[Q] EXT4 help for SyndicateRom Frozen - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I was planning on flashing SyndicateRom Frozen, and I think I might need to convert to ext4. I’ve been reading for hours and I've read so much that I think my eyeballs are about to fall out.
I’m coming from a stock EB13 deodexed Froyo rom from XDA (which is great btw). From what I understand I will still need to convert to ext4 by running the convert .zip in the first post of the Syndicate thread. Then update to the Syndicate rom. Is this correct?
So the steps would be:
1) Download cwm3.zip and Syndicate rom to phone
2) Access my current cwm (down vol., camara, and power)
3) Update to the cwm3.zip and it will convert to ext4
4) Reboot and access cwm again and wipe data 3x
5) Update to the Syndicate rom
Also, after I convert I take it this means I can't go back to my older backup roms?
As an aside, I think this is my first post so want to thank all those making these roms a reality. And thank all those that have spent their time and effort reverse engineering/hacking/working on this phone and it’s software.

Pretty much spot on I believe. I just rooted my epic today and am running this rom and its really fast, you will enjoy it.

I don't know that I've seen a cwm3 flashable zip are you sure that the one you have/mention there isn't the 3.0.0.6 one click version? If so then you should just need to root with cwm3 one click (directly over top 2.5) then boot into recovery with 3 finger and it will convert to ext4, then you wipe data, cache and dalvik 3x and flash the rom. No need to reboot after ext4 conversion, just wipe and flash once it does its work and you should be all set.

Sounds like what I did for my phone last week.
Anyone know if you can do the same for those with the EC05 update? Wife is so impressed with the ROM she wants me to do hers, but she was waiting to see how EC05 was

I think now that I've had a chance to look at the cwm3.zip and go deeper into the instructions, this looks like the right way. cwm3.zip is the one click setup. I'm about to try this, for those interested I currently have cwm 2.5.1.0 installed, which I expect will be replaced when the cwm3 is run.

It works! It was rather uneventful actually. The steps were basically what iamchocho described, it was straight forward.
So I've been using the new rom for a few hours now, and it's scary fast. It actually takes a second to adjust to the speed.
Thanks iamchocho for the instructions, and all those who replied as well.

[Q] Help flashing [ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011
Ok guys, im gonna attempt a flash([ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011) today on my friends samsung epic 4g which is fully stock at the moment, i already have read the instructions but i need a little guidance in the right direction. I have flashed clockworkmodrecovery using

so now i can boot into clockworkmod recovery, but b4 i flash anything im going to do a backup through the clockworkmod recovery, i read in the Bonsai4All thread that i need to "Odin the dk28 modem first", can someone tell me how i can do that, like give me a link to the required files and how i would go about installing them. Also is there anything else that i am not doing that is required to flash to the Bonsai4All ROM from a stock samsung epic 4g , all feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys.
This is the Epic wiki. Scroll down to Odin Stock Flashing and follow those instructions. Under Official Roms (just above Odin Stock Flashing) is the dk28 file. It's titled 'SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 Stock DK28 (Leaked).' That's what you put in Odin to flash to stock dk28. Scroll down further to Community Roms and you will see the Bonsai4All rom. Once you are on stock dk28, have cwm3 installed, and download the Bonsai rom to the SDcard, you can flash Bonsai through cwm.

The wiki says I have to "Select the victory_8G_100528.pit on the right in the pit section" on step number 4, do I have to do that to flash to Bonsai, or do I just do what you told me.

When I flashed to stock dk28 , I used the Victory pit along with the SPH-D700-DK28.tar. So, I would do both.
I have used it without victory BUT I was already on dk28. I had a 2.2 rom and I was flashing back to stock dk28.
So, final answer, for the first time going to dk28, I would use both the pit and tar.
On a side note, make sure only the reset time and auto-reboot check boxed are checked. There shoud be three total check boxes. For the first time, only check those. If you install a rom and want to go back to stock dk28 in the future, then only check auto-reboot.
So basically what you're saying. Is all that I really need to do is substitute the dk28 tar u told me instead of the one used on step 5?

ok, one more question before i begin is, do i backup with clockworkmodrecovery before i flash dk28, or if im correct the flash will delete everything including root, and upgrade the phone to 2.2, so the backup would be irrelevant until b4 i flash the bonasi?

Yes, using flash with ODIN will erase everything including root. So, backup everything before you start. It should backup to your SDcard. When you do the stock flash, root, install cwm3 and flash your 2.2 based rom, you should be able to boot into cwm, go to backup/restore- advanced restore and restore data.
I would install My Backup or something similar before attempting though. Just in case cwm doesn't keep your backup after the flash. It's worked for me in the past. After backup, you can also move the backup file to your computer's hard drive for safekeeping. It's in the root of the sd folder under Clockwork recovery.
thumbs up picking bonsai rom. ive tried midnight, viper, nebula already and none of them even compare to the speeds of bonsai. if your going for speed and no force closes choose bonsai.
to kind of answer your question, always backup, it wont hurt anything.

