Help - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now I rooted my mobile using unrevoked method.
All working well.
Now I want to install custom Rom .
Now my mobile was S-on.
So,how to S-off to install custom Rom?
Or simply update a zip using custom recovery.

You don't need to S-off to install a custom rom. Zip and custom recovery will work.
If you want to S-off use AlphaRev, but make sure you know what you are doing and understand the risk.

What is the main use of S-off?

Search and you'll find out

I Read and found it.
But I can't understand fully.
If S-on means, we can not access the system fully.
Is correct?

Some what correct. If you don't know what it does, don't do it. Non-advanced users doesn't really benefit from s-off and it has the risk of damaging your device. And It's not required for just installing custom ROMs. Reboot to recovery and flash the *.zip from your SDcard, reboot and enjoy.
I would link you to the guide on how to root, but on my phone at the moment. It contains a lot of very good tips to new users on how to install custom stuff after obtaining root.

[Q] Root do rly i need it?

Do I even need to root my Desire Z?
I rebooted to recovery and i was able to choose the "Apply update.zip"
So i can put the cwm.zip on the sd card rename it to update.zip and then i can flash a custom rom without even rooting the device?
If you don't root I believe you will get a bootloop.

No, you can't do like that. It just won't work or even worse, you can brick your device. Read the FAQ, that should clear up some things for you.

Aha even if you do that. It won't let you flash it since it doesn't match the system. There's many ways to root your phone. Do the Wiki/Gfree method by the way

You can't flash unsigned/self-signed ZIPs...the G2/DZ is a NAND locked device.
yup its a definite brick if you try to switch roms, you'll get a boot loop and and theres absolutely no way to go back
Rooting is quite easy on the G2/DZ. However whatever you do, do not try to perm root with visionary! Visionary is only needed to get the soft root, then you can use gfree to complete your permanent root.

S-on w/ unlocked bootloader

What can I do besides gain root with this status? Down to the technical details if you will. Thanks!
I think I found the answer. Please verify. Apparently I can root and install custom ROMs that use the stock kernel. Right?
You can flash any ROM, kernel, or recovery. What you cannot flash are the radios, Hboots, or splash screens.
Hmmm. Ok.

And I can't find a rooting tutorial for the evo design. Is it safe to unlock the bootloader and then flash the su package once I get the custom recovery on?

This isn't the design forum, there isn't a forum for the design on xda, its a different device from the evo4g so we can't answer your questions other than a guess. I would say once you have recovery there should be no issue flashing SuperUser and the SU binaries for SuperUser

[Q] ROMs from a non HTC user

Hello guys. Never used a HTC device (Moto junkie). What must be achieved for root and loading a custom recovery on the One? Also, anything I should know before diving into CM11 nightlies?
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium
For root you must have S-OFF and and an unlocked bootloader. Go find the Rumrunner S-OFF tool which will also help you inject root. Then you can SuperCID your phone to use HTCDev bootloader unlock. Then you can easily flash in a custom recovery, kernel, ROM, etc.
I'm not sure what process the other guy followed but rumrunner will unlock bootloader and soff device. If it runs properly you will also have root. You will probably have to fastboot flash a custom recovery afterwards but that's about it. If you don't have root after using the tool just download supersu zip and flash in recovery.

For roms, I recommend either CM11 or the GPE port (both are 4.4). Both are great. Good luck with S-OFF!

S-off temproot query

I am fully stock. Now this viper addiction is not letting me live with stock rom. I need to S off, root, and flash the rom.
My query:
If i S-off via temproot method, do i need to root again in order to flash the rom or any mods?
If yes, how do i do that please?
Or just S off is enough to flash the rom?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You don't need to S-OFF to flash roms just have a twrp or philz recoveries and root and flash away....
Actually i don't wish to have my bootloader unlocked by htcdev... Want to keep it locked
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You cant flash a rom without unlocking your boot-loader. S-off is needed only if you want to make any changes to the hboot. So all you need to do to flash a rom is unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and then don't forget to take a nandroid backup before installing the new rom.
If i use http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/ method, do i need to unlock bootloader using htc dev?
Also using the temp root or weak sauce method, do i need to root it permenantly again? And then i need to flash a recovery as well?
I am a bit confused in the process...
Dont know which steps to follow and in which order.

As far as I understood, WeakSauce only works for the Verizon version, which is also the only one that really needs it, since you cannot unlock the bootloader.
Firewater should work even on temproot, but S-OFF won't magically root your phone. If you S-OFF with WeakSauce, then you can manually unlock the bootloader without going to HTCDev, there is a thread here around, very easy to find. After doing this, you can easily flash a custom recovery and perma-root the phone.
Tried looking for threads regarding s off....
I have International m8. I want to S-off, without using htc dev I want to unlock the bootloader and get perm root.
Anybody can help me on this please.

As far as I know, there is no known way of achieving this yet. The only temproot method I am aware of is WeakSauce, which should only work on the USA Verizon phone. However they write that trying it out on other variants of the phone should not do any harm. Go and try with it. I tried it on mine and it failed (application crashed), then I gave up and unlocked it with HTCDev.
If you manage to do this, please come back and tell us how you did, there may be other ways to temproot this phone, but they haven't made it to this forum yet.
WTH...
As i have done S off to M7/One X, i thought it would be easier to follow the steps... but , I am stuck with the drivers.
I uninstalled HTC Sync(firewater instructions)
But, I am not getting the drivers for HTC.
Also, ADB commands arent working for me anymore....ADB DEVICES say NO DEVICE FOUND....
I have Windows 7, and on the same laptop I have SOff my M7 few months back .....
ANY help with the links would be appreciated

Help with rooting etc

So I am about to sunshine the phone and get S-OFF, I've never owned an HTC before this and am used to samsung methods, IE odin. What do I need to do once I get s-off? I read here and there about downgrading firmware so I can actually install roms and such, but what do I do if I am on sense 6 with 4.4.2?
Use sunshine to s-off unlock then you can flash a custom recovery from the hboot (bootloader). Then flash a custom Rom or flash super su zip if you want stock Rom through custom recovery.

nope sunshine was updated to work with the latest OTA.
An incredibly easy way to do it is to just use the WinDroid tool somebody posted in the development section. It does everything with one click.

It will not unlock the Verizon HTC one bootloader. Verizon ordered HTC to not allow our cid be unlocked via htcdev. We have to use the s-off exploits to unlock also.
This means WinDroid will not do everything.
Although it will aid in installing custom recovery and flashing Rom.
