Hello Everyone.
I'm a new Evo 4G user and look forward to learning ALOT from this site. When I learn more about rooting, I'm sure I'll take the plunge. For now, I need internet access at my (rural) house. After reading many people say how wonderful PdaNet is, I can't get it to work. This is very important to me because my wife and I just seperated and she has my daughter (moved out of state). She won't let me call and talk to my daughter because I use her cell phone minutes (she has AT&T). I want to do skype, but need internet access. For now, I go to McD's or Dunkin Donuts to use their WiFi.
When I tried to tether earlier today, it connects to Network 3, but has no internet access.
I'm gettting error code 67 on my phone. I dismiss it.
It says Fail to Connect to the internet. Please make sure your phone has good data service and try again. I hit "Enable USB Tether and it just refreshed the same screen (I know that was already selected anyway)
I just tried it again here at DD. It said something like this application requires network access, so I connected to DD WiFi. I then get "PdaNet is on and running as a backgro0und service on your phone. Please click PdaNet tray icon from teh computer end to connect"
I do that, and it says "Please make sure your phone is attached to your computer and USB debugging is enabled on the phone"
Yes and yes.
Sorry for the rant here, Guys, but I really need to get internet at the house.
Thanks,
Bob
If your phone shows error 67 then the phone has no data connection, make sure it shows a 3G or 4G symbol to the left of your signal indicator, but with a quick root using unrevoked and a download of wireless tether you can connect and share wirelessly, don't hesitate at this point Evo rooting is down to a science and awesome devs have already done all the hard work for you, its not taking a plunge its like opening the shades and letting the light in. Read an Evo Root guide for noobs on xda and it walks you through every single step. This stuff is child's play

I've never tried tethering with pdanet while connected to wifi. Try it while connected to 3g or 4g and see what happens. I love the wireless tether app, so simple. And as the other guy said, error 67 means you have no data. Which is what leads me to believe it's got something to do with being on wifi.

Trouble with pdanet
I had the same problem. Try setting "charge only." It worked for me. Lew
Exactly, if your using pdanet the instructions say to select charge only when you connect the phone to your computer. The usb tethering selection is not used with PDAnet.
Thanks, everyone.
I had a 3G connection and had no problem accessing the internet from the phone. I didn't really understand why it was saying that I didn't have a data connection. When I would be using PdaNet at the house, I would not have a WiFi net to connect to, I just happened to be at DD to access the net with my computer and D/L the computer side s/w of PdaNet.
I will try the charge only option. I think I have the USB tether option selected.
I hope that works for me. I'll update and let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
Bob
Make sure you have USB debugging enabled.
Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging
You want to be in charge only mode when you plug the cable in.

One other thing if you can't get it to work, you might want to try Easy Tether instead of PDANet. I don't know if you bought the paid version of PDANet, but the paid version of Easy Tether is cheaper and it seems to work better for me.

ok, so while best buy was activating my phone (which took a litle shy of 3 hours) , they updated the firmware or the software (whatever it is that was updating at the time). when i had a touch pro 2 i rellied heavily on xda-wifi program to provide internet to my laptop. am i screwed now that best buy updated my phone? how can i get my phone to provide wifi to my laptop? i am in the dark, and even tho i love the evo's speed it still does not compare to a laptop and what it can do. Please help. i feel like if i am in the dark ages without wifi hotspot.
Like the hero when it first came out, wifi tethering in it's classic form doesn't work yet. HOWEVER: Go enable your sprint hotspot app...I believe I heard that haven't locked it down yet so even though you're not paying for the service, it should work in a pinch.
I seen i lot of this going on at best buy while i was waiting in line. They didnt get to mine though.
hmm ill try it, im guessing using the sprint hotspot "free" until they fix it will be uncapped huh?
but now that they updated me, am i going to be able to root? i saw a few post that people were able to get wifitethering after root but it was kinda of tricky.
i, for one dont mind the sprint tv, navigation and other sprint stuff. i actually enjoy using them (i mean im paying for em right?). but i would like a program like xda-wifi (the one i had on my tp2) where all i had to do was run the cab and it installed the program.
is there anything out there now where i can use the wifitethering abilities of the phone while keeping my rom "LIKE" stock with all programs that came out the box?

when i go to sprint hotspot and check the sprint mobile hotspot it gives me "error code 67. Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect. please try again"
The (temporary) free hotspot only works on 4G.
ah, that would make sense...seeing as how im in boston and 4g not getting here till 4th quarter 2010...this is insane...what do i do now in order to provide my laptop with internet from my phone? if someone could help me with the root or something. but my phone is updated, can i even do it now?

