Hi all,
I realise it might be silly to ask this in a HTC Desire section, but is it worth getting the Desire?
My niece is buying my HTC Hero from me and I loved owning that, so I was thinking of an 18 month Desire contract. What would you guys suggest?

People who have had HTC Heros before: how does it compare in terms of experience (not just a list of specs)?
It's an good upgrade from the hero. It feels more solid and optical trackpad is big improvement.

The little battery trick posted several places(1) worked pretty well for me and many other people (although not everyone). My Desire has been unplugged (and unused) for 16 hours and is only down to 89%. On a normal day (mp3's to and from work, browsing every chance I get, emails, texts, a few calls) I'm still in the green at bedtime.
(1) Too new to post a link. It's a full night's charge after full depletion, unplug, recharge one hour, unplug, turn on, turn off, charge one more hour.

cant see screen in day light - New Desires come with SLCD which work 100% in sunlight. My current Desire even works well in sunlight.
bluetooth dont stay on, discoverable for 120sec's - Why do you need it on longer than that? Normal bluetooth on the phone stays on for as long as you want.
speaker very poor - Again, you smoking something?

battery life does not suck! 3 days with heavy use if you know how to use android..

"poor gps" also have to disagree with that! I have a tom tom xl europe, use the phone more then my sat nav, very smooth, very accurate!
The camera is much better than the n95! My sister had the n95, at the time I had my nokia 5800, and that 3.2mp camera was much better! the hTc camers is much better, nice effects, auto focus.
720p video mode does freeze (sometimes) but then again thats what task killers are for
The speakers are bad, but if you listen long enough you won't see the differance, now that I'm back with my nokia, can't stop listening to music!
bluetooth is a bit of a dissapointment when sending bigger files, however I do think that there should be an app that should stop that.
well, thats my icing on the cake, if I think of anything else I'll let you know

I agree! The review by lee815 has been very poor. There is a thread on the forum on how to fix these littles annoyances. But most of what he mentions are utter bs tbh
I'm probably being a bit thick here, but what is "SLCD"? I've just got my desire and I'm having problems seeing the screen in daylight, so anything that rectifies that would be great.

Since you cant see a thing in daylight then you have an AMOLED Desire like most of us.. there is no solution to that to speak of.. i have bought a screen protector which stated it would make my screen readable on direct sunlight but thats bullocks at least..

Coming from a Hero, the Desire is a very welcome upgrade. Personally feel like it is the perfect size too.
The screen is hard to see when in direct sunlight but I haven't had an issue with it in the car for navigation so far and I use it at least once a week in the car.
It is that much more responsive and web browsing is awesome.
It doesn't feel as cramped as the Hero did to me after a while and it feels like a quality product though sadly I leave mine in a gel case to protect it. Everyone says the speaker is crap but I've been pretty happy with mine if I'm playing music through it but then I'm not an audiophile or anything like that. Easily the best phone I've had

Is it still risky to root it? I remember reading a while ago how easy it was to permanantly brick your Desire in some cases.

While im no "root guru" since i havent rooted any Android phones so far (was a WM 6.5 addict before hand) if you are on stock 2.1 rom and with the Amoled screen the rooting is as simple as pressing one button (with UnRevoked method..)
If you are on the 2.2 rom though.. ive read that you need to downgrade first to 2.1 before rooting etc..
I personaly dont have the need to root mine simply because, unlike M$, I trust HTC and her software and everything seems perfect to me on stock ROMs.. and im not really in the mood of flashing every day like i did on my xperia before..
Wether you decide to root it or not, the Desire is a truly wonderful phone in all of its aspects i hope you'll enjoy it as much as i (and probably most of the people who have boughted it) have..

If you are reffering to my previous response i seriously didnt have anything against you.. i just stated my own opinion on rooting and the phone in general.

lee seriously research what you initially don't like
i guarantee you some issues are real and some are because you don't yet know how to work the phone and others are very fixable quite easily with the good help from clever ppl on here.
the gps from my experience without any tweaks is amazingly good for locking onto sats quickly
the screen brightness is easily overcome with the power widget
i was disappointed for the first 2 weeks until i started to find apps and tricks here. now its just amazing.

