Can someone please help me. I am googling, xda, phandroid, htcevohacks and not finding any clear cut answer to this question: Can i root my evo running 1.32.651.6 (SD update)? i see there are ways to root with the new update 1.47........., so since i cant find any clear cut answers regarding 1.32.651.6 should i accept the update to 1.47.651.1? I am so confused some people say they have used toast method to root 1.32.651.6 and others who say that it is impossible, can someone please help me. Thank you
Regular simpleroot
I almost feel bad...all I saw was ".6" (Thinking it was referencing 2.2) and I was about to facepalm.
Some have had problems with the original simpleroot (I was one of them)...go here:

I was a total Android/Linux noob when I got the Evo. I came from WinMo and as far as modding goes, it felt like I went from Champ to Chump. Read, make mistakes, read some more, fix your mistakes, and learn. It doesn't get any better than that. Just remember, we are a community that is here to help, not do it for you.
Finally ROOTED!!
OK guys i have rooted my EVO thanks to u guys. I have installed Froyo DeOdexed RevE.1, I have downloaded rom manager from the market. Now do i always have to wipe every time i load a new rooted rom? Also do i have to go into the shell with evo connected to PC to get to the menu for wiping and loading roms? Do i also have to load the updated radios and wimax or do the rooted roms come with them already? Many thanks.

Wiping is advised when flashing a new ROM, unless you are upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM (or if the author says no-wipe is required). Wiping is almost always required if you are changing between different ROM.
You can enter recovery by turning phone off, pressing power + volume down, or booting into recovery from apps such as Rom Manager, Spare Parts, Quickboot.
OK. Plain and simple I just started using Android and I got the Advanced Task Killer to kill dumb stuff i dont use. All day long i check to see if i have to close any apps since none of the apps that run on the phone have a quit option in the menu so its just sitting there eating up resources. I have the froyo version running now and its rooted, despite all the guides on here i couldnt get it rooted. Its a white evo with the 3 point screen, i bought it on black fryday. rooted it by monday somehow. basically bricked it and then had to flash with the stock signed ruu from ppcgeeks stock rom db. then found a pc36img.zip that actually worked for step 2 and did unrevoked forever.zip via evo recovery.zip from pc with usb cable cuz none of your guides worked then rooted with unrevoked 3.21. stupid clockworkmod recovery doesnt work for anything, the other one doesnt work the same but atleast i can shut off the phone to flash from fastboot.
anyway stock rom keeps running random apps i dont use or even open. i want that to stop, dont know how to do it cuz im an android noob.
second i cant flash a rom cuz clockworkmod doesnt work at all
cant flash a universal kernel cuz clockworkmod doesnt work and the other recovery does work for that but then android doesnt load.
heres what i want.
stock rom without the random apps starting up all the time
modded kernel to overclock and undervolt and that fun stuff
and a usefull recovery utility
i dont want some duded up rom with everything missing and a bunch of pretty colors and stuff that doesnt appeal to me. i also dont want a rom that loses all sort of communication functionality to gain speed of how fast the touch screen scrolls. just STOCK but to have only what i use run and update and whatever you prolly know what i mean.
i wanted the netarchy kernel but it borks my fone everytime i try and flash it.
someone tell me why everything that is universal for evos does not work on my evo.
anyway thats what i need help with and i would greatly appreciate it.
reply here or pm me and ill give you my email.
thanx,
Josh

STOP using a task killer. Do a search on here, and you will find they are not needed with Android. Actually ,using a task killer will use MORE battery then not using one, as android will just keep re-opening the programs into cache. And its exactly that, a cache. those programs you see arent running at all.