I don't live in a 4G area. Last night I was able to tether my HERO, my iTouch (I know), my wife's PRE, and my laptop. But today, I get the "error code 67". Darn it!
You can root ur phone after the OTA if you go to http://unrevoked.com/m from your phone browser and download the .apk, then run it... seemed to work pretty good for me at least it appears I'm rooted now (I couldn't get wifi tether to work tho)
On a side note...anyone else use this method or know if this is safe and/or from a trusted source? I usually stick to XDA for mod stuff, I just happened to run across this, this morning someone on Twitter posted it
EDIT: I see the other thread, nvm

the only reason i would root is to get access to get access to wifi tether, otherwise i have no reason to root (im not into removing apps and stuff).
what other threat did you see that had to do with my issue?
the updates started the moment she activated my phone. saw the word 'firmware' and yelled "NO!", reached over her shoulder and hit cancel.
Hope so because my friend was testing my phone and when he gave it back it was doing the update. He told me there was an update available, but he made it seem like it was an update in the market place! Now qik force closes overtime I open it.

Hey every one, I rooted my phone last night and so far so good, Some gliches here and there, but thats to be expected.
What I am having problems with is setting up my WIFI Tether. I downloaded the WIFI Tether app from the market (the one with the green broadcast signal on the main screen) and I cant get it to give me access to the internet.
I am not new to "networks"... I have 2 laptops, a PS3, 2 desktops, 2 PSPs, a DS and a SONY TV - all hooked up to my secure wireless network at my house...
But this has me stumped...
I am getting limited access and no internet connection through my broser... what I am doing wrong??
I dunno what info you would need to help me, but my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite... does not have bluetooth, only wifi...
EVO is rooted with unrevoked, flashed amon ra recovery... any help would be appriciated

Download the apk, install via ADB
1st. Download apk wireless tether, latest update, make sure the first wireless tether u've installed is removed completely from Manage Applications settings.
2nd. Run ADB prompt by adb remount, adb install file_name.apk
3rd. Reboot
4th. Test it

Okay the one I down loaded from the market was the one called..."wireless tether for root" by Muller,Lemons, Buxton
So that particular one is no good?
Okay - the only issues I have with your post is the whole adb stuff...lol.... sorry, im still new to all this and Im not sure what that is... Can't i just download it and install it the regular way? just curious...and if *NOT* then can you explain adb? is it an app or some thing like that?

How did you get it to work? I just uninstalled it and was going to try and set up the other suggestion... the one he told me about looks just like the one I just uninstalled...
ADB is like a program by SDK Tools.
Hold Shift + Right click on the folder C:\Android-sdk-windows\tools
Open command prompt on that
Type 'adb devices' while your plugged in with the usb plug to your PC
If it shows a line below that like your device 'HTC#####...' Name.
Type 'adb remount', then put the file of the apk in the tools folder.
Type 'adb install file_name.apk'
and type 'adb reboot'
Your phone should reboot and have the wireless tether apk installed and working...HOPEFULLY
AND READ THE GUIDE FOR ADB ON BEGINNERS ITS USEFUL BY THE SEARCH BUTTON

This **** is really confusing...lol... I wish there were"user manuals" for all the apps out there...
I know it seems simple once you get the hang of it all, but in the beginning, it really makes me feel like an idiot...lol
easy method
download the app from the link in the post a few above this one with your phone
make sure you have a check on non market app install in settings, applications
drop down the notification bar and touch the apk that was downloaded
it should install
done

Thanks for the input ZJ, how ever - I have already "installed" it twice, Getting it to install is not the problem at all.
The problem is getting it to work correctly. Any help on how to get it to connect to my laptop with out limited connectivity?? It works, it connects to the laptop, but it keeps saying limited connectivity... I cant actually get on the internet - say thru a browser or what ever...
I don't really think I need to go through adb to get it to work, cause it actually installs and works fine, as far as broadcasting wifi and being found by my laptop.
My computer recognizes it and every thing...when I connect to it though - It just says "connected with limited connectivity"
any help on this would be great... maybe the configurations every one is useing to get it to work?
There are several setting and what not and I guess cause I dont have a "user manual" its gonna take me messing around with the config to ...um fig...ure it out :/
::Frustrated::
When mine does that I go into settings, wireless, mobile data settings, uncheck all but top and always on, set provider(system?) to automatic. open a browser and surf or google maps, just to get the connection going and data transfers started, then open a webpage on laptop and it usually works, after it connects that first time then every time it just works, that first hump of connection is tough

