Let me say this right off the bat the devs here are the best. I haven't tried any of the custom ROMs but from what I've read most people are happy with them.
So having said that I am wondering if Samsung / Sprint actually recruited the devs to help them make the best ROM available would it make the Android releases go faster?
My gut instincts tells me no. The devs here do it for the love of what they do and do it for free. I have to admire the talents and inspiration being put into the custom ROMs that we may never see in production releases due to the custom crap they put into it in hopes it all works.
Apple do have an advantage over this but still hinders innovation.
Bottom line is devs keep up the good work despite of us *****in at Sprint / Samsung about 2.2 and beyond.
Darkk
they didn't drop DK28 for no reason. they wanted the input.
Exactly. Why actually hire the devs here, when they can "leak" DK28 and get them to work for free. haha
I can tell you for a fact Sprint looks at XDA work...

Don't think they would knowingly higher an xda dev just because they would fear more of leaks and infrormation not being safeguarded as they do with there army of zombi devs....

they could for sure if they got everyone from SDX!!!!!!!!!
Just had an overthought out reply about software development vs cooking.. but then read the OP and realized it didn't say google..
The devs here could probably match sprints work.. probably not Samsung..probably close but their not known as being the greatest software company in the world anyway..
Their are very different fields of expertise, and comparing these level of skillsets is like comparing apples to oranges..

I think I'd have to somewhat Agree with R1ptide. The phone was so great I ran it stock for almost 2 weeks. And im a Modder and Flashaholic.
But really give the phone 3-5months minimum before complaining about dev's =)
We have some awesome developers already, and they're doing great work. Heck we have guys that don't even own the phone building kernels, and removing CIQ for us. I am pretty confident that you will have a fine selection of kernels, ROMs, and themes to pick from over time.
Lets spend more time encouraging and praising the guys and gals we do have working hard for us, and giving up their own time... instead of complaining about "this isn't nearly as good as EVO development".
I came from GSM att atrix slow development but I'm sure it will pick up. Atrix is kinda dead because people are rude just wait and it will pick up

What's wrong with trying to learn to do some things on your own? All these Devs had to start somewhere. So why wait around and complain? Sure, coding may be a big leap, but things like changing most graphics isn't that difficult. Take the time, do a little research and before long you won't be reliant upon others. Plus you'll have the satisfaction of your phone being Your phone.

All I really want is a AOSP rom, doesn't necessarily need to be CM7 but I figured if anyone can do it it will be their team first, but now that ICS SDK is out and source code probably soon I have my doubts that it will come at all to this phone.
.........................................
Hello everyone.
Im a HTC Faithful and currently using an Evo 4g still. This phone is starting to show its age and im thinking of picking up a Epic Touch.
But looking at the dev section, it doesnt seem that there are that many roms in progress, let alone any updated ICS roms. There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on.
Im just wondering where all the ICS roms are. If i moved over, id prob want to stick to ICS.
Anyone move from Evo to Epic Touch and feel that there are enough roms? That its being supported as much as other HTC phones?
Any input?
Depends. The Stock Touchwiz Roms from samsung has plenty of development here. The AOSP side we just barely got a CM7/KANG that has quite a few bugs. For some those bugs arent a problem, but for me it didnt pass as a daily driver.
Also the whole Clockworkmod-fused-with-the-kernel/rom on this phone will give you a headache if this is your first time rooting a Samsung Phone.
It would be my first Samsung rooting. I have looked over the instructions and saw it's somewhat different from HTC style, but nothing I can't handle.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I personally think samsung is easier when it comes to rooting, etc. I came from an evo 3d, and that was kind of a headache, especially themeing because of the .m10 files that it had. I kinda lean toward samsung though, if you cant tell by my sig.
No where
I see that no one has answered your main question...There are no ICS ROMs available as of right now...The deves are creating a base for it so when its possible to create one, they can implment it faster.
Uhhh. I guess the dev's are working on them.
I'd be stoked if you can work faster than they can, or pay them to work faster...
But it's not like changing a battery, there's a lot of work that goes into cooking a ROM.
They want to get CM7 complete and stable as a base to use for other Aosp roms. Samsung's official ICS for our device will have touchwiz and I think 95% of us don't want that. We need Aosp roms and kernels nailed down before we progress any further. Once the devs have a stable functional base to work from other doors will open. It takes time.

