Odin help - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am wanting to step into the realm of rooting and flashing but am a little nervous. I read about using Odin to go back to stock if anything goes wrong but when I try the link on Wiki it says the page is not there. I am trying to make sure I have all the tools ready just in case. Any help?

Check the dev forums stickies at the top and click on:
[How To] Return to stock / Fix bricked Epic
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

Here's a link to make it so easy a caveman could do it:
Click Me!
In the future use the Search button in the upper right.

That is the link I have been trying but when I click it it takes me to a page saying
"ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND
Oops! Looks like the page you're looking for was moved or never existed.
Make sure you typed the correct URL or followed a valid link."

Working fine for me on multiple computers and my Epic.

I get the same error when trying to download the Odin3.rar

Sounds like a problem on your end then.
We need info like:
Browser
OS
etc.
Then maybe we can help.

Here is the link that is not working.
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/Odin3epic.rar
I tried it at home(Windows Vista, Mozilla Firefox 3.6 and IE 8.0) and on my epic(Midnight Rom 4.2 standard browser)and neither work.
I think the link is dead.

You are all correct, the download link is down.
I will upload my Odin file here. Then follow the rest of the directions in the pervious link mentioned.

[TEMP] [FIX] Charging phone with phone off.

resolved. Close thread
Shaquiel Harris said:
Thanks to tnpapadakos for the info. to fix the charging phone with phone off auto boot to recovery issue all we have to do is use the 2.5.1.4 recovery. then you could always flash back to the latest clockwork recovery when you dont need this one anymore but can go back to the other one when you wanna charge with the phone off.
You could either flash it or put it in your sdcard in clockworkMOD/download/mirror.kanged.net/recoveries for easier access to flash from Rom manager. Make sure its named recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.4-vision once its there when you go to ROM managerr and go to all clockwork recoveries, you can flash that recovery without getting an Error! or rename it to recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision and flash it through that option.
Now does anyone still have that recovery? We can't get it from the ROM manager because you will get an ERROR. if anyone has it, post it here and ill add it here for everyone to get.

I looked in the first page.. there is no such fix about fixing the phone booting into clockwork recovery when you turn off the phone. I'd lovea link to the page in that thread were you posted the fix.
edit: OP here is the recovery you were looking for 2.5.1.3 correct?

And yes, this thread is an absolute waste of space as this fix has been around for quite some time now....

You led to me links on the first page of an ancient thread that have no use because they dont work. and the first link only leads you to download the latest recovery. But here's the best part, your link you had in that thread doesn't work anymore. How cool are you?

While you would rather be right. We would rather be happy.
Also... what good does it do you to give you what you want? It's more helpful if we show you how to get there instead... teach a man to fish, right? So how about you stop expecting (and demanding), and instead learn a little... it won't kill you to read through a thread (I'm still here, aren't I?)... instant gratification just shows how arrogant you are.
As for the broken link? There are numerous posts about a mirror being made by someone... how about you click "search" one more time?

damien667 said:
Its not a kernel patch, its a init.rc service than runs before recovery that reads the kernel command line for the offmode_charging variable... if it sees it it stops recovery from starting (even though you are in fact already booted into the recovery system) and starts a keypressing service (to reboot phone into regular boot mode when power button is pressed) and also the battery charging service that is supposed to display the battery icon charging animation (which doesn't work in cwm)... those services (binaries) were grabbed from the OTA recovery... if you read my previous posts, you would know.

How to take apart a NAND backup

I had the Cm7 gx4 rom not too long ago, and it had a really cool wallpaper that I used, and I'd like to have again. Off topic for a second, it was a white honeycomb pattern.
Anyways, I've tried going through the zip file for the wallpapers, even went through RC1 and RC2 to find it. Then tried opening the ADW zip within those roms and trying to find it there. I have an old nandroid backup from when I had that rom, and I was wondering how would one go about opening up the nand and extracting files? all that comes up when I open it at IMG files. Is it possible to navigate through it like a zip file?

Yeah. I did a search and all (as I stated in my post), but I must not have searched the perfect keywords. XDA search seems finicky.
And I hope you didn't get the wrong idea from my post. I wasn't trying to say that you, specifically, should have helped me. It was more out of frustration with the fact that no one at all replied, and the fact that there actually was a perfect thread that I couldn't find.
Anyway, thank you for finally opening my eyes, and I will hit the thanks button for you when I get on a computer instead of the app.
I got those img files extracted by using dsixda's kitchen; rename those nand imgs as boot.img, and use kitchen function #22 to extract them.
Was this the answer you were looking for?

Figures. Well, I guess I just posted mine at the wrong time. The Q&A section moves fast.

Brand new with lots of rooting woes

Hey folks, just got my epic 4g two days ago. been trying to root it since then. the battery life is terrible on the stock ROM and i want something that allows me to use my phone without worry about draining all the power. I cant seem to root it though. i tried this one click root;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
but it says the phone is not connected. so installed drivers, tried a different cable and nothing has helped. what can i do? also, if someone could just lay out how you flash a new ROM and such. i havent seen a FAQ or anything that clearly outlines the process and im very confused.
thank you!!
You need:
1. A USB cable other than the stock one, it's a POS
2. Switch USB ports if one doesn't work, use one in the back if it's a desktop
3. Restart Computer/Epic if it still doesn't work
tried all of that, and ever port on my computer. no luck.

