format sd card - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read alot of times the suggestion is to format the sd card. My question is since I am still new is do I simply move what I want to save (pictures) to my PC and then format? Do all the folders get automatically put back?
Thanks

Copy the data you want to your PC, format it, and copy the data back. Formatting destroys all data on the card.

Will the folders on the card now be put back on at some point by the phone itself?

Anything you didn't put there yourself, or download to it (e.g. in a browser, through Beautiful Widgets, or photos), yes.

I'm also still pretty new too. What is the benefit of formatting the sd card? I've never done it but I flash different roms all the time to check them out.

thats not working perfect, thats called one f'd up phone.
sounds like a bad memory card and you can wipe and format all day long, the card is still bad.
are you using a different card than the one that came with the phone?
if so put the original back
if not, go get a different card.
if the original is bad take it to the sprnt store and see if they can replace it.

Boot into the bootloader, then select clear storage. This is a COMPLETE wipe of data...
Or, try and flash a new rom first before doing the prior.

Phone storage all used.

Hi all. Got a problem with my One X where it seems something is using all my storage space.
Has anyone seen this before? Easy fix? Going to move to a different Rom soon but this is crippling my phone until I move. Will post my current Rom in a follow up.
Villan Rom 1.1.1 is what I'm running.

Known problem prior to 1.29.401.11 (or equivalent). If your base is same or newer, just copy the data off the phone, format SD Card and copy it back on.
Ok thanks BenPope. Will give that a try.

Yup. It's a known issue that HTC has fixed in their updates Just copy everything from your SD, format it through the phone options, then copy everything back. It's an issue where files aren;t "really" deleted, hence still taking the space that should have been freed.
Sorry for the late reply to this. Where can I get the base files from?
You can use MIUI rom,but it's not android 4.1

[Q] Deleted Pictures?

I unlocked my Bootloader today and without knowing basically wiped my SD card of all personal files including music, text message backup files, my backup root files, ALL files. I honestly dont care to recover all files that were deleted but am dying to get my pictures back. Is there anyway i can get them back without the guide used to get back all deleted files as seen in this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705 guide? I was trying it but it doesnt wanna play right with my laptop(Windows 8 and it keeps saying i dont have "permission", even though im the main and only user). I tried the disk digger app but its finding all kind of random pictures i never remember and things like that, just too much. So please if anyone knows anyway i can get them back share some insight.
Anything????
That was a super fast bump...you could try recovering everything with disk digger and trying to pick out what you're looking for after it finishes. The recovery applications look for anything that has not been overwritten in memory (even if it was deleted), it won't pick and choose the most recently saved stuff for you; you usually need to do that yourself.

Problem when switching phone on.

Hi guys!
My htc 10 is European s-one with bootloader unlocked and I loaded maximusHD 1.95.401 in it and stock kernel.
The problem is that during night I switch it off and recharge it and when I switch it on again it can restart itself up to 5 times before showing the 3 dots htc logo. Practically it restart the first vibration feed 3 to 5 times, seems like in a bootloop. Is that normal? Thanks for your help!

Thanks mate! Good news but not that good..i mean, my card is a brand new samsung 128gb and it's nearly empty. Today it started at first try, yesterday morning it took 5 times. Should I reformat the card in a particular way?

Most probably something screwed ur sd card up. you should try reformatting it and doing it again.
my guess is that maximus rom had something to do with it.
Hope it fixes ur issue!
Cheers!

Thanks for helping out! I think i will hold on and wait for Maximus nougat, format the Sd for the occasion and see if that happens again!
Does anyone knows which is the better format type for SD?

I believe that MaximusHD Nougat has been out for a day or two now.
Fun thing, I have the same problem as well.
At first it was scary but then I got used to it.
Also yes, I'm also using 128GB Samsung SD card but I don't know if that's the reason or not.

Really? It still gets on my nerves...I'll try to format the SD in a different format and see if it makes any difference. Usually how many times does your device restarts when you switch it on?

Okay, but as for your format SD question...
If it is less than 32gb format it to FAT32, if it is more than 32gb format it to exfat.
There is an SD formatter from the SD Association that you could try. It'll clean it right up, but you'll need patience while running it. The full format takes a while (like over an hour for larger cards).
You can download that formatter from here. It has worked for a few people I know.
EDIT: You could flash the newest MaximusHD ROM with old firmware if you like, but the fingerprint and home button won't work. Otherwise it'll run fine.

3 usually, 5 at most.
Yeah it's pretty nervous at first, then after a couple of times I just sit back and relax.

Your always welcome! i would say try a sd that is of a maximum capacity of 64gb just to be on the safe side.
a couple would be the Sandisk Extreme 64GB or the PNY U3 Turbo 64GB.
Hope this helps ya!
