Gallery Doesn't seem to work correctly. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted my phone using visionary/gfree last night, used a rom for awhile n went back to my used to be (without the rom) and my gallery is all weird. The pictures are mixed in folders I didn't put them in and when I try messaging a picture to someone they are in the correct folders. And some won't even show when I go to gallery but will when I try messaging.

Anyone?

This may sound a bit like overkill, but use AstroZip or some other file manager to move most -- if not all --of your pics into .zip files. Open the gallery and it should be empty. Then extract the .zips one folder at a time. I think you'll find that things go screwy after extracting a certaim set of files. This was one of the odd things I was dealing with when I found that mediaserver was killing my battery.

Replacing stock messaging app

Some where in Themes and Apps i saw a zip file that replaced the evo's sto k messaging app. At the time i was not intrested in it because all it looked to do is theme it black.
I am wondering if it is possible to replace the stock messaging app on evo with handcent. I am using root explorer but can't find the stock app in system/app. All thats there is messageuploader.apk and deleting this just takes the possibility to recieve new text away.

I heard it was done with the G1 and MyTouch, not sure if it will work with sense phones. You could try swapping apk's in a ROM and flashing, thats what I would do.

I was going to attempt this only there is no messaging.apk located in system/app
It was mms.apk for the stock Evo messaging app. I am gonna try flashing and post results in a bit.
This was about the easiest mod ever.
1 Just install handcent or your choice.
2 I used Root Explorer and deleted mms.apk.
No problems sending or recieving messages yet

Outstanding! So I just move handcent to the system/app folder and delete mms.apk? Root explorer is the best app ever. Im going to try this too, I never was too fond of the stock sms, but I dont like having multiple apps doing the same thing also, weird things happen.
Yes it worked for me, it takes away the stock messaging widget as well. There is a file in system/app named MessageUploader.apk make sure to leave there or you will not be able to recieve text (i thought i was getting ignored).
Do a regular download and install of handcent
Force stop messaging app settings/applications
Use Root Explorer move mms.apk to sd card, getting it out of system folder & allowing you a back up
Reboot to recovery clear cashe
CHEERS TO HANDCENT BEING YOUR NEW ONLY MESSAGING APPLICATION

Is there a way to customize the stock messaging app?

Nothing more to add besides the title. I have a black, gray, aqua theme going and I'm tired of chompsms screwing things up and handscent sucking period. The stock messaging app is white and I can't figure out how to change it. Any ideas?

See if you can push the Mms.apk from CyanogenMod. You can make it have a black background with white text and many other things.
This is going to sound like a newbie question, but how would I do that? I've pushed apks before via file manager, but never one that was from a rom.

I haven't tried it, but...
go to settings/applications and check "unknown sources" to allow software from outside the market.
get a rom that has the apk you want, rename the rom to .zip, unzip it, and pull the apk from system/app. Put it on your sdcard and install via file manager.

I got all the way up to the install park. Apparently it's the same apk as the regular messaging app (except the ability to customize it, of course) so when I got to the installation screen it asked me if I wanted to browse the apk or "uninstall". I tried uninstall so I could install the modded one, to no success (it is a baked in app).
I guess I'll have to wait til I decide to root (which really means, when a stable CM rom comes out).
Try Handcent. Its in the market..free and pretty cool.

Chomp is more stable, less laggy and consumes less battery life. My only issue with it is that whenever someone sends me a picture, it keeps bringing up the same picture someone sent me over a month ago. It sucks, but oh well. Until root, I'm sticking with it.

that is a dealbreaker for you and I switched to handcent. I would switch to stock if it could do the iphone/bubble format

It might work if it had a higher version number or a different java name... sounds like a little project for the EZ Bake oven.
or you could root your phone.
Sent from my CyanogenMod Vision
Wait, did you say your phone wasnt't rooted? If not then there is nothing you can do because its a /system app, and to modify /system files you need root.
If you do have root, you can save the cm apk to your desktop and use
"adb remount
Adb push C:/Users/(name) /Desktop/Mms. apk /system/app/Mms. apk"
From a command prompt. Otherwise you can use a root file explorer to copy the app into the /system/app directory.

[MOD][EDIT][SOLVED][APK]Modified stock Gallery apk without picasa sync.

