[Q] Backup DK28 to get to EC05 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Months ago I updated my wife's phone to DK28 using the update.zip method from DI18. The GPS has not worked since then.
I would like to ultimately get her to a state where her GPS works, she is upgraded to EC05, and without losing any of her settings (background picture, contact links to facebook, twitter, angry birds data, etc.).
What's the most painless way to do this? I'm not familiar with the backup options, I just recognize names (Titanium, nandroid, CWM), so if you could also explain what each backup option does in your suggestion, it would be appreciated. Also, my wife's phone is not rooted.
I have gone through an Odin flash and rooting on my own phone so I am familiar with those.

[Q] Need options for odd situation

Okay, so this may get a little long winded. I used to have an incredible but gave it to my GF when I upgraded to my Thunderbolt. I was rooted so I have been flashing the new versions of stock as they were released. She is on the latest build of Gingerbread, and it was working fine since I flashed it. However she has been getting the stupid low disk space error (even though she's got 6 gigs free on both internal and external storage). I am currently away on business for two months, and she needs to get this problem addressed. Well this morning she can no longer receive text messages. So I told her to kiss her stuff goodbye, and had her wipe data/cache and reinstall the newest stock rom. She still can't receive text messages. What are my options? I don't know if I could walk her through how to get back to stock (un rooted for the OTA), she isn't very computer literate and doesnt have ADB on her laptop. Anyone have any suggestions? Would going unrooted and getting the official update even help? Can I just send her an RUU in zip form to flash back to stock? She's freaking out, thus making my life horrible. Any help is really appreciated.

Well, my gf has a HTC Desire, which has 147MB set aside for app data, and she started getting this with just two Market apps installed...an issue that plagues that device. This was on 2.2!
I rooted her phone, and since she had all of her contacts as Phone contacts, the size it took up was over 87MB. I moved all of her contacts to Google, cleared the Contacts cache, re-synced Google, and her low storage warnings went away. I also stopped Facebook from syncing contact information as well. So now she is able to install more apps, and the issues haven't come back since.
I realize that this is a different phone, but maybe if she has a lot of phone contacts, and those are syncing up with FaceBook, could be causing issues?
I thought that too, so after she wiped and reinstalled the ROM I had her not set up Facebook. Another interesting thing, she can send all the texts she wants, but still cant receive any. I don't know what to tell her...

Wifi problems

I have started having a wifi problem. Everything looks to be connected and working properly (ie. status shows wifi, wifi settings show connected to my router with IP address), but I can't access the internet. If I toggle airplane mode, it will work. It will work fine, but will stop working again after asleep for some unknown time. I am currently running EL26 modem with Calkulin ROM 2.7 with the original kernel. I suspect the modem. I can't pinpoint when the problem started, but I think it was after I started flashing modems from my OTA EK02. I have restored ROMs that I know worked and now have the same problem. I have reflashed EK02, EL13, and EL26 to no avail. I restored to my current setup and did factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik. no good. I would prefer to avoid, but next step is to go back to EK02 OTA and start over slowly and proceed forward. Any ideas?
Edit:
I have corrected my problem, but have no idea what the problem was. I odined back to EG30. I was prompted for the OTA and took it. I did one root and installed EK02 stock+CWM. Installed a couple of my key apps and backed up. Rebuilt my system a couple apps at a time. Got everything working in this stock as possible environment. Once I confirmed no problems including wifi, I backed up again. I then restored my Calk 2.7 rom. I have been running with no problems for a couple days. My conclusion is a bad modem flash. I flashed modems from Calkulin's and qbking's threads. I am leery of flashing modems, but at least I have a pretty easy way back. Before I forge forward, I am going to delete all my modem zips. What is the best source for modem zips?

