So im annoyed with my phone today nothing seems to want to work, So I am now wanting to use the Stock 2.2, Could someone point me in the right dirrection, Currently using HBOOT 0.92 and Sense 2.2
Perhaps this would help?
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html
What ROM are you using at the moment? If you're on HBOOT 0.92 then chances are you're on stock 2.2 already...
Currently running HTC Sense 2.2 But im looking for Android Stock, So OpenDesire im looking for, Found 2 links to sites for downgrading the boot loader, but there so im at a wall after that I can follow unrevoked instructions for root
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ahhh right!! OpenDesire is probably your best bet as it's compiled for the Desire as opposed to being ported from the N1...I followed this thread to get back to HBOOT 0.80 and then used unrEVOked to root...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741672
Should the link on that thread not work, download this file and rename it to PB99IMG and then continue
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip
So I downloaded that file
Stuck it on the SD card as the name that was menetioned, Booted with volume down pressed, And now it says Update failed! So im errr confussed as to what I did wrong.
Try this one...
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
I had the same issue recently but it may have been the wrong file...not tried since as I'm rooted now
That seems to have worked
So now I go about using unrevoked to get root access?
and then I go about changing to the OpenDesire room?
Links to instructions would be nice
EDIT: Trying to use unrevoked 3 and it doesnt seem to want to work
help required -.-
Okay, I'm attempting to gain root access, basically I followed
# Arrow# [GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G
I flashed my phone back to the 2.1 froyo version, but now I am stuck, when I reboot my phone with unrevoked it automatically selects the first option HBOOT with no input from me.
I THINK this may have to do with the fact that I can't get the HBOOT driver's installed. I can't find where the driver's should be installed when rebooted. So now I'm stuck on FROYO 2.1, with no root access. I know that getting to 2.1 is the hardest part of root, but I need to know how to get the phone rooted. Please if anyone can post info, or has had a similar problem please post here if you can help me.
Did your phone originally have 3.30 on it? If so, you need to flash the leaked 3.30 rom back, then follow the instructions about how to turn S-OFF with hboot 2.02.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828437
Where can I find instructions on flashing 3.3 I'm not even sure how I flashed 2.1
bump, if no one can help me get my phone rooted, can you at least let me know how to get it back to normal, so I have the built-in flashlight app etc.
i never thought i would need help with rooting, but i have the same problem. i have boot .97. which should make it easy. i am stock 2.1 and i am trying to flash a pc36img.zip but it simply wont load. it goes all the way to checking, and dumps me back at the hboot. no idea what i am doing wrong. i will try some troubleshooting now. ?!?!
edit i now have .79. trying to flash rooted pc... holding 3.29 now. wish me luck
same problem. goes from checking straight back to hboot. no idea at all.
Hello there xda-devs!!
I own an htc desire A8181 (amoled i think) and i fell into the temptation to root it. The problem is that i updated OTA into 2.2 froyo and my hboot now is 0.93.00001 on which the unrevoked method wont work (at leat for me it did not, as it showed : "validation error: backup cid is missing" ). I have installed the modified drivers and my desire is unbranded. I was hoping to find a method to root without losing any data or settings and since everyone showed as an alternative hboot downgrade and custom rom, so i thought " what if i downgraded hboot but i did not flash a new rom ", but the question is "is it possible?"
As you may have figured out, i dont know much about rooting/flashing etc, although i have some experience from flashing kaiser and some others, but i am willing to learn. If anyone could give me a hint/link/suggestion or solution to my problem it would be gratefully appreciated
PS thank you in advance and sorry for my english

AFAIK, the latest unrevoked works fine with the 0.93.00001 - quite sure I read this in one of the threads.