ok, thanks, i think i got the steps down, after i have this installed, i root it using(insert link and awesome advice here)?
I'm on my phone now so I can't see the links and so forth. I think the bonsai rom will install root, cwm, convert to ext 4 file system and install bonsai. Double check the rom thread though. If not, theres a one-click root w/ cwm3 in the dev section

[Q] Need help updating please

Hello, I've been using this website til this past december and I love it but stopped messing around with my phone because of graduate school. So the last thing I did was just update to stock dk28 modem without rooting it. Now I'm trying to catch up and need help to refresh lol.
Anyways, so yeah i'm on 2.2 (not rooted) currently and trying to update to the new syndicate rom. As the installation instruction says, I need to use odin to install the TAR and PIT and I know that is after rooting my epic. So is the rooting method the same as it was for 2.1?
Last question for now to get started, I really dont understand this part of the installation instructions in their thread properly "Then, use the CWM 3.0.0.6 One Click to install Clockwork and convert to EXT4.", so if anyone can please help me I will be more than grateful. to break down the questions, how do I install that new clockwork after updating to EB13? and how do I convert to EXT4? what is EXT4?
Sorry for all the questions andn using such a long thread just for help. Thanks.

1) odin to full eb13
2) run the cwm3.0.0.6 one click
3) reboot into recovery using 3 finger monkey grip. It well auto convert to ext4
4) flash the rom. (wipe data, cache, dalvik 3xs)
5) boot the phone (start up animation may look word)
6) boot into recovery again
7) flash the rom again (wipe data, cache 3xs)
8) your good to go

CWM One Click is a multi-purpose package. It: a) roots your phone, b) installs a flashing/backup/recovery package and c) converts your filesystem to ext4.
Do a search on how to install CWM. It's a matter of hooking your phone to a PC in USB debugging mode and then running a "run.bat" script. Now your phone is rooted and reboots, but you won't notice much different at that point (other than the Superuser App). If all you want is root, you're done.
If you want to flash a ROM then you boot into the recovery software (using the 3-finger technique).
This is where the gotchas start: The first time you do this, your file system will be automatically converted to a new filesystem: ext4 (it takes about 5 to 10 minutes). At this point, you need to be prepared: once it's converted to ext4, make sure you have an ext4-compatible ROM on your SD card that you can flash right then and there. At that point, I don't know if you can even reboot back into your stock ROM (I've always flashed a new ROM immediately, so I don't know).
Learn about the backup and restore mechanism in CWM, it's your friend.

You can run on stock eb13 with ext4 but you must flash at the minimum a ext4 compatible kernel.

[Q] Issues flashing MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip on stock eb13

Disclaimer:
I am new at this, I have read a lot and followed a lot of tutorials. I may not use terms correctly so please forgive me.
Problem:
I am trying to flash to MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip from stock eb13 on my Epic.
This is my first attempt at such a thing, i was able to successfully root my device via noobnl's instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
I am able to get rom manager installed and give it SU rights, etc. I got the full rom from the developer’s autism awareness site which is the full package. I make a backup through rom manager and reboot into CWM recovery.
I clear the data/cache 3 times and proceed to update through the zip on sd card option and point it to the midnight rom zip.
It says it is successful, i reboot and I become stuck on the samsung loading screen, I let it sit for 10min just to make sure, but no dice.
I then boot it back into recovery mode and try again multiple times which it is much faster this time but they all fail to load past the samsung load screen.
I go into the CWM recovery and attempt to load my backup, which hangs at installing cache every time.
So I am left with just booting into CWM.
I then resort do using odin to get back to eb13 and I am back where I began.
Sorry for the wall of text but I am lost and have tried to read a lot so I didn’t come on here asking random questions, but I have been working on this for a long time now and figure a forum post was due.
It wont work with CWM 2.5 and RFS. It requires CWM 3.0 and EXT4
After you ODIN back to EB13 go here:

I see now.
I used Rom manager to update my CWM to 3.0 and thought that would work with his first bullet, but I thought wrong.
I guess I dont understand RFS and EXT4, I thought rooting was rooting and noobnl's directions were the easiest for me to follow.
Much appreciated chris5h for the fast reply.
I will test this out when I get home from work.

Then when you restore, only restore data under advanced restore.
If you used Mybackup root or Titanium you can restore your apps from there, otherwise you should download them again from the market.

This is the easiest way I have found to root your phone with CWM3 and EXT4. If you don't mind using Odin I would suggest it strongly. I used it and installed Midnight ROM v4.2 and had no problems at all.
Well that was it. Thanks a lot everyone for your help. It took me like 10minutes once I had everything downloaded, much better than the hours upon hours yesterday
I officially have midnight ROM installed and I am rocking some nice speeds on my epic! Finally nice to see just what the phone is capable of.
Glad you got it. I wish people would stop using rom manager for the epic. It doesn't flash cwm

[Q] kernel differences

I just traded my evo for an epc... its probably my 15th rooted android phone.. what's the difference in kernels and roms on this one? I see there's no pure clockworkmod recovery for this one, so I don't wanna mes anything up. I need a good solid fast rom and a fast kernel like 20mhz to 1.6ish. I like a rm that's clean and doesnthave whacky fonts ad colors. Thanks in advance.
There is definitely a clockworkmod recovery for the Epic.
The Epic is only overclockable to 1.45ghz.
Check out Syndicate Rom.
And please use search next time there are all too many threads like this.

