odin Question - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried hundreds of times to get my samsung drivers to work. Tired of trying...... Can I use odin to run CWM3 + EXT4 and then copy the custom rom Syndicate frozen to my SD card. The rom is not on my SD card yet it is still on my PC.

Whats are your problems with odin?

No problems with odin. What I mean is I cant Sync my phone to my PC using the SAMSUNG drivers So this will be the first time I have used odin. I have a great idea how it works. My question is after I download the EB13 Extended-3.tar. Which I assume this is a auto convert to EXT4 with CWM3. on a stock rom. can I flash a rom using odin in the keyboard #1 + POWER without it being on my SD card?

You cannot flash a custom Rom using odin

Yes you can.flash.the.stock extended rom without it being on your SD card.
Sent From My Evo Killer!

If you use odin to flash the pre rooted version of eb13 then put what ever roms you want on your sd card boot into cwm via 3 finger and flash roms all ud like. After wipeing data cache and davlick 3 times. Unless you come across a bad file and soft brick your phone you really shouldn't need the pc at all u can download roms straight of the xda pagetoo your sd card

Download dolphin hd browser if u haven't yet and use your phone via wifi or 3g or 4g to get your roms

You won't get odin to work if you pc does not recongnize your phone. If you are just trying to get stuff on your sd card to flash you could always pull the card and put it into a generic reader and then reinstall in your phone when you have added the zips.

So what you are saying is that your computer sees your phone in download mode but not to connect to storage. Have you tried toggling usb debug mode in application settings?

[Q] new to xda; how do I flash using Rogue CWM?

Hi, I've been trying to flash my Epic 4G Touch for days now but after 2 nights without sleeping, including right now at 3:56am,
I still haven't found out how to do so. I've been searching and found a website to root and flash my recovery, I'm using Team-Rogue CWM Recovery, I used
Odin3Execution x1.81 to install my rooted EL29 stock ROM which works but I can't seem to flash no matter where I place the files on my phone.
I have another Odin that I found online called Odin3 v182 that has a lot more stuff on it like: pda, bootloader, phone, csc, etc. but I don't know what it's for.
I'm completely new at this so VERY detailed steps would be AMAZINGLY appreciated, and I could actually go to sleep...-_-...drowsy...
I would definitely follow this thread, it will make everything alot easier for you!

I am confused as well, how are you in xda under the Epic Touch and you seem to be using flashing methods from other sites. No need to be confuse everything you want is in development and look at the stickys on top and the wiki page for a breakdown of everything Epic Touch...

Odin3Execution x1.81 to install my rooted EL29 stock ROM which works but I can't seem to flash no matter where I place the files on my phone.
It seems like you are making the simple thing much complicated.
1. There are two different ways flashing the Rom. Using Rogue recovery is one and another one is using odin.
2. If you want to use the Rogue, you must place the rom zip file into your internal SD card or external. You can find out many rooted zip files from the development section.
3. Using odin also not that difficult. For this, you need to download the one-click self-extract package exe file. These files also available from the development section. Download it to your PC, execute it from PC. It will create a foler name 'odin'. Connect your phone to pc thru micro usb and put the phone into download mode (vol down + power at the same time). run the program from pc. click the vol up button to continue. If odin program from your pc shows the com port, then just click the 'start' button from pc.
Maybe it's your first time flashing the rom. So, it may looks complicated, but actually it's simple steps once you are used to these steps. So, choose the method first - zip or odin. Select the rom from development section and check the instruction for that specific rom. Just follow the instruction on the same page where the downloadable file provided.
For any more questions, please don't hesitate.
Thanks for replying

I got some sleep last night and mind mind is clear now...phew...
I'm sorry I just tried flashing last night and got hanged on the galaxy s2 logo, also forgot to create a nandroid, but I just reinstalled my stock EL29 with root and I'm going to try again.
Here's what I did wrong:
1.download ROM/kernel
2.move the ROM/kernel .zip file into external_sd on my phone
3.go to CWM recovery and select install zip from sd card
4.proceeded with the flash, as well as Zedomax V3 kernel flash, and got
hanged on the boot logo.
5.reinstall stock EL29 with root
6.now I'm here...lol
What do I do to prevent hanging up the phone again or even worse bricking?

I honestly having been reading into this for about a whole week straight, 7 day week, and I slept only 2 of those days because people were being vague about their instructions so I couldn't seem to even transfer the files into my external_sd card in .zip format. The files kept showing as individual files where you could enter each and every one of them but not able to use them.
I barely got it this morning, to flash, but then I got hung up on the boot and had to reinstall the EL29 stock w/root and now I'm going to try and use a different ROM and actually CLEAR the cache, davik cache, and data. Plus backup using the Nandroid in Team Rogue CWM and titanium backup.
I still don't know exactly why it got hung up though so if you know I'd be really grateful!
I'll try it this time

