bacon-bits owned my phone few weeks ago, always wondered why - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So... I seen baconbits shortly after rooting and flashing, I installed baconbits, phone booted, than right from start up I get forceclose on every app and process... than I tried to do a backup, I got an error on cwm so than I wiped data and tried to reflash fresh and start over, that would not work. So I recovered the stock froyo and fixed cwm than I flashed fire and ice cm7 rom.. everything has been fine since I fixed it.. it was still frustrating tho..
But when ever I go to my boot loader before recovery, I get this green font that says blah blah blah not found (its trying to locate files to install that stock froyo, but after it doesn't locate the file I'm free to access recovery or do whatever.. is there a way to delete that "cannot find" ****, it takes about 20 seconds from holding power and volume down to give me control.. that's why I want it gone its annoying.. even if I can't fix it, I guess its not a major setback..

thats internal feature of Hboot... it looks for pc10img.zip on sd card.... not at all an error....
and it can be useful in a situation where you mess up your recovery and rom ... you would be able to save your phone via that ....
also its used to go back to stock rom and unroot when needed

+1 for hispeedword. Best possible answer right there - that's exactly what's going on. Use ROM Manager to reboot straight to recovery from now on and it will skip HBOOT so you don't have to wait through all of that. CM and most other roms also allow that option when you hold down the power button.
Now, you said "shortly after rooting and flashing" - what exactly did you flash? You do know baconbits is ONLY meant to be used with the stock rom right? The exact one that you rooted and that came on your phone. If you flash ANY other rom - even a 'stock rooted rom' then you run into tons of errors when flashing baconbits.

Dont flash baconbits, its not needed

Yeah I was being stupid, I didn't even know at the time when my phone messed up that it was from me flashing baconbits...until I did a back up, than flashed a different rom and reflashed baconbits, lmao..
so your saying to use baconbits if you rooted but didn't flash custom roms, than it works fine?
I'm thinking of switching to a sense rom, I don't even know why.. what are the pros/cons of sense? Thanks.

Assuming you've already answered your question up there, sense roms usually consume more battery life because of the plethora of constantly active widgets. However, if you're VERY social or buisiness, Id recommend it. The battery drain only cuts down on a few hours, depending on your usage, cpu governers and radio, and for that, you get a lot of functionality from the rom. Plus the new elegant blues ported theme for sense roms is just gorgeous. I also like the whole manual link to facebook in the contacts. Still hoping for a port for that xP try it out.

[Q] OK, so what am I missing....

First off, thanks for all the help so far, this site is the best!
I just rooted my Evo using the unrevoked3. Had a little bit of trouble, nothing major, and overall it was a success. I also installed ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, based on suggestions found here.
The problem is, I'm not quite getting how to flash the roms... I downloaded one through ROM manager, and it seemed to work, but I didn't notice a single thing different. I tried to install CyanogenMod, and it downloaded, but it would always fail during the install.
I tried downloading on my computer, then moving the .zip file to my sdcard. Then I select "install rom from sdcard" and everything seems to go ok, I end up having to go into recovery and "rollback" my phone to the stock rom, because twice now I've almost bricked my phone.
Really, what I'm wanting is a setup like that "Kuma Style" one (without the animal), and a different bootscreen. I have spent a lot of time searching around, and it seems simple enough, I just seem to be missing some integral part of the proccess.....
Any help is appreciated!

I am not familiar with Unrevoked, but just running unrevoked doesn't completely root your phone. You need to do the second parts of rooting which unlocks nand.
Ah, so there is more to do. Maybe that's the problem then.... *off in search of how to unlock nand

Unlocking nand just unlocks something so that you can save full image backups. That wouldn't lead to your phone not installing a ROM right, it's just something you'll want just in case things go wrong. So still finish the root and get nand. But that's not what you're missing here.
Possible error: Did you wipe settings &factory reset and wipe cache in ClockworkMod before flashing the ROM? I think that could lead to some problems.
Try flashing the alternative Amon Ra recovery through rom manager (will state that rom manager won't be fully functional unless clockworkmod is installed) and loading the roms onto the sd card then reboot into recovery. Amon Ra seems to work better imo than clockworkmod. When you're talking about something like "kuma style," those are themes that are usually flashable in recovery also. The boot animation could alse be flashable in recovery but if not, there are instructions on how to adb push custom ones onto your phone.

