I've tried Google without any luck..so I'm guessing this is a no..but I'm trying to find an app that disables tilt in certain situations only. I know I can disable tilt thru the settings..but that disables tilt EVERYWHERE. I'm just looking to disable tilt on my homescreen..while still being able to tilt while browsing Interwebz and whatnot. Seems like it should be an easy enough function..considering BB's have an app for it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok 1 - Android is not BlackBerry. Not even on the same level as one another, so just get that out of your head.
Second off, wtf do you mean on your homescreen? Sense doesn't turn landscape unless you changed the Skin to one built with landscape. Just switch it to the stock HTC skin, problem solved, it never goes landscape unless you open the keyboard.
If you're not using Sense (CM 6.1 or something) check the settings, as it usually has a way to disable homescreen rotation in their own personal settings.
Try CM6. It has the option for a custom power control widget to be embedded into the statusbar. You can put a toggle for rotation too. You loose the sense home and widgets though, but imo stock > sense. Or you could try quickdesk and put a rotation toggle widget on it.

Orly? Android isn't Blackberry? Good to know.
So lets begin...in order to "hide" all the bunk apps because I wasn't rooted, flashed, s-offed etc yet (all the things necessary to remove said apps) I had to download Launcher Pro (which was highly recommended). As soon as this was done..then yes..I was no longer able to use stock Sense. So now..my homescreen always tilts on me..which bugs the **** outta me. Could I just go back to stock Sense? Sure I could..but I'd rather have what should be a basic app to allow me to pick and choose where and when I'd like my screen to tilt. And I've grown to like how my homescreen looks over the stock look. Yes..I can disable autotilt in the settings..but then I can't even tilt the screen into landscape for the browser. So maybe I'm missing something here that someone else can point out..

I am on a stock ROM myself still, but I know that Cyanogen has a lot of customisation options. I wonder if it's worth asking in the CM thread over on the G2 side (because the DZ one is dead) out whether that has options that might help you ?
You want to disable "rotation" all over your phone AND to be able to use the browser in Landscape mode.
If that is the only thing you want, you can set your browser to "landscape mode only"
Now if you have a longer list of requirements on what apps get permisions to rotate the screen etc, I think you may bigger problems

there was nothing offensive or said with an attitude in this post. it was only til you noobs came on here with misplaced android pride. he didnt compare berrys to droids. he simply said they have an app for it.
this is a great question. the tilt function seems almost too sensitive. it would be great to maybe tweak it somehow to make it so you really have to hold the phone sideways....instead of slightly tilt the phone. an app to block it in certain situations is good but i feel that id have to micro manage too much to specify every single situaiton id want tilt or not.
for the record... i'm am a die hard android user and his post did not push my buttons at all. this post is very useful.
ADW launcher has an option in system preferences for home screen orientation.
Just change it from auto to portrait, that's what I did.

Wow no one answered your question. Well here it is, when you are on the home screen hit the Menu - Behavior Settings and uncheck Enable Auto-Rotation.
That will disable auto rotation on the home screen. Now go into Settings - Display and make sure Auto-rotate screen is checked. This way you will be able to but your screen into landscape mode when surfing the web or using apps that auto rotate. Now if you want to be able to choose specific apps, that I have no knowledge of doing. Hope this helps.

Tasker (on the Market) can be set up to enable/disable auto-rotation on many different triggers, like when a certain app is launched. Plus it can do a lot more that that! Check it out I think it's well worth the money.

Excellent.
Glad I could help. I know I was having the same issue at one point in time and it was very annoying. I didn't want to give up on Launcher Pro because the widgets are awesome and it gave me "sense" on my stock android! If you haven't played with Launcher Pro Plus, you should give it a whirl. The widgets that are unlocked with it are definitely top notch.

This is the correct answer if using Launcher Pro, I'd assume it would be pretty similar for adw launcher too.

Not only those but what about the Friendstream widget? It is damn near an exact replica of the sense widget. I also like how when you use the picture frame widget, you can resize it. That feature is only available on LPP not LP.

Definitely Launcher Pro for me, smooth, customisable, practical,... who could ask for more?

Hi, I recently broke my HD2, and just got SGS2. On the HD2 I had Kumar's ROM. I'm new to Android, and I'm finding the Window Shade quite annoying. On the HD2, when I got a new message, voicemail, etc., I would tap on the notification bar which opened the notification window. On Android this requires swiping the bar, which is not easy using just one hand, and is simply more input than necessary. Is there any way around this?
Thanks!
I grab the notification bar with my thumb and flick down. One handed.

