WTF with the XDA Flash advert!! - About xda-developers.com

Just opened up my FF to read XDA and was confronted with a big box Flash ad that covered the forum (the forum underneath was greyed out and ad said it was an XDA advert) . No way to get rid of it, no little box and Adblock didn't give an option so I was forced to either follow the advert or close the browser. Guess what I did. And I will continue to close the browser on XDA permanently if this is the kind of money making garbage that I am confronted with.

Didn't know there were ads running on here... paused AdBlock quickly and what do you know, 30 second page render delay due to some crappy ad!
*turns Adblock extension back on*

I run forums myself so I know the importance of adds. The problem with this one was it locked you in. You either had to click and follow or shut the browser altogether there was no other choice, no way just to close the add. It was like the iffy web sites of a few years ago where everytime you tried to close it would mean you opened another window. Not good practice at all.

I've heard of these before. I've never actually seen one though. Either way, this is in the wrong forum, so I'm moving it.

ive never seen this either

Well I know they exist... I've seen screenies

I started using adblock because greedy forum owners starting using the most annoying adverts ever.
Now you all suffer. Adblock plus ftw

The admins are aware of these and are looking to remove them.

Thank you. I really should have taken a screen shot but at the time I was so annoyed I just closed the browser. If it helps in tracking the ad was for a laptop but unfortunately I cannot remember the make.

Whenever this happens, take a screenshot and send me a PM with the image. We hate pop up ads and want to kill them when they appear.

good idea, I'll try

Here it is again but this time with an X so you can close it.

I hate the expanding ads currently :/ Ones that "drop down" when you mouseover and run over the top of the forum menus - i have to wait for ad to bugger off before you can go to subs page etc.
I've got adblock running now, but more than happy to add an exception for xda if the ads stay contained to their box
(premium app user - just so you know i'm genuine about supporting, but not when it actually makes the forums harder to use)

If there is one spicific ad causing users a major problem in viewing the site then the admins MIGHT consider removing that particular ad, however the ads are what pay the server costs so.......

If you are seeing full-screen ads, or any kind of pop-up or overlay, please post a screenshot, as they WILL be removed.
that was really annoying to me too, and I was really surprise that this site would have a pop up ad like that. Then I realize that if the cursor passes over the ad then it will open. You don't have to click on it for it to open, so I don't know if that would be consider a pop up ad.
Like he said the ads are there to pay for the server, but this particular family dollar ad takes it to a different level.
don't navigate the mouse over the ad or else it will open and take up most of the screen. To me that is close to being malicious

You want your browser "light", yet are willing to put up with ads that eat up your bandwidth and can even redirect you to potential security threats?
Yeah, sounds like you've got everything under control. But do please whine some more for us, because everyone automatically respects complaints by someone who gives lame (and probably pure BS) excuses to dismiss the most logical solution to your problems.

actually the most logical answer would be to take the offending ads down. ads dont bother me in general and i understand that sites make their $ by serving up ads, so the question is why would u block the very ads that allow this forum 2 exist??
and its not whining, its a pop up ad. its annoying.
it isnt a BS excuse btw. i dont have adblock because i dont want to have it. i dont need to explain or justify myself to you. if the mods agree with me that it is an annoyance we shouldnt have to deal with they will take it down. if they deem it ok, i will still rock out w/ xda as it is a valuable source of info, i will just try harder to not mouse over anything accidentally.
i imagine the ad will eat up my fios bandwith and cripple my internet connection. this isnt 200 w/ 56k anymore man. i run a quadcore w 4gb of ram and have a fiber line to my house. i have this PLENTY under control. its just a lil minor thing. how about you mind your business and move along, keep your criticism to yourself...
the offending ads only maximize when "rolled-over" and as said have a X button in top right of all those type of ads.
however today i installed "ad blocker plus" on firefox and its counterpart "easylist" for IE9 (known as tracking protection lists, in ie add-ons ).
no ads anywhere, in either web browser!

Please eliminate audible ads on in the XDA forums!!!

I love XDA. This site has provided me with a great deal of useful information for all of my Android phones.
However, the audible ads you guys are incorporating into the site lately are absolutely obnoxious and I've gotten to the point where browsing the forums is no longer enjoyable. Every few minutes I get some person trying to sell me something through my headphones while drowning out my music. And since I typically have 3+ XDA tabs open I end up having to close out of all of them until I eliminate the one with the running audible ad.
This is completely obnoxious and greatly diminishes the user experience on this site.
If there is a way to disable the sound on this site through some user settings then please let me know. I'm all ears, obviously...
I've flagged this to the admin. We dont deliberately put these ads on the forum, some of them slip through the net so to speak.

