Hello all
I previous was able to connect to my works Cisco VPN using VPN Connections However I just upgraded to EC05 (via a method that preserved /DATA) and I cannot get it to work correctly.
Ironically after updating tun.ko I get the message that I am "connected" but none of the traffic seems to be routed via the VPN- its as if I'm surfing the web without the VPN running- in other words I can surf but can't get to any protected areas.
Any ideas?
I'm hoping to avoid a hard reset/fresh install of EC05 but maybe I have to do one to troubleshoot?
EDIT: For whatever reason VPNC Widget seems to work (except after disconnecting I have to reboot to get the internet to work correctly-seems to be a known problem with this app- it does not rewrite DNS upon disconnect) so I guess I will stick with that in the meantime
I love fixing my own problems!!! I would thank myself if that was possible!
Turns out I was using an old version of busybox- once I updated it I was able to use VPN connections again with proper routing!

Title says it all.
All of the 2.2 roms and kernels I have tried will connect to the VPN but must screw up the routes as they shut off my data.
Does anyone have this running?
the only issue i have with "VPN Connections" is that is doesn't pass DNS traffic correctly. hence, i must connect via IP Addy not DNS name. other than that it works fine for me. i'm able to establish a vpn connection then use the WYSE rdc/vnc app to connect to my windows or linux servers ... connnectbot for shell access.
I've also been unable to connect to either a PPTP or IPSec VPN over my 3G connection since upgrading to the official release of 2.2 on my EVO 4G. The connection appears to be established just fine, and the VPN server shows that my VPN client is connected, but I cannot ping to or from the device, nor access any internal resources from it. This is a serious bummer considering that things worked fine under 2.1. Will test over WiFi when I get home. Can't test it at work since we're behind a proxy (which is another gripe I have with Android right now... seriously Google, no proxy configuration options?).
i feel i should clarify the name the application i'm using to establish a vpn tunnel is not the stock android vpn application.
it is called "VPN Connection" http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend

I have some interesting info regarding VPN behavior. With 2.1, of course, it did not work. Here's what I experienced: I rooted my 2.1 with Unrevoked (not a full root) and then I installed OMJ's (8/6?) Froyo and lo and behold, my encrypted PPTP VPN to a MS 2003 server was working perfectly. I assumed that 2.2 resolved the vpn issues. Since I thought 2.2 was a fix, I didn't hesitate to install another ROM. This time, though, I also did a NAND root and installed another 2.2 rom; whose, I don't remember. My VPN was gone. What I discovered was that I COULD connect to an unencrypted MS PPTP server, but still not my encrypted VPN server at work. So, here we are today. I'm running Vael-Pak non-sense rom and after I loaded it I had no vpn, but here's the thing...a couple of days ago I was poking around inside some of the Evo's networking files, I didn't change anything, I just opened them and looked at them with Text Editor, and since then my encrypted PPTP VPN has been working great. I'm very hesitant to reboot my phone because I fear that it won't work anymore. Right now I'm happy.
I'm trying in vain to get VPN connections working too. The only ROM that I had it working with no problems was Cyanogenmod's. All the others don't seem to have it supported in the kernel. Now I'm running a ROM based on the stock 2.2 but haven't found a fix yet.
I'm in the same boat - my pptp vpn worked fine in stock 2.1, but not in stock 2.2...

I can't get a pptp (haven't tried l2tp) to connect from my unrooted 2.2 evo with encryption enabled. I'm trying to connect to my server at home running winxp pro with the default winxp vpn server setup.
Works fine if you disable encryption. But what's the point if it's not encrypted, right? It works fine with encryption using a laptop or my old iphone3G. Seems to be a bug with android.
I'd like to know if someone finds a workaround.
This worked in 2.1 - froyo broke it

I am in the same boat. On CM6 VPN works flawlessly, but it is missing a lot, and kept crashing on me.
On every other ROM and kernel with tun.ko, it says it is connected but no connectivity.
AVA V6 is fast, good battery life, everything works (including hulu, and blockbuster) and very stable, but the only single thing I can't get working is Cisco VPN!!

I am curious, does anyone have VPN working on any Froyo ROM besides Cyanogen?
If so what Rom/kernel are you using?
Interesting observation last night - 4g was temporarily working in sf, and my pptp vpn worked over it. I turned off 4g and retested, pptp vpn didn't work over 3g...

Anybody get the VPN connection working on the rooted 2.2 yet? I am trying to get it working for cisco vpn at work.
i'm using this to connect to our ASA.

