I have an HTC Desire HD on three in the UK and want to flash it to get rid of the crud they stick on there. I have rooted the phone and have busybox installed.
I want to know if Android Revolution HD 4G 3.2 or AR HD 2.0.9 will go on without any problems, and which radio to install if necessary?
I have downloaded radio 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.1 and 12.35d.60.140f.26.06.03.24.m2 in preparation.
I have radio s-off and eng hboot s-off ready to go.
Thanks for any feedback guys.
PS:- Really need to do this as I had a stock DHD originally, but shattered screen and liquid crystal got onto PCB and fried it and replacement is full of 3some crap including the stupid startup animation taking phone from 10 seconds to boot to now nearly 2 minutes.
:-(
I have got rid of the three crud from mine.
First install clockworkmod recovery then do a nandroid backup.
You can wipe most of it using broot explorer. System>apps and delete relevant apks. I suggest moving them, rebooting, checking all good and then deleting.
The ****ty start-up thing can be removed by flashing the splash screen. (mine now is my name and email address - done via PhotoShop). There are instructions on how to do this in the themes section.
The other startup anim is a zip file. I can't remember where it lives but I seem to think it is not in the standard place. I found it by doing a search on root explorer. By moving this to a directory on the SD card you can disable this.
Only thing left really is things like home pages on browsers.
All that being said. I am running Android revolution gingerbread beta with it's recommended radio and it works fine. Battery and sound seem better.
Although Three seem to be quite good these days, the branding of phones is obtrusive, chavvy and ****e.

Just getting permission denied errors when trying to delete the .apk files from root/system/app folder.
:-(
Will this problem go away when new Rom flashed in?
Also will doing s-off change the CID (carrier ID) ?
Thanks
If you used jkoljo's easy radio s-off tool, the cid should be changed now.
You said you have eng hboot, right? Boot into bootloader and go to system info. If yours is. 11111111 (don't remember how much 1's there are, lol) you have superCID

WooHoo!
I have sucessfully flashed AR 3.2 and newest recommended radio!
No more 3UK crud, its awesome quick and radio seems fine.
Will check wifi connectivity later but bluetooth seems a little quicker.
I will let my battery monitor calibrate for a couple of days and let you know whether battery life any better. If not will flash back original 26.03.02.26_M radio.
Just one more thing....
Changing boot animation on phone? Cant seem to find it anywhere on phone.
What format is the animation? width? height? fps? gif? mjpeg?
any suggestions, did a search of the forums but cant seems to find anything specific, so thought you might know as you had a phone that 3UK had previously wrecked
LOL
any help greatly appreciated
Hang on, Three UK are customizing the ROM's?!
Mine came as Stock ROM. :S
The first screen you see is called the splash screen. This can be flashed via fastboot. See the themes section
If you mean the tilt up the tree. Dodgy animation, like a student art project that is a zip file, sequential pngs if I remember. I think a search for .zip via root explorer would work.

Thanks for all the help. Fully flashed, new splashscreen, new boot and shutdown animations with sound!
Now just need to add a signature to my account on here...
Hmmm, now how do I do that...?

Update:
Smashed my screen, sent back to three for repair. All I can say about the repair guy is...
DUMBASS!
So everything was fine other than screen when it went to three (checked via pc usb cable and sync software) ... not any more.
Despite my splash screen listing all details of the OS and radio ROMs, they flashed back the stock ROM but not the radio and screwed the recovery.
Now I have no Bluetooth, no WiFi, power led permanently lit green, intermittent crashes, no SDcard access (therefore no camera, no video, no music player), only boots 1 time in 5 from powerdown, plugging in charger reboots phone every so often, battery lasts about 9hours on standby with all internet connectivity off.
All I can say is...
DUMBASSES!
Why couldn't they leave custom ROM well alone?
Phone goes back to them on Monday to sort out. I know from seeing what they have done that they won't be able to work out what they have done, so pretty sure that they'll send replacement.
I'm doing it this way to prove a point to them (and get an unscratched phone LOL)
Will report back when phone comes back from the puppets at 3

