Okay, so I researched my issue and didn't really find an answer. I'm not sure it is even the same issue, let me explain.
I rooted my phone using unrevoked, the latest one. I haven't flashed any roms or anything. I just deleted some bloatware and use wireless tether and shootme...etc....
The other while I was surfing the net on my laptop, I lost the signal. I went to my room and saw my phone rebooting. I didn't think too much of it until I realized it kept repeating after the 4g screen. I instinctively removed the battery and let it cool down. I replaced the battery and the same thing still happened. I wouldn't boot past the 4g screen.
I made a nandroid backup about a month ago and decided to just backup once again. I backed it up and restored the backup from a month ago. It worked fine. Now I tried to restore the most recent one and it wouldn't work at all. The same repetition of the boot screen, I believe it is called boot loop. I don't know.
My question is how would I be able to restore that most recent back up and why isn't it working? What could've possibly occurred to cause this malfunction?
I also read somewhere that battstatpro could be the culprit?
Cliffnotes:
Rooted phone a month ago
Did a nandroid backup & titanium backup (same day)
Phone stopped working while using wireless tether
Stuck in bootloop?
How do I fix it?
Thank you

Well I can't say for sure what caused the phone to initially wack out and go into a bootloop, but I'll tell you why the nandroid backup didn't work. The reason you can restore you're original backup, from a month ago when you rooted, is because you created that backup when your device was operating correctly. Since this most recent backup was created when you're phone wouldn't even boot to begin with, it will not work. The backup takes an exact copy of your entire system the way that it is when you make that backup. Since your phone was inoperable at the time of the backup, whatever it is that is broken was also copied to that backup, thus the reason it wont work. A nandroid restore will only be as good as your phone was when you created that backup.
Thank you. Is there anyway where I would be able to pull any information off that backup or fix that backup or at least get it to boot?

Your welcome. I've never tried accessing any info or data from nandroid backup before, but I found this thread on how to do it. I've never tried it, so can't confirm nor deny if it works, but it looks like you're answer may be in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890508
Thanks...I'll check it out

I did a search, but, didn't find anything that was quite like my question.
I recently had to return my EVO for warranty work. I was given a new one at the store.
Before I went to the Sprint store, I made a backup using ROM Manager/Clockworkmod that morning. So, I brought my new EVO home, went throught the jailbreak/unlock process, and, installed ROM Manager.
I opened ROM Manager, found the backup I had made, and started the restore process. From all appearances, the restore is going fine. It finishes the process, and I reboot the phone.
At this point, that smooth sailing starts hitting whitecaps. It starts to reboot, but, it never finishes. It's just an endless reboot loop. It will just loop through the intitial reboot screens until the battery is dead. I know, I let it sit that long.
I also had a couple of other, earlier, backups on the SD card. I tried those with the same result. Does anyone have an idea as to why the restore gets stuck in the boot process?
I would really appreciate any help with this. I'm at a loss at this point.
Thanks,

Admins,
Sorry, it just hit me that, while I was searching the Development forum for info on ROM Manager and Clockworkmod, I posted my question to the forum also.
Please move to the appropriate forum. My apologies; I obviously was on autopilot when I posted.

Your issue is that your new phone is not the same as your old one. Your backups will not work cross devices.

I hope you removed the wimax.img from clockwork before backing it up.. not sure if the version of clockwork you used had the ability to backup your 4g keys....
Be careful and if you got the new Evo then I would suggest Amon

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate you taking time to answer.
The answers have led to a couple of follow-up questions. First, is there any sort of workaround for restoring a Clockworkmod backup onto another device?
Second, I have to admit to no knowledge of the issue of removing a wimax.img file, and, whether or not the version of Clockworkmod I used made a backup of the files.
Thanks again for the help.