Thats what I have installed but it crashs as soon as I click connect. I am using the new 2.2 root method
what ROM are you using?
any other apps crash or act odd on you?
any other weirdness?
i've never had the vpn app FC on me. i just tested it again with the WYSE RDC app. the only issue i have is that it doesn't play nicely with DNS, thus i have to connect to everything via IP.
I've got an EVO running CM6 stable with android-wireless-tether (pre7). I am able to pair/connect to my home PC by setting up a bluetooth PAN in Windows 7. I right click on my device, choose "Connect > Access Point" and it says "Connection Successful". The only thing I get now is "Identifying..." until I am stuck with the good ol' 169.xx... IP address.
I checked the log for the wireless tether app, and it shows:
Enabling NAT rules... done
Enabling IP forwarding... done
Tethering now running... done
error: SIOCSIFFLAGS (Cannot assign requested address)
I've done a little research on the error and tried a few suggestions (rebuild binary/config files, changing the default LAN IP in awt settings) to no avail.
I also tried disabling WiFi and just attempting to share the 3G connection which still isn't working out (same error). Can anyone help me out with this one? I've also tried awt pre8 with the same results.
I had same setup and problem. Started the supper user app and quit app. Powered down phone restarted phone. After restart WiFi tether worked fine. Don't know why .

