[Q] Downgrading Rom Failed - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, just got my desire HD and I thought that I'd try to unlock it's power by installing a custom ROM. I was following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954997 cause I have a Telus Desire HD. However, when I entered /data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.31.405.3 I got "backup failed" or something.
I decided to continue, anyways, with flashing the PD98IMG. But, at the end of the flashing it says "Main version is older, update failed!" Any ideas what I've been doing wrong?
Thanks!

You have to start the process again, and this time use "charge only" connection mode. The problem might also be some app that mounts your SD card when you connect your phone to a PC (for example winamp does this).

Wait, nevermind. I think I failed in making the goldcard because I restarted from scratch and so far it's working properly =D
Sorry for already spamming the forums with my first post xD
Yeah, I converted it to Charge Only too this time. Maybe it was a combination of both things that fixed it! Thanks! =]
When should I have charge only and when should I mount the SD card? Right now I'm pushing su (I'm guessing super user). Does that mean I should have the SD card mounted? It's saying device is not found so I'm a little confused by that

Anyone have any advice? =D
I enter: push su /sdcard/su
And it says: error: device not found

ADB drivers installed correctly? Charge only mode? USB debugging on?

Cant root Desire

Ok Guys heres what I,e got
Firmware ver 2.1-updat 1
Baseband ver 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernal ver 2.6.29-b7e82785
Build Num 1.19.707.7 CL171460 release keys
Software num 1.19.707.7
Browser ver Webkit3.1
Ok. now I,ve spent probably about 24 hours during the past three days trying to root the thing. made a gold card after about 10 attempts, have tried and tried to root the thing, have tried 3 or 4 different methods, most fail becase either I loose USB connection to the fone when navigating to Bootloader. From there on in she all over rover. Actually I,m not sure I have the right ROM to add to the fone, but I,d really like to get to the point where it asks for the rom. I,ve aged about 10 years since embarking on this venture, and still the thing is as bought. The phone isnt branded, bought it thru ebay from Hong Knog I think, has asian english which aint no fun. Have loaded Morelocal2 on but it still aint nice.
Can someone who has rooted one of these with similar ver software email me whith there secrets please before I go totally insane or really root the thing against a brick wall.
Cheers Guys.
Try the tutorial in my sig (second link). You should have no problems rooting with that.
It provides you with the required downloads for rooting. Just download and flash your ROM of choice in place if the 'rootedupdate.zip' file.
Please state any errors you recieve while attempting root.

I,ve tried your link, now my wife has been helping me, she cant get it to install either, I,ve even got to the stage of watching in Device manager what happens when it goes into Bootloader/recovery mode. the link between the HTC and the computer breaks,SOOOOOOO as I,ve stated before I have a very good understanding on HOW to root the thing, its just that for some reason I cant keep the phone connected thru the USB . I think this is the only prob I have. Something else that also happens is I get a Customer ID failed message half way thru step 1
What ever system I try to use to root this thig thats where I end up.
Wifie is going to try one more time, this time we are going to try the fone with a default startup to look at the disc not the HTC Syn.
Please keep trying to help guys

OK Heres the wifie update,
Screen says,

error: device not found
error: device not found
Now wipe and apply rootupdate.zip from the recovery image menu.

So there we go guys, thats it in a nut shell
Try using the TinyCore method, I had all sorts of issues in Windows but this worked first time...see this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710081&postcount=2
obviously download the right Live CD for your bootloader
Also if you are trying to root in windows, make sure you have HTC Sync installed.
Desire root
Yep, I,m using the tiny core app followed the instructions in the link as advised. Still loses connection at bootlader/recovery
When you get back to Bootloader, how long do you wait before trying to run? As I normally leave it 5 or so seconds and then it's fine...if you do it too quick it'll say no device found
Which TinyCore CD did you download? I'm assuming you have HBOOT 0.80 on your device before you started?
Rooting a desire
An answer to your question, I,m using the tcl_r4_desire_hb80 file. when you ask how long are you waiting , I reckon it taks me more than 5 seconds to type in sudo ./step2.sh
I could try it again and wait longer.
Desire a rooted phone
Nope sorry guys, I,ve tried god dam everything, still wont connect afetr step 1 with tcl_r4_desire_hb80.
Somehow I need to be able to force a usb connection.
hey I tried this on Vista and XP, thought XP might be better. is there a stand alone app to force USB drivers when tcl_r4_desire_hb80 boots into termial screen
If you have done step 1, is it possible after failed attempts at getting into the recovery, you have usb bricked it?
Try switching it on normally and see if you have normal usb connectivity, and the sd card mounts and works fine?