Edit: APK Added below.
Hi. Im wondering if there is a modified gallery apk floating around. I really hate picasa, with a passion. Even if it isnt the 3D gallery, I dont care. When I remove the gallery and use a third party viewer app, we cant set lock screen wallpapers. Thanks!
SOLVED
Under Accounts and Sync|Google, uncheck the Sync Picasa Web Albums box and they wont show up in the Gallery.
My fav picture viewing app that I bring with me to every rom I run is QuickPic. Its super small and fast and does everything I want it to, including setting homescreen and lockscreen pics.
Check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hbGVuc3cuUGljRm9sZGVyIl0.
If you're referring to the fact that your email auto checks for new mail every 30 min. you can go into your email settings and set the frequency of checking email to "Never".

Remove the stock gallery and you can not set lock screen wallpapers, even with quikpic. Which Ive used on all of my devices. Looking to remove the picasa sync option altogether which you cant do unless you remove the 3d gallery, but then you cant set lock screen wallpapers. Hence the search for a modified stock gallery.
SOLVED
I've never seen my email app use any inordinate amount of battery life as a result of it running in the background nor have I ever read a post of how someones stock email client is draining batt life. Is that whats happening to you?
And to avoid the issue of setting wallpapers with other apps, just don't remove the stock gallery app and the 3rd party apps you use should set wallpapers just fine. If you don't like the stock app, don't use it. But to remove it altogether sounds like its leading to problems.
Not sure what you mean by remove Picasa sync option altogether. Just uncheck the box and its done, no more syncing, or are you referring to removing the menu enrty/option altogether under Accounts and Sync|Google.
If so I guess I'll go now. It sounds like you want dev help from someone willing to work on code for you. Thats waaay outta my league.

I modified the stock Gallery apk so that I wouldnt have the "Sync Picasa" option under the accounts in "Accounts & Sync".
I really do not like having that option in there, so I solved my problem.
I have attached the Gallery apk to share if anyone else is as picky as I am.
I simply moved it to /system/app, overwriting or deleting the original, then fixed the permissions. I kept the original odex file. Rebooted and all is well.
Extract the zip/rar file and use the apk inside.
I hope some of you find this useful.

You got me. I'm not a dev just a tinkerer. Be certain that it's named correctly, no spaces, perhaps at the beginning of the file name etc.. When you copy it to /system/app it should ask you if you want to overwrite the existing file. That'll tell you it's named correctly. Unless there is something else that you're missing, it should work, as it worked for me. I wish I could do it for you, man. I simply copied the apk from my sd external and pasted it into /system/app, fixed the permissions and rebooted. After the reboot, I confirmed the gallery worked then I cleared cache and dalvik just for the heck of it. Really sorry it's not working for you as easily as it did for me.

Lemme get some tea and bacon and then I'll upload the originals for you. You should try copying the original apk and odex to /system/app to get your gallery back. After that try copying the modified again. Apk only.

Every phot taken creates new hidden folder

So this is driving me insane.
Since I switched from an s2 to an s3 I've had this problem:
Every single photo I take creates its own hidden folder. I have my camera set to store to the sd not the phone bc that's what I prefer. I understand the phone creating albums for apps that take pics like instagram and such, but this is nuts.
Every single freaking picture has a hidden folder. Not just the photo is hidden, it's a folder too. Sometimes igs a thumbnail and sometimes it's the full image. I have one hidden folder I've created on purpose but to find it is impossible since all 500 of my photos have their own frigging album.
I'm using the stock camera app and this happened stock and unrooted as well as on the wicked rom and a sonic rom.
I also have drop box backing up my photos.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Gallery app for note 2

Hey,
So i'm looking for a solution to my issue invokving the stock gallery app with the note 2. When adding music to my note 2 all the album art shows up in the gallery and I want those photos gone since they each make separate folders to look at. So after some searching the only solution I've found was using another app such as quick pics.
This allows me to hide the folders I don't want to see, which works fine. The problem is that this app won't allow for making a photo note on the front of back of the pic.
Does anyone have an idea of any fixes or know of an app that will support both these features?
Hide certain folders and photo note.
Thanks,
AC

In folders you don't want accessed by the gallery, create a file called .nomedia
Yes the first character is a period. This tells gallery to ignore this folder when looking for images.
Off the top of my head I don't know if it also prevents the gallery for diving in to subfolders.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

Okay thanks! , so I did this and it worked. But now none of my music will show up in Google play though? Is there anyway to fix this? Also I can't find the .nomedia file in the folder that I put it in (my music folder). So I have no way to delete it? Ideas?
Also fyi it did hide all sub folders

New update. I figured out how to find the .nomedia file and deleted it, however deleting it did not bring my music back... Thoughts?

Update again, I figured out how to get back to where I started, but now I still have my original problem, unless anyone can show me a way to get music to show in Google music even with the .nomedia file