My father needs a new phone and it looks like the Desire Z is the best option for buying for him.
I'm happy now with my HTC HD2, but I found out that a hell of a lot of tweaking/adjusting register/ROM-updating/enz. had to be done before it was great. When the HD2 came out the phone was great but the software sucked big time. Now I want to know, how about the Desire Z? Are there any bugs or major drawbacks? Anything really not working on these phones?
I'm thinking of trouble like I had with my HD2 which had a 3G/HSDPA-connection that hung up on me every now and than. Audiobooster which you had to turn on (again) after each song, Twitter-tab that never really worked until the last ROM-update and so on...
Let me know what sucks about the Desire Z (or why it's really great)

For me the only minus with DZ are the loose hinge issue, the lack of a front facing camera, the fact that the hardware keyboard does not have all the usual qwerty keyboard characters and that the hardware keyboard does not tilt.
These side, the DZ is great.
To buy or not to buy? The decision will be yours, bearing in mind that there might shortly be better configured devices coming from htc in not too distant a future.
No comparison whatsoever between Windows Mobile and the Android experience on the Desire Z. Having come from the Touch Pro 2, I was used to heavy tweaking & frequent ROM flashing just to make the phone tolerable. The DZ is light years ahead of any Windows Mobile phone. Its fast, smooth, stable, and just a joy to use out of the box. The only real modification I've done is remove the Bell Canada bloatware.

do you need the physical keyboard? if not flash a nice android ROM on the HD2 and go to town. I left my TP2 and HD2 because winmo 6 had come as far as it could, and android leaped ahead of it. I love my G2, but I wish I still had my Hd2 to enjoy with android, I don't use the keyboard, so the hinge isn't a factor, the 4g service is still in its infancy and spotty at best, and i live in a major city. Save you money or your tmobile upgrade credit, and wait for something significantly better and that ain't the nexus S

i have whats considered a newer desire z (i guess) and the hinge has not been a problem whatsoever. Its by far the best phone i have ever owned (Nexus one, desire, moto milestone). You will enjoy the accuracy of a real hardware keyboard as well.

+1. I had a TP2 as well, and the stock ROM sucked.
I am still running the stock ROM (1.34) on my Desire Z, and I love it. I'm sure the custom ROMs are great/even better, but the stock ROM on the DZ is so much better as an experience compared to my old WinMo phone.

Avoid actually paying money for anything that comes with MS on it... you should only pay for things that you actually USE.

How can you not use the keyboard? I've tried struggling my way through the IME, but despite the missing characters, I continually find myself opening the keyboard. Much MUCH easier to type with real physical buttons.

WHAT 4G service? Despite the lies, tmobile does NOT have ANY kind of 4G service. What they have is [email protected] Mb/s. It is STILL 3G and 3G ONLY.
Save you money or your tmobile upgrade credit, and wait for something significantly better and that ain't the nexus S

You could always be waiting for the next thing... there will ALWAYS be something better if you wait just a little longer. At some point, you have to actually buy the thing.
And the other thing is that the wait could be longer than you expect. It took TWO WHOLE YEARS for them to produce a phone that was a worthwhile upgrade over DREAM. A whole lot of phones have had some really compelling benefits, but considering the whole package, nothing else has yet been able to measure up.... so go ahead and wait until October 2012.

That's what I used to say too. But someone else here pointed out a press release from the ITU, who have *changed* their definition of 4G to now include this sort of HSPA+.
Who said the big companies have no influence over the standards bodies ?

If you an afford to have any one of them, then I would go for Desire HD. But it all depends what kinds of functionalities and looks you're looking for... Would you mind telling me a little bit more, so I could come up with a better response and also address the question "why" ?
Well I went Desire HD because its more powerful. I'm just like that. I also don't trust sliders. I had one a couple of years back and they seem kinda flimsy and easy to break to me.

Well, if what you're looking for is a powerfull phone, then there's no doubt that between HD and Z, HD is much "stronger", and also, it may sound weird, but I also like how heavy the DHD is

While it is a question if all of us think, whether this is the most awesome phone since the invention of cans and a string, it is not one that can be definitively answered.
So this would belong in the general section. This section - as I understand it - is for folks who have trouble with their device and seek advice or help.