I too was thinking that there is a possibility of his device being bricked, especially when receiving errors indicating that the device cannot be found in recovery.
Rooting desire
OK, wondered that myself,
connected phone to PC, sync straight away with fone
reconnected it to pc in disk drive mode and connected, checked in My Computer and the disc drive was there with all my files.
Suppose that means everything there is ok to
OK if it isn't usb bricked then it's got to be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to follow the tutorial in the dev section and use tiny core linux.
Rooting desire
OK guys,,, so heres where I,m at, so far all info gained from you lovely people has been to no avail.
What I,m getting is this
In device manager I am watching what happens when the Desire goes from fastboot to bootloader. In bootloader I get "Android 1.0 with the yellow tiangle indicating it aint set up with drivers. In fastboot I get "My HTC" under Android USB Devices. now in either Bootloader or fastboot I,m only getting one or the other, and as I said, the triangle under "Android 1.0"
Now Ive gone to Android 1.0 and tried to add a driver, seemingly thers not a driver in the world that will work with Android 1.0. All driver in my Sdk dont work. The driver installer asks for a driver but wont except anything trown at it.
First, via your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development and ensure the USB Debugging option is selected.
Try a different USB port.
I actually think you need to create a Gold Card even though you have stock rom 1.19.707.7
Try the Gold Card.

I have the exact same issue on win.7 64bit.
Try ignoring the no android 1.0 issue, continue to put your phone into recovery with the volume down and power buttons. Wait about 10 seconds after you see the black screen with red triangle, and then click on recovery windows.bat. Works for me everytime.
Windows takes it's time to see and install devices so it may be that you are trying things too quickly after connecting the usb lead.

[Q] Another ADB push problem, can't even get temp root

Hi guys,
I'm no stranger to rooting and installing ROMs, but doing so with ADB is completely new to me. I just got a G2 at the beginning of January, upgrading from a G1.
I spent about two hours trying to get the Android SDK and ADB working properly on my computer. Now ADB can see my phone, but when I try to do the first part of the temp root process from the wiki:
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
I get a permission denied error. I'm not supposed to be getting this, right? The gfree_temp-root.zip files are extracted to the folder where ADB is, and I can see in the prompt that ADB is trying to work, but I always get this error, and I don't want to continue until I know what's supposed to be happening. USB debugging is enabled and the terminal emulator app is installed. The sd card is mounted by the phone, not the computer. I still have 7+ GB left on the sd card.
$ adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
gives me permission denied, too.
I've never installed Visionary or any other temp root app. The closest solution to this problem I saw was in response to a guy who had installed Visionary before, and so didn't need to worry about having superuser permissions. The only reason I could find that this might not work is because of stuff about rolling back OTA updates.
Thanks for any responses. Let me know if you need any more info.
I just used this method last night. Make sure you have USB debugging on first of all and make sure you don't have the "USB connected" option ticked when it prompts you. You want that off.
I had the permission denied too but when I turned off the USB Connection that mounts my sd card, I got it to work. Good luck!
The weird part is he specifically says he checked those things (USB debugging enabled and the SD card not mounted to the computer). Not sure why he'd be getting a permission denied (reading/writing from the SD card should not have any problems).
What OS are you running ADB on? And maybe this is a silly question but you are running the commands from your computer and not the terminal on your phone, right?