Thanks for the quick response! Actually these posts were the first that i read when i first thought of rooting and i believe that i have correctly followed the steps of the how to for the unrevoked (version 3.22 straight from the unrevoked site) and i tried twice on different computers(both running win xp home x86). As for the alternatives on benko's tut, none of them supports OTA 2.2 froyo...
After thought and some reading, I decided that I will downgrade to 2.1, root using unrevoked and then flash to prerooted froyo. Actually, since the point is not to lose settings or data, does anyone know a safe way to back up everything and restore them to the new rom?
I have the same model as you mate and the latest unrevoked worked for me, I downloaded the one straight from their website.

Had you also updated OTA with froyo? If yes then why doesn't it work for me? I am sure that the phone is unbranded. Maybe it's something else and not hboot? My current specs are:
*Hboot:: 0.93.001
*Radio: 5.11.05.27
*Rom: 9.29.405.2 (got the update a week ago)
The only thing that I did not follow in the unrevoked guide, was that I didn't select hboot while loading the drivers, because I could not, no matter how many times I pressed the volume down button.I just waited for it to change to usb plug. Could that be the problem?

Something else I noticed the first time I tried with unrevoked, was that in the revoked window it showed "triumph" for a moment and then it rebooted for the last time and then it showed "validation error..". Strange is that it never showed it again not even on the 2nd or 3rd try...What could that mean?

Thanks for the tip, but this is about BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON while my desire is PVT1 SHIP S-OFF and it says that these are able to root but not flash a Rom, while I can't even root.. and the errors do not match..
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you're S-OFF now then you don't need to root - if anything you might be already!
As you hadn't said anything about the rest of the HBOOT I thought I'd mention it but I'm on 0.93 and can root with no issues
And what does it mean? I am already root and I don't know it? And why does then the unrevoked method not work and where is the superuser app?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If the Superuser app isn't there then you're not rooted, so that clears that up...
Go read the S-OFF thread in Development and post a query on there. It sounds like you may have a facotry unlocked bootloader which is extremely rare but best go and confirm it in the forum
Ok. I'm going now. Thank you Eddy and the others for your great help
*forgot to mention: the s off I wrote was after the failed tries with unrevoked(before I hadn't noticed if it was on or off) also the phone was destined to be a demo in a store*

try installing the HTC sync drivers and then remove HTC sync and try again.
If possible switch to Ubuntu and root, its much better.
I have already installed the HTC sync drivers and removed the HTC sync, but I will try reinstalling..You think that through Linux it might succeed?

[edit]: tried again in windows removing reinstalling etc. and in slax live cd. Still no luck as the "validation error: backup cid is mising" wont stop appearing
[Second edit] I'm root now. Followed turkeys' tut
Hi I recently tried using unrevoked 3.22 and it really didnt seem to work as I got a "validation error: backup cid is mising". However after a reboot I found myself in clockworkmod recovery, so that part seemed to work. However straight afterwards I tried to start the phone, I discovered had no access to SD card and any attempt to access phone via USB also gone, it seems Bluetooth is also gone. However I got the SD card back again using FASTBOOT, has anyone got any ideas how I could possibly get USB back?
Hello cletus. I may not know the solution to your problem, but usually posting some further info about your device(HBOOT, radio etc) and the exact steps you made before that problem, might help someone that would like to help
I really hope that you find a solution to your problem