I'm not knocking the devs or anything. I understand how ROMs work and have built my own in the past.
I guess I'm just surprised that such a popular device doesn't have any devs working on ics while ancient devices like the Evo and HD2 have multiple roms.
What matters the most to me are phones that have a large modder base. I semi expected to see this place packed with devs and other crazy stuff. Caught me off guard that it's quieter in here then in the Evo section.

I think its more because Samsung is not releasing the source code, once they put it out our esteemed devs will bring ICS very fast. HTC is very fast about everything giving out source, update etc. I am just waiting for HTC to come with some phone which is a little bit better in specs and I am getting that. Samsung phones just looks beatifull. I want a phone that works as good and is backed up by support from the Manufacturer.
The fact is the Evo is no longer that great of a phone. It's nowhere near the same league of phone that the GS2 is, ICS withstanding.
Honestly the new Touchwiz isn't that bad. The only people making a big fat fuss over it seem to be previous HTC owners. Let me tell you, sense sucks big fat donkey balls compared to Touchwiz. I was a Go Launcher devotee prior to owning the Epic Touch. Touchwiz has proved to be ok for me.
I would still be completely happy with my day one purchase of Epic Touch even if we don't end up getting ICS until mid next year, gingerbread on this thing still flies compared to every other phone out there.
Furthermore, the OG Epic had a slow but steady dev community. Half the roms I flashed on the evo ended up being kangs or just plain crappy old skins. There were a few really good ones, salvagemod was the best vanilla AOSP. But really, the OG Epic community put out some real quality stuff, albeit at a slower pace.
Honest answer: jump in, the water is fine. Yeah, ICS will be quite nice once we get it, but in the meantime, there isn't a better phone you can get on sprint than the Epic touch.

Literally was writing this verbatim! LOL. I'm guessing OP posted without looking anywhere but the EVO forum and this Q and A section or the dozens of ICS threads would have reached out and smacked him in the eye.
Coming from HTC HeroC > LG Optimus S > HTC Evo 4G > HTC Evo 3D to this I was a bit shocked to not see as many devs picking the device up as well. I think everyone is missing what OP is saying and taking it as a bash, it is a surprise that more devs are not migrating towards the E4GT when this is obviously sprint best device to date. This device has the potential to be the next Evo 4G, development wise. It is crazy fast/smooth out of the box. It is also the easiest device I have rooted to date. When I left the Evo 3D for this near launch I did so for the screen size and the Exynos Processor, not for development. Even if no AOSP roms were to come to the device, one of the modified stock roms with Go Launcher on it is all I really need, though I want CM9, lol. That said we now have CM7 in the works, and CM9 will follow soon. Our AOSP devs are leaning more daily, and taking a lot of heat for what they are doing. Even if they are getting help from _______ (fill in blank), they are still taking all they are getting and putting it together for a awesome AOSP type rom. Who else is doing that for the device? Exactly!
But yet some still bash and call them Kang Bangers
I say go for it, find a deal on CL or FleaBay and jump. You will not be disappointed one bit

Considering how Nice and respectful I have been on this thread, I'm glad that you can understand EXACTLY where I'm coming from. Thank you for the information.
I'm not here to knock sgs2 nor am ragging on the hard working devs. I'm just staying a fact: there aren't very many different kinds of roms here.
And if you look in the Dev section, there are no ics roms to flash. No alphas. No betas. Nothing. I'm sure people are working on it... But there are none there RIGHT NOW.
Some of you need to chill out. I wasn't insulting you or your mom. I was asking a few questions and making an observation. Lighten up trolls.
I'll be picking up one of these this weekend, and aside from rooting and flashing calk's build (that man is amazing), I'm going to be teaching myself how Sammy does it's roms.
Does Sammy not release source code? Aren't they legally required to do this?

I really don't see anyone trolling you here. Looks like a pretty tame thread to me. My comment was probably the "harshest"if you could call it that. My main point was that you stated that no one was working on ICS and I was pointing out that it would be extremely difficult to miss the fact that several devs are in fact working on ICS, MIUI, CM7+9, AOSP and more TW custom ROM's.
I don't think any of us disagree that we wish there we more things going on, but I also think people forget that the EVO dev process was not overnight. Go back to the first EVO posts and you can see that it was several weeks from release before the customization started and a couple months before things really got going. And when the EVO came out, there was zero worthy competition. Pretty much everyone jumped on the EVO train.
I don't think that anyone here is upset by your post, but I do think it discounts the efforts that have been going on for well over a month to get ICS and the other goods to this device.
"There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on." I think that statement was the one that bothered me because it clearly showed that you were making assumptions without doing any research. And we have enough people in this forum doing plenty of that already. In fact, I have never seen more dev cooperation on any other device. Take a look at the ICS thread from the beginning and you'll see some amazing teamwork. Unfortunately derailed by demanding and entitled community members and leeches, but still alive and kicking in IRC and private spaces.
But I digress, the main point, you probably wouldn't be disappointed by picking up this phone. IMO, it is the best out right now and a quick look around will show you that the number of ROMs is about to hit a stride. The dates of release can show you that new work has just arrived and its beginning to look a lot like EVO-town in here.