Idk what you mean my pure cwm, but we only have 1.4 ghz. The best combo for u would be android creative syndicate rom frozen 1.1 and genocide kernel 1.0. First get the rom and kernal on thur sd. Then run the root and cwm3 script and then power the phine completely off, hold volume down, camera and power until you get to an orange menu, if the menu is blue, reboot and rerun the cwm3 script. If it is orange and starts to run a convert script, wait for the conversion to be done and then Just wipe data/factory reset 3 times, wipe cache 3 times, go into advanced and wipe dalvik 3 times and then flash the rom and then the kernal.

Not sure exactly what to do I rooted using one click root and it installed its own cwm and then I had to get the cwm app from the market and install it over that, but its not flashing anything. What do you mean run the root and cwm scrpt and do all that 3 times??
The Genocide kernel didn't play well with Syndicate on either of my phones. Vision kernel 1.1 is a good alternative to Genocide as well as the Twilight kernel that comes witht the rom.

I did your instructions exactly and I'm stuck at the boot screen where it says samsungmobile.com
You either flashed an EXT4 Rom on CWM2 or an RFS Rom on CWM3, what color is the text in your CWM?
It's green.
See I've never had to worry about that before.
I'm also getting E: error can't open recover/log, something to that effect.
You aren't using CWM3, flash an rfs Rom then re root with CWM3.
Texted while driving
How do I flash an rfs rom at this point, I can't turn my phone on. If I figure that out, where do I go from there?
Power off, then hold volume down, camera button and power toget to CWM and flash it. Use an SD card reader to put the Rom on the card
Texted while driving
ahhh ok good, idea. Which rom should I use? I tried downloading a couple and for some reason the links take me to a weird website.
It's just a file hosting site, look for the download option on the site. It gas to be an rfs Rom so your options are limited.
Texted while driving
does it matter if it's rfs ext4?
Yes, like I said trying to flash the wrong filesystem on an incompatible CWM is the whole reason for your phone not booting.
Texted while driving
Can I use this one for it to be like stock? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904
That will not work. You are currently on rfs so it wouldn't change anything.
Texted while driving
I just want it to get my phone to boot up at this point lol

Phone won't flash ROM; no clue what to do now.

Okay, I just spent over 6 hours fussing with my phone. I'll try to keep it short and simple.
My phone was running GB 2.3.3. Then a RandomROM HAWK. I was wanting my phone to run EXT4. But, I could not get it to that. When I rooted it with CWM 3.1.0.1, that did not convert the system. Running the RFStoEXT4 zip also did not work.
I just now un-rooted and went back to stock EC05 2.2.1
I then ran CWM 3.0.0.6, which did successfully convert to EXT4.
"FINALLY!", I thought. I wipe data, cache, Dalvik three times. I go to flash a SyndicateROM 1.2, and I get stuck at the Samsung screen.
I've just spent a long time on my phone, and it doesn't help that there are way too many methods to root, unroot, update, flash this, flash that, and it doesn't help that there isn't one simple way to:
Root
Convert to EXT4
Update to Gingerbread 2.3.3/2.3.4
Without going through endless links. That's all I want to do.
I would do more searching however, I've spent enough time on the internet and I really, really need a break. Could someone please help point me in the right direction?
SRF 1.2 doesn't come with a kernel. Upgrade to purple CWM 3.1.0.1 if you haven't yet and flash a kernel and reboot. You should be good after that

Any custom kernel you choose.
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
I hate sounding like a pompous jerk but, the OP says in the post that it had no kernel >.< READ MAN READ!!!!
Anyways, to kinda help, Genocide's kernel works perfect with SRF 1.2
here's the link! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961614&highlight=genocide
I freaked out when I first tried to go to the ACS Frozen 1.2 ROM. I read that it had no kernel, but thought since I had the stock .tar file already flashed I was good to go.. n00b Mistake..
I used the Genocide 2.0 kernel, which I flashed immediately after I flashed ACS Frozen 1.2 and it worked awesome..
are you just wanting to go with EC05 and the ACS frozen 1.2 ROM?
or wanting to go with gingerbread?
If you put a stock or deodexed version of GB on the phone through ODIN, you should be good to go.
What is your end goal?
To get EG22 (2.3.4) on your phone deodexed and rooted with CWM 3.1, go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184134
I couldn't get mine to work with Odin 1.85, so I used Odin 1.61 and it worked flawlessly.
I just did this last night, coming from the EC05 ACS frozen 1.2 + Genocide 2.0 combo; so if you need help, let me know
CWM 3.0+ will automatically convert to EXT-4.
FYI, if you end goal is to get GB on your phone, rooted, this will be ONE simple step. You will just ODIN once and when you boot up you will have the following:
EB22 modem
2.3.4
all other stock EB22 stuff