I could be wrong here but I'm sure if you put custom roms, ENG and S -OFF etc it invalidates ya warranty, so if they wanted to they could tell ya they won't fix it.
If they check they phone and quote you a repair cost or send you the handset back as is and 3's repairs are manufacturers plus a markup

I have just been given the desire by my wife as a late Christmas present and decided that I wanted to run a WWE rom on it as it was locked to O2. All went well and I flashed the generic ROM using a goldcard without too much of an issue. However I noticed that I was getting a really bad phone signal (1 bar instead of 3-4) in comparison to the stock O2 rom so I decided to use RUU to push the branded one back. This would not take so I extracted the ROM file and copied it to my goldcard root changing the file name to PB99IMG.Zip.
I have done a similar process many times using custom roms on my HD2 without issue. However during the flash process the screen went blank and that was that.
All I get is a charge light and it vibrates once when I power on. I guess the ROM is stuffed but if anyone has any ideas.....
Ho hum
You flashed a rom with no drivers for your screen so an amoled rom vs a slcd rom
that sounds about right, does that mean theoretically it should be running an OS even though I cant see it?
You are a star, I went through a blind rom recovery using a goldcard and a correct ROM and it is currently reloading!
What were the odds!!!!
I'm hoping I did not brick this thing because I literally just got it replaced because of screen issues and a blown speaker and broken usb port. Anyway, got the replacement home and wasted no time to use unrevoked 3 on it. Worked great. installed Fresh Evo Rom 4, installed perfect. Tested - working fine. Then I tried installing the Radio, Wimax, NV, and PRI updates. Radio and Wimax installed correctly. Went to install the NV and PRI updates and it just said installation aborted ( I was driving to pick up dinner for the family so I just let it run for a few minutes then checked on it). I then decided to just restart and start putting in my contacts and stuff. It restarted to a screen with a box and what looks like a droid jumping out of it. Removed the battery and tried again after a minute or so, same thing. Tried the VOL - and Power method to boot into Hboot, same screen. Removed my SD card per some instructions on here , same screen. Replaced the battery with another one I had per some people getting the same issue here , same thing. Frustrated I ate dinner and came back to it. Now it wont turn on at all. No charging LED light at all. Tried both batteries, one red and one black, no go. Doesnt boot at all and doesnt look like its charging. Am I royally f*kt ? Anyone have any ideas for me to try ?
From what you said...yes....I guess its time to plead ignorance and get another replacement

So what went wrong ? I've done this same method about 6 other times with my previous phone and friends phones with absolutely no problems. Any insight so this doesn't happen again ? I'm on my way through traffic to a sprint store to pick up another one and want to root it but not brick this guy too.
My guess would be that it was either interrupted or a bad install...I really couldn't tell you though

Whenever you flash a radio, NV, or PRI or something like that, when you first flash it, it then tells you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. When it reboots, you will see that odd screen, which will either be an arrow facing down with a phone, an arrow with a box, or some kind of a droid guy with a box or something. That is very important to not pull the battery during that phase (it's when it's actually writing the radio, or pri, or whatever), otherwise a brick is the result, 99% of the time. Never pull the battery during any kind of a radio flash whatsoever. As far as why it told you that the installation was aborted, I've got no idea on that one. Maybe the file you were trying to flash was corrupted, or something to that nature.
If you're sure the battery is charged up, yet you get no LED light when the phone is powered down and plugged in, the phone won't boot to the bootloader, and seems completely unresponsive, then you are most likely indeed bricked. Sorry for the bad news. Don't pull the battery during any kind of a flash, especially a radio, pri, wimax, hboot, recovery flash etc. Battery pull during flashing of important things = bad idea.
EDIT: after thinking about it for a few minutes, after you updated your radio and wimax (which you said updated successfully), did you complete the installation by rebooting? After you flashed the radio, did you reboot, and see the black screen with an arrow coming out of a box, or something like that (that screen varies based upon your hboot version or recovery version)? If not, and you just tried flashing all of them, one after the other, without rebooting inbetween each one...then that may be why the installation of the pri aborted. Then when you went to reboot, it tried to finish the installation of the radio and wimax (which if you didnt reboot initially after selecting to flash, those installations would not have been complete, so as soon as you tried to reboot, it'd have tried to finish writing the radio image, which appears to be where you pulled the battery out)
If I remember right, that screen is part of the radio update. After it flashes, when you reboot you will see that screen. You're supposed to wait until it finishes and it should send you back to the recovery screen. After that you can reboot into the rom.
I'm scratching my head though because you said the installation aborted. Maybe part of it flashed successfully but the rest didn't?
EDIT: Didn't see that the radio flashed successfully. If you can still get to that screen, letting it run it's course should eventually solve the problem.
EDIT 2: K2buckley beat me to the punch. At least I know I was right and not giving you wrong info. Sometimes it takes pulling the battery 20 or so times to actually brick the phone, so hopefully you can still recover.