Coming from the Evo 4G and writing guides and helping people on those forums for a while, I bought an E4GT.
Compared to the Evo just development wise on XDA, there aren't as many ROMs or as much development going on.
But phone wise, its a great phone and a great upgrade from the Evo 4G. Personally I use Launcher Pro/ADW so slapping that over TouchWiz is great.
Rooting is simple. There are auto roots going on and not as much of a pain as the Evo 4G. Also flashing things like Radios, ROMs, etc are faster as well because of the difference in phone speed and boot speed.
As for ICS, there was something in the works, but I think there hasn't been any much development on it.

An engadget article. It's being rolled out for the normal SGS-II in Europe. I can't post the links until I'm 8 posts old , so here's the quoted text from the article.
After that March 10th mishap, Samsung reaffirmed to us that it'd deliver Android 4.0 for its GT-I9100 Galaxy S II when it was darn good and ready -- well folks, the company appears ready. It's just announced both via Facebook and Twitter that the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade that so many have lusted after is now available and will begin its rollout to users in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea today, and will move onto other markets from there -- subject to carrier requirements, of course. Better yet, Samsung has affirmed that its Android 4.0 update for the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 will follow shortly. So, if you're one of the lucky ones to receive the upgrade, let us know how it fares for you in the comments below. Otherwise, feel free to keep clicking that update button.

EDIT : Oops , someone beat me to it. I was referring to the international SGS-II. I'm not sure how long it would take to reach T-mobile.
I'm sick of the same thing being covered 20 times every day.
The international Galaxy S2 has NOTHING to do with our phone. Yes the name is the same but the insides of the phone are all different. They might as well have called our phone something completely different as to not confuse people.
Nothing from the I9100 will be usable for us. Nothing. Hence, I reiterate my previous statement: We are not seeing ICS for some months to come. Sad I know.

The real frustration with this site is that people come here looking for more information and get greeted with condescending dickishness. Those guys posting about how awful it is to have to read threads asking about the update knew fully well what this thread was when they chose to come here.
I don't see how people can be so unaware of common sense that they would be surprised that a phone called the Samsung Galaxy S II getting the ICS update might confuse people who own a phone called the Samsung Galaxy S II into thinking they are getting an update to ICS.

By looking at the history, you can tell how long it usually takes for Samsung to deliver an update for carrier phones. As far as I can remember, for the T-Mo Galaxy S, it took them about 5 months to update to 2.2 AFTER the International Galaxy S received 2.2. This was about a month after google rolled out 2.3 via Nexus S.
The reason for the delay is because every carrier wants Samsung (and other manufacturers) to ensure that their bloatware works fine on their updated versions. And no matter how good Samsung's Hardware is, their software division is freaking slow!
So good luck waiting for 4.0. My guess is that it will be out by May/June/July/August.
Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec
Ok , thanks. But the real point of this thread was on HOW to UPDATE to ICS when it would finally come. It seems like everyone missed the point here. I don't really care when the update would come, that was never stated in the thread title nor did I ask for a date in my opening post.
I was fully aware that the "When is ICS going to arrive for T-mobile??!!" has been asked a hundred times, which is why I only asked HOW to update.

Well if ICS does come for our device in about 6 months.. you can always ODIN back to stock (check allgamers stickies) and wait for an OTA update, but you might have to wait for someone to exploit root access for 4.0... sooo i would wait until a dev creates a rooted stock ROM of 4.0.