Just turn on wireless teather and the go to access conections fine androidap and connect to that. Why do you have to use blue tooth am I missing something? Wireless teather is in the settings with CM6 so you dont need an extra app for teather?
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried opening/closing SU app and rebooting, got the same result.
The reason why I am doing it this way is because I have a PC with only a network card (not WiFi). It's about 30/40 ft. from my router. Rather than buying a wireless card or some cable, I'm connecting via bluetooth and sharing my phones WiFi connection.
I understand if I had a WiFi adapter I could just use the built in Hotspot feature, but if I had WiFi, I would rather connect directly to the router.
I'm definitely interested in this too. At work, we have a no-wireless router policy, and I don't really feel like firing it up and have a guy holding a Fluke wireless network analyzer come and find me.
Bluetooth is alright for what I need. Seems to almost be a kernel issue or something. Worked *perfectly* with my N1, even with pre8. The EVO with CM6 stable isnt working. Just as a note, the wifi portion works correctly.
Actually let me rephrase : The bluetooth section does work, I believe there might be an issue related to the dnsmasq dhcp server not being able to serve IPs. The 'Upload' section of the information panel changes, the Green Download section stays 0.00. The client never receives an IP address, and thats about it.
Logcat didnt really show me much of anything critical error-wise, I'm really hoping that I can downgrade/upgrade a kernel in order to support whatever hardware changes there were between the N1 and the EVO.
I checked the wireless router wifi mode, and it no longer works either. 'Started with errors' is what I get now when in the wifi mode. The built-android wireless tether works fine, but I either wish I could hide the ESSID or have a bluetooth option available.
It *seems* related to the kernel, but logcat doesnt mention anything about not being able to load a module, and the wifi-tether app doesnt have a txt log, or does it?
So I'm almost lost on where to begin. I feel like I have tried everything but here we go.
Sgh m919 4.4.2 rooted stock. Rooted via towel root, Knox warranty void 0x0
Plan: unlimited everything (unlimited 4G lte all the time) 2 lines 5gb hotspot for $100
So for a long time I used wifi tether router to create a hotspot for other devices like ps3s and computers to connect to. This would use my unlimited mobile data and wouldn't touch my regular hotspot count. It worked amazingly! But at some point it started to use my regular hotspot and I was directed to the dreaded tmobile upsell page. Well this pretty much ruined my life because I live in a place that provides Internet and won't let you get your own and it's super slow. Like less then 1mb per sec slow. .. So i have been desperately trying to find a work around. I had countless emails with the developer with the end result being him saying here are some vpns people say they have had success with I can help you no further. So i tried those but it did not seem to work at all. I tried using several vpn applications with wifi tether router. Vpn applications with it all built into the app and you just have to hit connect to open vpn. Then I found these guides and tried this method: http://kingoftweaks.blogspot.ae/2014/03/wifi-hotspot-through-vpn.html?m=1
http://digiex.net/guides-reviews/gu...phone-vpn-gateway-bypass-tethering-block.html
but that didn't seem to work either. So i went back to the past and tried using other methods from before rooting my phone. In the past I would use pdanet+ to usb tether a windows 7 laptop and use the Internet connection sharing function to share the Internet connection from pdanet to a router plugged in via ethernet cable. It worked back then and worked this time, for the most part. You have to use hide tether usage level 1 to bypass the upsell page. In the past this wasn't a problem. I could do anything just as if connected to my hotspot. But now I can't get netflix to work on anything but a mobile device. Not my ps3, computers, smart tv, nothing. User agent switchers don't solve the problem. So this gave me another idea. Try to use the computer as a vpn gateway. So i downloaded open vpn client and tried some free vpns. I wasn't using pdanet at this point. I was trying to connect the computer to wifi tether router and basically encrypt all Internet traffic from my isp (tmobile) using a vpn. So if I start the vpn and am connected to the phone via wifi and share the wifi connection to the router I still hit the upsell page or it will keep on trying to load Web pages in the browser but will never load them. So when I use open vpn client on widows 7 it creates it's own network adapter. So i tried to share that to the router and connect another computer. It barely worked, speed was awful according to speedtest.net . While running vpn I can watch netflix after downloading Microsoft silver light on computer running vpn but not very well. So i thought maybe I could use my computer as a vpn server but was unsuccessful. I tried fiddler in the past but all it did was mess with my computer. I tried wireless tether for root users and the treve mod version, this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/how-to-tether-blocking-fix-t2544487 and several other things.
I really need help figuring out how to get tethering working again.
My needs are complicated as well. I wasn't to keep Knox unvoided for one. I as well would like to be somewhat mobile with my phone. I don't want to have to keep it plugged into the computer all the time to have Internet access. Which means even if i get pdanet working with Netflix that's just temporary. Ultimately i would like to use just my phone but know that just may not be possible.
Ultimate goal: wireless tether using just phone with good speeds, ping/latency.
Acceptable goal: wireless tether to computer and share internet connection through router to maintain mobility with phone.
Temporary goal: get netflix working with pda net usb tethering.
I need to be able to use netflix on ps3, computer, and smart tv.
My ideas that I have no idea how to implement.
Use the computer to encrypt data from tmobile, vpn? Proxy? Ssh tunnel?
Use another phone to pick up the wireless tether router hotspot and somehow force pdanet to use the wifi connection of that phone instead of the mobile data it tries to use normally or mask the wifi connection as the mobile data connection or something. Basically use pdanet to share the extra phones wifi connection so I have mobility with my actual phone.
Ps. When using wifi tether router other andriod devices can connect and use application like normal but nothing else.
Can anyone help me get my tethering working again? I need help really bad and would greatly appreciate it.
No one wants to say it, so I will.
You need to get yourself some good old fashioned Internet access from an Internet provider.
Tmobile is on to your data abuse and put a jihad on your data black hole.
Downgrade your Tmo plan and buy into some Internet access from your local provider.
Pp.
Has anyone found a solution to the OPs concern for how to get tethering working again through T-Mobile? It use to be that you could use an app like: Tether (from Clockwork Mod) or EasyTether (from Play Store) to get around T-Mobile's restriction on tethering; however, those don't seem to work anymore (ever with user agent spoofing) - has anyone found a current solution for tethering on T-Mobile?
No.
Pp.
Whatever VPN witchcraft PdaNet+ uses to hide tether usage makes Netflix unusable on a PC. The way around this is to unhide the tether usage, load whatever it is on Netflix you want to watch (once the red circle starts spinning is good enough), then re-hide the tether usage. I don't know if doing the same will let Netflix work properly on your other devices, as I've never tried. I don't have Netflix anymore, so I can't try with my TV's Netflix app.
It's a nuisance, but it's something one just has to put up with if you're using your phone plan as your home internet. I don't understand the reason this happens. Websites still detect your Windows version and browser just fine, yet Netflix thinks you're incompatible for some reason.
FWIW, Amazon Prime doesn't have this problem.
I also don't know why WiFi Tether Router stopped working for you. It works fine for me.
Hello everyone,
as noted in the title of this thread, I cannot connect to L2TP/IPSec VPN Server from my phone (Redmi Note 8 Pro, running MIUI 11.0.3 stock).
I've done extensive troubleshooting and appears that phone never even contacts the server. When i configure everything and toggle the VPN, it will try to connect but never does, and then times out.
I'm watching the logs on the server, nothing appears.
I'm watching tcpdump on the server, no packet is even received from phone.
I've connected to WiFi network from i which i know i can connect to VPN (for example from PC or my MikroTik router) and it cannot even connect from that network.
I've enabled packet sniffer on root MikroTik router to sniff the packets, filtering MAC address of my phone, and guess what... When i click on VPN, it doesn't even try to connect to VPN serever. VPN server IP address doesn't even appear on sniff.
I'm wondering why is this happening, is anyone else having issues with L2TP/IPSec VPN? How do i inform Xiaomi of this issue since I've placed couple of feedbacks back in the day, never received an answer and those issues still persists so i don't even thing they are reading the feedback that is sent to them from phone app.
Hoping to get to the bottom of this!
Any help would be greatly appreciated !
Any chance you can try the OpenVPN app? I used to have an issue with my old phone where sometimes it would say connected but it wouldn't be. With the rn8pro, OpenVPN works every time.
Edit: try posting on the Mi forums for a better chance of a response from someone at Xiaomi
https://c.mi.com/global/forum-2234-1.html
Might not just be Xiaomi....https://github.com/SoftEtherVPN/SoftEtherVPN/issues/571
I would hate having two VPN servers installed at the same time. There are times when i want to connect my root mikrotik router to VPN server i question to forward all web traffic via VPN, unfortunately, OpenVPN support is very limited on MikroTik , there are new cipher suites missing and with new OpenVPN servers in place it's impossible to connect tik to OpenVPN.
I know however that OpenVPN app works great with android, but it's weird that native L2TP doesn't seem to be working at all.
I could fall back to PPTP maybe. Both Android and MikroTik works flawlessly with PPTP. But... It's PPTP..
Thanks, i will try posting to Xiaomi forums as well.