In my opinion, JayStation3, I think you would like wireless tether built already into the Froyo ROMs we have here from XDA developers, maybe that can save your time a bit. Just a thought.
You can flash a new rom with wireless tether and a new kernel to make your phone ready to use. Just a thought once again, can't help you much a bit because I already am using it and it works fine.
Ok, here is a stupid question... Do I have to have to have "wifi" in the phone setting turned on when I use the tether app? I just assumed that the tether app turned it on automatically... I guess I could try it real quick to answer my question...

okay, that must have been it. I turned on my WIFI in phone settings and... well its working now... I figured that it used data connection like 3G and 4G...but i do have wifi here at my house - So I guess Im still kind of confused... Cause essentially - if I have wifi turn on through my phone - its like my phone is just acting like an access point, which would be pointless if I was trying to use my phone as a hotspot in my car or on a plane or some thing... Ill try it again tomorrow at my office where there is no wifi and see what happens. In the mean time Im gonna continue reading as much as I can here on all this stuff...
I do wanna try flashing another ROM here soon, I just want to learn as much about all this as I can. Im still kind of confused about flashing and restoring and making sure I have all my back up done right and what not... I look forward to trying out some of the awesome ROMs I have read and seen on the forums... but I want to be able to go back to the froyo2.2 incase I dont find any thing I really like...

What are people using for tethering since root isn't available yet?
Ive used the method described in the following thread. The best part about how it works is that it offers infrastructure mode, so I can tether my Galaxy Tab without any problems.

Note: See post #6
I heard that doing the ##778 edit causes a loss of phone data while tethered to the PC. Meaning data on the phone is dead but the pc has data. Is this true? After the edit do you just use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app?
Yes it's true, I've tried it.

But do you lose data on the phone while tethering? Also do you use the stock vzw app?
The answer to both questions is yes. I actually hadn't noticed it before but on my Dinc2 the signal meter only shows 1X instead of 3G when I activate the hotspot option. I guess I don't find that all too terrible as the only time I'm tethered I'm either using my tablet or my laptop.
Once the change is made, the hotspot app functions like it would if you were subscribed to the service.
What why would you do the hack if you only get 1x when tethering, that would be crazy slow.
Oops, My mistake. It appears my earlier reply was a load of crap!
3G is still clearly visible with hotspot enabled. Just ran a speed test on my Galaxy Tab. Downloads ranged from 473-329kbps with uploads between 303-193kbps.
So just to clarify. You did the following edits.
-in edit mode you will open 'security' and 'm.ip default profile' in turn. each time you look for the only entry containing "dun", as in:
<your actual phone number>@dun.vzw3g.com
edit out the "dun." so it looks like
<your actual phone number>@vzw3g.com
And you then use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app. After you enable the hotspot can you browse using the phone also? Or does internet on the phone stop working.
I think you're right, clarification is certainly in order.
Yes I simply removed dun from both of those locations and now use the standard, VZW included, hotspot app.
The phone cannot access the internet while tethering is enabled. Certainly a sacrifice, but from what I've seen so are the apps available with a rooted device which from my understanding cannot create an infrastructure hotspot, only ad-hoc.
Yeah the phone data loss kinda is a downfall. But I have an infrastructure connection with wireless tether on incredible 1 just for your info. Some apps are lucky and give good connections. well loss of data is probably a sacrifice I will make. thanks
Seems to me that the only time this would really matter is if you're sharing your connection with friends while still using your phone for data. Is there something I'm missing? I can see it being a minor annoyance but something I'd personally never run into.

If the detection is at the app level (unauthorized), like the article suggests, the hack may still be under the radar for the time being since folks are probably using the authorized app pre-installed on their phone.
Enabling Hotspot on ATT phones used to be as easy as freezing tether manager via Titanium Backup.
It seems with the GS3 on stock ICS this isn't enough...
I've also tried Wifi Tether Manager but still the sharing evades me.
A few threads mention the issue but I'd like to condense the issue to one place.
Any success stories or proven processes?

FoxFi seems to have been the solution for me (AT&T customer running a GS3). I was able to create a Wifi Hotspot and connect my laptop plus another Android phone, then surf the net on all 3 devices at the same time! I didn't clock the speed but it seemed to be at least a decent broadband response.
FoxFi doesn't require any significant tweaking, like Wifi Tether does.
I had a rather at length discussion today with advanced tech support at Samsung. He told me AT&T requested data traffic to be manipulated so tethering wasn't possible. He was trying to assure me it was VERIZON who encrypted the bootloader, and he used AT&T as the example of what their customers asked for from them.
How true it is, is another issue all together.
why would you reserve a post in a "question" thread?
anyways, i hate "wifi" tethering since the phone gets extremely hot. and it drains the battery quickly and connection isn't as solid. so this is why i prefer a "wired" tether. i just carry my usb wire around with me and i plug it into my computer when i need to tether. I downloaded "Tether" app from www.clockworkmod.com which let's you tether using a wired connection. it works completely fine for me. I even have Tasker set up to when I plug my phone into my PC, my phone automatically opens the Tether app and loads it waiting for me to "accept". if i don't wanna tether, i simply hit "Home" or "Back". simple as that.
Benefits to wired tether are:
phone doesn't get hot
battery doesn't die. in fact, it charges the phone
connection is solid
secured connection
only user using it

