[Q] Quick Nightly question (or two) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cyanogen forums and the thread here is quite extensive in searching.
1. Is there an actual change log for the nightly's?
2. When I flash a new nightly will I have to reinstall everything like a new Rom or are they installed like updates? ie; will I have to do the GPS fix Titanium ect....
Thanks

1. You can look at the change log from the system menu in CM settings
2. No, just flash it over your current nightly, no need to even wipe.

actually that changelog just shows diffs between 6.0 and 6.1 big updates like that not nightlys. the changelog i like to use is here. http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=supersonic

THIS is what I was looking for. In reading I notice some people going back and forth that just seems tedious to me so I wanted a change log to see if a certain nightly would even pertain to my usage.
Thanks to you both.

It installs as an update, so you would just boot into recovery, and flash the zip, no need to wipe anything.
And very welcome.

If you install from rom manager, you can choose the option to, other you need to manually flash them after the rom.

So if I download it from my PC and put on SD card I will have to manually install the Gapps, but if I download the ROM from Mod Manager I wont have to manually do it?

Correct, though you can only download the nightlies from rom manager if you have the premium version.

I appreciate both responses, very fast and it worked, thanks.
No prob, glad it worked for ya.
Keep a copy of it on your pc, cuz if you upgrade to a new nightly, you don't need to flash, but if you flash CM7 again, like a fresh install or a clean wipe, you'll have to re-flash the gapps.
Yes. This thread is win. Also if you go into the development section it has a flash-able g.apps. I flashed cm7 and gapps right after one another. Seemed smoother.

Or you can just go ahead and purchase rom manager premium. It really makes things easier plus it buys cyanogen a beer!
actually, if you flash one nightly over another, it will save gapps. srry to contradict but i have been doing it since day 1 and it works fine just flash gapps once, then flash each nightly every night possible.
Ok I'm running cyanogenmod 6.1.2 but I'm thinking of goin to cyanogenmod nightly...do I wipe everything back to stock or do I flash right over it??? And what's the latest cm nightly n is there any issues on it?

http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic 23 Is the newest, on it and no errors. And you need to backup your apps, then do a clean install.
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ latest gapps, flash that after flashing the rom.

use like handcent, ect, and go into send message settings, and enable the 160 character split, that should make it better.

Naw, just CDMA phones, like the evo can have trouble sending long messages, so using the 160 split makes it send faster, just basically 2 messages. Also for pics, ect, have your 3G on.

[Q] Someone Help Please?

Hey guys, I seem to be having a problem on my phone recently.. Every time I start it up, or try to load an app or something, I get a message saying the process ends. This happens with Google Apps, Gingerbread Keyboard, Etc. I've tried wipe x3 then reflash, but it doesn't do anything.
I'm running
Genocide Kernel, Firmware 2.2.1, And Simply AOSP v3.1.2
I believe it's still on SFR 1.2 , but it's not saying that in the build number so I'm not sure..
someone please help.
If you have a good nand backup you can do a factory data reset and then restore advanced data. That will clear up any of the FCs. Or clear data in each of the apps giving you problems in settings>applications>manage applications>all and scroll to google services framework and click it and clear data. Do the same for the Gingerbread keyboard and any other app FCing.

I will try this, but the other problem is, it just started having problems with the android processor. Like, I did a restore, and all the sudden, I'm getting all the errors I was getting originally, and like the core & android processor thing is failing.

Sounds like you did not have journaling enabled. The Factory Data reset and a reflash of your ROM should fix it. Find out how to enable journaling for your ROM and do it.

I'm sort of new to this, so just one more question. Now, I had Syndicate Frozen Rom 1.2 on originally, then I flashed Simply AOSP 3.1.2 . Which one would I reflash, Simply AOSP or SFR?

I believe Simply AOSP is a full ROM including kernel so that would be what you would reflash.

When you install a new ROM like AOSP all of that is gone. If you want to do SFR and Genocide instead of AOSP then go ahead. We should get you up and running first though and then you know the steps to take when it screws up again.

Yeah Kenny is right, as usual. If you decide to try SRF 1.2, flash the ROM, then journal on zip, then the kernel you want to use then reboot and enjoy.