[Q] CM10 alpha 4.4 Nandroid backup fail

I tried to back up with the tar option within clockworkmod, but the phone reboots during the back up process. Anyone else seeing this?
I nandroided a backup set as well. The one I performed yesterday actually reads with a time/date of 0:00:00 on 1/1/0000 and is unusable; phone resets when attempting the restore. A backup made on 8/24 is fine.
So could just be something w/ the rom, or with the rom + JB. Which JB are you running?
I'm on PhantomPhreak53's latest alpha (4.4). I didn't have issues with any of the previous versions. It was strange I tried creating a backup yesterday (8/28) it created a folder that was dated (8/29).
Hmm, odd.. the date on my restore was really odd in that it showed 0000. It actually did give me a partial image, but not complete.
I don't recall which build I'm on, version shows 20-20120822 unofficial d 710.
Will be nice when this is complete and great and not having a) the airplane mode issue, b) volume / voicemail issue, and c) horrid battery life. Yeah yeah, I know roms aren't necessarily responsible for battery life, but I figure if its sitting doing nothing for an hour, it shouldn't drop 15% of my battery.
I just tried backing it and rebooted while backing up data. The folder has the right date now (2012-08-29.19.40.57), but still incomplete.
I just want to back up, restore my GB room to update prl and profile. I just updated my modem to FH23, hoping it'll cure my slow 4G speed. right now 4G is benching slower than 3G.
Hmm, this may be a lame work around, but try this.
install AppBak, create a 'backup' of your apps (it's just a list of them with an easy way to reinstall one by one)
remove everything you can that is a regular installed app, then try running your nandroid backup.
I ended up flashing 4.3 and create a backup successfully. I updated prl/profile then restored back 4.3. Then updated to 4.4. I didn't make any difference in my 4G speed though.
Good it worked out.
I'm still working on trying to figure out how to restore back to an CM with ICS, so I can triangleaway and update to JB again. Ugh.
They posted that this is a known issue with the backup/restore through recovery best bet is to mobile Odin back to el26 do a backup then Odin restore the stock kernel for cm10 then restart should work

Installing ROM kills data?

Hello, all. Long time Android user here, no stranger to rooting, ROMing, all that good stuff. I ran into sort of a weird issue that just started to happen quite consistently over the past few days. It all started when I tried to flash the new XtraSmooth Factory Image ROM when it went up. Everything went smooth, except, for some reason, it kills my data connection. FYI, I'm on Sprint, but I don't think that has anything to do with the issue. But it gets weirder. Even if I try to flash a different ROM, a ROM where I had data working before, data is still mucked. No connection whatsoever. If I try to restore a nandroid backup, even weirder things happen. Like for instance, the restoration process stopping at 20-25% and automatically rebooting back into Android (Which just happened an hour ago), or the backup going into a bootloop. Only solution to these problems are going back to stock and re-rooting everything all over again. It's really weird. Am I alone with this issue? Thanks for any help.
Yes your alone sadly. Restore to stock and root again/unlock bootloader, etc

OH1 recovery image -or- help getting back to stock firmware

Hi folks. Admitted Noob here asking for help.
[backstory]
After many years resistance I finally decided to get a phone. Freedompop's free plan was enough to push me over the fence. Found a nice S3 (L710VPUDOH1) on ebay and bought it. Everything was fine...except the stock rom had so much crap in it I was about to have a seizure. Back in the day I had put CM on a nookcolor so I thought that was the way to go. I consulted with a friend who assured me that CM played nicely with freedompop so down the rabbit hole I went.
[the first sign of trouble]
Installing CM went fine. Odin. Heimdall. I installed the latest clockwork mod touch recovery (6.0.4.5). Then I installed the latest CM snapshot (cm-12.1-20151117-SNAPSHOT-YOG7DAO1K7-d2spr.zip) and the appropriate gapps. Worked great. Nice and fast, good configuration options, no bloat....but it couldn't connect up to the 3g/4g network. Freedompop worked as long as WiFi was on and would not otherwise. Crap. What's the point of a cell phone if I have to have a WiFi hotspot???
Some googling revealed that the APNs were wrong so I tried that route. I was able to get LTE working but never got 3G. I live out in the boonies, so 3G is kinda important. Also found that CM breaks Sprint's PRL auto update which doesn't seem too happy.
[^H^H^H^H^H]
So, I decided to go back to the factory ROM and see how FP worked as I dutifully made a backup before installing CM. Now the SHTF. When I restore from backup in CWM (followed by a factory wipe data and cache to avoid the boot loop) the ROM cannot connect to Sprint's network. Doesn't know its IEMI or much of anything. It does connect up to wifi, log into my google account, get my paid apps, etc....but still no phone.
I installed Kies and attempted to restore/upgrade firmware (non-emergency mode). Kies got to about 66% and said there was an unexpected error. I'm guessing it didn't like the custom recovery and just plain quit on me. Was worried that I'd made a brick but alas I could still get to download mode. </bullet dodged>
I would like to put the phone back to stock (including recovery) but I have no factory recovery image. Does anyone have a recovery image for L710VPUDOH1? Alternatively, is there any harm in flashing the full ND8 onto the phone even though it had OH1 running before? I seem to remember reading things about bricking phones when trying to downgrade....which is in effect what I would be doing.
Any other suggestions about how to get back to stock would be most appreciated.
TIA
You can flash nd8. Nj2 is newer though. I don't think anyone has captured the oh1 tar yet. The only thing you should not do is flash anything before nd8 (pre Knox) like mk3 or older. Which is jellybean anyways so....
Hope this helps.
Yes, thank you; that was exactly what I needed to know.
I have a working phone at the moment so stock is not necessary required. For others that may be interested I flashed in Wicked X 8.2. From there the phone once again knew its IMEI and I was able to carrier reset and get it activated with Freedom Pop.
