Greetings
Back with a new question I have just bought a new SD card, 8gb, i have not yet used it though and what i wanna know is how to copy my current SD apps, data saves etc etc to my new card! I basically have the 2GB on my phone with 500mb partition and full of apps (around 50-60) and thing is i cant re-download them cause i dont have WiFi connection and all my current ones where downloaded from my friends house xD
I just want my new card to have the exact same things like my current one just 6 more GB of memory
Also how can i increase the 500mb partition to 1gb?
thx a lot
ps: i dont have an SD adaptor with me atm but i will from monday
install amon_ra's recovery image 1.5.2 if not already done. make a nandroid + ext backup, copy everything from sdcard to pc, switch sdcards, plug in usb cable, turn back on to recovery, enter on pc:
adb shell
sdparted -es 1024M -ss 0
copy everything back sdcard, restore nandroid backup.
HI there
what i did that i pluged my hero with original SD card(2GB) and copyed all the contents to new desktop folder in my computer, then turned off my Hero and took ot the 2GB original card out and inserted new 8GB SDHC card in and copy back all the contents from my new desktop folder.
and Hero working fine as before reseted hero few time no problem
I do not i have done it right way or not
please can someone tell did i do it right way or any other way to do sd card swap?
Thanks

@Kendong2
i have amon_ra 1.3.2, does it work with that?
adb shell
sdparted -es 1024M -ss 0
is this for memory partition? can i do that without the use of pc since everytime i tried with adb i failed
Btw how should i install amon_ra 1.3.2? With Flash Recovery? If yes, do you know what "version" supports installing? I have 9/9/09 version but it is the fixed version and it doesnt work
@gugi_sat
You copied everything apart from apps (if u had it partitioned) i guess
thats what i had done but my apps werent copied, but if your apps were on ur internal memory then u copied everything completely

see here for installation. you can use the first option since you have the image already installed. should work with 1.3.2 also, but it doesn't support ext4. word is that ext2 is recommended for the partition, as it doesn't stress the sdcard as much as ext3 or 4 does. you can do it on a pc, but you need to find out in what order to create the partitions, 1. ext 2. fat or vice-versa.

correct.
if i partitioned with 1.3.2 Amon_ra i should have an SD with fat32 + ext2 + swap...
so my apps are on ext2, the best ext i could possibly have them? so i shouldnt download newest amon ra?
so, how do i make a nandroid backup? my nandroid v2.2 says only backup, does that mean apps aswell? also after backup, i copy my files to my pc, put new SD card, copy backup folder on SD and restore backup on new card?

better update to 1.5.2, i can confirm that it works perfectly with an ext2 partition if you select nandroid + ext. have been switching roms all day
use the commands i gave you, then the swap partition won't be created, it is not used in mcr3.0.
with 1.5.2 you can also use ext3 or 4, but it is said to age the sdcard faster. i use ext2 on my card.
i hope i CAN update to 1.5.2 >.> i had used 3-4 different versions of Flash Rec in order to get it done
I dont have nandroid + ext so i guess i NEED 1.5.2?:/
When u switch roms and backup you KEEP the apps?
I have MCR2.9 btw, should i update amon ra to 1.5.2, backup, copy the backup, flash 3.0 and then restore backup on my new SD?>.>
i dont need ext3 and 4 anw whats the difference (and use) of them anw?:S
thx for helping so far btw
if you have amon_ra now you can update. see post #5 in this thread.
with nand+ext you keep the apps, that is the beauty of it. make a backup wipe all, test whatever roms you like, after that restore and you're back. it's like having a second hero.
if you make a backup, then flash a rom, then restore your backup you have flashed for nothing. if you want to update your rom make a backup, update the rom, if everything works you can delete the backup. can't be this hard...?
its not....
i just have 2.73 hero and flashrec doesnt work on my hero
i installed amon ra A LONG time ago (even before i realised what rooting was, LOL, i didnt know what i actually did >.>)
and as far as am concerned i tried various versions of flashrec and only one worked i am trying now with various flashrec versions.. 09/09/09, 09/11/07 etc etc but i cant get one to work

where do i type? I have to put cmd.exe shortcut into the adb directory folder? and then just start it?xD
hello, again
i've managed to flash 1.5.2 but whenever i perform nandroid backup i get Error: Run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb

do you have an ext4 partition on your card?
select the "move recovery.log to sd" menu item after you got the error message, then reboot your phone, mount to pc and find recovery.log on your sdcard. give it to us.
have the same nand problem as above

are you sure you have the latest recovery image? 1.5.2 should contain nandroid v2.2.2, since there were problems with the ext part in v2.2.1.
edit: check it by doing "adb shell mount" while the phone is powered up (not in recovery!). if your result contains a line like this:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /system/sd type ext2 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue)
then you have an ext partition. the bold part is where you can see which type it is.
also if you don't know if you have an ext partition you most certainly do not have on, in this case why would you try to back it up?