Gah! So I downloaded the enamored theme, moved it to the sd card, then went to ROM Manager and selected "Reboot into Recovery"and selected the enamored.zip. It said the install was a success, but when I rebooted, the phone stuck on the bootanimation. I tried restarting a couple times, but it always gets stuck in the same place.
I booted into recovery (if thats waht you call the hold the volume button down while pushing the power button trick), and selected recover, then nandroid, then a time under yesterdays date. Phone recovered fine.
WtH am I doing wrong? I realize I am way out of my league, but I'm not completely retarded. Again, GAH!
Are u wiping data and cache when flashing a ROM? I have been stuck at the CM6 boot animation when coming from a different Rom and not wiping.

When you flash a theme, it could take up to 2-5 minutes to finish. This occurs during the boot animation. I flash themes all the time and I notice it's usually around 2-3 minutes wait. Maybe faster for others but that's just been my experience. If it's over 5 minutes than there's probably something wrong with your zip file or maybe clockworkmod recovery doesn't flash it properly. Also, it could be an issue with the kernel you're using...I noticed on kingklick cfs #10, I was stuck on boot animation for about 7 minutes and so I reverted back to the stock kernel and the theme was applied within 3 minutes.
ok, apparently I've been missing that step...
where do I do that again?

I waited a good long time. Am I at least headed in the right direction? Sorry to sound whiny, it's just that there's a few little things I want to do, and I'm intimidated as hell by actually doing any command line, so I'm hoping to avoid that- aka riding someone else's coattails
First, which rom are you using and is it stock or custom kernel? Are you using clockworkmod recovery? Try flashing the alternative amon ra recovery in rom manager then boot into recovery and apply your selected theme.
if you are using a stock rom it must say stock 2.2 deodexed
if it is not a deodexed rom.. of any kind.. then themes will say they flashed but they will either brick your phone or not work at all.
and stop using clockwork.... just use amon ra

I could be way off here, but I've seen some people who rooted using unrevoked, and run into trouble flashing things (or maybe I'm thinking of trouble with terminal commands) and it turned out they couldn't find flash_image anywhere in there SD card, Which should be installed (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
I saw a lot of reports of this in chainsDDs superuser thread, if I remember correctly. They had to install flash_image.img (which is a file available on toasts part 2 root tutorial)
I obviously could be wrong about this, I've never used unrevoked, I rooted via toast, and his method included everything.
@ V_lestat
Thanks for the heads up about themes having the ability to brick your phone if not deodexed, I never knew that. I flash roms and kernels a lotbut never messed with themes much.
At OP, have a look at virus Rom thread. It's a great ROM, and he has built some different themes to go with it. Beautiful stuff, great ROM, great thread.
Good luck

See, some people say use clockwork, some people say Amon.
I looked around a lot beforehand, and people kept saying to use unrevoked, so I did. Now people say I should have used Toast?
Thanks for everybodies help so far, I am reading everything and taking it all in.
I Don't Mean to add any Confusion to your situation. I am new to this also.. I went with unrevoked also and when I booted into recovery with clockwork mod. I did a nand back up first to make sure if anything went wrong I could just boot back into recovery and load my backup. Then I wiped my Data & Davlick Cache all of the caches. Then I installed my Rom and it worked like a charm. I will add it did take about 5 to 7 mins to boot only on the first time though. I hope that helps some as to the process and what to do first don't give up XDA rocks with the smartest mind on the planet.