first off ur prolly gonna get flamed by someone just giving u a heads up... as the previous user stated DONT USE MANUAL TASK KILLERS where u initiate task termination... android has its own built in and will kill off tasks as memory is needed... it may not kill off what u want when u want it but its doing its job.. if u want more agressive termination use autokiller or minfree manager from the market. Both are free and kill tasks automatically by a memory threshold that u set(agressive, mild etc.) About ur rooting issues i would go back to square one and ruu back to stock unrooted with pc36img.zip thru hboot(shut down phone, hold volume down button then push power) once u get re-rooted using latest unrevoked, get ur phone rebooted and go to ur app drawer of watever rom u currently have installed and go to rom manager... select flash clockwork recovery(even though its already installed) once it flashed u will have the option towards the bottom of the rom manager menu to flash alternate recoveries... select AmonRA. That will solve ur clockwork recovery problems because clockwork has been known to not execute certain tasks like dalvik cache wiping. AmonRA works exactly as stated if ur rooting process was done correctly. I dont mess with flashing from fast boot because that requires an engineering SPL/hboot which if im not mistaken, to go back to stock for warranty or service, is more steps required because the stock 2.2 rom is only compatible with a certain range of hboot versions and engineering or modified versions r not supportive of the stock rom because of security issues. As far as ROMS go any sense rom will have lots of apps loading even when u don't use them which is why i dont use sense... if u kill off a lot of those "unwanted" apps u may be closing an app thats required to be active to activate another app so thats why i dont recommend manually killing apps... if u like sense i think myns is by far the most popular and everything works. the UI is heavily modded with lots of colors nd animations... may not be the best for u but flash it nd try it if u dont like it flash something else that doesnt have the added stuff... as far as non sense goes Cyanogen Mod which is wat im running is prolly the most popular Android Open Source Project rom meaning no htc bloatware loaded on top of it(any non htc phone with android like motorola droids have this type of rom preinstalled). Again may not be for u so flash nd try... there are also a few hybird roms which have sense ui removed from them so they look like stock android rom or non htc but stiill have htc framework built into them so they are not completely htc free. about kernels that depends on the style of rom ur using (sense or aosp) developers will post whether they function with both or one or the other u just have to do some research.
I didn't read what every one else posted so some of your questions might be answered already. If you follow the directions from start to finish on unrevoked you should not have an issue. I did it the other day for a replacement phone I got and it took about 10 minutes. You need to be sure to use Amon_ra for recover because its the best for several reasons the main reasons is because when you do a nand backup it saves the wimax keys. After your rooted here are a couple of links.

Don't forget to wipe dav and cash before flashing a new rom.
on the netarchy toasty kernel thread it said to check to see what screen you have before flashing cuz some of them dont work. so i checked and mine is the 3 point multi touch not the 5 point epson i guess. which is why im thinking it doesnt load before it loads the system so i get a kernel panic and it just reboots into recovery which by the way i am using the ra 1.1.8 or whatever you said i should use. i just selected custom recovery in unrevoked and by the way i have full root access cuz i used root explorer to delete all the sprint apps and amazon.

Ok, basically I discovered cyanogen 7 about a week ago and was pure ''
well since then I have gone from knowing nothing at all to having a rooted 2.2 (stock rom) GSM desire (A8181 - whatever that actually means), S -ON
I rooted with unrevoked and have clockworkmod 2.something.
now from what i understand I need to S -OFF so that I can use a program (run on the phone from ROM manager) to upgrade clockwork to 3.x then (correct me if i'm wrong, I'm a total noob dont forget xD) I can use ROM manager to download CM7 and instal all on the phone?
is that right? if not could someone please correct me
I've done a NANDroid backup
i think thats all i want to say :')
I get confused when browsing forums because people talk about things, especially abbreviations, that mean nothing to me xD
Thanks for the help guys

not an expert on the S-OFF side of things but ive been flashing various ROMS without ever needing to S-OFF.
Been using LeeDroid and now GingerVillain (and tried a few more along the way).
For info the GingerVillain has CM7 stuff in it and is pretty stable. Once you have flashed GingerVillain once it has its own setup for flashing updates/patches etc.
But you are right to always take a nandroid backup first. the one time i forgot my flash screwed up