Not my FAVOURITE phone ever, simply because I waited so long for it and then it came with so many issues (for me). Dodgy loose z-hinge which causes the two halves of the phone not to stay tight shut (mine is still buffered with layers of electrical tape in between to stop the annoying tapping when one half hits the other when typing on the screen), poor screen in sunlight, really poor speaker, 4 row keyboard instead of 5. These are the things that made me unhappy when I got it, but with little else to choose from (Android qwerty-wise) I had little option but to get used to it.
I think my favourite phone ever has to be my G1, simply because it was on a completely different level to what I had been using previously (Nokia smartphones like the N85 and N73). Yeah, sure it didn't really have the hardware needed (especially towards the end of it's life) but I LOVED that phone like a child :-D
The G2/DZ is a pretty decent phone, but was not groundbreaking in any way, shape or form. The development scene for it is just as good as I remember the G1's being, which is a plus - and ultimately that, and the fact there are still no better qwertys in the UK, is the only reason I'm still using this thing.
I love it because I got in love with it in March, and wanted to get it with a budget of just 250€ euros... No used ones weren't fake, so I got a Nexus One, great phone, and I decided to keep it thinking it was better of my beloved DZ, than in August Desire Z was 240€ new and sold my nexus one to get it. Now I love it, every single thing but the back cover which is already damaged. I like HTC assistance: they sent me a courier (is it right?) beacause I lived 20km far from the collection point and then in one working week I had it back repaired... (now on the other side they're asking me to go to the colelction point to get a new usb cable, which is 10€ and I should take 10 euros of train to get there..).
But as for the phone itself it just lacks a better GPU and a bit more of battery... Oh yes, it should be at least two metres thicker and five tons lighter
but I love it!

yEAH g2 is an amazing device!
When I look at all the new phones without hard keys or trackpads, I don't know what I'll find to replace my G2. I just have to get a handle on my battery drain issues then I can get another two years from it. I still miss the g1 keyboard sometimes, but the g2 is better in so many ways.

Its actually the only phone I loved that hasnt broken on me yet had it for almost a full year now and it still runs great. Dropped it plenty of times on the ground and it only has a few scratches & dents. Z-hinges aren't really bothersome and really isnt that loose, it makes the phone fun to flip and play around with actually! I really cant see a new phone w/o a qwerty board. Lets hope we get to see at least some this year.
I honestly dont know if there is another phone out there for me to update to! So I see myself with the g2 for a looooong time! And I would have never updated to it if it wasnt for the H+ speeds!
G1 in honesty has the best hand placement/keyboard feel!
Another plus was it was Black too!!
Have had it for more than a year and was my first smart phone. For me the only other device that competes is mytouch 4g slide simply because I can't live without keyboard but imo this has a far better look and feel than the 4g

It's my favorite phone, but it only became so after rooting it. IMO Sense is a bulky solution for dummy proofing a phone.When I rooted and got rid of the bloat I started loving it more and more.
I had a Desire before I went to the G2. I had to find out the expensive way that a touchscreen only phone just doesn't work for me
I had the g1 before this, and a few sidekicks before that. I've been hooked on keyboard phones since around 2006. Being a t-mobile customer, I am bound to what they provide so physical keyboards have become somewhat of a necessary thing for me when shopping for a phone. The g2 came as quite a surprise really. It's nearly 2 years old now and with a little tweaking, it's still preforming as well as a lot of todays (stock) high end devices. Bravo htc.
I'm looking forward to future physical keyboard devices.