Thanks, I'll do that.
Anything else you know about why I'm hanging up at the boot logo I'd appreciate it!
Currently kernel may not support the Zedomax.
Did you try odin method to apply the flash the new kernel?
(Be careful to put the right file to the right place for odin. Putting files to wrong place could be a reason of bricked phone)
One question - Is there any reason that you are trying to flash Zedomax kernel? It seems like it's quite outdated...
You can reference the thread -

LOL! I thought Zedomax V3 was the latest kernel! XD haha
That just proves that I have no idea what I'm doing..
I'm actually to afraid to use odin to to the "accidental" bricking amount that's happened, from what I've read there's a lot of them.
I'm planning on doing the flash right now, just finished backing up on titanium backup, and I just transferred the ROM on my phone.
Did I place it correctly?
I connected the phone using USB mass storage and open the file explorer to view my phones files then I opened "External_SD" which was empty and placed my ROM there.

[Q] Get back from ics to gingerbread

First of all, sorry if my English isn't so good. So I have a problem here with my gio. It's rooted, at first I had the gingerbread 2.3.3, I upgraded to ICS 4.0.3 beta 8, all good no problem but I am not very happy with this version because my internet connection works very hard from how it worked on gingerbread, and a lot more, sometimes it crashes gonna restart my devices. And I want to get back to gingerbread, I have seen some tutorials and I understand that I have to download the odin software, with the gingerbread driver and must put my phone into the downloading mode, and after I make the settings in odin I must connect via usb my phone, I've done that and the odin won't recognize my phone. I have Samsung kies installed, I have seen that it must be closed, I have been closed, end task but not a chance. I have a pc and a laptop, on both the problem is the same. What do you think it is?
Gonna mention that I am new with the android os.
make sure that you have installed the drivers
Amm do you wanna have the stock ginger? (2.3.3) cause u can flash any other rom like cm, im.supposing that you have instaled cwm. No need to.use odin
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
I understand. Yes I have installed cwm, so I just copy the file on memory card go to cwm recov mode and apply the zip?
Yep
Depends on if you want back to Gingerbread with an ext4 or an RFS system.
ext4: just flash a Gingerbread ROM with a compatible kernel. Done.
RFS: Use Odin. The stock recovery should be able to reformat /data and /cache properly. If it doesn't there are ways to restore them through a CWM-based recovery.

[Q] Stuck on TWRP

I wiped flashed file but it keeps booting into the modified TWRP RECOVERY? Stuck at this point.
Anyone have any ideas?
I was on TWRP 2.4.1 Newest version
MA5 Stock Deodexed MA5 Firmwares
OK Now a little freaked out. I can't get to billards file or any of my back ups because they were on my external sd card!!!! I hate trying to learn new stuff (old dog)
I'm so used to HTC and when I think I have a grasp of Sammy I F&ck it up!
Oh yeah and my back ups on PC are gone because of hard drive crash! FFFFUUUUDDDDGGGGEEEE!!!!!!!
Any help to get me back to where I was before I flashed this thing would be very much appreciated. Hell I'll take a bootable ROM of any kind. Sweating bullets!
I have the mskips 3.0 toolkit can that help? I scared ****less to do anything!
I don't have ideas of why. But if you have ROM, try flashing it and see if it'll boot. Then at least you can get the rom you want later and maybe your backups.

It's (TWRP) not showing anything under the external sd card and I'm not sure how to mount the external sd card? Under mount there are some options problem is this is a modified version of TWRP 2.3.2.3 or something close to that. Just confused on how to just get a stock rom back on the thing?
thank you very much for your reply

I had this problem a few times. I know I solved it by just flashing back to stock and formatted everything. I know that's probably excessive and you'll lose a lot of info but it's better than having a very expensive paper weight. Lol

I can't see anything on my sd card and since this is some sort of modified version of TWRP it can only see what's on the internal memory. But none of my back ups are on the internaland whenever it rebooots it always boots the the modified version of TWRP. Really stumped i don't know adb so I don't know if I can even push anything to the phone?
Don't mind losing data no biggie there but I'm like you don't want it totally hosed.
Thanks Charles
Use odin to flash latest twrp over the funky one. Then use real twrp to access sd card. Also before that, remove sd card and copy contents to new hard drive using a card reader.

Copying files now. Quick question/advice If I can see my old TWRP file in my internal memory could I flash that file with this weird modified version of TWRP? Then I could flash any file from my sd card stock or custom ROM. If not to flash the TWRP file in Odin do I place it in PDA the slot and which buttons do I need to check (reboot etc)?
Wait I can't use Odin because my PC can't recognize or see my phone because of this modified version of TWRP. Damn it!
My apologies for the noob questions just scared ****less to do anything.
My sd card is wiped clean
So I could put a file on sd card but this modified version of TWRP can't see my external sd card.
Thank you for your time
Charles
To use odin you have to put the phone in "download mode" not recovery. It's a special mode different from recovery or OS or bootloader. Power off the phone and press & hold UPvol+home+power until you get the download mode screen.
It doesn't matter what kind of recovery or anything else you have. It works even with no recovery or kernel or bootloader or OS at all.
Get the tar version of openrecovery 2.4.1.0 (or whatevers latest you future readers). Don't unpack the tar.
Uncheck reboot.
Use the PDA button, select the downloaded tar.
After flashing is done and it says 1 success 0 error, bpull the battery.
This next is annoying and I can't really believe there is no better way, but I need to do it this way or else the newly flashed recovery doesn't "take" and I have to flash it again. Just once the first time after flashing. After that no problem. Anyway, hold DOWNvol+home+power, and while holding all those, put the battery back in.
Now you should have a good fully functional useful TWRP recovery that you can use to flash all kinds of things from the sd card, backup all kinds of things to the sd card, access the internal main OS flash drive, the internal "sdcard" and external sdcard, etc.

