HTC Desire always on overnight - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running a s-offed 2.3 custom rom, and when I left out overnight, the battery usage showed the phone was awake the whole time. I tried installing spare parts but it force closed whenever I want to see battery usage to determine what's been keeping my phone awake. Any idea is appreciated.

do u have it plugged in? u can set your phone to stay awake while plugged in thru applications, dev, stay awake

I don't have it plugged in, I don't want it to be awake overnight that's all to save battery.

It is advised to set the wifi sleep policy to 'never'.
Which rom are you using?

Wifi is set to never sleep already. I'm running oxygen 2.0.1.

Is it my phone? I can't work pig wot it is. I checked the battery usage #*#*4636*#*#) and it seems the Android system is using A LOT of it. I tried charging with phone off, clearing battery stats, not overcharging, but just can't resolve this issue.
Also, I have sync set to update manually and have mobile internet off always, only on wen needed. Same with WiFi. Screen is on auto and time off screen lock set to 30 seconds
I am using OpenDesire sense Rom
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

I could feel WiFi siginal of 2.2 is much better that stock 2.1,
I suppose that the better performance will bring the fast battery drain,
if your custom ROM support WiFi N mode,
that really makes your battery life short that before.
I have the same problem and same settings as you. I read on other forum that people who updated to official 2.2 have even better battery life.
I cant even squeze 20 hours out of my battery :/
You guys should always post what ROMs you are using...
Opendesire 3.3, its the same with defrost.
i also had really bad battery life on those 2 roms
even doing nothing the phone would just keep dropping
go to official froyo 2.2
neophye roms for me have amazing battery life = 48 hrs..
Agree with cygnet

Check if the phone goes to sleep correctly. Spareparts > battery usage: other usage, since last unplugged.
I had the same problem, until I found out that the phone was not going to sleep. (running and screen on percentages were way off. Almost 100% running and a lot less for screen on.
update to the last radio
I found that after forcing everything to install to SD card my battery life plummeted. There were apps/widgets that should have stayed on the phone. Once I moved these back, battery life was back to normal.
I use Systempanel to see the battery drain graph and could see a pattern to it.
Same issue here, Will try Neophyte tonight
Using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663, and it's fantastic! However batt life on .08 and .20 radio is a shocker. I watched a 1 min trailer on youtube, in and out and I lost 4% battery. Before with OpenDesire I'd be shocked if the battery percentage even twitched slightly.

I use Defrost 1.5a and I just use about 2% every hour when the phone is sleeping, and that's with auto sync and mobile data enabled. (disabled it's 1%/hour)
Always underclock to the lowest mhz when the screen is off using SetCPU and when you do use your phone make sure the brightness isn't too high.
I could make a whole list of tips, but I'm sure you'll find more than enough of those on the net.

I may be dumb but how do you force your phone to go into sleep once screen is turned off ?

When your screen is off, your phone should automatically go to sleep. Sometimes widgets or apps keep this from happening (like the music player), making it use battery as if you are constantly working on it.
How I resolved this issue was to find out what app or widget caused this. I ended up starting from a fresh reset, installing first all apps I really use (calendar/message widgets, powerstrip etc.)
I tested by installing an app, rebooting (or sometimes not), check the running time of the phone, turning screen off, and check again in 5 minutes. The phone should go to sleep in about 30 - 40 seconds. I am telling you this, because most apps causing this are widgets/apps running constantly.
However, I found in spareparts also that 'settings' was taking alot of usage time in usage statistics. A simple reboot did the trick from here on. But I am guessing I had installed something which made some app not close properly..
Maybe it is better to have a task manager/killer for these situations.
Running and Screen On percentages should not have too much of a difference if your testing and not using the phone while screen is off (music, bg stuff)
You could try juicedefender, it helps improve battery life by disabling unneeded connections while the phone is not in use

[Q] What's draining the battery so quickly? :S

My phone loses battery at a phenomenal rate. Overnight it goes from 100% to 75%, then this morning it went from 70% at 9:00 to 10% at 12:00, what's draining it so badly, in both cases it's been inactive.
Check if your phone keeps syncing with your accounts.
That is one area which drains the battery.
I left Wi-Fi off so it wouldn't be that
Battery is disaster... I have same problems.
Could be the /INIT bug, which will go away if you enable USB debugging.
Press Menu then:
Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging (tick it)
Also, check your sync settings as iAltair suggested.
Press Menu then:
Settings > Accounts & Sync
Turn off anything you don't use and for the stuff you do use set a reasonable sync time like 3hrs.
Don't forget to check calendar sync settings too as when I first set up my phone it added calendars I didn't want to use. To do so, open the calendar and press menu.
You can also check battery usage but I can't remember how since I used BetterCut to create a homescreen shortcut for it. It's in the settings somewhere though!
Could also be the problem with HTC Sense sync. Try to disable that completely. For me that was the problem which for some reason made the CPU work at nearly 100% constantly. After I disabled that my battery lasts 18-20 hours during heavy use.