I think I misspoke (typed?); when I said it was mounted by the phone, I meant I had selected to turn USB storage on with the phone. I thought I remembered seeing a way to do it through the computer, but I'm probably wrong. Either way, turning USB storage off fixed it, and now that I think about it, I understand why I would be getting permission denied. I guess I didn't fully understand what the wiki meant by "Make sure your phone's sdcard is mounted by your phone and not your computer when following these instructions."
For the record I'm using Windows 7 Professional, and installing ADB was a project in and of itself. Don't know if anyone else had problems with it.
Thanks for your help everyone. This is a great forum.
Great! Glad to be joined by another newly rooted user! CM7 Gingervillain is a great ROM, and I recommend you flash that. It already has an OC kernal built in so it's less work. All you would have to do is flash CM7 and then get SetCPU.
I love being rooted!
Edit: nevermind, I saw there was a superuser permission pop-up on my phone that I wasn't seeing before.

Do the nightly builds have 4G working yet? It's not a huge deal because I use wifi at home, but it would be nice to keep 4G on there.

[Q] Htc Desire ermmm bricked :(

Evening everyone
Got a BIG problem with my phone today and having searched and read i still cant fix it
Ok a little about my phone: Rooted with amon recovery, recently s/off, CyanogenMod 7 rom and kernel, -32 radio..

Did a nandroid backup in recovery of the rom i was using ^^ and all seemed fine, i then rebooted my phone,, booted up, waited for everything to work and then i noticed my apps weren't there?
Went into storage and it showed no memory card,, so i rebooted phone hoping this might fix but it didn't.
Plugged my phone into laptop and a message flashed up "usb device not recongnised" i though Sh!t whats happened ?
So i booted my phone into recovery to mount the sd and a message again "error cant mount sd"
Clicked reboot phone and now its stuck on the "why so serious" screen ???????
Ive dloaded the sdk tool but really not sure what i should be typing in there ??
Anyone with a little time care to help me out please lol ???
Cheers
EDIT: I have flashed nearly every rom on xda since i rooted about 4 months ago without any problems, always did the wipes in recovery before flashing so really dont know what has happened here ?

Looks like you have been usb bricked, look this forum for usb brick fix, its not the fault of the rom, it just sometimes happens. Got it once too, easely to fix.
Sent from my HTC Desire
Im not blaming the rom not one bit as its been running fine this morning up untill i did the backup.
I have read and read that much my heads spinning %-( there's hek of a lot to take in and being a rather noooooob im lost as to what i should do
Worstenbrood is right, that's.just a USB brick, don't worry, it's an easy fix. Search Modaco for USB rickrolled.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...com/309939/usb-brick-rickrolled-b0rked-fixed/
You can skip step one.
Not to worry ? im bricking it lmao
I really aint got a clue about the fastboot thingy if you have a little time could you give me a step by step of how its done
cheers
Download the SDK and then use the command prompt to run the fastboot command from the Modaco tutorial.
There are quite a few guides for fastboot, just Google it
Hi
I just ran the command and when entered it said fastboot not found?
You need to run it from the directory containing fastboot.executive (in the SDK).
thanks for the replies
i have tried that but im getting 'adbwinapi.dll is missing from your computer'
i have re-installed sdk and still wont work?
Did you do this
Windows XP / Vista
Right click on the My Computer icon and select the properties tab.
Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
In the new dialog box dowble-click on Path (located under System Variables) and type in the full path location to the tools directory.
Has to be done for it to work
If you have never used sdk before Google for a good install & how to use guide
whooohoooo right solved the sd problem, new rom flashed and powered up Many Thanks guys "but" i still cant use the usb on laptop ?
When i plug usb in it the phone only charges ? and an usb not recognised message ?
did u install the htc drivers from the htc website? i was having problems with connecting my phone dowloaded those and un-installed sync and all was fixed!
i get 'usb not recognised message' every now and then on my home pc and the works pc both running Windows 7 64bit.
I found that usually when it pops up about
'usb not recognised message'
i just unplug the cable then back in a few seconds after the message then it usually connects ok. sometimes it takes a few attempts.
thats with 'HTC Wildfire_setup_3.0.5481' installed for the 64bit drivers.
Thanks very much guys for all your help managed to get the usb fixed by installing htc sync
But now i have another problem i noticed today is Bluetooth wont turn on ? is there a fix out there for this ?
cheers
Im experiencing strange reboots now with phone plugged into laptop via usb, and on the status bar on phone it show usb debugging and then dissapears and comes back and when i unplug usb the phone reboots?
I wiped the laptop yesterday and phone seemed fine and now the troubles have come back
In logcat error im also getting this message when i enable bluetooth
attempting to remove unknown iface (usb0), ignoring
bt_enable: Timeout waiting for HCI device to come up
Seems as if the brick has actually fooked my phone up good and proper !