Every rom won't flash easily

Hello, i've been trying lots of different roms but basically every time i try to change my rom (running 4.3 google edition), i put the zip file in my internal sd card by usb cable, go on recovery, flash it, and it either says bad file- not compatible or it flashes but won't boot.
I tried all different recoveries. All of them suck as they don't have usb mounting working..
ATM I'm running Philz touch recovery that i downloaded a month ago.
Also, my phone has this weird problem with wifis disconnecting and not reconnecting sometimes, it started a few months ago..
Anybody know why is this happening? Should i try other recoveries? Bad USb connection? I tried downloading it on wifi too..
Right now i flashed a old version of wicked that i had saved in my internal sd because usb mounting wouldn't work in recovery..
Are you checking md5 sum of your files?
What are your procedure for flashing(steps you're taking)?
i have seen and heard problem with philz touch and twrp for a while now
philz touch doesnt like allot of roms
twrp works for some people, and doesnt for others
so try a different recovery. if you want the most stability install cwm or cwm touch. if problems still persist, try wiping internal storage. at one point i couldnt get anything to flash untill i wiped it

If you like TWRP and would prefer to use it, use the 2.5.2 version. There is a flashable zip for it in the TWRP thread somewhere. You will have to search for it...
That version is far more stable than the latest versions.

Hi I couldn't use twrp it didn't work for me so I suggest you download cwm touch works great. Also when you download the rom from your computer make sure its going to the root of your EXTERNAL sd card. This is usually achieved as mounting as disk drive and your device will showup as external drive D or E. Then when you download your rom download to external drive D orE which ever name it gave your device when mounting as disk drive. This way the rom is placed on your external sd card. and when your in cwm you will press download rom from external sd card scroll down and find your rom then you should be good to go. Hope this helps .

Bad usb cables can cause problems so if you know for sure that the md5 was good and you followed all dev instructions related to wiping before install it wouldn't hurt to try a different cable.

[q] help!! Phone wont work

I'm in a sticky situation.
I was sick and tired of having a 26% Android System usage on I747UCUFNE4 and decided to try a likewise s5 rom.
I downloaded the file and put it on my external SD card. I've done this many times with many ROMs.
It can't open up the ROM file, and I have no backups.
My computer is sort of old and it won't recognize SD cards, and I can't boot to download a new ROM. I basically only have Odin, and am on the I747UCUFNE4 bootloader/modem. How can I fix this?
If it couldn't flash the ROM, you should be able to boot back into whatever you were using before.
Unless you manually formatted /system first. (I really hope you didn't). But if you did you will have to find a computer you can copy to the SD with. There's no other way I can see unless you have another phone you can download on.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I did format /system...and i couldn't boot back into anything after trying to switch ROMs. My phone has nothing in the /sdcard folder, only /cwm and I think I need a system dump or something, but I'm not familiar with that. Also my CSC(?) is missing as well apparently according to my computer.
Sounds like you're not going anywhere until you can find a way to plug your micro-sd into your computer. I recommend something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/93...-nh4xqn1xcUBK_0sF0M6TNJbFgNCI4FH9waAjD98P8HAQ
The micro-sd slots into the back and it plugs into your usb port (I assume your computer can't be old enough that it doesn't have USB). Alternatively, your local Best Buy should have something like this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insigni...9&skuId=3602009&st=micro sd reader&cp=1&lp=15
Your other choice is to use Odin to flash a stock rom back to your device: http://www.technobezz.com/flash-stock-rom-via-odin-samsung-galaxy-s3/
Then, once you have a working OS/phone, just put CWMR back on and flash your favorite rom again.
Can he not push the file with adb?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 running TMS3KK-2.0
Adb could work if he has an insecure kernel.
However, @Jakeuten, I think I just figured a way out! I was thinking Odin was no good since you are on NE4 and there's no firmware for that. But, it is OK to flash older ROMs.
Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917
Download the 4.3 stock tar file in Step 4.
Flash in Odin.
That should only contain the system and kernel, just like a regular stock ROM you'd flash in recovery. The only difference is you can flash this from Odin.
Hopefully that'll get you back to where you can use your device and can then flash whatever you want from there. (Just don't wipe system before flashing again! Ever!)
I hope that helps! Let us know!
