Well, something strange happened and i have no idea what the prob is
yesterday i installed a new kernel for my gnex and made a backup (using CWM) before flashing. Today i decided to go back to the previous kernel so i just went to recovery and restored from the backup. It installed successfully and then i rebooted my phone twice just to be sure everything was working and it was untill 4-5 hours later, I was playing a game (temple run) when suddenly the phone turned off and restarted by itself, i though maybe the game crashed and its restarting but i kept waiting for an hour but the phone was just stuck at the google logo. After waiting, i decided to go to recovery and flash a new kernal or restore but when i went to the bootloader and selected recovery, the phone didnt go into recovery but its stuck in google loop again. so somehow i think the recovery has been deleted of something like that because it gets stuck in loop if i go to recovery :/
i am on 4.0.3 codenamed android rom
Thanks
EDIT: I have already tried removing the battery for some time but still i am not able to enter recovery. i thought recovery was to prevent such things :$
You should probably use search next time. It's happened to quite a few people (myself included).
Use fastboot/ODIN to flash stock rom again.

Thanks but i wont be able to recover my data using this right?:/
No I don't think so, it sucks. I thought they had fixed this bug in 4.0.3 though which is strange. I lost my data twice within a month because of this, when I was on 4.0.2 (or maybe 4.01). Haven't had it since I rooted and updated.
Try flashing the recovery again. Maybe it will work.

Use the Odin files for 4.0.4. Why are you looking for 4.0.3?

What happens when you boot CWM?
In order to recover anything, you need to be booted either into Android or CWM.
Maybe try using the "no-wipe" odin files, which may allow you to either boot into the ROM or allow you to boot CWM, and then you can retrieve your data. However, if this does work, I would recommend you wipe right after you retrieve your data, then restore your files, as you may have issues later on running with that data on your device.

thanks for your quick reply mate
I am not able to boot into recovery. When i select enter recovery from bootloader then it just loops on the google logo. When i try to reinstall cwm then it fails everytime with the error i mentioned above
ohh and btw, sometimes when the cwm installation fails then the bootloader gets stuck and the screen becomes kind of blurry and i have to take out the battery...... is that normal?
And i'll first try the no wipe files (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586807&highlight=odin) and see if that works

And i was on codenamed 4.0.3 so if i use the "no-wipe" files for 4.0.4 it should not cause anymore problems right?
I'll first use ODIN with no wipe files and if that doesnt work then i guess i'll say bye bye to my data and do a full wipe.
Thanks for you help mate and i will reply with the result in an hour or so (dinner time now )
Thanks again
EDIT:
so i ran ODIN but now its stuck. the start button has been greyed out with the following message

<ID:0/011> Odin v.3 engine (ID:11)..
<ID:0/011> File analysis..
<ID:0/011> SetupConnection..

and the phone is on the ODIN download mode screen :/
EDIT 2:
when i use the full image, then the ODIN downloading screen on my nexus becomes blurry when ODIN on pc shows "<ID:0/011> NAND Write Start!! "

It may not be bricked. Not being able to get into the bootloader can happen when you flash via odin.
Can you not boot into download mode (hold volume down and then press and hold power)? If you can, then you can still flash via odin.
I haven't really used odin too much, so I won't be able to help you troubleshoot too much (maybe ask in Chainfire's thread), but: if you can boot into download mode, do it, and re-follow the instructions in this post to-the-letter. Use the full odin image, not the no-wipe one.

Take a slow deep breath and exhale. Take out the battery. Wait for a while. Put the battery back in.
Hold down the volume down button (not the volume up) and then press and hold power for 15 secs. See if that gets you into download mode. Even if nothing shows up on the screen, try following the steps in the odin thread.
You did make sure only the checkmarks that needed to be there were there in odin, correct?