First few days turned the sound down, but if I was at a different website listening to a video, and an xda tab was open, it would play an ad in the background.
Finally uninstalled flash player, now I just get nagged to re-install flash every few minutes that I'm on xda.
Ads may vary depending on your location. I think you must blame the ad provider.
Edit : Use aboutlugin(s) and disable flash, works on chrome.

you can google how to block ads for IE9. Its under settings/safety/tracking protection. There is a file you can enable there that you download that blocks ads.
I got my list from www.privacytracker.org

Yeah glad I found this thread as the ad's have been completely annoying. Recently I've been seeing WAYYYY more of the audible video ad's around here. The Gordon Ramsy one is the most freq one I come across. Still getting them right now though.
Hope it gets sorted out as it deff hurts the experience here. I understand the ad's are needed to help support the site but the audible ones are a lil much imho.
We're sorry about the audio ads. We hate them too, and they'll be gone very soon. Please continue to report when you hear such ads. Screenshots always help.

I had a thread about this but it was closed by Admin. Not sure why. Anyhow I found a way to stop them on Google Chrome for those who might be interested. go to this link

there is about halfway down a link that says adblock. All you do is drag that link to your bookmarks bar. it is a firefox addon that works on google chrome.

Intrusive ads? Post here!

The internet is full of advertisments and let's face it, almost every site that has an ounce of traffic uses ad revenue. The intention of xda is not to burden its members with ads that distract from the user experience. With that being said, if you have a problematic ad, please take a screenshot of the ad and post here so admin can take care of it. right now, that is the solution in place.
Thanks for your help in keeping XDA "intrusive ad free".

It doesn't happen all the time but I have this "mobprizes" redirect when visiting XDA.
Happened to me a few times so far, not sure if others are experiencing it.
Same as chazam ^^^^
First instance of it today. Web URL is mobprizes.com and the site header says 'Android Rewards'. Tried to browse XDA via Dolphin browser on Android and was auto-redirected to this spam page; you cannot press 'Back' or 'Exit' in the browser and have to click 'OK', whereupon another window opens asking you to enter your mob number (supposedly so they can contact you to sort out sending you your prize - which if you do a quick search on Google means you will receive plenty of premium rate text messages and no prize!).
Not sure what you folks can do but thought would mention it.
Incidentally, when performing a search re: this, one of the replies was on Yahoo Answers - when I clicked on this I was redirected to the same damn Android Rewards page!
I also noticed another forum in the search results is experiencing the same thing. Seems to be spreading.
Attached.
That ad at the bottom left corner just popped up from nowhere. I may not have captured it completely sry...
Edit: it's an IE rollover to view ad.
Hey everyone,
I have also created a forum where people (including myself) are experiencing similar problems.
Perhaps it would be a great idea to share our knowledge between the two forums and see what we can do to get rid of these annoying ads.
would of if i didnt have ad block

No offence meant to anyone here, but I'm quite surprised at all of this. Adblocks for Chrome and Firefox are available easily, nobody uses IE anymore and if you're on XDA you probably have a rooted phone and should logically therefore have an adblock app. If you really dislike ads, there's no need to put up with them

that's fine, I understand, I have no issue with XDA asking for donation or anything. But how is this an reason for an independent forum app? it's kinda rude, saying that XDA is doing it for bucks,
since they did this to provide users an independent forum app,
you justified the means without proper knowledge,
And to put it, Tapatalk is a paid app. And XDA offers free as well as premium app. So users who don't have Tapatalk has the option to get the free XDA app, if they have only registered on XDA for browsing the forums. Not many users are members of different forums.
i got both...but to be honest i only use XDA app now as this is the only forum i check. and if by me having the premium version helps support for the maintenance of the site, it is the least i can do for what i have learned from XDA over the last two years and the goodies that i have done to my phone to make it better

Reread your thread title and OP. Nowhere does it state that it's directed to people who use multiple forums, and you probably would have received different replies completely if you had made that clear. All you did was make the XDA app seem useless, which is wrong, because for people who only use XDA there's no point paying for tapatalk.