I would suggest either pming or posting on the AOSP thread what setup you're on and how best to convert to their Rom. Sometimes they've heard of conflicts or tricks that they can walk you through. I love SRF, but if you want to explore, you should know what works best to transition. You'll get it going, just keep toying. Worst you have to do is Odin and that's not terrible for the phone now and again.

If coming from a different rom then yes. If you are coming from an RC candidate you may be able to get away with a cache wipe. I am going to try that later myself. Of course have a nandroid just in case... yada yada...
Edit: Unsuccessful DL after several attempts so far.
Yeah.. downloading is quite a chore at the moment.. I was rocking at 5 b/s with a day to download.. LoL..

Thanks! I know if you are on any different rom you must always do a full wipe. But on nightly I figured maybe both cache will be enough? And if it is a major change I am not sure if they tell you to wipe. I also noticed on the CM website I do not see the gaps. I can always grab them from CM7 on xda but thought it was weird. I was always a big CM but I have actually tried the Mod 5.01 sense rom and I have not went back since. Everything runs great on this rom. But I would like to go back to CM7 here soon at some point and would like to try the nightlies.

Yes, rom manager allows you to add in the GAPPS... Easy as pie. When everything works. I tried both ways and kept getting failures.
I was wondering if gapps were included since I did not see them seperate.
weird, my incoming mms pics are all black and white. Anybody have that prob?
I keep trying to download the latest nightly and it downloads a 0KB file. Anyone else getting this? I am also getting the same thing when trying RC3.

Are you flashing bad addons? Did you do a full wipe when you installed? Did you make system / kernel tweaks?

any word if that smoothed out? I had an issue where i guess i flashed a rom prior to flashing the upgraded firmware/modem and it caused a ton of odd issues. So make sure the rom you are using also is using the same radio/firmware you are. If it isnt, the main thread of the rom should have a DL link for the modem/firmware, or there are a couple AIO modem/Firmware dls out there.

[Q] Updating To Cm-10.2-20130907-Nightly From Cm-10.1.2

Hi,
I was trying to update to the nightly version of CyanogenMod, so I went to the update part in the settings and selected the latest nightly. I want to update for the Google Voice integration with any app. Upon downloading and restarting the phone to apply the update, it was at the screen with this (bit.ly/1a9E9NF) and 'Samsung Galaxy S III' written on the top but wouldn't move past that. I was able to boot into recovery mode and I installed CM-10.1.2 (Stable) on a microSD and applied that update so I was able to take control of the phone again, however; I was not able to get the nightlies. Can anyone help with that?
On a different note, when I updated back to CM-10.1.2 (Stable) the Google Play store would not work and many Google Apps would crash, I fixed this by going back into recovery mode and re installing GApps, is that related at all?
Right now, I have everything exactly as I had it before trying to go to nightlies, my issue is how do I update to nightlies now? Did I do something incorrect?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S III AT&T - I747. This is where I downloaded the update to my microSD card: bit.ly/14KMExv
Thank You,

How do you personally flash ROMS? Flashing them wrong can cause issues. Do you wipe everything first and then flash the software? Your supposed to wipe in recovery data, cache, and dalvik cache in that order or at least that's what I do each time. It always works for me.

Well, I am only updating my ROM, not flashing a new one. So wiping my phone would be unnecessary and inconvenient. I've updated before but only to stable versions, this is the first time I've tried a nightly.

Nightlies are a totally different breed. Whenever I flash ROM. I wipe everything. Since the latest nightly is a different android version from the previous android version. I am highly recommending flashing clean not dirty. The GAPPs are different also. It might be inconvenient but flashing clean eliminates many issues.

Thanks for the response! I really don't want to do a factory reset so I guess I'll go to my second option. The only reason I really want the nightly is for the Google Voice to Stock SMS integration which was available in the July Nightlies, is there an archive to those nightlies. I've tried looking but have had no luck.

Here's a link to MSgtSimon's CyanogenMod d2att archive. I believe 0813 was the last 10.1 nightly (I had been running it for over a week without any major hiccups). You could also try 10.1.3-RC2 (I'm not sure how stable this is since I haven't used it) if you wanted the ROM to have the most recent patches.

I'm running the latest nightly (0908) without any problems. I believe there was a problem with the online builder before. You can see that the nightlies for 0906 and 0907 (the two that didn't work) were only 184mb in size compared to the rest of the 10.2 ROMs that are 193mb in size.
