Just picked up a 16gb card and I am wondering do I have to do anything special or just copy everything from the old one on to it and plug it in?

I'm not sure if it is required, or if this is even the correct procedure....however, when I got my new 16gb sd card, I put it right in the phone, and then used the phone to format the sd card. I believe the option to format is in menu>settings>sd and phone storage or something like that. Once the card was formatted, I then transferred all my filed to the new card. I've experienced no problems at all. You could also use your computer to format the card FAT32 before you copy your stuff to it. Won't hurt anything.

Yes he's right, but you should be able to just put it in and it'll work regardless

how do i do it . new to this phone
Simply put it into a card reader, and into a computer. Then find the drive with the card, right click it and click format.

However, I wouldn't think that you would want to format a memory card. I remember hearing somewhere that it could be bad. However it could have been formatting or defragmenting (i can't remember which, but both seems a little unusual to me to do with a card). I suppose it is safe to use windows to format the card, but an alternative is to plug it into the computer, select everything on it, and just delete it. Then again, thats my opinion.
You can't defragment the card, but you can format it. There's no reason that I would suggest a regular format over a quick format though...
Regular format just does a chkdisk i think, and there is no need for that in a card

There shouldn't be a reason for format the card to be used with the phone. All the cards I've used, I just put in the phone and used without having to do anything to the card.
I have a rooted phone with an 8gb sd card in it where i store clockworkmod recoveries, backups, ROMs, many apps, media of course etc etc. So if ever I were to change the SD card in the phone, what is the correct procedure to do so such that I don't screw up the phone?
Has anybody else gone through this recently? Reason I ask is I am going to order a 32gb sd card (I believe up to 32 is supported) shortly.
Thanks
Nothing bad happened to me. My 8gb card no longer works so I had to replace it with my 2gb that came with it. There's no procedure with swapping sd cards in the phone, but you may wanna copy all the contents of your previous card to the desktop of your computer and transfer them to your new 1. If you reformatted your previous card to fat32 then do so with your new one. Pop it in and let it rip.

Thanks! Seems easier than I was afraid it might be!
Soo, just copy and paste and put new card in? Is that it?
Yes, 32 Gb cards are supported. Make sure the new SD is formatted FAT32.
Don't remove or install any SD while device is powered on - unmount the SD, then power down to remove/reinstall SD.
Copy contents of old SD to PC so you'll have a backup - then copy to new SD, put in device, power on.
Noteworthy is if you use an AOSP ROM, many of those interact with SD during boot, so if you simply replace old with new and it isn't formatted FAT32 and/or do not have the contents of the old card on it, you will bootloop.
Recommend making period backups of SD to PC - monthly or some frequency meaningful to you ~ so you have a backup if/when SD card fails.
I have a 16gb sd card and I have notice that I am now getting an error on the card and now it is showing read only status...Why is this and what can I do to correct this issue.

Are you rooted? If so, what ROM?
I've come across this on Fresh 3.2. But I don't think it is the ROM's fault. I noticed I got that error every time I used the HTC Bookmark widget. For mine, it gave me that error then said sd card is damaged. (I'm using the stock sd card.)
Try to format your sd card. Make sure to save your files first, since it will delete everything. Also, when you go to format it, connect your phone as a disk drive, then right click your sd card and click format. Then select a long format. This will take a while.
Also, what I did was delete the Bookmark folder on my sd card. (Just in case.)
Lastly, check if the card is securely in the slot. It may have moved.
Hope this helps, let me know what happens.
Thanks for the response, but no, I am not rooted...I fixed the issue myself...I actually scanned the SD card for problems from my pc and it fixed and recovered the bad sectors ..My card is back working normally.

I had this issue on a 32gb card and this did the trick for me. Just go to Menu/Settings/SD&PhoneStorage. Then pull down the notification bar and tap where it tells you that the sd card has an unexpected problem, while it is working to solve it quickly tap Unmount SD Card on the previous screen a few times, this should allow you to format the card to the phones specification. That should do it.
I just got a new SD card and would like to replace my old one. Is there a safe way of doing this? Is it just a matter or moving what data files I want from the older one to the new and that's it?
Also, how do I know what apps are using the sd card to store their data and what apps are using the internal memory?
just copy everything from the old SD card to the empty folder in the PC
then copy all the files from the PC back to the new SD card
I'm going to need to format it to fat32, right?

well most SD cards are sold pre-formatted as FAT32
only the newer 64 GB and up SD cards are formatted differently

When you plug in the USB to your Computer. Go to your phone and pull down the notifications bar. Press the USB noticification and press Connect Storage to PC. Then go to MY COMPUTER and look at your USBs. There should be 2 recognized USB. From there, You can find out which one is your Internal or SD card.
Well I have a new version of CWM Mod, and apparently when you format the sd-card, it no longer formats the inner sd card but your external sd card. I was really pissed as I lost all my data I had saved, but it also managed to screw up my sd card. Neither of my computers recognize my SD Card and I have no idea how I can go about restoring it. My phone can detect the sd card but it will say its corrupt randomly. So I'm guessing CWM formatted the card in a really screwed up way. Any suggestions brahs?
I'll even try to mount the sd card on CWM but it wont be able to mount it. It's a shame to waste a 32 gig sd card like this
Have you tried to format through the phone storage? Menu/settings/storage/format

Only gives me the option to mount or unmount the SD card
How old is the SD card? This phone is know for eating up the 32 GB cards. I had one for less than 3 weeks and it did the same. I use trwp but there is a thread about cards and our misfortunes with the 32 GB.

Make sure you card is not in exfat. CWM will not read cards in exfat, I had the same problem. If it is you are going to need to format it to fat 32. Most 32gigs sd cards and higher come in exfat now. You are most likey going to have to do it on the computer also it cant be done from CWM.

Yes but my computer won't even detect the SD Card. It was fine and dandy up until yesterday when I hit format on CWM on the SD Card thinking I was formatting the internal storage (since it's labelled /sdcard) but it formatted the actual SD. Windows won't detect my Micro SD and neither will my Mac. However if I put the SD card into my phone and connect via USB, it shows up.

You pressed format /sdcard, and it formatted your extsd? That's a pretty serious bug, so thanks for the heads up. What version of CWM are you running?
Op. I did the same thing a long time ago. I have gotten into the habbit of removing the sd card when I am formatting with a custom recovery. I also back up the sd to my pc and reformat the sd when changing roms. A bit off topic but I also wipe system before flashing a new rom. So far I have avoided many of the issues mentioned day after day. Maybe I am lucky but my wierd habits have been successful so far.

Did you manage to fix the problem though? Not to be rude but I'm looking for solutions towards this specific situation, not advice on what to do next time :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:

5.8 something. It's weird because it allows for both internal and external SD use. When you backup the first open is to save to external then its internal. First version of CWM i've ever used with such an option.
For anyone wondering about a solution, I used an android 2.3 device which actually has a format option for the SD card and now my computers recognize it again. Life is good