Personally, I don't see any difference between the two. They are identical to me, except that Tap can have multiple forums in it, obviously.
But I am having a problem with both and can't use any of the four forum apps I have purchased:
XDA Premium (phone)
XDA HD (tablet)
TapaTalk HD
TapaTalk 2
Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to support the developers! I'm not bragging, but I have purchased about 300 apps in the last year and most of them worked fine without paying for them. I just wanted to make clear that this is not about complaining because of spending the money. I just sincerely want to be able to use them and I can't use any of the four.
What I mean by that, is that after scouring XDA and Google, I cannot find any help on how to view messages that I have received email notifications for, like when someone responds directly to one of your posts, or even when they post in a thread/forum you are Subscribed to.
I know that I can go into the XDA/TapaTalk (2) apps and go to:
LATEST >> PARTICIPATED
... But that doesn't take me to the posts that I have been notified about, like if I tap the link in the email and it takes me right to the message, ya know?
So I end up tapping the link and trying to view the messages in the browser on my phone, but since XDA does not have a mobile version of their web site, I end up double-tapping it to try to blow it up and then moving it all around the screen, back and forth, to try to read the message.
And of course, posting that way is Hell! It is very difficult to get it to go back up in the message and you can't even see a whole sentence, because it's blown up and the regular display is microscopic!
Does anyonne know how it is done? I love the concept of these apps, but I cannot believe that they would have left that sort of feature out, given that people would constantly be responding to posts they are notified about, right?
So I figure that I must be missing something. But I have looked at these apps for almost a year now (and recently purchased the new TapaTalk 2, hoping it had stuff the original doesn't) and I just can't find how to do this.
Does anyone know how this is done? Please?
Again, going to LATEST >> PARTICIPATED does not list/take me to the messages I am being notified about. The threads are in the list somewhere, I'm sure, but I'm hoping to do it like I do when I tap on the link in an email message. It would be really cool if you tapped on one and it opened Tap right to that specific message that you're being notified about!
I may have missed this answer somewhere in these forums, but I swear, I did scour them as best I could and I just cannot find this specific help! Nor did I find any help from the Tap folks, except how a forum owner could add their forum and a Google search produced the same result.
I apologize for the long message. I just wanted to make sure that I was absolutely clear, so that folks did not just guide me to "LATEST >> PARTICIPATED".
Thanks!!!

Thanks!!!

Big post.
So basically what you want is when you click on a link on any other app (mail for eg. since its giving you notifications). You need to clear all the defaults you have set around with your browsers. (do it from settings»applications»manage»here).
After that whenever you click on a link, it will show up a popup to chose the app to procede for the link. If the link is from xda use tapatalk (it'll take you to the post right away), if from other site, use your preffered browser. Again do not set anything as default as tapatalk cannot open other sites and you will need to clear the defaults again.
A Hero Can Be Anyone.
Dear Bruce Wayne,
Okay, I did what you said and it did not take me to the exact message. But it did take me to the same page, which makes it just a matter of scrolling down a few swipes up worth to scroll down to the message, which is certainly plenty good enough!
Plus, now I understand why this app's default posts per page is set to 10.
Thanks a bunch for your help, Bruce! I mean that! I can now, finally, use TapaTalk after a year of owning it! And that's because you took a few minutes out of your time to answer my question simply and plainly, without first assuming a certain level of knowledge on my part and I really appreciate that!
And I'm sincerely not trying to patronize you. As I said, I do mean that. It can be very difficult to get help, when so many people see a question as being "stupid" and you can't find anything on the web, ya know?
There was one thing I noticed though in the TapaTalk 2 app, which was that there was no option to "Quote" when responding (I wanted to quote a couple of sentences of you response when I replied).
Is there a trick to making it show that option that you know of?
If there isn't one, how would you know if it's responding to the message you're looking at on the screen?
Sorry to bother you again, Bruce! Last time, I promise!

That's for the XDA app. But that and TapaTalk are so close, that I yea, it just might help at that!
I'll read it and thanks for passing it on. I appreciate it!

XDA now putting LOUD adds on the website?

Hey folks, long time user here. Thanks for the great board!
But what is the DEAL with these LOUD adds that are showing up on the board lately?
I don't mind seeing 'visual' adds. The board needs to make money somehow!
But when you start putting adds that start talking LOUD, then that is kind of annoying. Very annoying.
Wasn't sure if you were aware of this, so I figured I'd mention it. :good:
I thought I was on Android Central for a moment.
I have noticed the same thing. Started happening to me the past few days. I have also been on this board for years. Lost my old account and don't use the email address any more :/ either way it's new to me

Flipping Hyundai add just blasted my ears and wouldn't let me click to another page. Had to close the entire Chrome tab.
I'm sure XDA will fix this within a couple weeks.
But if not, I'm going to have to put an add block on my browser for this site.
I've noticed it and I had to put add blocker .......