Desire, unrevoked failed -> unable to reboot when connected to usb

Hello,
I'm having some troubles while trying to root my friend's phone.
I tried using UnRevoked. I used the same method for my own phone and it worked without any issues, so the drivers etc should be installed properly.
During the rooting procedure Unrevoked will reboot the device, but the device got stuck on the HTC loading screen. And just stayed there, nothing happend. Unrevoked screen displayed: "Waiting for device to reboot"
I pulled the battery and rebooted with usb cable still plugged in. But device wouldnt reboot, it got stuck on HTC loading screen again...
I finally pulled the battery again, tried reboot without usb cable, this worked, when I advanced to the second HTC loading screen (the one with 'quietly brillant' subtitle), at which point I quickly plugged the usb cable back in, so maybe Unrevoked would pick up where it was. But I now got the error: "coudln't find misc"
So long story short: Rooting failed, thankfully I can still boot and everything is still there. Rebooting phone with usb plugged in doesn't work. I also sometimes get the "7 vibrates" when trying to boot (not sure what that means, googling this error didn't help me alot though...)
Phone is running android 2.2 btw, is there an (easy) solution to rooting without having to reboot the phone while connected to usb?
Sorry for the lengthy read and thanks in advance everyone!
Grtz!
Are you using ClockworkMod or AmonRA as the recovery image?
Maybe try the one you haven't tried yet?
R.
hi & thanks,
I just tried the default one, so that would be Clockwork recovery.
Which version of amon ra do you suggest?
Although I don't think that would solve the issue, since it just seems that the phone doesnt want to boot up whenever it is connected to USB...
Grtz
I haven't had any problems with RA version 2.0.1, and I think it's the image that Robocik recommended with his RCMixHD ROM.
Just noticed the link in his thread no longer works but it seems to be available on a German forum (Google 'RA recovery 2.0.1' and follow the link to the androidhilfe.de forum - sorry but I'm not permitted to post the link).
There are ways to flash it through fastboot, but it not something I've needed to do.
Good luck!
I just discovered another symptom:
The phone also keeps asking to set the time zone quite often!
Is this normal? The is usually still correct, but it still asks me to set, which I find odd.
I'm pulling the battery on this phone alot, but still I thought there was some kind of internal battery to store this kind of information? Could it be a symptom that there's something wrong with the phone?
The first symptom was never booting when connected to USB.
2nd: Sometimes getting stuck at same bootscreen, even when not connected to USB.
Also shutting down is sometimes difficult, getting stuck at HTC bootscreen again.
3rd: Often asks to set the time.
Edit: It booted succesfully while connected to USB this time... I hate it when there always seems to be an exeption to a problem right after you post it online
Edit2: The time setting problem might be because there's no simcard in the phone?
You need a fully working sd and sim card to root your phone with unrevoked.
For the problem with the time: menu>settings>date & time>uncheck "automatic (use network provided values)".
Thanks, I'll try this that later this evening!

