goldcard. For the Official ROMs (like the link I gave you) follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890
For custom ROMs, you will need to install ClockworkMod recovery and from there flash the ROMs. To get ClockworkMod recovery, first make sure your current ROM is rooted, then download 'ROM Manager' from the Android Market, then run the application and tap 'Flash ClockworkMod recovery'. To boot into clockworkmod recovery, take out the battery, replace it, go into bootloader, then choose 'Recovery'.
Also thought you would like to know how to get back to stock Orange UK ROM for warranty reasons.
1) Do Radio S-ON and restore your CID (using the same tool you used to get Radio S-OFF)
2) Download this Orange UK 1.40.61.2 ROM: http://www.xdafil.es/DesireHD/RUU/R....140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_157531_signed.exe
3) Install that ROM using the method described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890
Great...you are a God send mate. I have searched so much and now finally I can flash my HDH.
Flashing with HTC unbranded rom, would I loose S-OFF???

Hey, no problem
If you have Radio S-OFF, it will stay Radio S-OFF unless you manually turn it to Radio S-ON using the program.
Flashing anything will not affect it. So you are good to flash the HTC ROM
Just to let other guys know.....I have followed the steps as prank1 has suggested and now I have a stock HTC rom without any of the orange crap on it. All orange logos, icons and softwares have disappeared.
I have unlocked phone with S-OFF and I am sure now I can flash with custom roms as well which would be my next try.
Thanks once again.

when the phone rebooted and was installed the update it stopped and now all i have is an image of the phone on the screen with a red triangle. it's been 10 minutes and it's not doing nething.
what have i done... and how do i undo it
PLEASE HELP
I did exactly the same thing and now it wont update, I reported it to HTC but theyve advised me that its 'with the developer' which to be honest suggests that I will never get a reply beyond the ticket number they gave me. Cant believe moving bloody Uno of my phone would cause such a hassle
Hi guys! I need your help to tell me if I understand correctly..

What are correct steps I need to follow?
1. Follow the instructions from this thread to Root + Radio S-OFF your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537

3. Install ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003723

[Q] Return to stock (remove all roots, S-OFF, Clockwork etc)

Hey Guys.
Anyone got or is able to create a step by step guide on returning the phone to default, all I want it Clockwork bootloader gone, I want stock rom (British, Generic) and to remove S-OFF if possible?
Many thanks
Follow Radio S-OFF Tool thread instructions, those will make your device completely stock. It requires that you already have Radio S-OFF. If you don't, get S-OFF first, as weird as it sounds

[Q] Simplest way to upgrade rooted 1.32 to latest update

I've read around the forums and seen some somewhat odd solutions to this problem, and wondered if I've simply missed something or it's the only solution to this problem.
Simply, I have a 1.32 perm-rooted phone and I would like to upgrade to the latest update (rom and radio) while keeping my root access. I don't want any of the custom roms, I just want the plain vanilla update plus the latest radio updates because they seem to improve things (being with Vodafone in Australia I need all the improvements I can get!).
Alternatively, what is the custom ROM that is closest to the standard one which meets the above requirements (latest update, latest radio while keeping root access)?
As I said, I already have root access, ClockMod recovery plus S-OFF. Do I need the ENG one to do what I need to do? I've seen the one-click tool for this but haven't bothered because I wasn't sure it was entirely necessary.
Thanks,
Ian
Get ENG S-OFF using my tool, flash Raidroid stockify series ROM via ClockworkMod and flash the radio you want using radio flash guide instructions.

Had looked for a "plain" ROM that didn't have any change to it, this set slipped under my radar. Thanks for the pointers, will do those things when I get a chance.

[Q]How to quit the DHD without roots and s-off and with the original rom?

Hello, I am new to Android, but still decided to risk installing a rom, I did create all the procedures from a gold card after downgrade, root, then do the s-off and finally install the rom Android Revolution HD 3.3. Thank God everything worked out.
Now I have a huge doubt, if I sell my phone and want to leave it "raw" or how he came to Fabricated without root, without s-off, and no custom rom what should I do?
Sorry for my english, but I live in Brazil and I'm using Google translator. I thank you all.
To get back to stock:
- Please search the forum
- Find one of the numerous posts about the subject
- Follow the instructions
there are SEVERAL topics about it, to make it short:
-flash the original RUU
-root
-achieve s-on by same tool you s-offed your device
-unroot
-sell
regards!
Guess Shortest procedure should be
1 . Radio S-Off using Jkolijo's tool
2. Install latest official Ruu
you should be good to go

You should do s-on, not off and thiagodark already posted the instructions even though they can easily be found by searching.

[Q] Which route to take

I have just received my DHD this afternoon and was wondering if I should try and root the phone.
I am currently on:
Firmware - 2.2.1
Kernal - 2.6
Software - 1.84
Browser - webkit 3.1
I want to up date it to (Gingerbread) - 2.3 but I am not sure if I should 1st download the update and then root - or to root 1st and update later?
If anyone could help guide me with which root is best and possibly why that would be great.
If possible - I am looking for the easiest rooting process (newbie) and possibly with better battery life and hopefully sense 3.0.
1) Downgrade to 1.32
2) Root, Eng S-OFF, Radio S-OFF
3) Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
4) Flash Seraphic's Rooted Gingerbread
That way you can go back and forth between ROMs if you want, or just have Gingerbread.
^^^
Is it possible you could elaborate on the above instructions as I am very new to this and I am a little worried about bricking the phone.
Do you have any links to particular threads that I can follow or perhaps even video tutorials for them?
I have come across these 2 threads - are these the correct 1's: ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Thanks.
Sorry I meant to come back and link the steps.
I'm out at the moment, so unable to for it now.
For step one you need the downgrade thread in the development section, step two you need visionary+, one click ENG S-OFF tool and the one click radio S-OFF tool.
I have just come across these threads in the Development Section of Desire HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
is there a particular 1 I should follow for step 1?
1) Downgrade to 1.32
Personally I'd do it manually following the guide here

Do you possibly know of a video tutorial of the above link instead?
its just that I would feel more comfortable following video instructions because I'm worried that this £250+ device may become bricked
(off topic a little ..... can bricked DHD's be restored) ??
Read the guides few times and I'm sure you will understand.

If... for now, I do the OTA update on my phone to 2.3 (Gingerbread) - will I still be able to downgrade and root at a later date?
... perhaps in about a months time.
No, don't apply the update. You don't know whether it will be 2.36, 2.37 or 2.42.
As it stands only 2.42 cannot be rooted & downgraded yet.

Ok, I have done 1,2 and 3 and am now downloading number 4 to desktop.
( seraphic_gb_rooted_0-1.zip ) -
but how do I put it (or flash it) on to my phone?
Is it best to do it through ROM manager?
Code:
[B]New phone details[/B]
Android Version
2.2
Baseband
12.28b.60.140eU
Kernel
2.6.32.21
Build Number
1.32.405.6
Software number
1.32.405.6
Browser
WebKit 3.1
I made a stock rooted HTC 2.50.405.2 ROM, the latest available.
Download that instead, copy to your SD card, and flash in ClockworkMod Recovery. Make sure you wipe everything first. i.e /system /data /cache.
Will flashing clear everything of my sim card and/or memory card?
No, but there is the option to wipe /sdcard, make sure you don't select that.
are these the options in the clockwork mod recovery you mean?
.... can I just ignore them and go straight to the install because when I go to select the downloaded rom on ROM manager it already gives me the options to :
> Backup existing ROM (although mine is stock at the moment)
> Wipe data and Cache
> Wipe Dalvik Cache (which is pre selected)