ROM wouldn't matter much. Did you go in the ADW settings and look for screen gestures? Change the swipe down to show notifications. That way when you just swipe down on the home screen, that whole thing will shoot down.

Thanks for the help, Biz. Yes, I tried several settings. The one you are referring to DOES work in that manner, which is a little better, but I'm just hoping to find a way to not have to swipe at all. I realize it's a small thing, but it's something that will aggravate me to no end, and as far as I can tell applies to all Android phones. I thought these things were supposed to be more configurable than this. I am amazed that there may be no way around performing dozens of extra motions every day to accomplish something so simple.
May sound crazy, but I'm missing my perfectly configured (but lesser hardware equipped and no longer available) Windows Mobile 6.5 HD2.

OK. On the homescreen using adw ex, you can hold down and add a launcher action anywhere on the screen you want. You can add a show notifications action wherever you like and edit it and use a blank png for its icon. Then when you click that part of the screen, the notifications bar will drop.
It's similar to what you want, you just don't necessarily click the notifications bar.
I hope this helps you more and you start to enjoy android. As I had a hd2 before the sensation and love this way more than both of them combined.

Thank you, sir. I have been messing with that ADW EX launcher setting, and it's a step in the right direction. Still not at all what I'm looking for, but better than the stock setup. Any idea if there is some way to get the window shade to simply open and close, rather than the animated and slow way it moves now? That's another annoyance; I just want the thing to work quickly without any superfluous animations and such. It opened and closed instantly on my HD2.
Really appreciate all your help!
Don't know of a way to do that man. Sorry. :-(

Why not just set your home button to go home and open notifications? It's in adw settings as well.

Thanks, GideonX. That's another OK option, but still an irritating kludge. I realize it's just a swipe or a couple presses of the Home button or aiming my finger at an icon, but I'm used to a single tap on the bar & no swipe, and find any extra required motions wasteful. Also, unnecessary transition effects are a pet peeve, they serve only to slow things down, IMO. I'm really astounded that the Android bar is that unconfigurable, even with 3rd party apps.
Sorry for venting my frustrations on you guys! I really do appreciate your input.

First of all, please don't kill me for posting questions that have already been answered as I've already tried looking for them but with such a big thread like that of the Paradox ROM, it's just impossible.
1. On the dock, I know it is possible to change the icons for applications. However, whenever I go into Preferences, I don't know which command to put nor how to switch the positions. Also, it is set to show 5 icons but only shows 4. Oh, and whenever I set it to 3, the remainder one doesn't show up on the application drawer.
2. It seems I'm not getting the best out of battery life. Is there something else I need to do or a mod that there is to install?
3. I think that's it for now. .-.
I would post this under the ROM thread but I can't because I'm new and stuff.
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out. c:

I use a different Launcher, but... TW 4.5 (which is what is installed) isn't necessarily finished - so yes, you have to manually remove the apps from the dock before you set the dock count to 3.
do you want to show 5 or 3 icons lol. you are asking about both.
5 icons: you have to add the 5th. when you first do, you can't move the application drawer icon, but it will jump to the middle, so just place your other apps accordingly: the one in the 4th position will end in the 5th, the one in the middle will end up in the 4th.
Battery Life - you running LOVE? or are you running mark 2 (can't remember the name of it) I get great life out of LOVE,..
btw - i run the sony ericson launcher (fixed one) and it's awesome lol. seems really snappy, and I just really like the little details (when you throw something on a homescreen away, the garbage can lid actually bounces, and it vibrates along with the bounce) that have been added. They just give a truly finished feel to the launcher.
Hm, lets go with 5.
How can I add the other one? Also, do I just get the launcher from the Market or do I have to flash anything?
I'm running LOVE. I just don't know what to do to it lol
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
hokay - make sure to select 5 icons in the preferences, go to the app drawer, click the menu softkey, click edit... drag an app to the dock. click save... I wouldn't doubt it if you're forgetting to do that.
It took me a while to find the sony launcher, and I dl'd it at work, so I can get back to you with a Dropbox link tomorrow. sorry, but I'm not burning my phone's data when i only have half a gig a month. It's something you just put onto your phones external (or internal) sd card, and install. super easy. but it's stuck at 5 screens - not modifyable in that sense.
Oh wow, thats easy lol
No problem. Do you also know where I could get the CM7 (or whatever) Launcher?
Btw, thanks a lot for helping!