Here you find solutions which maybe also work for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902307
@swimon:
When using linux you do not need to install the modified usb drivers. You only need to this in windows.
Thanks for all the help everyone.
I tried running the unrevoked root procedure again, this time with a working SIM card inserted.
Everything works fine, phone reboots when it should reboot and everything. But it still doesn't work. I get the error "Internal Error: Couldn't find misc" while the phone keeps rebooting over and over...
I noticed though, that I got a lot of notifications by windows "usb device not recognized" "usb device not working properly" etc during the procedure, I cant remember if this happened the when I rooted my first phone... Or could this be a sign that there's something wrong with the drivers?
What now?!
@mattdroid: oh okay, didn't know that.
Okay check list:
Installed modified hboot drivers?
Uninstalled htc sync (and not the drivers)?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
Which pvt version does your friend's desire have (boot into hboot bootloader, first line)?

When connect your phone to your computer (in usb debug mode and on only charge), in the device manager of windows you should be able to find a device like "android phone 1.0". If this is so, the drivers are installed correctly.
Just to be sure, do this procedure again:
1.) Install htc sync (you need this program to install drivers correctly)
2.) Install hboot drivers: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
3.)
a) Disconnect phone from pc
b) Make sure you have the following settings in your phone:
Checked "unknown sources" in settings>applications?
Usb debugging enabled (settings>applications>development)?
Set phone's connection type to "only charge" (if you have problems try "storage") and "never ask again" (settings>connect with pc)?
4.) Reboot phone
5.) Uninstall only htc sync and not the drivers (htc sync driver installer)
6.) Reboot computer (important)
7.) Now start unrevoked (reflash_package.exe) with administrator rights in windows
8.) Connect phone with computer
9.) WAIT ... WAIT .... WAIT until unrevoked says "done"
Thanks for the nice little tutorial!
will try and post results tomorrow!
I have been running unrevoked normally (without administrator rights) this whole time, maybe that has been causing the problem.
Grtz!

Well.. this happend to me.. what i have done was.. i just downloaded older version of unrevoked and it work like a charm..may be you can give it a shot
But I think older versions of unrevoked don't support android 2.2 ?
Going to try MatDroid method now
FFS!
I tried everything from scratch. Like MatDroid described.
Seems like this phone just doesn't want to reboot when it's on USB!!
How long are your supposed to wait when unrevoked displays "waiting for reboot" and the phone is on HTC boot screen?
And what could cause this phone to have so much difficulties powering on and off?
Grtz
edit: first thing unrevoked does is pushing the recovery, later it get's stuck on bootscreen, but doesn't this mean the recovery is already on my phone and I can maybe install it manually?

Sometimes unrevoked cannot do the "final reboot". After 20 minutes without changes, pull the battery and wait 10 minutes. Now put battery in and start phone. If you have the superuser app in your applications, everything is fine. After this, check wether unrevoked flash recovery.

[Q] DHD root attempt / Unbootable DHD

Hey guys,
I tried to root my DHD, but it didn't go as as smooth as I expected and at the moment my DHD won't boot anymore.
First I would like to say I read the manual carefully several times, and I searched for a answer, I found some related problems but they were so different to my problem that I couldn't find any answers in it.
First I ran the AAHK, chose for a downgrade and then I got something like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822347
Except, I got stuck at the HBOOT menu, and nothing happened. When I rebooted my phone, it worked just fine, but it wasn't downgraded.
I tried to repeat this proces a couple of times, but it didn't help.
But then, suddenly, it did work to start downgrading, but in the end it gave an error:
************* Downgrade failed *************
** Either:
** GoldCtixiard/SDCard failed
** USB connections are not working 100%
************* Downgrade failed *************
After my DHD rebooted, and after the HTC screen, it showed red exclamation mark/triangle. It is still like this, and my phone won't boot, but i'm still able to get in HBOOT.
It is somewhat like this, but I know i haven't downgraded.

