[Q] Question about the Autoroot method - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I understand correctly, it will do the following:
1. Root the phone
2. Install Amon_RA recovery program
3. Flash the "Sprint Lovers" ROM
So I have 2 questions.
1. Is there a way to stop it from flashing the Sprint Lovers ROM?
2. If not, will I be losing all my Apps, etc?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you are correct. That is what happens if you let autoroot run through.
I'm not sure what will happen to your phone if you don't flash a ROM after rooting takes place but I'm sure it won't be good. Probably get stuck in a boot loop. If you are thinking about rooting, your apps are gone more or less.
If you are concerned about which ROM is flashed, you can choose another ROM to flash after the root process is completed. It will prompt you. Just make sure you downloaded it prior and have it on your SD card prior to rooting.

Never used autoroot, but let it flash the sprint lovers rom; its just a default. You can flash another rom after it finishes, also you shouldn't lose any apps.

No losing apps? Are you sure? What about all of the other settings, email, contacts. Things of that nature?

I'm fairly positive, since its just like unrevoked, keeps your current rom, but rooted access.

Help with wiping/rooting.

Okay, so I'm really close to being able to do this. I just need someone to explain to me the mental block I'm having.
I'll X-post something from another thread, based on the research and reading I've done:
I am currently running the OTA 2.1 from HTC.
I want: The new rooted Froyo build.
So, steps I need to take to make this happen:
1. Backup my phone.
2. Wipe.
3. Root my phone using simpleroot
4. Reboot.
5. Flash using the file that's listed on page one of this topic, correct?
6. Reboot.
7. Flash the radio with provided file.
8. Reboot.
9. Flash the WIMAX with the provided file.
10. Reboot.
What's confusing me: How do I go from a wiped phone with no data on it to rooted via Simpleroot? Is the wipe required for Simpleroot to work, or does Simpleroot automatically give me the option to wipe while it's rooting? If I DO wipe my phone, do I use the stock installer 136img to boot my phone to the standard HTC sense screen and then root from there, or do I use Simpleroot while my phone is sitting in the recovery shell?
I'm just confused as to where to begin the Simpleroot process while wiping my phone. So confused.
For anyone who responds.... thanks. I feel like I'm so close to having this phone on a rooted Froyo, I can taste it (ha).
Lastly, if I'm not articulating this very well, and someone would like to be the king of awesome, I'd be willing to PM them my number and hopefully it wouldn't take more than a few seconds to explain to me.
Thanks.
It's really more simple than you're making it. Wiping erases data. (full wipe essentially resets the phone back to a clean rom with no user installed apps, personal data etc...).
Follow the instructions for Simpleroot (There's even a video link I believe). When that is done you should have a ROM with root access and a custom recovery. Once finished with this process, delete or rename the PC36IMG file that's on the SD card.
To Flash the other items, radio, wimax, ROM, etc.... just reboot into recovery (vol down + pwr), Choose flash from zip and select the applicable zip file. Remember to Reboot between the Radio & Wimax installs. Flash your ROM and enjoy!
Hope this helps....

Lol. Wow. As I said, it was a simple mental block. Heading home from work to try this... Thanks.
Quick question. Do I need the pc136img file before opening simpleroot?

No. Repeat to yourself as you watch the video... "it's SimpleRoot" because it's Simple. Just follow the instructions to run the program... and click "step1, step 2 as guided by the program..." It will install / run the files needed. I think the latest version may even let you click something to erase the files which are not required going fwd... just take a look at the post and the video.
Also just a heads up if you run simple root and you get an error message to the effect that you need a certain version of microsoft's .net framework. Just google it and install. This is ONLY IF YOU GET AN ERROR WHEN TRYING TO RUN SIMPLEROOT.
Wow. Thanks so much for the quick replies. ill post here later with the results.

So, unfortunately I was away from my main PC last night, and HTC's link to the HTC Sync download was inactive, therefore I couldn't download it onto my laptop to facilitate this.
One last question... do I need the clockwork recovery mod to accomplish any of this?
kperry, thanks for your help!
I was up pretty late, but I am now running a rooted Froyo!