I just switch home out and replace with ADW. you just drop icons from desktop to the spot where you want or long press and drag off what you don't.

First off I was looking at rooms and noticed there are no Android 4.0 roms??? That are stable?
Aosp roms? Or tw 4.0?
We have both roms. And both do have bugs
Before you ask search
Like he said we do have 4.0.3. Check the development thread to see what's out there. The closest to stable is raverx black edition which is touch wiz based but you can always use apex launcher if you want an asop experience. Raver also has asop almost completed but alas the ics roms we do have out are a bit buggy but some can be daily drivers. Either way, nandroid backup and try em out till you find what's good for you cheers!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
i'm running ics megamix with apex launcher and it's been pretty stable.
raver's black edition had a lot fcs for me and really wasn't good enough for dd.
and racing's was good, but i only ran the original (with the reboot/shutdown bug).
but as far as i can tell, they really are all about the same, just with different levels of debloating (which raver's has the least bloat, but i think that led to some of the instability i encountered) and some different bootanimations/theme tweaks.
the main bugs are autorotate is broken and some people have call echo, but i haven't experienced call echo on any that i've ran.
There is a stock rom ported from at & ts sgs2 ics update. That's as close as you get to official for us. There's only one bug the rotation is whack and it's full of atts bloat other then that it's good.

the most common i've seen is called bln, stands for backlight notification (i'm pretty sure there are others, too, but i'm not familiar with them). you need a compatible kernel, though, and so i don't think any of the ics can support it yet.

The kernel in the ROM must support BLN for it to work. There is another app on the market that will work on any ROM. It is called NoLED. It does not use the capacitive buttons but will show a light or if configured an icon on your screen even when screen is off for any apps you choose for it to manage. it will use separate icons for phone, sms, etc... so you know what you missed instead of just the lights like with BLN.
I think touchwiz has come a long way. It really adds alot to stock android in my opinion, and im not just talking about the s pen additions.
The dialer, the whole phone app in general, all the motion settings...
What I want to talk about are issues that people have with touchwiz in general, meaning, reasons that you would jump ship to a custom rom, and I'd like to see if anyone would have solutions to these issues.
Ill give you a few examples of my own experiences.
1) I need to have a battery percentage in the status bar. So when youre running any rom worth its salt, there's an option for that. I was going through the settings on the note 2 and there it was, built into the touchwiz settings... im curious to know when this was added because im pretty sure it wasnt there in gingerbread.
2) I like the additions to the stock player but to me, its still not functional enough, I at least need a screen lock. When I mentioned this in a post, someone pointed out that screen lock is built in now, all you need to do is press the power key when playing a video and it locks the screen.
3) I remember someone posting about how on this phone, the calls and messages show up in the call log and how annoying that is. I just looked for a second and realized that theres a way to change that. When youre in the call log, you hit menu then view by.
I think we could all benefit from learning about the other "hidden features and functionality" in touchwiz. For example, I still have an issue with the stock video player that you cant easily fast forward by dragging like other players and there doesnt seem to be any options or preferences built it...
What I want from Touchwiz is wallpaper scrolling and the option to change the screen grid. Other than that, it has really improved a lot and I'm pretty much comfortable using it now.
most touchwiz doesn't work for me because I work in a 240dpi environment and touchwiz doesn't scale well in it. not even the Samsung keyboard loads, it just FCs. I use different launcher, different dialer. stock kernel is not too battery friendly...I got almost 2 days usage with jedi master 2 rom with normal usage (yes, it's touchwiz based but wherever I can change it I do).
why would I jump ship?
- better environment scaling in 240dpi
- better/longer battery life
- faster operations

+1 on Jedi... I consider myself an "advanced" user and stock touchwiz is not quite there yet but if you add Jedi's rom and Nova launcher then it makes the experience much better imo... I don't mess around with dpi settings as I will just wait for a rom that will customize that to my liking. We are lacking in the development department right now but as soon as it picks up there should be lots of great options for us...:fingers-crossed: And as far as scrollable wallpapers... I just download Zedge & an app called wallpaper changer and I have on demand scrollable wallpapers in Nova!