Really hope somebody can help.
I have had a galaxy note 2 for about 6 months on Vodafone UK N7100.
Today while i was at work i felt something hot in my pocket, my phone was very hot (i was not doing anything with it) The phone was stuck on the Samsung boot screen.
After a few minutes of looking at this i realised it was stuck and removed the battery. SInce then i have been unable to get past the boot screen, i can't get into download mode or reboot mode. The only things to note. When i turn my phone on a red light flashes. When i plug my charger in the charge icon appears on screen but it does not charge.
Really hoping somebody can help.
I had rooted my phone if that helps (it did not cause this problem and has been functioning rooted for months)
Update
Just managed to get to a screen which warned me about installing custom software and did i want to continue. I said yes and it is now downloading something
How did you get to that screen?

if u can get to download mode now then flashed philz recovery first. After flashing recovery wipe dalvik, cache partition & then data reset.then u can flash stock using odin. try this if the first one doesnt work

this would be your last hope http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32273406&postcount=5 follow the guide properly marked in red and remember to tick re partition in odin, if this doesnt work then your phone has been affected by sds due to 4.1.1 rom so u need to take it to service for motherboard replacement which is borne by samsung so no worries, and remember never to use a 4.1.1 rom in note 2 get the 4.1.2 rom or rather they will install that only this time and in future just go through dr.ketan thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 here it will guide you perfect instead following some untidy guides

Thanks for the advice i am downloading the file now.
I did not manage to install the rom i suggested i was using so i don't think that could have been the issue. well your reply is quite confusing
1.did you manage to flash the rom with pit in odin. was it successful or you get any errors
2.does your phone start now
3.if not then your phone has died and it needs to be taken to service guys ,but just check what the status of your phone in download mode is it official or custom . if its official then no worries just go ahead and take it to service guys and tell them abt your issue that the phone stopped working while in pocket dont info them that you rooted it ever just make them blv that it was a sds caused by 4.1.1 rom so they replace it free.
i mean your motherboard
Sorry if i am confusing matters.
I did not manage to flash anything it was just coming up with failed no PIT partition.
Current binary samsung official
My system status is custom
Are these ok to return my phone with?
I decided to take the advice offered and download the recovery but got confused.
Do i need all of the files from that link or just 1?
I downloaded the first one N7100XXDMB2_Factory
It contained
boot
cache
hidden
modem.bin
recovery
sboot.bin
system
tz
None of these are the md5 format
i am now thinking i should have downloaded XXDLJ2_OXA_Factory
Is that correct or was i right with the first file. If i was right downloading the first file then where do i get the md5 files required for odin to do my factory restore.
Know these are very noobish questions just doint want to do anything wrong
In answers to your questions....
1) Did i manage to flash the rom with it in odin
No
I got confused which files i should be using and did not want to do anything without being sure
2) My phone does not start
3) When i am in download mode my phone shows

If your phone doesn't have a partition map, then no, you can't.
You can try, as a last resort, using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43760271&postcount=22
I had a similar problem not too long ago (although it started with all apps crashing and then stuck at bootscreen) and managed to fix my phone.

EFS is a part of the system that stores your serial number, IMEI and everything related to your phone specifically. You are generally able to back it up using a custom recovery or using software on your PC while the phone is rooted and booted on the android OS. Since you cannot boot into recovery and also can't boot into android itself, I don't think you would be able to back it up.
If you ever installed a custom rom with AROMA, there is a chance you have it backed up already. But if you don't explicitly remember...

Hello all,
Quick background - my wife's T-Mobile S4 went kaput on our honeymoon last night, but I was at least able to save some of her data. The problem now goes to installing a new ROM on her device.
I have wiped EVERYTHING and formatted the data, but when I install ANY ROM (I've tried multiple), I always get the E: Unable to mount '/data" error. Normally, I would just ODIN the stock tar, then install a custom recovery again and then the ROM, but I only have my work computer for the rest of my honeymoon and I don't have administrative access to run ODIN (you might not think it requires it, but if you're only a standard user then you cannot bypass UAC to run it).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this to mount? The phone will not boot past the "Samsung Galaxy S4" screen. I've tried going into TWRP and mounting Data but it will not work.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Please keep in mind that I don't have access to ODIN!

Sounds like a twrp issue. Try grabbing the cwm flash able zip and adb push to the sd card and then use twrp to install it. I've read so many issues about twrp. I recommend staying away from it. Philz touch recovery is really awesome too.