Hey there! Found a solution: usb brick fix guide
hey there,
just got a desire yesterday. currently have a rooted hero, so im not exactly a beginner, but im completely stumped on how to root my desire.
its o2 branded with hboot 0.93 on 2.2
cannot use unrevoked, it comes up with a 'failed to unlock nand flash?' error.
i believe this is because it needs to be downgraded first
ive followed the goldcard tut, as well as the downgrade tut
found on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
however, i get a 'main version is older' error when trying to flash the .zip created by the downgrade.
really want to do this, so any help would be appreciated.
http://revolutionary.io/
But read documentary page very carefully before doing anything!
thanks for that link.
i had seen that previously but saw the public beta, and the warnings and didnt think i should mess with it!
looking at the documentation, it says that it supports the desire with hboot 0.93.
is it safe to assume that because my desire has 0.93, that conventional methods wont work, and that only 'revolutionary' will?
revolutionary is absolutely safe, used is MANY times and so have a million others.
instead of rooting, just use revolutionary to S-OFF, then flash recovery during the process (it asks you if you want to), then backup your ROM, do a full wipe and then flash anyone that you want, or flash superuser.zip to root. either way is good
revolutionary worked great, thanks alot it was just what i was after.
will be downloading a custom rom now
just discovered that the earpiece is messed up, so will be needing to replace that
i suppose it gives me a reason to open it up lol
personally I'd send to HTC, that way you know it was done correctly
if the phone was new, i would.
but its used and cant be bothered with the hassle
the part is cheap, and when it comes to things like changing earpieces etc, i find it easy
I have a new(used) HTC EVO 4g. I am trying to root it before I activate it. I was following directions (can't post link as a noob, but) 4-GUIDE-WIP-How-to-achieve-S-OFF-after-unlocking-2-18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark
and successfully unlocked the bootloader and removed the watermark.
However, when I get to the actual rooting step, it appears that either unrevoked is gone, or having some issue (or blocking me!) as I get 403 Forbidden errors. I have done an exhaustive search (including on this site, where I found someone had posted the file in dropbox but I get a 404 error on that one) and I cannot find either the unrevoked package or any other way to root my evo!
I would be very grateful for some help. Here are my specs:
android 2.2
baseband 2.15.00.11.19
software version 3.70.651.1
When I am in the bootloader menu, I see:
Supersonic evt2-3 Ship S-ON
HBOOT 2.10.0001
(I do not have the watermark saying "locked" or "unlocked")
Sorry to be a noob, but I have rooted several phones before but I just have no clue without the software...
As a side note- here are files I have found and managed to download (if there is a way to use them or if I haven't already used them to get this far): HTCDriver 3.0.0.0007, unrevoked-forever.zip, (I don't think this is the same as unrevoked3, which I need, but correct me if I am wrong) revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip, pc36IMG.zip (but not sure where i got this one from, so not sure what it is an image of.)
Get it activated first.. Then root it..

Is that really necessary? I could swear I read somewhere in the step-by-steps that it wasn't necessary to activate first. Since it will cost me $35 to activate it and the $35 to reactivate my existing phone if I can't get this rooted, I really have no desire to activate yet. Plus seeing as the problem I am having is in accessing the website I need to go to download the files for rooting, I can't see why activating would make any difference?
Rooted!

Okay, I actually fixed it myself--- Still have no idea what is going on with unrevoked site-- either it is my ISP or the site is bad. Either way, I finally found another way to root. Here on this site, I found a rooting method that was older, HBOOT 2.10 SOFF, and that worked fine for me!
(Wanted to post my solution so if anyone else found this thread while having the same problem, they would be able to fix it also.) Post was titled: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Goodbye Stranger - Upd. 02.25.11

The Unrevoked site is down.
I must point out that "YOU WERE LUCKY", as that root method only works on the older Evos with the old hardware. It has been known to brick the newer Evos, as you could have easily done if you had the new hardware. Without Unrevoked, the safest method to root the phone would be to update it to one of the later builds (Gingerbread) and either use Revolutionary or the HTCdev site, depending on the build to unlock the bootloader. Then flash a custom recovery followed by a superuser.zip file.
Yikes!

Yikes! Wow, glad I was a lucky one! Not surprised I have an older Evo, I got it off ebay.
I actually had started with Revolutionary, but my HBOOT was 2.18 (I think) and that only worked with 2.16 and 2.17. So then I went and downgraded to the 2.10, etc....
Just in case I need to know in the future, is the unrevoked site down temporarily or permanently?

I don't know for sure, but since mostly everyone is now on Gingerbread builds and very few are still using Froyo, don't be surprised if that root method is never up again.