[Q] Update to 3.70.651.1 Fails on Rooted EVO!

I have an HTC EVO with software Hardware version 003, 3.29.651.5, S-OFF and HBOOT-0.97.0000. I have tried both update files I could find for 3.70.651.1:
OTA_supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.30.651.3_releasekobxwrvtv9q86pp0.zip
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.29.651.5_releasezq9ss6wyobuo26b5.zip
Neither works as both give errors upon applying update.zip in the recovery menu. "Error 7" and "sd install error" appear with tons of other odd text which don't really form many words. What is really odd is last time my phone was rooted and the update was released I simply did the method above like normal and everything went great. Then once it was done i re-rooted! Not this time though...
I have also tried directly downloading the update to my phone via htc update and installing but I get started and it quickly goes to a frozen yellow triangle icon which then I must pull the battery. My dilemma?
I wanted to try using the file my phone downloads from htc directly but i am unable to find the file on my phone? I have searched with astro file explorer and tried every search strong possible. I searched the SD and then tried to search the main phone memory. The phone says it stores it somewhere in the memory but doesn't say where? Does anyone know where it does? I wanted to try this and see if it will update.
I am basically looking to update and I could care less about root as I can redo it after the update. The big issue is that I want my phone to stay the way it is with no deletion of ANY DATA such as messages, apps, etc... I simply want to update and re-root like I did last time and I can't figure out why it won't let me? I don't want to have to flash a new stock ROM and lose everything or have to use a backup program to do what i did so easily last time.
The new version of unrevoked 3.3 is out so I want to update and be done. Perhaps the root is causing it and can I un-root and then re-root after the update? I hate that HTC released multiple versions of the same phone as updates become extremely tricky now and dangerous. Than You for any help you can provide.
Regards,
FifthE1ement
if you are rooted then you should be using a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom to update. DO NOT do OTAs
I've seen took many people posting threads recently about trying to do the 3.70 ota and thinking they will just reroot after, they all have problems, my suggestion is to grab the radio/pri/nv/wimax update combo and flash it, then flash sprint lovers 3.70 after wiping cache and dalvik. you will still have root and all your apps with the newest software
make a backup in Ra beforehand just in case
Thanks for the quick reply's but I simply want to update like normal. If I can't get root then I can't get root but at least get me to update without overwriting my whole phone and having to make backups of EVERYTHING! Thanks...

I don't like flashing ROMs either. This will let you update.
Do a little more digging and you will find the answers. I admit it took me a little bit to find this l when I updated.
I don't understand why my phone just won't update? I don't really want to flash but thanks for the info. Does anyone know where the EVO stores the updates it downloads? If anyone could please provide me with more info that would be great.
The reason it won't update is because you have a custom recovery. You need to flash the stock recovery to allow you to update.
If you follow the link above it will let you do what you want keeping all your data and upgrading like normal. Just need to flash the stock recovery back. This is as long as you did unrevoked forever.
The downloaded updates are stored in the phones file system under /cache. You need to be able to mount your file system as rw to be able to access. If you don't know how to do that you can find both of the OTA updates on the web and download them. Have to have the correct one for the version you are currently on. The Evo's were at two different revs for this last update.
Even if you find the OTA update and try to apply it from your custom recovery it will not work.
Dig a little more and if you cannot find them I will find the links again, didn't save 'em.
Very good post and I am wondering the same thing. I haven't tried the stock recovery image thing yet but might soon. It was very easy to install the OTA update last time and then just reinstall the recovery image and superuser app. I bet it is not working because they changed the hboot in this version. I too haven't updated yet since I don't like losing my data and potentially missing something. I will probably just say screw it in a couple of weeks once I get time though and just flash the rooted version of the update.

Just flash a rooted copy of the stock ROM and only wipe the cache and dalvik. If you leave your data intact it will save all your settings.
I've been updating this way since I rooted about a month after the phone came out.