Eh , the saddest part about it is how most failed to READ the thread. It was clearly stated that help was needed on HOW to update. The question "When will the update arrive?" was never stated in the opening post.
To answer the op, there's 2 ways to do it. first is to flash back to unrooted stock and wait for the push from tmo. Instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22881355
Second way is to wait for a deodexed or rooted version from a dev and just flash like a normal ROM.

even as a HOW question not the best question since nobody even knows the WHEN part
this isn't meant to entice any kind of flame war, but I was just kind of wondering since I just joined my g/f's plan on T-mobile, and she has the S2 and now I have the S3 .....her S2 only has maybe 2-3 options for ICS roms (besides the standard AOSP)
and I see we're already lagging behind other providers?
just wondering if thats kind of standard, or if things tend to speed up a bit.
or perhaps is there another well known outlet for roms besides XDA for T-mobile? I know I've been coming here since the OG Evo came out and haven't found anything better yet.
The Tmo S2 forums used to be filled with ROMs but the devs stopped deving one after another until there were only a few left.
I'm sure the S3 will have a lot of great devs. Just gotta give it time. Phone has only been out a month.
In my personal opinion, the number of ROMs available doesn't reflect whether a device has good development or bad development. In my experience from the 6 devices I've owned, the VAST majority of "development" is really just people taking the same ROM (usually either the stock one or a CM version) and removing or adding some apps and themeing it. That's not development, that's themeing and doing the same thing anyone else can do with Root Explorer.
It's about quality, not quantity, and with the devs that I've seen around so far it looks like we are in for some great quality ROMs.

I concur, if the hardware is solid then the development will follow. So far I'm impressed with the work for the gs3 and the speed at which things have already started being released.

WhitehawkX and RomanBB and a couple others and I think a couple of the other devs from the G2X forums are coming here, those alone mean extremely great things for us. Not to mention Cyanogen, (Steve Kondik) himself may very well own this phone as well. Mostly we already have pretty stable cm9 builds they want cm10 now. AOKP cm10 (whitehawkx and romanBB) have been working on that like crazy. Things will explode no worries. Oh and not to mention we already have Morfic and Faux as kernel devs, they support many devices and do amazing things.

I think their update was to remove features. I don't think you want that. :cyclops:
Lack of dev support? Really? As long as we have Steve Kondik (aka Cyanogen) on our side...we'll never lack in the dev dept. Not to mention...Morfic, Faux123, Romanbb...etc. They are, IMO, the best devs XDA has to offer.
Yeah, I don't understand your concern. We have THE premier developer for Android developing for our phones. You want more than Cyanogen himself to have this phone?

2 updates were useless the last one tho is good for the notification brightness control, I think is weird that we haven't get one yet, I feel like the us carriers will have jellybean gfirst before tmobile
To the OP Idk man the phone is new the evo didn't explode on development until after 3-4 months, and what I'm waiting the most besides cm10 stable is myns rom, he most likely make it compatible with all us carriers and likes his roms a lot, and the themes he uses it is my favorite so far

Cyanogen
Eugene
Romanbb
Faux123
^So far the list isn't long but it's quality over quantity in this instance. Although, I am curious as to whether or not Faux, Eurgene, and Cyanogen own the Tmobile S3 or not.

Cyanogen is awesome..but I have no service at my house..so AOSP is out for me next to getting wifi calling working on AOSP
so...while im not saying that we dont have quality dev...its nice to have some variety...for a variety of reasons.

TBH most of the variety comes from rehashed ROMs that were already out...Just saying.
I'm just hoping we get MIUI JB soon, I can't wait.

WhitehawkX and Cyanogen as well.
It's seriously like the all-star team of devs working on ROMs for the T Mobile variant.

+1 i agree with op
& I wouldn't consider cyanogen/aosp as a tmobile rom chus there Roms are out for other phones as well and if you look at the cyanogenmod site our device is not even supported on there the international one is..
If you look at the tmobile android development we have like 2 Roms that's actually ment for our tmobile galaxy s3 but theyre not even being updated, team sonic rom was updated on 7/20 but that's about it

I would agree. Even though there's a great lineup of developers as already mentioned, there's a lot less activity in the development section than other carriers. I know others have mentioned quality over quantity but other sections aren't lacking in quality even with the additional rom options.
And since the stock rom is pretty solid, I actually don't mind seeing more tweaked stock roms. Both for customization and optimization.
However, I'm still satisfied with current Sonic rom and as some have mentioned, this is the first phone I've owned that I haven't felt the need to flash something multiple times a week in order for the phone to perform properly.
Samsung did a great job this round producing a phone that performs great out of the box. It only gets better from here and with stock performance being what it is, I can be patient while developers get cooking.
unfortunately there's going to be a chilling effect on AOSP / CM dev'ing until this lost IMEI issue can be understood..