More than likely you have different hardware. Clockwork backups will not work on different devices. Backups are device spefic.
Best bet is going to be to unroot, flash stock pc36img. Reroot flash rom of choice (virus Mytouch port ). Youre going to have to start over. That will give you the best chance of success.
Use titanium backup for apps and back contacts to google for if this were to happen again.
Before I went to sleep last night I decided to backup my phone via recovery. After it backed up I rebooted and I had no service and a service called com.phone or something like that would force close every 5 seconds. I went back into recovery and reflashed CM7 and it bootlooped. I went back into recovery and restored a backup from the day before and it worked flawlessly. I hadn't changed any type of settings, I had just installed the new Swiftkey Beta and Robot Unicorn Attack between the 2 backups. Through trial and error and many reboots into recovery I found out that it is the data portion of the backup that was causing the problems. Does anyone know why this happened? I am a little nervous about doing another backup for fear of not being able to use my phone.
CM7 Stable
Incredikernal (latest)
hboot .92
3.0.0.8 recovery
I suspect the backup had nothing to do with it. I'd bet you would have had the same problems after a simple reboot.
As far as I know, a nandroid backup simply reads from the phone and writes to the SD. I don't see how it could have changed anything on the phone itself.
That's what I thought. I can't remember if I had recently rebooted at that point but after getting the phone working through a restore of the previous backup I tried one last time and restored the backup that had caused the problem and the problem persisted.
How much free space do you have on data/data?

I had been unhappy with the way my phone was acting the last couple of weeks, so I decided it was time to flash back to a previous nandroid backup I made a few weeks ago. I stupidly didn't make another backup before flashing back (I thought 'why should I? I don't like the way my phone is setup now, and I want it back the way it was when I made a backup before).
Now I'm stuck with 95% of my apps giving me Unfortunately, (app) Has Stopped. I can't get Ti backup, rom manager, Franco.kernel to work, all Google apps except Play Store don't work. I've wiped everything and tried the recovery again with the same results.
What should I do now?

Thank you sooooooo much!!!!
First post and I have to say great forum here and lots of great information!!
I am a long time unix / linux user and work in the technology product development and I have been researching for about a week after updating to official ICS over Kies for information on backuping up my phone and rooting.
I had considered rooting before but never had a good reason really until I loaded the official ICS update and had to reset to get it working, losing all my apps / data. Kies was not cooperating so I did not get a good backup and it would not keep my app settings any way. This is when I found out that my old Blackberry and even iPhone had much more complete backup solutions that non-rooted Android. I have totally recovered the other devices without losing anything in the past so I thought Android would be a snap as well.
Any way to the point now. After searching I have found great work done by the members and I feel pretty comfortable proceeding to root my stock ICS and getting Titanium to do a full backup. I will fix my keyboard and few other things while at it.
My questions are:
1. When the next official release comes from ATT / Samsung will I have to reflash to the stock boot.img (found in another thread) to be able to get the upgrade and then root my phone again?
2. Once rooted, is it better to just come back here and get the updated ROM and flash manually?
3. Is the best way to achieve the complete backup solution I am looking for?
I am pretty happy with the stock ROMs but I want to be able to get a good and full backup going forward since it takes so long to reinstall everything. I could even live with the bloatware if I was confident I could completely restore at anytime.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Roy
Titanium is good for backing up apps and data. If you want a complete back up, you'll want to make a nandroid backup with CWMR. As for the ROM part, it all depends on if you're happy with what you get stock or if you like customized things. I'm sick right now or I would go into detail.

Thanks Shawn. I saw a reference to nandroid but did not realize it was part of CWMR. Can I assume if I get CWMR loaded I will be able to backup my current apps / settings or will that just set me up for the next time? I have been sort of assuming once I get CWMR loaded and get root that I may lose my current settings.
Appreciate the reply especially while sick! Hope you feel better soon.