Thanx for the quick responses. After the radio and wimax update it went back to the install from zip screen in clockwork. From there I ran the other update. I let it sit on that installation aborted screen as I was driving. I ran in , grabbed dinner, came back within 5 minutes and it was still on that screen. Thats when I figured I'd just put contacts and stuff after I remove the battery. Still didnt work. If I indeed "bricked" this phone, is there any way ANYONE can fix it ? HTC or otherwise ? BTW - I already bought a new phone. Just scared to root and stuff now. I mainly want root to put in ROMS that have better battery life. Although now I have 3 batteries for it because of this brick lol.

Unfortunately, if its bricked there's nothing that can be done. Since it doesn't turn on, sprint wont be able to tell it was rooted. Just be sure your SD card is "clean", and take it to sprint. See what they say about it. I'd just tell them it wont turn on. Still under 1 yr warranty...

Great idea. Never even crossed my mind to take it back. I know if they know its rooted they wont touch it which is why I was hesitant to take it back. I'm gonna try that tomorrow, thanks.
BTW - Any suggestions as to a ROM and kernel for absolutely the best battery life without sacrificing any of the Evo's stock options ?
Again, thanks for all the help guys.
The problem I'm having is now that I have Leedroid 3.3.3 installed on my Desire HD my phones camera will no longer auto-focus.
Before you ask have you made sure the auot-focus is selected in the phones camera menu yes I have.
The things I have done to rectify this are:
I've made sure I have the right Radio & Kernal for the Rom I'm Using
I've downgraded my Leedroid Rom to previous versions but nothing works
I've asked for help and left bug reports on leedroids mini site and no help
I've tried to install the Madaco 17/Nov 1.32.405.6 r1 - HTC Desire HD Stock ROM with Online Kitchen but I can't boot past the HTC screen even performing a factory reset, battery stat rest, and a dalvik wipe still no luck.
I'm not sure if Leedroids new Roms uses a different EXT format like "EXT4" where stock Roms use "EXT2" and this is why I cant get MOdacos stock rom to boot and therefore I need to wipe a EXT2 to my phone? I wouldn't know how to do that anyway.
I've done google and xda searches for how to get the auto focus to work again and all I come up with is I should go back to stock and see if this helps. Unfortunately I can't get a stock Rom to boot properly so I'm left with asking for help here.
If I'm in the wrong forum or posted in the wrong place I do apologize I believed since I'm on a Desire HD this is the most appropriate place.
Hi!
Did you solve it?
I have the same problem, the camera don't make the focus, don't know why.
thanks!!
Any solution in sight?
I have similar problem on my classic Desire (Bravo).
Autofocus fails on far away objects, everything closer than ~1m is ok, anything else I recognize some focus action in the live image but it stops on the blurry side
Using InsertCoin 1.1.1 with the latest Radio.
Seitchin ROM to an older LeeDroid didn't help)
No luck yet I'm afraid I'm in the process of backing up my phone and trying different roms to see if that helps.
I'll post here if I come up with a solution.
Solution
So I called HTC here in the UK and was told the phone needs to go back which I sent to them but before you do there are two important things to remember.
1) s-off needs to be turned to s-on
2) you need to send the phone back with the latest os version
I got my phone back and the lovely guys at the service centre even replaced the entire shell, battery cover and sim cover for free how nice.
I'm going to guess it was a hardware issue rather than a software issue because the phones software came back exactly as I sent it with t-mobiles splash screen with no sound because the sound files were never on my phone to start with.
I tried everything before sending it back updating, different roms going back to stock rom etc etc but the only thing that worked in the end was HTC fixing it.
Luckily the phone was still under warranty and the shipping and repair was free phew!
Good Luck
I had cyanogenmod 7 installed on my EVO and one day my phone just turned itself off. This time it will only boot up to the white HTC EVO screen then power itself back off and continue to cycle. I loaded into bootloader and tried to go into recovery. As soon as I select recovery it goes right back to the white screen and continues to loop. I tried to clear storage and recieved the same results. I searched a tone online and tried to find a resolution. As far as I can get is install the boot interface driver and HBOOT USB the phone. All root programs get stuck at the "waiting for device". Any help would be much appreciated.