1. Download a Rooted 3.70 Stock Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251)
2. Copy Downloaded rom to your SDCard
3. Reboot to Recovery
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik-Cache
6. Flash the Zip you copied to your SDCard
7. Reboot
8. Done
Do Not Wipe Data, or you will lose what you are trying to keep.
I'm just curious. The 3.70.651.1 update you were trying to use. Where did you try to DL it from. I think you were using the wrong file.
If you are rooted you should have tried to use these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
For some reason teshx set that ROM up to wipe data.. you'll have to open the zip and change it.
look in it for meta-inf\com\google\android\update-script file and open that, at the top you will see it say "format DATA:". Just delete that, save, zip and flash.
Why that is set up like that I have no idea
sekigah84 I got it from Sprint via my phone. So it had to be right.
Khilbron & xHausx thanks for the info I'm going to take my nandroid backup and give this a try! I'll post back my info! Also will this update my radios, and other pertinent system files?
damn man you really like your phone stock, and i guess you dont have time to read all 9 stickys helping root people, so we'll just need to fill you in
the bottom line: flash a custom rom and you will never want to go back. NEVER OTA WITH ROOT OR YOU COULD GET SCREWED BADLY. even a stock-ish custom rom like mikfroyo is better than stock. titanium backup will backup all apk's and data. or you can just not wipe data.
flash myns.
just do it
you wont regret it
or just stick with stock.

Please help a noob root

Hey guys I have been reading about this for the last 3 hours or so and I just want to make sure I have everything figured out before I start this practice. Please check over what I have lined up and let me know if you have any recommendations.
Phone Info:
HBoot 2.10
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel 2.6.32.17
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
I read this article first:

From there I decided that Universal Auto Root was the best choice for me. Is this correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I am currently downloading the RUU and AutoRoot v2.0 as suggested by the instructions on the thread above. The part that is tripping me up is what to do about a ROM. From what I can tell the AutoRoot puts on the Sprint Lovers ROM. I have a fair amount of experience with ADW and LP so I'm not set on using the Sense UI. However if I do use Sense I think I would like to use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026 It seems to be Sense minus the bull****. I don't know how to use AutoRoot with a different ROM. If anyone could help me there that would be amazing!
Also, if anyone recommends rooting a different way or using a different ROM please let me know or if someone can link me to go instructions about flashing ROMs etc.
Thank you and I apologize for asking something that has probably already been asked. I am just trying to get the most updated responses to ensure this goes well.

Yes. Make sure that HTC sync is not installed!!! and just used unrevoke forever and have HBOOT drivers installed Prier to rooting. GOOD LUCK
How do I get the HBOOT drivers installed? So nothing to do with unrevoked3? Should I format my SD card beforehand just to be safe as well? Sorry for so many questions.

Ok well I never moved the unrevoked-forever.zip to my SD Card. Was I supposed to? Unrevoked3 flash tool or whatever ran and now my phone reads S-Off which is the goal. Now what do I do? Should I do the backups suggested here (RSA keys and nandroid)? Should I try to flash a ROM? Any suggested ROMs? How do I go about flashing a ROM? Move it to SD Card and go into recovery but then what?
Don't put unrevoke on your sd card. You have to do it on your PC. PLEASE MAKE A NANDROID!!! I CAN STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!! As far as Rom's try Myn's, is the best Rom right now.

If you have S-OFF you are rooted, now you just need to decide if you want to use a custom ROM or keep the stock one.
i'm not sure you absolutely get rooting. once you are rooted, you can SWITCH roms easily and safely. but, in order to do this, you need to install a custom recovery and a rooted rom. in the earlier days, devs would compile rooted roms from scratch, but sprint lovers is just a rooted rom with minor improvements. just root and then change roms.
Alright I rooted it successfully, flashed a ROM successfully, and then tried it out. Now I would like to try another one. I put the new ROM on the SDCard and now I am wondering what I have to wipe in clockwork recovery. I went into recovery and I have wiped cache partition, wiped data/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache. Now do I just go ahead and "install zip from sdcard"?
Yes, going from ROM to ROM wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik and flash as normal. Should be good.
Always make backups. I advise you to change your Recovery to Amon Ra's. This will allow you to make backups of your "RSA Keys." This is important for 4G / WiMax.
Once you've changed recoveries, should you even choose to (don't HAVE to), make a backup with that one. Backups from Clockwork will not work with Amon's recovery, from what I've heard. Maybe there is a way from last I heard, but not sure. So when that's done, you can put those clockwork backups on your computer or delete them. Only after making sure you're sitting fine.
Either way, establish backups (I have a stock rooted backup, confirmed working CURRENT ROM as well as taking one before doing something drastic. JIC ) and then start flashing. Try to enjoy yourself.
edit: toss those backups somewhere safe IE computer / ext hdd etc

