i couldn't find a definitive answer for this, so I'm throwing my question out there:
I just moved to Starburst 1.3.3.4 from LeeDroid 2.3d, and now I find that Starburst, despite having Chinese language support, lacks the Chinese toggle that the stock HTC keyboard had (w/ LeeDroid had too).
Does anyone know how to put in the Chi language toggle? I've tried downloading Google's IME, and although it installed, nothing changed.
You have to change the input since you installed a new keyboard. Open up the keyboard in sms or something and in a text field, right click, well press down for few seconds and menu will pop up, select input method and change it.
Accidental discovery of solution

Yep, stumbled onto this solution when my finger strayed a second too long into the SMS text box. Whaddaya know, voila! --input method came up, and the keyboard with Google IME I installed showed up.
Thanks anyway, appreciate your dropping by to assist.

My on-screen keyboard is only displaying numbers, with no option to switch to qwerty. The only qwerty characters available are "p" and "w", which appear to the top right of the keyboard.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get the normal qwerty keyboard back??

Did you disable eT9 and to get Auto suggest and auto complete back? If so that is probably what did it.
I had the same problem when I hacked my Tilt 2 to get get auto suggest and auto complete back. Apparently when you do this it works fine until the fallowing happens:
A. You get to a field that triggers you keyboard to switch number entry mode (Nummber pad with P and W)
b. You get to a field that trigger the keyboard to internet entry mode (Keyboard with ".com" and "/" but no spacebar).
Once you enter either mode you can't key you regular keyboard back.
If that is what happened to you, your not the only one.

I haven;t found a way to make it work without breaking the keyboard. I had to do a clear storage and learn to use T9. It better than a broken keyboard.
Yes that's what I did. If I have auto-suggest but NOT auto-complete on do you know if this will avoid the problem??

I'm not really sure. I tried several ways and nothing worked, my guess is your are likely to still have an issue. BTW going back an changeing the registry edits back did not fix the issues for me. I had to clear storage and start from scratch each time.
For now I'm learning to live with XT9. I don't like it as much as the original, but it is usable. The alternative is using MS tiny little SW keyboard, and to me, that is even worse.
Now if someone could figure out how to keep the alternate keyboards from popping up, in theory, that should remedy the issue. Unfortunately, I have no such skill.

Try this to fix it: start Opera, tap the url field, which will bring up the "search the web" field. Then tap the "search the web" field. This should fix your keyboard (at least it works for me), at least until the next time something triggers the keyboard problem.

Thanks for the input, good to know.
That may be a work around for the Internet input issue (maybe), but we still have the issue with the numeric input Keyboard. Thus far the best option, at least for me, is to live with XT9 until a terminate fix is found.
On the bright side, over all I love my TP2/Tilt2!

Actually, this works for the numeric input keyboard issue as well - I have experienced this first hand. addmittedly, it is a bit of a pain to switch from whatever you happen to be doing, to opera, just to fix your keyboard.
I'm using a swedish version of desire-z and sometimes (too often) the phone decides that i'm trying to write capital letters when i'm using the swedish letters Å Ä and Ö. This even happens in the middle of words and the only way to type small letters is by using the software kwyboard. The shift button does nothing.
This is really starting to bug me! Does anyone have a solution?
If so please let me know.
Thanks!

I think those letters can only be used in upper case with the keyboard. There is some info in the dev section.

That is not true. I have the nordic version myself, but I am not experiencing the same issue as lugiber Mine works both in upper case at the beginning of words, and in the middle of a text in lower case
Edit: Lugiber: Does it happen with all the extra letters, or just some of them?
Yes, my mistake. I have re-read the thread in the dev section myself.
Looks like it is a bug at the moment, but shutting and re-opening the keyboard helps??

Ah, didn't know that opening and closing the hardware keyboard fixed the issue. Thanks for the tip! It's still annoying that i have to do this just for the simplest functionality on my phone! Hope the fix will come soon.
(Btw if someone is thinking of buying swiftkey don't do it until a fix has been released becase it will cause åä and ö to constantly be capital letters.)
Crap! I really love this phone, too bad htc didn't have sense enough to beta test the phone enough before the release.
But if they did i guess the wait would have been even longer. And that wouldn't have been fun!

I had the same problem with my DZ in the beginning, and traced the problem down to language selection of the keyboard!
Try to slide out the keyboard and watch two letters pop up in the notification bar - for mine it was EN, and figurated out that it was set to english! After I changed it to Danish, the problem went away! Soo kool...

I noticed that the first day I used the DZ, and changed it... maybe thats why I havent experienced the same problem as TS
Strange - I have a nordic Z also and my danish letters is upper case also sometimes..
I have set my keyboard to danish and T9 (guessing words..).
Either we need to play around more with the language settings or there is a bug...
Hmm, strange. I have set my keyboard to swedish and still experience the issue. Hope there is a bug fix for this soon. I don't want to wear out my keyboard hinges just yet.

One solution is select STOCK virtual QWERTY as default input method. That way the bug goes away. Installing any 3rd party virtual keyboard will cause the bug.