sorry but you're pretty much S O L on this, has something to do with a bad boot.img and you can't get it to take another one might as well file a lost phone claim and pay the $100 and get a new one thats what i had to do and they just happened to have sent me the 3d instead so i guess i got a bit lucky.
i still have my evo 4g and still working on it but its been about a month and i haven't had any luck with it.
Sounds like you have no recovery or not completely rooted. You could try to put a recovery CWM or Amon-Ra file renamed PC36IMG.zip onto your sd card from your computer, put card back into phone then go in to hboot see if it will flash you a recovery then try to go into it
If that doesn't work search for a stock ruu file for the Evo, rename PC36IMG.zip, place on your card, put card back in phone, flash through hboot. This will return your phone to stock unrooted, then you try the process again

That's what happened to my phone also..It just happened out of nowhere..
I tried everything and in the end I had to file an insurance claim.
And once again, a phone running CM7 goes into this mysterious unfixable bootloop.
What is up with that?
What is up with that, I'm about to remove this rom its not really all that. Its already messed up my keyboard, sometimes I have to take the battery out just to restart it.
I Loved CM7 when I had it, but then i started seeing all these bootloop issues start up in the early part of Summer, and I refuse to put it back on. Sorry to those that dev and support it, but seriously, out of all the cases on here, and there have been a bunch, only one was on a phone that didn't have CM7 on it.

Most of those phones from the 'CM Scare" had bad nand blocks, and it had to be replaced. They had them frothe very beginning, but just decided to act up then. It also happen to some users using MIUI.
Okay my speaker got distorted so I decided to unrooted to take it in for service. Now the phone is unrooted but theres only one problem! Now the phone will boot up to the normal home screen but within 2 to five minutes, it shuts itself down and boot back up to home screen again and the cycle starts again. I have reset few times but same ting' happens. Now sprint is ordering a new phone for me hope its not the 3D i don't think I like it. So now I have my evo still but will give it to sprint once my new phone is in at the sprint store tuesday! Oh by the way, beside the speaker problem the phone was working fine as normal before the unrooting. thx

I've been using CM for about a year and NEVER had either of those two problems. There has to be an issue with something else you've loaded onto the phone that isn't playing nice.

Miui is based of cm's fixes and what not right?
Having trouble with AOSP? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295702
No, MIUI is not based on CM. It's a completely different ROM
Yeah but I'm pretty sure they use their fixes since its a port
Having trouble with AOSP? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295702
It's true that most of the cases happened on CM7, but from what I understand it can happen on any rom... and has happened on Sense and AOSP.
There's no known fix. You can try to RUU, but even if the RUU flashes properly, the phone will never boot. You're eternally stuck with hboot/fastboot. File an insurance claim, that's about all you can do. I had a similar problem with a stock, never-been-rooted Evo. I got a replacement through insurance without paying the deductible, but I was s-on.
Hopefully I don't get slammed for suggesting this, but if you don't want to pay the deductible for a "lost" phone, you can flash a radio through hboot and pull the battery. If you do it at the right time, the phone will completely brick and never turn on again. It may take a few tries. Then you can take it in and you shouldn't have to pay the deductible, as long as you play dumb of course.
I think this happens due to bad nand blocks on your boot partition, so the main cause is hardware. Something in the rom triggers the never-ending splashscreen bootloop (I'm assuming something related to the boot.img). I could be entirely wrong about this though.
You can't live in fear, if it happens it happens. It's one of the risks you take when rooting and flashing. The number of cases is small compared to the number of people with rooted Evos, especially considering only a portion of people are active on this site, and a lot of the reports come from members that wouldn't post or even be a member if they didn't have the problem. I wouldn't let the possibility deter you from running whatever rom you want.