Easiest thing rather than struggling with one click is to Odin in a prerooted ROM like here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
And more info on Odin is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Once you get rooted, find the ROM you like, read the OP thoroughly. The instructions for each ROM are similiar but not the same.
Check out these how to videos in the general section....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009997
Everything you ever wanted or needed to know about your epic and don't thank me, thank qbking77.

If you've finally successfully rooted, then you've done the hardest part. From here on out please make an effort to browse and search the forum, or GOOGLE search your question with "XDA" in the search bar. Everything you have asked up until now I can easily find answered 10 times on this forum.
There are many of us here that are happy to take the time to help you get the most out of your Epic and try and answer your questions, but we get very tired of constantly answering the same questions.
It's time to wean you.
To put you on the right path though, I will answer you. This is a rooted STOCK rom you have now. No adjustments except the freedom to adjust it yourself. You want a custom rom to flash over that, such as Bonsai, Midnight, or Syndicate Rom Frozen, which I will not link you to .

[Q] GT18160 Jelly Bean 4.1.2

I would appreciate some guidance as to what rom to install.
This UK version of the phone had become increasingly slow. I have just rooted it but do not know what to do next.
I had intended to install a custom rom and see it rejuvinated, especially for things like Sat Nav. I also want to get rid of some of the Samsung software that is taking up memory space and slowing the phone down. She I try to update the software to KitKat before installing a custom rom?

I find the 101 pages to the help topic overwhelming, especially as it is solidly highly technical. Do you happen to know of a step by step set of instructions that I can follow with ease.
Sorry but some basic points I need clarifying:
You referred me to a rom that works great for you and yet suggest that a custom kernel will improve performance. How do I decide which one to go for? At heart I do not understand the difference between the two.
I had a look at the codina link and notice I need to know what file system is being run on my Ace 2. I tried gparted on my desktop and it did not pickup the android phone as a drive. How do I work out what drive format is being used?

I use both. So, in my case, I install the ROM first, and then I install the kernel (instructions above). Note that the kernel part is optional, but should give you better experience.

You could check this by using adb. But if you never did anything before, than it is most likely to be ext4 (default for our Ace2).
Thank you for your help. I have just gone to get the temp. cwm.6028 (http://d-h.st/oZD) and it keeps failing to download. Is the link working? Do you have another one?
I notice that there are two download buttons. The plain download button causes a warning that I am going to a web forgery. The download now button fails to download for me.

For some reason (newest) FireFox downloads it but deletes it right away... This file is save! Use another browser (Chrome for instance) to download... De-activate Download Manager and use Download Now button... Not the other one...
I downloaded it using Flareget and sent it to my desktop and that worked as a download. The downloaded file is called update.zip. Your reply in the last message suggested to me that it should be called "temp. cwm.6028" (http://d-h.st/oZD). I ask in case someone has substituted another file!

It goes direct to recovery. Tried wipe cache and all. What to do?
I would try the following:
Once in recovery, go to "POWER OFF" select it.
Let it sit for about 2 mins. Reboot to download mode. Flash the update.
Let it reboot and do its stuff. If it still fails, then a hard reset is in store for you. If that still fails, well, hopefully it doesn't.

Make sure the MD5 matches, and re-flash again. Something didn't get installed properly this is why you need to flash it again, but from a fully powered down state.

Sammobile firmwares are outdated and likely your problem. Go over to our General section and download the firmware from Koop1955s Guides & Links thread. Flash it and report back.

Koop gets his files from Sammobile. I don't know why you said they are outdated and the problem. They are usually the #1 recommended go to site for firmwares. Koop just reups them to a much faster host for the rest of us. (Which I thank him greatly for!)
The only thing wrong with the OPs file could be things like missing pieces, corrupt download, etc. Either way, getting a fresh file from koop's links is probably the best option due to the faster more reliable download servers. So thank you for sharing the link for the OP.

Well apparently your Sammobile differs from yours, because there isn't any current software aside from PB6.. good day.

You don't need to get all hostile man. Look at the pic. It clearly states the latest version on Sammobile.com's website.
Here's the link, but download speed is an atrocity: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G920P/
@elesbb and @Saafir, can't we all just get along?
Actually, I do use Sammobile but I also use the Samsung-firmware.org site as well. Sometimes it is slightly ahead of Sammmobile, but not always. https://samsung-firmware.org/model/SM-G920P/
There are TWO problems with Sammobile. The obvious one is the really slow speeds. The second, and not obvious unless you check, is getting a false result that the download has completed. Happened to me the last time. I was about to post, but then I noticed that the PI3 was smaller than the previous version. Had to re-download and got it complete the second go-round.
The other reason that I post to AFH is that you always get an MD5 to check. I know that we experienced folk check those, but less experienced users don't always check. And Sammobile doesn't show the MD5, so...

I make a lot of on the fly replies. It wasn't intended to be "hostile" at all. My apologies to elesbb