First phone with physical QWERTY to me, and I won't buy a phone without it again.
This does need some tweaking (custom rom & overclocking) to be fast enough for daily use - but it's very easy thing to do.
This is my second Android-phone.
I used a demo unit at a T-Mobile store, and was kinda surprised to find it relatively responsive/lag-free, especially with Sense tacked on, given the specs; I can imagine how much it'd fly with a vanilla CM7 ROM on it or something of the sort. I was originally hoping the Dell Venue Pro would fill in as a secondary phone, but I didn't like WP7 so I returned it.
Anyway, I have the chance to get one for like $150 new, and I was just wondering if it's worthwhile using it as a secondary/smaller phone to my G2; while my G2 isn't exactly super-heavy/expensive, I'd probably feel worse losing/damaging it than the Wildfire, and I don't really need the keyboard at work since I don't exactly have the time to really use it. Having a second (decent) Android phone would allow me to play around with experimental stuff with the G2 while I use the Wildfire and still have a functional/available Android phone. I like the overall feel/look/weight/etc to it too - light enough to use with an armband if I wanted to and comfortably take my phone jogging or something. Yes, I know the specs and screen resolution would mean less stuff compatible, but it's not like I even watch Netflix or anything like that on my G2. Are there any major problems with it maybe, particularly ones that can't be fixed by software?
The next cheapest decent phone I can get is the new LG MyTouch for about $50, and while it's better in like every way (screen quality, specs even better than my G2, etc.), the lack of a search button is a real downer, I'm not a fan of the build quality (played around with it and used to have a Optimus V...both feel like toys compared to my G2 or the Wildfire S), and the huge bezel on the bottom is just ugly. And while it's ligther than my G2, it's not much smaller.
And while I could obviously get something better than my G2 and then use the G2 as a secondary phone...there isn't much on T-Mobile that I'm really interested in; I mean, I can upgrade to the Amaze 4G or GSII for about $400, but I don't find either enough of an upgrade over my G2 (unlike the Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Tab 7.7...which are $600+ each, and don't really have a need for either at the moment).
Honestly you'd be better served finding another phone. While most things are fixable with software, unless you're a dev, the gsm models are constant headaches. Don't get me wrong, i like the phone. so far almost everything works OK for me with unofficial CM 7.2 from alquez, and I'm quite pleased with how it's performing now
the one last stumbling block for me now is GPS which I broke by applying patches from here I guess worst case scenario is I'll have to re-flash it again (too bad I did not do backup before applying the GPS patch).
but it was indeed a pain to unlock the bootloader and root it, quite a procedure let me tell you

Mind telling what's so bad about the GSM versions? I'd really like to know, as I kinda close to impluse-buying it yesterday if it really is that bad, are there any other small/light T-Mobile phones you can recommend? Everything else I've seen feels so cheap/plasticky...

How hard was it? I've only dealt with a few phones in terms of rooting and I can't say it was enough to deter me away from the phone itself.
GSM version is a great phone especially running cyanogen.
Everything is running fast and stable.
For the price and form factor its fantastic and very friendly on and in your pocket.

You should probably get the HTC Sensation 4G or the HTC Amaze. I should known how bad the wildfire s was before I bought it

i dont get it how can it be a headache, since from when i bought it, there were only minor problems.... can u give some arguments on what you are telling

As for the thread starter: if you want small phone, with decent capabilities, its phone for you ... though i don't know what is the price range that you want, certainly that the sensation would be better... but it also costs twice the wildfire s ?

Eh, Sensation/Amaze are at least $300 each for me, and are only barely slimmer than my G2 - they're about equal in weight and bigger due to the screen. I understand either would be much better than the Wildfire S...but simply put, I need an Android phone for a few basic functionalities/apps, not some fancy dual-core for games I'll never play with HDMI-output that I'll rarely use (if ever), etc. I also don't like spending much on a phone period, so ~$150 is a great price to me.

While I can technically afford the Sensation, the size/weight of it compared to the Wildfire S is why I'm not really considering it. And unless I'm mistaken, there's not many other decent phones in the same price range that don't feel like they're made of cheap plastic - which is why I'm asking.

galaxy ace would be the only alternative, but it feels cheaper than wfs in hand ...

not super hard, most of the hassle was around unlocking the bootloader which in my case was not very straight forward (and in general I think I hit every corner which I could possible have )

I am using a DZ (european G2) and a wfs as a secondary phone. All I can say is that the wfs is performing pretty good. As I am not using any data on it, the battery life on 2G is more than decent and the handset is quite fast. Right now I am using the latest stock ROM with OC and I am very happy with it.
I guess it also depends on what and how many apps are you planning to install on it. The internal memory is not very big, and it may also slow down the phone. At some point I was using a phone logger that would sync all my phone calls with google calendar and the app would render my phone unusable at times.
If you are planning to use it mainly for phone calls, I definitely recommend it. It is a great phone, way better then the galaxy ace IMO

Yeah, was looking at it earlier, but even if I wanted it I'd be stuck with 2G using it on T-Mobile USA.

Thanks for the reply, went ahead and put a bid on one Wildfire S, hopefully I can get it cheaper than through my friend's T-Mobile discount.
I forgot to mention one thing: the price. I got my wfs brand new for less than 100 bucks from vodafone, so for that price is an amazing device