I myself am stuck with same issue. Nothing takes. So where does hboot reside when loaded? I also have looked in vain for diagnostic flashes....
Now one thing I noticed is that I installed PDAnet and it shows it installed an app to the phone, however I cant connect. I think cause I cant boot the phone and enable what it telling me to...so how is it this software can load an apk and I cant?
Overall, I am now however learning and it has become a hobby.
Theres an answer somewhere I would think. Thinking maybe its time to tear apart and look for jtag points....
I have had this happen to me a few times, I leave the RUU on the sd card and when this happens and do what bimmerman7 wrote on the first page. This has always worked for me when I get stuck in a bootloop when trying to access recovery.
Hey folks,
Thanks for taking the time to read/assist. I don't typically do these kinds of posts and am at my wit's end!
Phone's Previous Setup - MIUI Gingerbread, Rooted (but with S-ON after the fact).
What happened:
My HTC Incredible finally got to the point of being practically unuseable with laggy behavior and random restarts and the like, so I decided to complete a reset to factory settings or wipe.
I completed my backups using Titanium (apps) and ClockworkMod Recovery (full backup). After this, I went ahead and opened up Settings and directed the phone to complete a Reset to Factory Settings. It ran through the process, rebooted, and came up jelly. While no custom apps were installed (expected), my folder settings on my main home page were saved, along with some previous text messages. I was pleasantly surprised.
From here, I wished to wipe the SD Card so as to make sure it was clean of any residual folders/files that might cause conflict down the road (based on advice from others). So, headed to the SD card part of the settings. Had to unmount the SD card to format, proceeded to do so.
Here's where things went wonky: Despite receiving a confirmation that the SD card format had proceeded, nothing else ever happened. I attempted to mount the card again w/o luck (kept getting a msg that it was now unmounted). Eventually, I decided to go ahead and restart the phone and see if that helps. Big mistake.
From this point forward, the phone refuses to fully start up into any Android ROM. Initially, it hung on the white HTC Incredible splash screen (yes, even w/ giving it an hour+ of time). I tried wiping and reflashing different ROMS over the period of the day yesterday to no avail.
Doing a full recovery via ClockworkMod (from my backup that I made before and copied back onto the SD card via USB) leaves me stuck on the HTC Incredible white splash screen.
MIUI - 2.2.10
Hangs on white splash screen
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed
MIUI - 2.2.17
Loads past white and MIUI splash screens
Instead of loading into Android homescreen, immediately loads up "Encryption" error and directs to "reset phone."
Repeated restart and attempts of resetting phone don't work
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
MIUI - 1.12.9
Hangs on white splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 7.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 6.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
I looked into HBOOT options, getting PB31IMG.ZIP and PG86IMG.ZIP.img thinking maybe I could try reverting to stock at a friend's suggestion. HBOOT sees the files and "checks" them, even briefly showing a small vertical blue loading bar at the top-right corner, but never attempts to run/update them as I am lead to expect from all the instructions/encounters I've found on the net suggest. The screen info flashes by so quickly, I can barely read it, but I confirmed that it said "checking" and not updating or such. x.x
I considered trying to flash an updated copy of ClockworkMod Recovery, but I cannot do that w/o being able to load up the phone into Android.
I cannot run anything desktop-side, like ADB, as they all require the phone started up and put into USB-debugging mode.
I've looked into and tried all this and more, but nothing seems to be working.
My next idea is to try to forcibly downgrade the phone. Reasoning being that I read that the HBOOT will not try to update if it senses that the ROM is newer than its default settings(?). So, I need a good choice of "old" ROM that I can attempt to install via the HBOOT or CWM Recovery, and verify I have the correct files for HBOOT to try updating/running.
Again, this is a speculative attempt, but I'm willing to try whatever might work! Otherwise, I've got a fancy brick and my well-being on the line w/ no $$ to replace the phone. x.x
Thanks again for reading and hopefully offering some wonderful assistance! Sorry it's so long!
Feel free to ask Qs if you need clarification on stuff.