I even have Tasker set up to when I plug my phone into my PC, my phone automatically opens the Tether app and loads it waiting for me to "accept". if i don't wanna tether, i simply hit "Home" or "Back". simple as that.
Benefits to wired tether are:
phone doesn't get hot
battery doesn't die. in fact, it charges the phone
connection is solid
secured connection
only user using it

The Clockworkmod Tether app you referenced is not available for my GS3. Play only allows it to download on one of my 5 android models.
Can you confirm that you are using it with a GS3 running stock ICS?
what? dude just go to www.clockworkmod.com and all the info is there. or just download it from here:

FoxFi
I've wifi-tethered, unrooted, with FoxFi with no issues.
I've also tethered with a USB cable just fine using PDANet on the phone with the PDANet Windows application (again unrooted).
No issues.

I'm assuming you're using an AT&T GSIII? If so, how did you manage to get FoxFi on it? Apparently AT&T is now blocking it from the Play Store along with Sprint. I can't install it from the web, either...my devices are grayed out and it says it's not available on my carrier.
I'd rather not root my GSIII yet and FoxFi sounds like just the ticket.

Yes, at&t ... Not sure what to tell you, it installed fine for me and when I login via the web Play Store, it says it's compatible with all my devices.
Maybe the apk is available somewhere. Since at&t didn't block unknown sources, you should be able to install it.
So is there a safe way to tether natively (wired or wireless)? May it be loading another rom (AOKP or AOSP). I have no problem using a vpn on the pc side.
If I use foxfi or another workaround from the stock touchwiz will AT&T be able to track my tethering and shut down my unlimited plan? It would be useful to use tethering but I don't want to risk them finding it. If I root and use another method will they be able to find out?

Hmm. Well, thanks for the info anyway. I've tried getting it through the Play store on both my GSIII and GNex and I've had no luck. I'll do some looking around and see if I can find the apk for it.

Official FoxFi APK is free at http://foxfi.com/bin
I also figured out how to get FoxFi back in the market.
First remove your SIM Card and reboot. Connct over WiFi only.
Go to application settings and Clear Data from both "Google Framework Services" and "Play Store"
Reboot
Go back to the Play Store and you should see FoxFi now. If for some reason you get a cannot connect message in the Play store, go back and clear your data for the Play store again and try again.
AT&T must have just blocked FoxFi from the Play Store within the last day... I got it from the Play Store on Friday 7/13.
Is it permissible to post the .apk here?
I just upgraded to an S3 on AT&T yesterday and was able to pick up FoxFi. I am able to tether the device but the speeds are super slow.
My preferred solution!

Just downloaded foxfi from the market on att

I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.
have you tried foxfi?

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

Had this same problem about a year or so ago. Download "Root Checker" from Google Play. I forgot why but sometimes Root will be lost but your phone will say you are rooted. I don't remember the details. All you have to do is Root again if this is the case.
Try going into superuser app and updating the su binary, when mine get outdated sometimes wifi tether quits working but other root apps will still work.

Yes, no go on that one as well. No matter the program, I get the issue with my computer "unable to connect" on Windows 7, and also limited/no connectivity with Windows XP..
How can I generate a log to find out what's going on? I'm starting to get the feeling it has something to do w/ wifi driver, although wifi works fine, 4g works fine, 3g works, and wired tether works fine, I cannot get wireless tether to work with 3g or 4g..
Tried Sprint Hotspot, Wireless Tether (for root), Open Garden, Foxfi..

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.
I'm in the Atlanta area (North West - Kennesaw/Acworth). I use WiFi Tether (the open source app not the built in), just tested it, I was able to connect and use the internet from my Nexus 7.

Foxfi is broken on the SE4GT since the ICS update.
Installation instructions (for Sprint Users):
1. Make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked in phone Settings (under Applications or Developer).
2. Tap on the following links to download the apk file for FoxFi.
3. From phone notifications select the downloaded file. This will install FoxFi.
FoxFi latest version: 1.91.3
*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update.

As far as I know, the built in sprint hotspot is the only way to get infrastructure mode. All others are adhoc. If there is a setting for it for a profile, I think I remember reading somewhere to pick the galaxy nexus profile.
I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.