It will still sync over wi-fi which will drain battery, also wi-fi itself will drain battery if left on

I have this problem when I do OTA 1.72. Right now I'm still in1.72, but with root s.cid,etc...etc..etc... and I see and high use of battery. Read a couple oft thread about and:
disable all sync (htc, google, weather, news) but it's on for market.
On and OFF usb debug
So try everythig.
Today I found the setting/phone info/battey/battery usage.
ALL is fine, all IS under 10% except DISPLAY, it's run from 55 to 69% !?!?!? Possible?
Possible tweak?
How much % your dispaly use?
ROM revolution 2.0.4
Andorid 2.2.1 - 1.72
kernel....haven't the phone in my hand, it's charging at 1st floor.
also check email setting as the on-peak(checks every 15mins) and off-peak(can't remember think every hour) but on-peak starts at 8am-8pm this is by default. depending how many emails you have, this could drain battery quite a bit too.
and doesn't matter if you have wifi and moblie data off the apps will still try an sync.
Do nothing except install currentwidget to log use of battery, for report here.
From 02.00pm to 4.14pm, display use from 30% to 42% .

Display uses a lot of battery. It is Big. My usually uses about 50%. Currently it is at 60%. I use screen display brightness at auto.
Regards, Ales
I set bright to auto. I think it isn't the problem. Sometime it's 60, or45, and also 33% of battery use. I charge phone all night. Pickup at 07.45, i disable also email check. I drain about 10% of battery for hour. After 3h39m I'm at 61%. During this time the phone was standby for 90% of the time.

What programs can I use to check what programs are preventing my phone from sleeping?

Hello I am running a gingerbread rom. I use cpuspy to monitor what percentage of the time my phone is sleeping. There is a program that is keeping my phone from sleeping but I don't know what exactly it is. Spare parts does not work for gingerbread. I have the phone unplugged and my phone still does not sleep. My phone does sleep some but something is stopping it from sleeping all the time when my phone is not in use. Please help. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I freeze google talk and I believe that fixed my problem.

CPU won't go to deep sleep after certain time

Tried CM9 RC2 and Full Throttle 7.1, the same thing happened:
I unplug my phone in the morning after browsing for a few things, then left the phone basically idle for a few hours. Then use it for a few minutes of different activities. For the first few hours the phone goes into deep sleep, after I use it for a few minutes the phone will refuse to go into sleep again, awake until I restart it.
I have been using CPU Sleeper to force the phone into sleep, doesn't really help at all.
Any clue?
Install Better Battery Stats to help determine if an application is keeping your phone in wakelock.

Thanks! it's a great app! trying it now!
any luck?
not yet, seems behaving as expected after installing the app. Still deciding between CM9 RC2 and Full Throttle 7.1, so may need a couple more trials to point things out.

Regarding the Awake length when checking the battery

Hey guys. So, I'm currently using a stock rom for the XS w/ SSKernel v7 on it. I usually run my phone in OnDemand governor w/ 1.62ghz up and 138mhz (thru SystemTuner). When my phone is on standby for like 7-8 hours, 5-10% of my battery gets eaten up. And when I check the battery consumption (thru Settings ->Battery ->Battery Graph illustration), the phone is usually awake for like 75-90% of the time. How is this possible and are there any ways on lowering this down so that I could save more battery during standby?? Hope you guys could help me out with this Thanks..
P.S. WiFi, BT, Data Access(Mobile Internet) are off. Only the network carrier sim is on.
Can you provide a screenshot

I just charged my phone again But your awake length isn't that much. How did you do it? I tried switching to KA19 rom. Still testing it out though.
First, ur settings are not optimal.
Second, dont trust ur battery. Use betterbatterystats to look for wakelocks and something like that.
Here's my screenshot. Apparently, that 7 hours is like standby coz I was sleeping at that time. You could see that it's been awake for a heck of a time and it's just so annoying to see that. What should I do??
Battery was from 82%-76% when I left it at standby mode.