Otherwise, I've got a fancy brick and my well-being on the line w/ no $$ to replace it. x.x
Thanks again for reading and hopefully offering some wonderful assistance! Sorry it's so long!

You need to gain s-off again before flashing with clockwork. How come you turned it back on?
"In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag."
edit:
gain s=off boot into CMW wipe data, and factory reset. Flash a new rom of your choice and then boot. should get you back to a working phone.

The first time my phone was rooted/flashed, my bf did it for me. He used Unrevoked to root it and install CWM Recovery (v2.5.1.2 presently). I recall conversation being that having S-On would be better security with regards to the cell carrier (e.g., good to leave on, bad if off as they can see you rooted). So I agreed to having it put back to S-On, which I understood he then took care of.
Fast-forward a year and he now tells me he didn't actually end up running the other Unrevoked (Forever) tool to put S-On back in place, but that it simply *was*, so he left it that way. o.o;
Keep in mind, I've flashed 3 different ROMs since he originally rooted and flashed, w/o issues.
I pulled up everything to try re-rooting it again (to gain S-Off), but the instructions required having the phone loaded up and in debugging mode, which I cannot do as I cannot start up the phone past recovery in the first place.
Did I miss something that allows it via recovery? Going to check again in the meantime.

actually its better to keep it s=off so this type of situation wont happen. Your carrier cant see your hboot from my understanding on how this phone works. They dont care if you have root or not, unless you are trying to exchange the phone for another one from them or for insurance reasons. With root you only void your warranty on the phone and not your contract or anything to do with VZW. S=off is just a NAND lock, meaning you cant add your own custom recover to the phone, and you are limited to builds that come from VZW themselves (ie the security signature check).
If you ever want to take the phone back to them because its defective or call insurance then you need to remove root and S=on. but thats the only time you need to toggle the NAND lock.
ok so you will need to ruu to stock, downgrade then gain s=off over again:

OMG I may've gotten it!
So I decided to give things another go with attempting to revert to stock again, as at this point, nothing is going to work other than via HBOOT.
I completed another reformat of the SD Card (Fat32) to be on the overcautious side and copied over ONLY the PB32IMG.zip file and restarted into HBOOT.
(Ah.. new user, so not allowed to post the link of where I got it.)
This time, much like before, it scanned, found the file, and did a parsing/loading. However, THIS TIME it actually prompted me to update! I chose yes (Vol+) and let it do its thing.
At this time, I am happy to announce that it actually is back up stock!
Wooohoo! Now to get it back to how I like it again. XD
If nothing else, hope this information helps someone else later on.

You might have lost root if you did the ruu from hboot. to check download the app "super user" from market that will tell you if you still have root or not.
Alright, now that I'm back to stock and runnin' smoothly, I need to figure out what route to take for rooting and flashing. Everyone talks about Unrevoked3, but I've heard there're other newer tools, too.
What would you recommend?
....also, sorry for the weird delay/disjointed/incomplete responses. I keep forgetting that XDA severely limits my posting capabilities. I wanted to say super thanks wolf, for all your help and sticking with me! Your input is appreciated. And yes, I'm pretty sure I lost all root, etc. It is back to "out-of-the-box" stock as far as I can tell.

unrevoked3 is the easiest way. but you will need to downgrade to android 2.2 for the security exploit.

lol now worries. easiest way to get to the 10 limit is just pad the count in here. ie just say something 10 times and you are good to go.

Good news, I'm on 2.2 stock right now (just checked to confirm). So should be able to just go ahead and run Unrevoked3 then.
Also, the most popular recovery I'm aware of is ClockworkMod Recovery. I found that it's up to version 5.0.2.0. Would you recommend anything else or know of a newer version?
Figure if I'm going to do this, might as well do it right.
