[Q] Newbie Trying To Instal A Rom - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi im sorry if this question has been asked before..I was trying to install [ROM] Warm Z TwoPointTwo - [RLS 1 - 02/23/2011] - Yabba Dabba Doo via Rom Manager Premium. It started the flashing progress and looked like it was going to go through but then it said installation aborted. The phone booted up and when it got to my home screen it looked like my phone just did a factory wipe. All my apps were gone and I had to sign back into google as if I just got the phone out the box. Please help.

First of all WELCOME!!!
Im assuming that you are rooted correctly with s-off so do this for me. Place the .zip of the rom on to your SD card (not in a folder of the sd card, on the root of it) . Now, turn your phone off. Now, hold the volume down button and while still holding press the power button to turn on the phone. You should be taken to a bootloader screen. now press the volume down button to scroll to "recovery" now press the power button to select. Your phone should reboot into recovery. Now goto wipe and wipe the first 3 options listed by pressing the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select. Once completed goto where it says flash zip on sd card (something along those lines ) find your zip then press the powerbutton to select it. Now select reboot or power off phone and you should be good to go with the rom.

Also pat yourself on the back for killing a kitten...

Welcome. You will like Warm Z, but, in my opinion, you will love Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5, but to each his/her own.
Shut down your EVO. Now press and hold the volume down button and then press the power button. You will enter the bootloader screen. Select recovery. I don't know what recovery you have (Clockworkmod or amon RA) so the menus will be slightly different. I'm an amon RA user. Anyway, select the wipe menu and wipe the following at least twice:
Data/factory reset
cache
dalvik cache
DO NOT REBOOT
Maneuver to the flash menu and then select the rom you're going to flash and flash it. Afterwards, reboot and be patient. You may appear to hang at both the white HTC screen and the Warm splash screen. That's normal. Once you've gotten to your homescreen, login with your credentials. You should be good to go now.

Yes I use WarmTwoPointTwo RLS 5 as well. Great ROM with sooo many customization options. I attached a screenshot of my main screen. See all the transparency with beautiful widgets live weather wallpaper? I love it!!!

I tried your method and the message i got in recovery is
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Andriod 1.5
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update binary) to create working update zip packages.
Installation Aborted.

Upon first load it can take up to 5 minutes....any more than that you probably have a bootloop, so re-flash then install the rom again.

YAY!!!!!! The first initial boot may take a few minutes just be patient just as you been thus far.
After it boots up your good to go! Might want to install titanium backup premium for your apps so when you flash other ROMs you can easily batch restore your apps.
Also, Once you customize the rom to your liking reboot into recovery and do a NANDROID backup. Once you have a backup you can flash other roms and if you dont like them all you have to do is a NANDROID Restore and you will have everything back to normal as if you never flashed anything at all
So have fun and try different ROMs, a caveat it is ADDICTING! Ask anyone here. So good luck and try Warm twopointtwo (see my signature)

Flash amon RA 2.3 and get in the habit of not using ROM Manager. It is far too easy and effective to do your flashing directly from within recovery. Be sure to make a nandroid backup everything you make a significant change to your setup because you can always nandroid restore to what you had prior to the changes you've made.

Bootloop desire CM 6.1 RC

Hye guys,
When i wiped my rom, backuped my current and installed the new CM 6.1 RC, i am stuck at boot-loop.
The cm mod logo just reappears, and nothing further happens.
When i press power and volume down, and choose recovery, i just get this exclamation mark with a triangle around the mark over a desire.
Anyone got a suggestion to what i can do? the led seems to work fine.
Any help would be appriciated.
cheers
I have the same. Tried loading 6.0.2 first which works well but not getting past boot on 6.1

Well that is the standard htc recovery. That is the recovery installed to your phone if you didn't install another one. So if you rooted usings pauls method, you have probably been using fake flash to access recovery. So do the following to enter your fake flash recovery:
1. when on the triangle screen hold "volume up" and press "power button"
2. use volume and power button to select "flash update.zip"
3. now clockwork mod(your normal recovery) should appear, and you can just restore your backup.
Now lets hope you didn't install it in the order you mentioned:

This way your backup will contain a couple of empty partitions.. because you would have wiped it first. I hope you were not that stupid
And a note: please don't mess with things you clearly don't have a clue about. You clearly do not know, what you are doing to your phone and are just pushing buttons according to some guide.