A nandroid backup is more like an image backup of the flash, so you would have to restore the whole thing to get back any files you may have lost. It's mostly for backing up prior to flashing a new ROM, so if you don't like it you can go back to what you had easily.
If you want to back up pictures and things like that you should be able to plug the phone into a computer and mount the flash as a drive (I've done this on my Linux and Windows systems many times). Then you can copy the files you want to save to your computer, or copy a new ROM to the phone so you can flash it with CWMR.
You're welcome. Nandroid backups are for when your phone bootloops or is "bricked" or if you want to restore to something previous. For me, I use Titanium to backup all app data before flashing something and then make a Nandroid with CWMR. In my opinion its a good idea to use both so you're safe from any problems down the road.

mvi57 and Shawn,
Thanks guys, got it now. I will probably do both types of backups as well.
I think I understand the system a little better now. The recovery partition probably does not affect the bootloader or ROM so if I just replace it with CWMR I still boot the same and will not lose my current data. I am guessing the next official ROM will probably load fine but I would probably just have to root the phone again.
Thanks for putting up with the noob questions. I have not done embedded development before but some of the guys on team have so I have some terminology i need to get used to.

It's a hard lesson to learn that there were relatively easy solutions to avoid it :/ I as a fellow long time Linux user, I'm suprised!. I myself can not stand not having root access when I need it. I luckily have had Titanium Backup for quite some time now and it IS a life saver for many of your apps and settings! It's a must! I too had the issue of not being able to update via kies and assumed it was because my device was rooted, so in my frustrated lack of sleep mood I had going, I said meh all and grabbed easily accessible data off the memory and flashed the ICS from sammobile.com if i remember right. I've since flashed NardRom as well and am having some signal/sms issues. That being said, MAKE SURE you do a nandroid backup and don't get all anxious and overzealous like I did. If I am not mistaken and understand correctly, sometimes when flashing roms you may overwrite various signal related files like the modem or wireless? With a nandroid backup you can simply restore from that like nothing ever happened! Just follow directions to the T. I've yet to brick my SGH-i927 but I've bricked our captivates a few times

I am with you all the way.
I have installed CWMR now and completed a nandroid backup. After tracking down the backup I copied to my laptop for safe keeping. Also installed the keyboard fix only and it worked fine. Later tonight I will give root a try with Titanium.
BTW I was having SMS issues with the stock ICS. No alerts and basic funky things. I have loaded Go SMS Pro and am happier not only fixing the app issues but giving me Group text mode so I am not an outcast with the rest of my iPhone family
Thanks for helping me get going here.

As others have posted. I back up all my information per app via Titanium backup and every few months I make a new Nandroid backup. This gives me the best of both worlds. A full backup that I can get back to via Nandroid backup and little backups from Titanium backup if I choose to uninstall and re-install an individual app later on in the future.
Just a few other tips from my recent experiences. Since the problems I was having with NardROM... an entire night with no text msgs from my ole lady got me pretty worried and I learned it was issues with my flash or the rom with my phone so I wiped it out and went back to the stock ICS. I also flashed the keyboard fix and have noticed no problems. I did flash the tether fix too but it's not working for me at the moment so I'll play with it later. I'm also using my regular Captivate as a secondary phone/toy using google voice and wireless so if I'm not getting anything on one # during testing or usage I will notice it and get it on the other phone.
Also, as a long time GOSMS user I like to try out the various features but I must warn you stay away from, or have a backup plan on top of it, if you purchase the 180-day premium features and utilize the local backup. I'm not fond of having things backed up to a cloud so like you I back up all my phone stuff to my server and desktops at home but running raid 5 (paranoid much?). The problem I had is when I restored all my text from the cloud after a flash and noticed the new local backup feature in a GOSMS update I thought hey i can do away with the cloud and use this right!? Wrong. I deleted the cloud backup without double checking and on this last flash, attempted to restore roughly 20k+ messages from the Gosms local backup feature and it errored out or froze the phone EVERY time I tried. Frantically searching through everything I had, I learned that Titanium Backup does do a backup typically of the related data, I beleive the listed backup is SMS/APN/MMS or something similar. You have to enable writing to /system in Titanium's settings. There's a howto on xda I beleive and google searches on restoring it. Another thing, if you have numerous backups and are playing around and i.e. have just flashed, installed Titaniumbackup and want to backup something before you restore it from an older version, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CHANGED MAX # of BACKUPS FIRST, otherwise you have just overwritten your previous backup :crying:

Great information thanks!!
The backups I am most worried about are all the system settings, app settings and data mostly. I am probably older than most folks here and I do not really text much except family and a few co-workers. I honestly never worried about backing up my SMS / MMS but I will check on my APNs because I had that problem on a Blackberry once. Email is where I store most important stuff and talk about paranoid I have multiple copies of my emails on different computers on different operating systems. 20 years working in storage will do that to you
I believe that if Google or Samsung even came up with a backup solution that did what Blackberry or Apple could do it would solve a lot and I probably would not even be working on this. Blackberry saved my bacon more than once with the complete backup they do in their clunky software and last year when my daughters iPhone would no longer power off, I was able to use iTunes to do a complete backup and she was up and running on a new phone in 15 mins exactly where she left off.
Thanks for the advice!
So I was got my s3 awhile back and rooted it and ran Clean bean without any problems, well after those annoying system update messages started to get to me I decided I wanted to try and new rom and update my phone a bit as I would be leaving the country and wanted my phone updated. So I decided to flash slimbeam , It went off without a hitch. Only problem was I could not figure out how to get Titanium backup to restore all my contacts and app data. I saved all the backup files on my computer and even after putting them in the Titanium backup directory it would not let me do it. Anyway.....I decided to try and use the titanium backup program that lets you extract the data from a nandroid backup and flash it in recovery. I forgot to put it on my internal card when doing so and when I did my wipe I deleted it (epic facepalm) so I have to reflash cleanbean go back into my phone and make the .zip file to flash...
So I got tired and went to bed before flashing anything else, when I wake up. My phone is stuck on the samsung boot image screen. I try starting only to get the same thing. So I boot to CWS recovery and try to restore one of my nandroid backups. I accidentally hit backup to external sd and it started to run a backup, thenn my car charger came unplugged and the phone died....thinking it would just make that specific nandroid corrupt I thought nothing of it. So I reboot to CWS recovery again and actually try to do a restore with my oldest nandroid, But I get the error "Error updating /system" and error updating "/data".....I tried multiple backups that I have, none of them work and all produce that message.. 'm fairly new to this, What Am I doing wrong? I really love this site and all you guys do and I will be forever greatful of any help you guys can give me. I leave the country for Mexico in 2 days and I cant afford to pay the $150 to get my phone warrantied from sprint!

Ok Lucid, stay calm.
First off, never do any work in Recovery without a fully charged phone. You're just asking for trouble if you're relying on the cable being plugged in.
I've never had good luck with trying to restore data in TiBu from a nandroid backup.
I'm not going to go into how to make your backups work. I'm honestly more concerned with just getting your phone back into working order. This thread has the most current Stock Rom in TAR form. Odin instructions can be found in this post within that thread.
After you're back to 100% stock, unrooted, you can follow the rooting guide to gain root back.
THANKS

Thanks man! Most appreciated! You just relieved a large amount of stress! I'll pay it forward!

Do what he said, I can vouch that restoring data through tibu from a nandroid has never worked for me either. If you backed up your contacts with Google you can just export them into a file (either .csv or .xml i forget) and then import that into your contacts

And after looking through the sextape forums thread a bit more, you don't actually have to reroot, just use the following TAR file:
"Restore" Versions - Wipes your user data
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Stock_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

They also have really good instructions for the Odin work on there.
Hope you get it working!
GOT IT! Thanks for the help man, worked like a charm. Even learned a thing or two .....So can you tell me how I get my stuff back using titanium backup? I got the backup files on my computer and I'm flashing a rom as I type this.

Here is a link to a post where I talked about Tianium Backup and what not to restore. It should be fairly informative.
In TiBu for SMS and call logs hit menu from the main screen and backup data as XML, select save locally when it's done. Move the xml files to external SD if you're gonna flash a 4.2.2 rom, flash new rom move the xmls back to internal, go to tibu, same menu, restore from xml and select which one you want to restore. It'll open a quasi file explorer, locate the corresponding xml for the option you chose(call log, SMS, wifi, bookmarks) and select it. It will restore the data via XML and you'll have all your call logs, sms, bookmarks and wifi accesspoints back like you never left your previous rom.