If you are using ROM Manager to "install zip from card" it presents you with a dialog with two unchecked check boxes. One of them is "wipe data + cache". make sure you check it before hitting ok on that dialog.
If you are manually booting into recovery then in the recovery choices you will see one that says wipe data and one thats says wipe davlik cache. first do a nandroid back up then wipe those data and davlik then install the rom. By the way are you just installing a theme or a full rom that might be the issue i am just wondering maybe a senior member can help on wether you can install a theme over a rooted stock theme or not?
Success!
I went into ROM Manager, backed up current ROM, went into recovery manually, wiped the cache, then installed from zip, and it worked! I tried a cool theme I found, and I like it, but it seemed old. I just installed fresh, and the enamored theme, and all is working great!
A couple more questions,
1) how do I get my contacts back?
2) How do I get my apps back onto my phone? I have them backed up on appbrain, but I haven't been able to find how to get them back to the phone.
So far, I've tried a couple of ROM's (and/or themes) and I've ended up flashing back to my own "safe" one, until I figure these two things out.
A tremendous thanks to everyones help! I seriously couldn't have done it without you guys
Edit; Oh yeah, one other thing. How do I delete the other nand backups? There's like 5, and I need to free up some memory. I tried going in and selecting one to see if it gave me the option to delete, but I didn't see anywhere that it did.... Got it. Search feature to the rescue

[Q] Bricked Incredible and can't flash into recovery

So i rooted my brother's incredible and then he started installing system updates and now everything force closes. I put the zip onto the sd card but when I try to reboot into recovery, the screen blacks out with white lines down the sides...any suggestions? I told him that I would just probably have to find a way to take his phone back to stock...I'm a n00b myself so still trying to figure this out.

It sounds like it's an slcd screen. Did you use the latest unrevoked? I think that comes with an slcd compatible clockwork.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
This is what i will guess happened...because it happened to me too.
1. when you rooted his phone, you never checked that recovery was actually worked.
2. It was when you tried to recover is when you discovered it didn't work.
As the previous problem is probably because of the slcd screen. Unrevoked 3.3 supports installing recovery to the slcd versions of the phone.
3. After you gave your brother the phone back, a few hours later the nagging "system update avaliable" pop-up well, popped-up and he in stalled it thus erasing the root.
you can simply unroot it again using Unrevoked, but you will simply continue getting the message unless u are familiar enough with adb or terminal to make it stop.
The first thing you need to do after you re-root it is download Rom Manager from the marketplace and BACK UP the current setup...
If your brother really likes the feel of the Sense UI then you can DL the Virtuous Rom straight from the app. Plus the Virtuous app includes the modded flash and hulu apps.
Or you can try many of the other avaliable Roms in the app. I reccomend buying the full app btw b/c its a life saver...or at the very least leave the ads on.
also..your phone is not "bricked". It is a simple matter of removing removing the battery and putting it back in to get you on the road to recovery...pun intended.
I also HIGHLY reccomend using the search function.

[Q] I stuffed up. What do I do?

Hi, first time posting here.
I have a bit of a unique problem or so I've heard. So I was an idiot and decided to flash a Virtuous ROM over the WiFi via ROM Manager on my Desire Z. Previous to this it was rooted and was running CM 7.1 RC1 and was all fine. When I flashed the Virtuous Sense Rom (Not unity, the one before it in ROM Manager), it flashed, what I thought was fine. However, when I actually got into the phone, it said everything was crashing and would go into a boot cycle. Then for some stupid reason I just reflashed the 1.3.4 or whatever ROM back onto (The one you're meant to downgrade to). At this moment in time, I can't do anything. When I'm in the bootloader of the phone itself, I can't scroll up or down to the recovery option, so I can't flash through that. I've tried re-rooting the phone (Or that process), hoping that it would work. At this point in time, it keeps popping up errors at /data/local/tmp/psneuter
Note: I was following the CM7 rooting guide thing.
Anyway, I hope someone'll be able to help me out of this stupid stupid thing that I've done.
THanks!
EDIT: Okay, well, going through the CM7 rooting guide a fourth time seems to have fixed it. It's all fine now. On another note, how do you change the Virtuous Unity lock screen to something else? I'm not really a fan of the Sense 3.0 lockscreen.
You should not need to re-root after flashing any custom ROMs.
Also, I would not do any more ROM flashing if clockworkmod is not properly installed, or you don't know how to use it.
Did you bother to wipe data and cache? You didn't mention it. If you didn't that's your problem

[Q] Calkulin's Rom won't allow recovery..