Hello! I actually downloaded Philz touch recovery in both .zip and in .md5, so that is what I intend to go with. The issue is how I push it using adb, as I believe I need to install something in order to do so, but I don't have any administrative privileges! This is what's preventing me from running ODIN in the first place!
Can you confirm that I can push using adb without installing anything?
Thank you! - Taxmaster
I had this issue. Odin flashing and then booting into "STOCK RECOVERY" after flashing and then a factory reset in the stock recovery followed by a fresh re-flash from Odin worked to get my phone back up and running again.
I don't know how you are going to be able to fix it by just flashing a recovery. I tried for hours and could not get it to boot from just recovery alone.

What you noted would be my plan if I had admin rights to my computer, but since I cannot get ODIN, I'm screwed at the moment. I'm hoping someone can assist with the "adb" proposal, however I'm not sure one can download/run adb without installation or prompt from UAC

Using ADB does not require admin privelages, however, if your computer does not have the necessary drivers to detect the device in recovery, then you will have to install the drivers, which then yes UAC is required. HOWEVER, if you have another phone or device that supports MicroSD cards, you can just pop in the MicroSD into a working device and transfer the zip that way, then transfer back the sd card and flash

I did exactly what's noted above --> took out the SDcard, put it in another phone, transferred over the .zip, put it back in her phone, went to TWRP, wiped everything on the device, installed the .zip, and rebooted into recovery from TWRP, and then the new recovery booted! I did another wipe/factory reset and then installed a ROM, but when I hit reboot, it didn't reboot past the Samsung Galaxy S4 splash screen , and to make matters worse, when I go to enter recovery pressing home+up+power, it says "Recovery Booting ...." in the top left corner but it won't boot into recovery!!!
Thoughts?
If someone could strip administrative privileges off of a version of ODIN v3 for me, that would be great! I don't see how else to get around this now!

Out of curiosity, are you flashing a ROM for the T-Mobile S4? If no, are you using a T-Mobile kernel? I only ask because a kernel for a different device will normally cause you to not be able to pass the initial Galaxy S4 screen... Also, as far as TWRP goes, sometimes it doesn't go right into recovery. If it fails to enter recovery after a reasonable amount of time, just hold power to turn it off and try again. I've had to do it 2-3 times at least just to successfully enter TWRP.

I am installing a T-Mobile S4 ROM that uses a custom kernel. The ROM before was the same ROM just a lower revision, same kernel.
With respect to TWRP, I thought it was all gone now that I installed the CWM touch version. I've tried doing it a million times and cannot get back into either TWRP or CWM. At this point, the only thing I can do is turn on the device to see the "Samsung Galaxy S4" screen, attempt booting into recovery but never make it past the screen saying "Recovery Booting", or enter Download Mode but I cannot use it since I can't run ODIN on my work laptop .... stupid admin privileges!

Not sure what happened there.. very strange. But seems as if you have no recovery xD lol Maybe heimdall will work. Never used it not sure if it needs UAC to work. But dont use TWRP anymore
As far as your situation goes, maybe if you have the time and fast enough internet, see if you can download a linux distro (i recommend fedora as it is small and light) then make a bootable USB from that distro (if you have a flash drive) then use Heimdall in linux to flash the tar image.
Or just wait to get home. not sure how long your honeymoon is xD

I think I just need to accept that fact that I have been had and that the only thing I can do is wait until I'm home to use ODIN. Absolutely asinine in my opinion, however it seems the only logical conclusion at this point.
If anyone else cares to chime in with suggestions, please let me know!

I have had the same problem several times. The only way I have been able to boot up is to completely format data and either restore from backup or reflash a new ROM. If I wipe the dalvik cache after doing so however, it will not boot (hangs at the galaxy s4 screen like you said) and I will have to reflash or restore a 2nd time. (I'm using twrp too, but will switch to cwm if this happens again)
I m curious. Have you run into this problem again? Seems like every time my phone shuts off and tries to boot I have to restore from a backup that is days or weeks old. Super annoying. The first time this happened I restored to stock from Odin and did not use any backups in the hope that it would solve my problem and prevent it from happening again. No such luck.