i guess i wasnt clear, i found it, but i never knew it was there... and the homescreen layout... use a different launcher..
The only thing I missed from a custom launcher are:
1) can't change the icon grid, would like a 5x5 at least.
2) can't lock the home screen. Hate it when I accidentally moved stuff after having it setup perfectly the way I want it.
Also it would be great if we can select which app the page buddy brings up.
The only thing that really pushed me away from TouchWiz is that you can’t move the “Apps” button in the dock. I can’t reach the button when holding the phone in my left hand, one handed.
I really hate the lock screen. I was running a ROM with AOSP JB lock screen on my previous phone. I use the lock screen music controls all the time.
On Touchwiz lock screen if you use the basic swipe lock, you get the quick apps at the bottom, but the music controls don't show up at the top (at least not for Spotify or DoggCatcher). I can turn on pattern unlock, then it will show the lock screen music controls, but I lose the quick apps (I find it useful to access Google Search or Camera from lock screen).
The only solution to get both is to use pattern unlock with swipe gesture. This gives me the swipe lock screen with quick apps at the bottom, then when I swipe it gives me the pattern unlock with music controls at the top. WAY too many steps to access these two features that apparently can't be on the lock screen at the same time.
Can't say I often log in just to reply to a thread here, I'm more of a lurker. But I definitely feel the need to contribute to this.
I actually just returned my Note 2 (with the intention of getting an unlocked Nexus 4 in a couple days) and one of the major reasons was TouchWiz.
I hate it. Hate hate hate it. I hate the notification bar customizations. I hate that they've taken something as wonderful as power toggles in the notification bar and so badly butchered them. The entire notification pulldown is a crowded clusterfk compared to vanilla Android (full disclosure: I'm a long time vanilla Android user through Nexus devices/AOSP ROMs). The low DPI for a phone with such a big screen is damn absurd. I feel like I'm using my 37" computer monitor at 1280*1024. The TouchWiz customizations to the settings UI is just as bad or worse than Sense. If anything the Note 2 should be using the default Android tablet settings UI. The TouchWiz lock screen is a step up in customization from vanilla Android, but I still think it's ugly as all hell. Most of it is fluff that doesn't add any function or aesthetics. Not specifically TouchWiz related, but I loathe that they moved the back button from the left side of the screen as in vanilla JB to the left side via a capacitive hardware button.
I don't hate ALL of Samsung's tinkering. S-Voice was actually a phenomenal surprise and I'm going to dearly miss it. I could actually reliably send text messages with it without ever so much as glancing at the phone. Voice recognition was fantastic and it covered basic phone features better than vanilla Android's default abilities.
What I would really LOVE to have is a Note 2 without the hardware buttons, running AOSP with S-Voice and the S-Pen apps. Perhaps one day if there's a stable CM release where I can install extracted APKs for the Samsung apps I may get another one. Until then I'm going to stick with the Nexus line. TouchWiz really is that bad IMO.
... at least TouchWiz is a lot better than one of the first versions of it with the Behold II *shudders* I used one of those for a week.

I find it entertaining that you mentioned you are an avid vanilla android user, then explain how you run custom roms. *boggle* Enjoy the on screen buttons taking up real estate, 16gb of total memory, and yearning for the s-pen. Btw, something as simple as go launcher could allow you to set up plenty of things you want, to include a 5x5 icon set.
I could go on and on, but to be honest, I don't think it will be long for you to realize you are making a mistake. *cough* battery

He does have a point with a lot of that stuff, particularly the lock screen music control. I just don't understand why it's so hard to add it just under the weather, or as a small bar just above the other lockscreen targets at the bottom of the screen. That's the most frustrating thing for me, as most the the other stuff he mentioned can be changed, and if it can't I'm willing to overlook it for a while because of all the added features this phone brings.
I have been using power amp for music since my DroidX2 back when we yearned for an eq... so its always been there for me (the lock screen music control).
Everything mentioned can be addressed. That's the beauty of android; customizing your android experience. What people have become is lazy because roms do it for you.

How so? AOSP ROMS are pretty well vanilla with very minor tweaks. Nothing like horribly reskinned menus at every turn. *yahtzee*
I use ADW EX to do a hell of a lot more than add icons to my home screen. Changing the launcher can only do so much to fix a horrible complete OS reskin.

Only thing that looks skined on my phobe now isctge lockscreen, and im sure I can fix that with a lock screen app. Otherwise my launcher is now ADW, my notification bar is themed blue with circle battery and stock JB settings/clear all buttons. No brightness bar in notification window either. In all honesty there is not much mire I was able to change on my Galaxy Nexus that I cant on here, visually. In the options department Samsung has done a wonderful job and I currently dont miss anything from AOKP other then the widget popups on nav bar (would love to hold say menu button to get that on here)