Hey guy also a bit of a noob here when it comes to the Evo, I rooted my incredible and it worked fine but I am worried a bit more about this phone cause its a work phone. First I was wondering does 4g work with any of the custom roms? I see that Cryogen just came out with an asop rom that seems to work with 4g but I am wondering do the sense based roms work with 4g? Also I see something about wimax keys what are they and what happens if I lose them.

4g works with all ota-based roms (minus the serious exeptions of course). rsa keys are the acutal keys that say "this phone is authorized to use the sprint 4g network". they are matched with hardware, so if you lose them, you cant ever get them back. even sprint cant. the easiest way to prevent this is to not use clockworkmod (i think its safe now) and to back up your keys. niether of these are very hard.
Ok thanks so I just use unrevoked to root the phone and then do a first time nandroid backup and I should be good to go? Then I can do S-off if I want?
Also how hard right now is it to put the phone back to stock if something strange should happen? Want to make sure I get to use my 7 buck a month insurance if I have something go wrong with the phone.

[Q] Rooting questions

I am a complete noob when it comes to this stuff, I appreciate any answers to my questions before I take the plunge. I just bought a Toshiba Thrive 3.1 tablet and want to use my EVO 4G as a hotspot when I am outside of a WiFi covered area. I have researched on the unrEVOked method of rooting my EVO (although it seems I cannot use that method at the moment because it is not compatible with the latest 4.24.651.1 OTA) and from what I've translated it is that it does not wipe your data in the rooting process and installs the ClockworkMod recovery onto the device.
My questions are: firstly, is there another method just as simple as the unrEVOked way to root the device and not wipe data?
Secondly, I only want to root the device and keep the stock ROM, would I be able to delete bloatware (such as the Blockbuster app) from the device just by rooting it or will I have to flash a customized stock ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379)?
Thirdly, tying into the second question, if I have to flash a custom stock ROM onto the device (namely, this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379), it says no data wipe is required to flash that ROM if coming from a stock ROM. So do I basically place that file onto the root of my SD card and go through the flash process at boot?

There are several root methods available. Simple Root comes to mind. Unrevoked, however, is arguably the most used. Rooting basically removes your device's security and places a custom recovery on it. Nothing more so it does not affect your data.
Secondly, I only want to root the device and keep the stock ROM, would I be able to delete bloatware (such as the Blockbuster app) from the device just by rooting it or will I have to flash a customized stock ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379)?

Yes, once your device is rooted, you will be able to uninstalled various items from your device. I suggest you initially download and install the Titanium Backup Pro app because it will display almost everything on your device and allows you to 'freeze' anything you do not want. Freezing will prevent the item from running and will save you from the headaches of having deleted or uninstalled something your device needs. If you find that an item is needed or that freezing it causes an ill-effect, you can always 'defrost' it. That way, you can learn what is necessary and what is not before you actually remove the items permanently. I hope that made sense.
Thirdly, tying into the second question, if I have to flash a custom stock ROM onto the device (namely, this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379), it says no data wipe is required to flash that ROM if coming from a stock ROM. As soon as you finish rooting your device, the VERY FIRST THING you should do is immediately make a nandroid backup of your current setup. By doing so, you can always return your device to the way it was prior to flashing any custom rom, mod, kernel, theme, etc. I suggest you make a nandroid backup every time you make significant changes to your device. Secondly, when you change roms, it is highly recommended that you wipe everything except the SD card before flashing the custom rom. This will prevent anything from the old to possibly interfere with the new, so to speak. Having said that, prior to flashing a rom always verify that the rom you are flashing is intended for the device you're flashing it to. Too many people have flashed a rom for the Droid Incredible or a different device and flashed it onto an EVO 4G and have seriously screwed themselves. After that, always wipe cache, dalvik, data, system, boot, & anything else in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card and then flash the rom. Depending on your recovery, the rom zip does not have to be on the root of your SD card.