I ended up having to wait until I got home to use ODIN. I ODIN'd up the stock .tar and then installed Philz touch recovery (CWM-based), then I did a full wipe of everything and installed a ROM. Problem solved.
With that noted, I abandoned TWRP and am now only using CWM on my wife's phone.

Same, TWRP just has too many problems.
CWM is much more reliable.

If you were using TWRP 2.6.0, that could have been the problem. I reverted back to 2.5.0.2 and like many others, have had no issues. If you had a TWRP backup, that might have fixed it early on.
lol, I just got a sprint s3, And I'm really not used to Samsung devices, I Had root access n clockworkmod using odin b4.. but I upgraded to 4.3... And Both Root access n CWM was gone. So I was trying to start over by flashing clockwork mod (Touch version) with odin. but now.... it pops up "Firmware Encounter an issue... :/

If you pull the battery on your phone and power on, what can you do? Can your PC recognize your phone? Can you boot into download mode? Can you boot into stock recovery? Can you actually boot into the ROM? If any one of these are true you're not bricked and you have options based on what you can get into. Search for how to restore, how to use CF-auto root, or whatever applies based on where you can get into the phone...

Sorry, my friend. Google search USB Jig ($4 possible fix) and/or Mobile Tech Videos JTAG ($50 guaranteed fix)....
Hi good people! thanks in advance, I had a problem for about a month now where my phone (Note2) used to take about 15 min to boot, after trying many solutions, I read somewhere to delete ODEX files and after trying that in many ways I went to system/apps and deleted ODEX files there with Root Explorer which turned out to be a biiig mistake, it just stucks at the Samsung Logo for a few seconds before it starts again (only the logo, the phone doesn't reboot) and it stays like that forever. I'm in hell right now, I have some files I don't want to lose so I was afraid of factory reseting but after I was told that it won't delete them, I did but that didn't solve anything, I can't access download mode, I can access recovery mode however (not custom) I tried flashing a custom ROM but I just get "E: failed to verify whole-file signature" please help ! I'll be really thankful ! thank you !
EDIT: I hope this helps someone else, after trying everything, what eventually worked for me was the USB Jig, I was able to enter download mode and install a new ROM from there. good luck!

If you know your rom load, flash it back on to your device without any wiping. It should load the needed files back on your system. Though any system mods will be lost.
The other option is to go into aroma from your custom recovery and grab your needed files over to your extsd card

Thanks for the reply, the problem is that I don't have a custom recovery and when I try to flash a new ROM it tells me "E: failed to verify whole-file signature" ...
Well the only option is download mode and try loading the same factory rom you have on your device. Or a newer version, if available. Some different regions have updates.
Can't use stock recovery to flash a custom rom.
You have access to a USB jig? What happens when you try to enter download mode?

thank you, sorry I'm replying late I just saw your reply. no I don't have access to it unfortunately, and when I try to enter download mode the phone just boots normally to the Samsung logo (where I get the usual problem)
thank you !
Remove the battery for a few seconds, replace the battery and quickly hold down the home and volume down button.

any help guys ?? please! I've looked everywhere still can't find a solution
Without being able to enter download mode means you can't flash a stock rom via Odin. Maybe order a jig from eBay or try yo make your own. Either way, a jig us a good tool to have when flashing Samsung phones.

Is there any other way to fix this problem without a USB jig. ADB or something
Not sure that adb will allow you to side load a rom.

oh okay, Is installing a new ROM the only solution there is ? if it is, is the USB jig the only way to flash it? thank you !
Installation of a custom ROM but that requires a custom recovery. The easiest method would be to flash TWRP with Odin or possibly TWRP via flashify. Problem is that the phone can't enter download mode or boot the ROM.
I recommend buying or making a USB jig. If you don't want to wait, you could take the phone to a repair shop and have it flashed via jtag.

I'm gonna try to make a USB jig if that doesn't work I'll take it to a repair shop even. Can I flash a stock ROM from TWRP ? or only cutom ones ?
Thank you so much
Only custom can be installed via twrp.