So you wan't HTC to take care of a problem you created by hacking your phone? Take some responsibility and if you dont know how to install roms and how they work. Just don't.(note to OP above also applies to you)
And finally sorry for being a little rough on you guys but seriously such problems could be easily solved by the individual just by reading up on the subject of rooting as the above info should be common knowledge.

+1 he may be able to fix your problem or even get you another rom, at least be able to restore you back
yeah. I wouldnt mess with anything just yet. Make sure he wipes too.
Sheesh people...it takes two minutes to type out the directions to restore a nand. (With respect to the OP, it only takes 30 seconds to perform a search.)
I'll make this as painless as possible.
1. Look in your apps for Quick Boot. If that is not in there, go to the market and download it.
2. Once you open quick boot, select recovery.
3. Hit Vol. Down until Nandroid (or backup/restore) is highlighted
4. Press the power button
5. Select restore nandroid by highlighting and pressing the power button
6. On this next screen there will be a bunch of numbers and letters...just select it with the power button.
7. On this next screen is a list of the back-ups. If there is only one, just hit the power button and then hit it again to start the recovery. If there are more than one, select the most recent and hit the power button and then again to start recovery.
8. Select reboot device from the main menu.
Super simple, right? PM me or post with any questions. I may be off a little on the eact names on the selections, but if you can follow directions to pick your nose, you will be just fine.

[Q] T-Mobile G2 can't get Clockworkmod to work after downgrade

Hello everyone!
I've been trying to find anything about this issue, but nothing seems to work.
I had OTA 2.3.4 android on my t-mobile g2. So i have decided to downgrade it, to install CyanogenMod.
So I followed this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Everything went fine.
Then rooted it following this guide http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_G2:_Rooting
Then this http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision:_Radio_and_CyanogenMod to install CyanogenMod, but ClockworkMod doesn't seem to work. When I do Wipe data/factory reset, anything in Clockwork doesn't work. Even reboot or power off. This icon with yellow cirlce with hat on it comes on and does nothing. I waited like 20 mins, still nothing. If I push power button it goes back to clockwork recovery with all these options, but nothing isn't working.
I installed it using Rom manager, so its last version 5.0.2.0 (first i had 3.xx version but it acted the same way).
(oh by the way, i tried update it using OTA update from air, it freezes when HTC logo comes on and does nothing, factory reset is the same way)
I have root and S-OFF.
Please, guys help!!!
Disregard this first stuff, although it is probably a good idea to use a 3.x.x.x recovery anyways atm.
Are you sure that you were unable to use CWM recovery properly when you were on an earlier version like 3.0.2.4? The 5.x.x.x versions are a bit buggy I wouldn't bother with them at this point.
Go into ROM manager, hit menu > settings > 'Erase Recovery' set to ON.
then, go back to the main ROM manger screen, hit 'All ClockworkMod Recoveries' > select '3.0.2.4' > OK.
You will then see a progress bar at the top, and then a message saying you've successfully flashed recovery. Now power off, hold vol. dn + Power and enter the recovery again. Try doing some functions and see if it works.
Don't try and do a factory reset etc. through CWM if it does work though, the first thing you should be doing is going to 'backup and restore' > 'backup' to make a nandroid backup of this current setup. If successful, THEN you can wipe data and try to flash the CM7.zip.
----------
Not sure if you're aware either... You should be using the trackpad to select items in the CWM recovery. Not the power button (turns on/off screen) or menu button (shows/hides menus) or anything. Scroll with the trackpad and press down to select highlighted items with the trackpad. The only 2 buttons you need in CWM recovery for 99.9% of operation is the trackpad and the 'back' button.
----------
Also as an aside, don't try to accept any OTA's or anything. They won't work and may cause issues when you're rooted.
BTW disregard most of my previous post. I'm 99.9% sure you're just hitting the menu button thinking that its selecting things, but the MENU button just hides the menus, it doesn't select. Like I said, use the trackpad to select the menu items!!!
As I said in my previous post though, I want to reiterate: do a nandroid backup before wiping data. Its just a good idea to have your rooted 2.2 ROM as a nandroid backup to return to if something goes wrong with the flash. Just make it easy on yourself and do a backup, THEN wipe data and flash your .zip.
Duh, stupid me! Its working, actually it was working all this time. I was pushing a wrong button, power button. Use a track pad! Dumba**
Thank a lot!
martonikaj +1 thanks!