Some help would be greatly appriciated!
P.S.
I really tried to figure it out myself first, but after searching, reading and searching, I found no good answer. If anyone finds this annoying or offensive in any way, im sorry.
I think your sdcard is corrupted as a goldcard. Try a new one.
I checked the SD card. It reads and writes fine on Mac and PC.
The biggest problem is that i can't connect my DHD (in HBOOT) to AAHK using Mac. AAHK says ''Error detecting HTC phone on USB conncetion''
I also tried factory reset in HBOOT, but it didn't help.
Anyone got an idea?

For the connection, try a Linux LiveCD; I don't know anything about Macs. For the sdcard, whether it is corrupted for use as a goldcard does not affect whether you can access the data on it.
I'm not an expert, but aren't OSX and Ubuntu quite similar, regarding the environment? Nonetheless, I am going to try the Ubuntu LiveCD tomorrow!
Is there another solution so that i'm at least able to boot the phone normally?
Thanks for the help so far.
Run a ruu from bootloader thrall get u back
So you mean I should follow these instructions?

Hey guys,
I tried to root my DHD, but it didn't go as as smooth as I expected and at the moment my DHD won't boot anymore.

That is the stock recovery. You have on screen instructions that you are apparently not following. That will flash a RUU but first use tacoroot to achive temp root. All that is describe in the Hack Kit session on screen. You won't be able to flash a ruu from hboot unless there's a ruu for your phone and your main version and CID match.
The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind.....
At the moment i don't have any on screen instructions, because I cant connect my phone to my PC/Mac. AAHK says ''Error detecting HTC phone on USB conncetion''.
I'm trying to find a solution so that i can at least boot my phone again. I know I am new to this, but i'm trying to do my best..
So i cant connect to AAHK, what is the best way to fix this problem?

What is your main version and cid number??
Boot the phone in fastboot usb and then plug it to the pc (you will see fastboot usb in red). Then, in the pc open a cmd as admin and type:
Code:
fastboot getvar all
Paste here the INFOcidnum and INFOmain data. DO NOT PASTE your IMEI here.

I did just like you said. When I connect to the pc, fastboot usb is in red. I opened cmd as admin, typed, but nothing happened.
I get ( this is translated from Dutch ) :
"fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
When I plugged it in, my pc gave a message about a device being plugged in, but nothing happened after that.
I saved everything that happened in the terminal, when I attempted to root. Would that be of any help?

Do you have adb and fastboot installed? run the hack Kit once and let it install adb and fastboot.
I downloaded the Android SDK, wich I saw includes adb and fastboot
I typed fastboot getvar all, and then the cmd screen says waiting for device...
When I tried this before ( when I hadn't downloaded the android sdk ) nothing at all happened. So something must have changed for the better..
In the AAHK i still get ''phone not plugged in'''( windows )
However, when I boot the phone ( volume down + power ), after a few seconds it says:
PD89DIAG.ZIP
Loading...
No Image!
PD89IMG.ZIP
Loading
No Image! ( Or wrong image .. )
After that it returns to the standard menu..

Hack kit won't work from fastboot. Or your driver is not correctly installed or you have issues with USB connectivity. Uninstall the driver from control panel and then re install it with the device unplugged. Once it is installed, plug, the phone and let it install properly

I can't seem to connect my phone to pc and/or mac
I even installed HTC Sync, but since the phone can't boot, it wont connect to any device using USB.
I know it isn't bricked, I still can get into HBOOT, but it just wont boot, and it won't connect using USB ( at least until now.. )
Is there a way to fix this? Will it fix anything to do a factory reset using a stock rom? ( just guessing )
Would it be helpfull to post everything that happened in the terminal while i was attempting to root? I saved it in a textfile..
Thanks for the help so far.

Yes that might be helpful. If your main was lowered and you have temp root, that will take just a while to fix it. Otherwise will not be that easy. Do you mind If I have a look at it over teamviewer?
I think my main was lowered ( or ot least changed ), but i dont think i dont have temproot. In HBOOT it still displays S-ON.
I will PM you the data concerning the rooting session.