Anja
works on touch
mine works fine if i use the default "Touch input" keyboard, but doesn't work on any other keyboard i have tried. So far only tested "Scandinavian keyboard" and "Smart Keyboard pro".
The fact that it does work consistently (without having to open/close the hardware keyboard) with the default keyboard but not in any other, makes me think that the keyboard sends the code for a capital letter and probably sends some correction info along that the default keyboard listens to but the others ignore... just my guess, i really have no experience with how the keyboards work in android...
I have investigated this CAPS nordic problem too. I have found few ways to generate the situation. It appears to generate caps when you haven't activated textfield by tapping it. For example when you write two sms messages in a row. At the first message you tap the textfield to active it and write the message. After sending the first message the text field is allready "active" (cursor blinking there). And if you start to write immediately without closing keyboard or tapping text field it generates only capital nordic letters. Then if you tap the textfield to really activate it again then the capital nordic letters are gone.
I'm not sure if this is the only problem with this CAPS thing but that is easy way to generate it. I think there might be few other situations where CAPS problem exists because sometimes pressing menu -key twice (open and close menu) caps problem disappears but sometimes not. Then sometimes it disappears when closing and opening the keyboard sometimes not. Best results I have had with tapping text field from screen to activate it.
I have informed HTC Support for this matter but all I have got back is: Hard reset your device. I have once done that but it doesn't help either.

My experience is slighty different from this one.. But if i write a SMS with HW keyboard, send it and exit the sms thread iam in and go to a new one and write there, the cap letters will be there.. This is if i use the HW keyboard during this .. If i then close the HW keyboard and pull it out again they are gone!

I think it is the same situation. When you don't close the HW keyboard and you go to writing text without activating text box by tapping screen you get capital nordic letters.
I got reply from HTC Support from England that they are not aware of that problem (after few replys where I explained the situation) and they gave me Norwegian support phone number, but because of costs to phone there I'll asked if they could give me an email address. Plus I can then get some documentation about what have been discussed even if support person changes. I hope we soon get official fix for this.
I've had the phone for about a month now and I didn't have the problem until recently. The Swype word choice box comes up even when I'm single tapping the letters. I tried turning off the word choice menu settings but it still pops up. Did I press something? Cuz I like it when I swype but if I want to speak in my native language I don't want it poping up and switching my words. Thank you.
Sounds like you've got "word prediction" turned on in swype settings.

When I am trying to write a message or e-mail with my language (Greek in this case) when pressing on the natural keyboard the S or the G it thinks that I am pressing the shortcut buttons, but I am in the text area trying to write..
Every other letters are fine except those which are shortcuts.
So everytime I press S for example, it goes me back to messages. And G goes me to Gmail. (And something else I don't know which shortcut is that goes to browser.. anyway.)
If I switch to English from Settings it's all fine.
It's a bug, or a configuration some where I don't even know and I can change it?
(searching menus all day...)
Not on cm7 or a normal android rom right now so I couldn't tell u the exact setting (different on each ROM) but what you're looking for here is "quick launch buttons" or "quick launch keys" and clear them all.

Is there voice input apart from S Voice? I have tried a couple of other keyboards (including, of course the Google keyboard) and there is no mic icon to be found. I have scoured the menus, including the developers menu, finding nothing that would enable voice input or voice typing. Really perplexing and frustrating omission of a feature. I am running rooted and stock. Any ideas how/if it can be done? Thanx.
Samsung Keyboard has the Samsung Voice
Swype has it's Dragon key for voice input
You can also Select while typing Google Voice Input (not really a button but it is not really a keyboard either).
sorry, I don't understand...

Are you saying there is a way to get voice input? I do not know what the dragon key is. ?? I do not understand your last comment either. Sorry if I sound like a doof or something. I am fairly adept at setting up these phones but this issue just eludes me. Could you explain it to me like I was a 4 year old?

Yes.
You can select whatever keyboard you have loaded by selecting the keyboad symbol when you swipe down from the top.
Four Images...
1) Samsung Standard keyboard has a mic button
2) If you load Swype, they have what they call Dragon Talk which is the flame looking key on the right.
3) If when selecting input device (The keyboard at the top) and select Google Voice Type, you get
4) which is ready to listen to your text. It's not really a keyboard but can be used regardless of what keyboard you have selected.
Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to reply with attachments. I just downloaded Swype/Dragon and surprisingly the voice input works! However I still have no 'mic' button in Samsung or Google keyboards. Strange. Any ideas? I am happy to use the Swype but I would like to figure why that feature is not working in the other two keyboards.

make sure voice typing is selected in language and inputs under your settings.
on your keyboard if you have a 3rd party keybard to the left of the keyboards space bar (the one with the 3 lil dots on it) hold the button down until the button shows more options. One of them is the mic. the button will default to whatever that last selection is.
I get what you're saying...
The problem is there is no selection in settings to activate voice typing. Also on the Samsung keyboard, pressing the button to the left of the space bar only yields the options shown in the screen shots below. Again thanks for your input and assistance.

Yep, that did it. Thank you. Pretty lame that this isn't a feature of the OS itself, but hey we're talking Google... Thank so much to all who have contributed to the solution.