So I I've had 2 different recoveries so far that have worked fine.. both came from Rogue though. One was from the 1.5 kernel (Hitman) which installed CWM Touch recovery, the other came with the normal recoveries based off CW 5.0.2.7. They were working fine until I installed Calkulin's Rom(2.8.1). Not sure if they're just incompatible or what, but when I go to recovery it shows the background image of the recovery but none of the options show up. It shows for about half a second and then it goes back to the original boot screen, then to the 2nd screen and turns on. So it basically skips right through the recovery and reboots. Do I need a new Rom or can I fix this? I really like the battery life and visuals of Calkulin's Rom and would love to be able to keep it.
EDIT: One more thing.. Since I installed the ROM, I've been getting market error 492. It doesn't allow me to install anything in the market..
I haven't tried a full wipe yet, so I guess I'll try that and then see how that works with the recovery and Rom..
I did the same thing to my phone this week, and I'm running Blazer, so i'm sure it has nothing to do with either ROM.
Not sure how I caused it but with so many folks running both without this error, I'm guessing that your issue (like mine was) was probably some how self induced.
I flashed back to stock and started over, and things have been working great. Might be worth a shot flashing back, or restore a backup and start fresh.
Haven't seen the market error before. I'm sure someone here has
Good Luck
If you got it off here, could you show me which stock you flashed..?
Everything you need is in the Epic 4G Touch Android Development section

Watch the videos by Qbking77 They walk you thru everything step by step. (I hear his video intro rif every time I close my eyes now so you've been warned) Makes it super easy.
I would read everything you can and watch the videos before you get in too deep. I've had this phone since December, and just flashed my 1st ROM this week cause I've been reading up, and learning all I could before I jumped in the pool.
Well I've done all this with 2 phones before but I've never had this happen.. normally I just get the Rom and I'm good to go..
I think I must've gone wrong somewhere when I originally rooted through a stock rom.. It already seems to be more respondful.

Try booting while holding the volume up and power button.
If that does not work, flash recovery from rom manager, and that should get you into recovery to flash whatever kernel/recovery u want.
I've done all that.. None of it works.. I'm currently ODIN'ing Factory Stock Rom with root. Hopefully after that I can redo all of these and eventually end up with a working, corresponding Rom and kernel..

If your not running any scripts then I would try fresh download wipe all except sdcard battery and rotation and reflash don't flash any thing else until after you boot up then flash each additional item that you like one at a time rooting between each one that way you can find out what if anything is causing your problem hope that helps
ive used the wipe on EVERY options.. even wipe sdcard, battery and rotate screen option...
I dont flash any extras then the actual rom..

Then I would try a fresh download you may have a bad copy
I had the same issue on a replacement Evo, it had never been rooted. Eventually it wouldn't boot up at all, even after 20+ tries. I took it into the Sprint store and they ordered a replacement (they did check for s-off).
I would try running an RUU. If the problem persists, then do whatever you have to do to get s-on so you can get a replacement. I'm not familiar with the new rooting and unrooting methods, haven't done it since FroYo. If running an RUU will revert you to s-on, then I'd use an easily rootable RUU in case it solves your problem. Good luck!
Like plainjane said. In case you need to unroot and have it replaced, I'd follow captain_throwbacks thread at the mik-mik to downgrade radios and hboot to froyo (radio 2.15.00.11.19 hboot 2.10) before your phone becomes completely unalterable, then you'll still be root, and if the unthinkable happens, you'll also be in good shape for sprint checking your setup. Look in the general sub-forum,... much talk and info about this. Look for info from Captain_Throwback.

how long have yo let it go? Iv had a similar problem when i boot to a new rom for the first time. it goes through the splash screen, then to bootanimation, then back to splash then animation again. this usually happens 1-2x then once its all up, settled in and i have my settings and apps reapplied it doesnt happen again. Just my experience.
the only problem is....
Im not on sprint.. heck im not even in the U.S.
Im up in Canada. I bought this phone for my media player instead of an ipod, which is more (got this phone for $50) and for taking pictures... If its dead (i hope its not) then its no big deal...
also, i have a habit of backing up my important info and wiping my SDcard when install a new rom..
im kinda getting fed up with this constent reboots..
im thinking if I flash the stock RUU, this would unroot my phone.. then I will reroot it.. would this be a good idea??
I read that the lastest RUU cant be unlocked yet.. so which is the latest version that can be unlocked and s=ff?

IIRC, after i flashed this recovery, i started having these issues... before I was on the revolutionary recovery and didnt have any issues..