Thank you so much for your detailed answers. Yes, I am aware there aren't any jailbreaks made up for the newest OTA yet and I wish I researched that before I blindly jumped onto the Gingerbread bandwagon. I guess I'll have to wait for something to come out here but thanks to your answers I can finally take the plunge into rooting without any doubts in the back of my head.

Also, this may be a stupid question, but looking at the wiki's and seeing all these files for kernels and radio's and what nots gets confusing. Generally, will these all be included in the ROM file of my choosing, or do I have to hunt down compatible kernels, etc. for the ROM and device?

A kernel will come with every rom you flash, but for the most part, you will have the option to flash a different kernel as long as it's made for your specific device. Also, kernels made for Sense based roms are not compatible with AOSP roms and vice versa.

[Q] Rooting

What's the easiest way to Root my EVO 4g? I would like to put on a ROM that allows me to tether.
Depends are you on 2.3 gingerbread or 2.2 froyo?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm running 2.3.3 on my EVO

It's the only root method that will work for 2.3.3. There are different links and tutorials, but the method is the same.
Thanks...This is might be a dumb question but do I need to back everything up before I root the phone? Will I lose everything (setting, apps etc)

You'll only lose everything if you flash a new ROM. Rooting Android only unlocks the bootloader and thus allows you to flash customized versions of the recovery, ROM, kernel, etc.
See the guide in my signature. I wrote it so it is absolutely noob-proof, every step is explained in detail. Rooting through backups and flashing and setup. You can always PM me or post questions in here and I will reply as soon as I can
oh, ok...So, just to be clear...I plan on rooting my phone and installing a custom kernal that allows for wifi tethering and a superuser function. Theses to things will not affect the data on my phone?
Also, when an update (ie ICS) comes out will I have to unroot my phone to install it?
And one more thing...Is this the only way to tether? I'd be ok with wired tethering

What exactly do you mean by data on your phone? Apps and stuff? Or something else?
If you are in my guide, here is what you need to do:
Do all of post one.
Download flashable superuser from here
You should still be in recovery mode.
Plug up phone to your computer. Select "Mount as MS" in main menu of recovery.
Your computer should pop up with "Removable Disk".
Move the Superuser zip to your phone.
Unmount once transfer is done.
Return to the main screen of recovery. Navigate to Wipe.
Select cache, it will wipe.
Select dalvik, it will wipe.
Return to main screen of recovery. Go to "Flash zip from sdcard".
Find the Superuser file and select it with power button.
Reboot.
You now have root privileges!
I think you said you wanted a custom kernel. See post 4 and follow everything in there. Follow these directions:
Let's assume you already have a ROM on your phone. How to flash:
Download the kernel you want, then transfer it to your phone in disk drive like we talked about earlier.
Boot into recovery.
Wipe cache and dalvik in Wipe menu. Twice.
Navigate to "Mounts" menu. Mount everything except for SDext.
Navigate to Flash zips from sdcard and find the kernel zip. Select with power button.
Reboot and enjoy!
Note, the stock hotspot is not "hacked", so you won't be able to use it. Go to Market and download Wireless Tether.
Whenever you want to flash custom ROMs and more, come see my guide for any help you need or feel free and PM me
Everything I described, you would not lose anything on your phone.
Never unroot except to take your phone to Sprint for repairs. Don't unroot for an update. Back when Gingerbread came out, a large number of people unrooted for it. They got stuck with a bootloader that could not be cracked for several months.

If you have unlimited data, then you're fine. The roms have hacked hotspots that you can use, or use wireless tether. The evo most likely won't get an offical ICS update; you'd backup your rom, and flash the custom ics rom. You can use wifi or wired tether.

Custom kernels will not affect your user data. However, if you choose to install mods like viperMOD and V6 Supercharger in the future, installing a different kernel will clear these settings.
As far as I know, the only way to get updates would be to flash either a rooted version of the official update, or flash a custom ROM, such as CM7, which updates regularly with the latest version.