bump with a new question...
i noticed that my SD card is running rather slow, is it a faulty one or should it run properly?
Its a SanDisk 8gb Class 2! Is class 2 really that slower? My old one was 2gb Class 4 and it wasnt running smoothly but not that slow :S
The shop manager told me that i can replace it or "upgrade" it to a better Class card.. Should i just replace it or get an 8GB Class 4/6?
thx

you could try replacing, but by definition class 6 should be faster than class 2 or 4. whether this has an effect on your phone, or if it is only marketing fairy tales, or manufacturer lies, who can tell for sure? it varies from card to card, from manufacturer to manufacturer, if i were you i'd get a class 6 card.
What for is this folder used anyway ? Maket cache, rom updates, installing programs from pc? Does anyone has a clue? Beacuse I see 130 MB of free space there (nand I suspect - which is FAST compared to SD).
/cache is a partition:
Code:
/dev/block/mtdblock4 on /cache type yaffs2 (rw,nosuid,nodev)
unless you want to repartition the nand (which nobody has done yet afaik) you won't be able to use this space... at least not really practicable.
First I want to know what it is used for, how much space will be used and in what condition. I have several ideas how to use it, but first I need to know how much space I have to play with.
The easy way to go is to use loop files for directories and mount them in the /data/ folder. The hard way is to go in recovery mode copy the contents of /data/ to SD linux partition, use tools provided from recovery and resize /data/ ana /cache/ then copy the backed-up contents on the SD to /data/.
Somebody ?
Not certain, but I thought the /cache was for an RUU downloading the HEROIMG.ZIP file that it needs to perform the update. Also, I though fastboot used it to store the img file temporarily when booting or flashing an image.
Not sure though, so might need more investigation.

i don't think any of this is gonna happen, but don't let that stop you from anything. here are my worries:
- loop file for dirs: so then you have a (let's say) 80mb directory in /data. what are you going to with it? for me that would be to small for apps, it is even less than the regurlar internal /data.
- do you have tools to repartition the internal nand? i am just wondering, because it seems nobody has done it so far. or do you have reports of successfull partitioning? should it even work with parted?

My idea was to use the loop file for dalvik-cache for example or any other dir that does not go beyond for example 80 megs. For partitioning there are nand tools available on the net, and it is not so hard to compile them for arm arch. Bul all of this is poinless if we do not know how much space is gonna be used from the /cache folder. And what for it is used by Android OS.
I don't really thing it will work too, but nobody knows till it's tested. This are just thoughts. Last night I found out that OS deletes the whole contents of the /cache folder on successful boot, all except dirs. That was strange for me cause last evening I had a couple of "Download.app, Download-1.app and so on" files which survived successful reboot, bug suddenly they were deleted. So the only thing that's left to experiment with is repartition nand, but for that ... again the min. free space has to be known.
I have app2sd setup and due to some issue (perhaps unrelated) i want to remove it.
i've booted in to recovery and gone in to ADB shell and loaded up parted. when i do a print i see my 3 partitions. i use RM to remove them and i dont get any errors, just dumps back to the prompt. i do a print again and see no change.
I tried using the recover partition tool, but it doesnt work as well. i found a log and its doing the same thing i did by hand.
from recovery i mounted the SD to USB and tried to do it from there as well with disk manager and diskpart. with diskpart i never got any errors deleting, but, it didnt delete. with disk manager i could remove the ext and swap fine but not the fat, i just wasnt given the option.
is there some sort of lock or something im missing?
Its this program for windows i used it formats your sd card. I cant rememb er the name but i googled how to unpartition a micro sd card. Hope that helps a bit.

i wasnt able to find anything that did a full wipe of the SD. just format utilities that work with the already created partitions.
thanks
I've been trying to format my partitioned SD card which is 8Gb in total, and I had a 7Gb FAT32 primary and a 1Gb EXT3 on it. A read only issue came up with it yesterday so decided to go and do a full format of the SD card in Gparted.
However, now, even when I delete all partitions on the card (using Gparted), it's only being reported as 1Gb capacity. I don't know what else I can do to get the other 7Gb back.
Any ideas?
hi
try this on windows pc
search on google "mini tool partition wizard home edition " it's free.
sorry i can't make link at the moment !
That program reports the SD card as just 1Gb as well.
Any other ideas how to retrieve my missing 7Gb anyone?
Just try to make a new partition in Rom Manager or your recovery.
In the process of trying to fix the issue I done a factory reset, but when I try to install ROM Manager Android crashes and restarts, and doesn't install it. Most apps install OK to the internal memory, but it doesn't like ROM Manager and some others and will just crash.
I did have it installed prior to my problems, but even in recovery I now can't access anything apart from wipe date/factory reset in the basic Android recovery. I can't apply the update.zip required to get into Clockwork recovery as it was on the SD card, which I have the problem with.
Any ideas?
In windows right click my computer then manage in the left click disc manger (I think its called that) look at the partitions if you have more then witch there will be for android (Linux) you can remove all of them and make 1 whitch will give you the full useable size of a 8gb SD card but this will effect you android phone
Hope this helps
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
That's the first thing I tried, and all partition programs I've tried are showing the same issue of hiding 7Gb. (GParted/mini tool partition wizard home edition/Windows Disk Management)
Do you have a Linux distro? Ok, try the following:
$ sudo fdisk -l
Find which sdX is your SD card. Then try:
$ sudo cfdisk -z /dev/<your SD card>
If even using this you can't get all your space back, you can try the cfdisk with -c/-h/-s options, but you will have to Google a little bit to find how these options work.

I've already tried GParted so same thing. Doesn't work.
Problem fixed.
I tried putting it in to a camera and formatting it, and that fixed the corrupt partition table.

Guess what guys, I thought it would be a smart idea to format my Dincs internal storage to NTFS...I needed to transfer a big file and didn't have anything on it so it seemed like a good idea. Yes I didn't have a flash drive. Anyway, it didn't turn out good. I'm not really worried about being able to use it again (I have a 32gb sd card) but I don't like broken things. I'd like to fix it, I've already done some homework but have got no results. I am currently running this for anyone interested. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143575 Any ideas on how to get it to work again? Even my computer won't read it -___-

Do you have adb setup and working on your pc?
You need to be in recovery and then open an adb shell. Run the folowing hitting enter after each line.
Code:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
print
You will see a line starting with "Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0p3: ...MB"
What ever that size says at the end use in the following line.
Code:
mkpartfs fat32 0 ...MB