Of course, glad you figured it out. Be sure to make a nandroid backup before and after flashing CM7 .

[Q] HELP: My rooted G2 vision wont go to recovery, and it has long boot process

My G2 is rooted and It wont allow to access my recovery image.
Also: the phone takes awhile to boot up, I wiped and changed the rom already still the same results.
And it doesn't show any boot animations. I'm think this could be a hardware problem. Am I right?
Which recovery are you using? If you have 5.x its still very buggy and fails to boot to recovery a lot of the time. Downgrade back to 3.0.2.4, or use 4ext recovery.
On every boot? Cause the first boot is meant to take quite a while.
Please define how long exactly its taking, cause a minute or so is not unusual.
Boot animations would normally be a rom issue I think.
-Nipqer
If you are having trouble getting to recovery, you can 1) remove and re-insert the battery 2) hold down the volume down key, then press the power button on top of your phone 3) Let your phone boot to a white screen with colorful text 4) Use your volume up and down keys to highlight the recovery option 5) press the power button to select recovery.
Now that you are in recovery, you can either restore a nandoid back up you made previously, or flash another rom (you might be best off flashing a rom that is not Sense 3 or 3.5 unless you are sure you either have an HTC Desire Z (not a G2 phone) or you know that you have upgraded your G2 HBOOT to a Desire Z HBOOT).
Hope this helps you!

Every reboot it doesn't show the boot animations. and it also doesn't show the recovery screen at all. It's a display problem for sure I think.
Also the phone wont show the home screen until I tap the power button for like 2 minutes. (The LEDS pop up on the buttons, but the screen wont turn on)
I also changed the battery still no bueno.

I wish it did mate. I've tried all those solutions unfortunately. Thanks anyways.
Also I am currently running the latest CM7.
Try starting up rom manager. It had an option to reboot into recovery. It might work.
Further check if there is a file called PC10IMG.zip in the root of your sdcard. Delete it when it's present.

this is bananas.
Hi!
I have a similar problem here!
I sent my Desire Z in for repair (display was not working), they replaced the main board and shipped it back with the stock Gingerbread ROM.
I downgraded to the stock Froyo ROM and rooted it again (including S-OFF, flashing HBOOT, CWM recovery etc.)
I wanted to restore a backup (done before sending it in) using CWM, but when I select the "backup/restore" menu item all I get is a black screen with the CWM logo in the middle. When I press the power button it goes back to CWM's main menu.
It's the same with version 5.0 and 3.0.
I was able to restore the backup from the ROM Manager, but I don't want to install any other ROM right now because if something goes wrong, I won't be able to restore.
Is there something I can do?
Thanks!
---------- Post added at 02:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:44 AM ----------
Well, I feel like a moron.
The power button is not to select menu items in CWM. When I press the trackpad instead of Power all is fine
Should I install CWM 5 again or keep 3? What do you recommend?
From all I've read CWM is still buggy. I'd use 4EXT Recovery instead. It has fantastic support and contains all the options in CWM and more. Link is in my signature.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Im also facing the same problem before this. Im unable to go into recovery by manual that mean by using vol down + power. Just boot normally & using the rom manager to boot into recovery. Problem solve.

[Q] Can't Access Menu on CWM

Hello, this is my first post here and I'm hoping I can get some help. I spent most of last night searching for an issue similar to my own but I was unsuccessful.
I rooted my G2 and have installed mimicry. However, I am having issues with CWM 5.0.2.7. Whenever I choose to reboot into recovery, the main CWM menu shows up fine. However, if I choose any of the options (e.g. install from SD/card), it takes me to a blank screen with the CWM logo on it and nothing else happens. The phone is stuck on that screen until I take the battery out and reboot. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
Thanks.
are you selecting with power button or track ball?
also consider a touch recovery as you have a touch screen phone.
and more specifically my guess is you will be much happier with 4EXT RECOVERY

Haha, wow. I used the track ball to select and it worked. All the guides I've read said to use the power button to select. I really appreciate your help.