That's sound advice because I'm not set on cyanogen however I don't know how I'd go about flashing GingerVillain :')
And how sure are you it's alright with S-ON because I don't like the sound of a £250 paperweight
thanks though
well ive never changed my S status .....
Download ROM Manager from the Market. Make sure you install clockworkmod recovery (using ROM Manager). Backup current ROM (using ROM Manager). Download GingerVillain latest version. Flash ROM from SD card (using ROM Manager)
Any future updates to GingerVillain you can use the 'Villain Setup' utility that you will find in your app list once the Flash is complete.
If its your first ever flash be aware that you should make sure the battery level is high, and that it may take several minutes (so dont panic !)
As long as you backup first everything should be fine (although there is always some risk).
Once you have finished your first Flash it will seem like you were worried about nothing
Oh ... and if you would prefer to stay with Froyo the LeeDroid ROM has a very good A2SD version
that sounds.... easy
thanks
and ROM manager says i already have CwM 2.5.0.7 -- so thats all cool, yeah?
Will my NANDroid backup count or shall I just do it again in ROM manager?
and I'm guessing I can download GV from within ROM manager?
sorry to ask all the newb questions but i'd rather be sure lol
Ive never bothered downloading ROMs from within ROM Manager but I believe you can.
As for the backup Id copy your existing backup to your PC and do another. You can never have too many backups
The backup will be in a sub folder on your SD card in a 'clockworkmod' directory.
oh ... and it generally is easy its just summing up courage for the first one.
Might be worth using titanium backup or my backup pro to take a copy of your apps if you dont want to lose where you have got to on Angry Birds etc
you can then restore them to your new ROM
Thanks
my phone is off to charge quicker at the minute then i'll give it a shot
one last question to be extra annoying
if i can't download GV within ROM man.
..could you provide a download link for me to manually slap in on my SD please
Seriously though, I'm really grateful!
They are all under the Desire Android dev sub forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880465
FINALLY about to do it and I've just thought..
Im on clockwork 2.x
don't i need 3.x for ext4 which makes gingerbread more stable?
also, ROM manager didn't have GV so i downloaded the zip from the link you gave me and extracted it to the root of my SD
rom manager doesnt find the image file, only the 3 folders
..and i feel really stupid :')
[edit 5 mins later]
NOT unzipping it was a better idea, its working now
...my excuse is that im learning
Good thing it worked for you. Some users have reported a host of problems flashing ROMs from ROM Manager. I'd advice you to do it the tried-and-tested old way: through Recovery (which in your case is ClockworkMod).
If you decide to repartition, ROM Manager can do that too, but that's not too advisable either, as some have reported problems with that method, and ROM Manager only allows up to 512Mb partitions, if I remember right.
funny that ^
ROM manager ended up leaving me on the white screen with the green HTC logo untill i pulled the battery
i did it through recovery and it worked a charm
just went through ALL of the settings and i LOVE it
there are a few things i dont like but i'm yet to try different themes etc yet
I'm a happy bunny!
Glad you managed the Flash OK
Never experienced any problems with ROM Manager myself ....
Thing is, now you have recovery and a nadroid backup you are fairly safe. Anything goes wrong you can recover to a previous image from recovery
I always keep a nadroid on my SD card just in case
Of course if you try S-OFF and all sorts of HBOOT changes then you expose yourself to more risk apparently so be careful.
Happy Flashing
oh ... and if you are on GingerVillain go to the Villain Setup and flash the adfree add on. For me it always takes 2 attempts to work, which is strange, but adfree is great
and on GingerVillain you also might want to flash the 'new market' add-on too ...
.... and then there are the Kernels to try too
A week from now you will wonder what you were worried about and will be flashing daily

I'm already wondering it
I though last night (well, 4.20 this morning) that I might bite the bullet and try flashing cyanogen
-which i did with sucess
then downloaded the google add on pack and added that
I felt all happy like
onr of my friends did his hero at the same time too because he was interested when i showed him
I think for now I'll keep cyanogen, but i've left it in note form: no homescreens properly set up, very few apps etc, until i find a ROM that I really like the look of
I'll keep ginger in mind though, especially as i hadn't tried the stuff you mentioned above
Hi there,
Saw the thread and thought i could help you with some information.
S-ON/OFF refers to Signature Verification on or off. S-ON stops things that the phone manufactuer do not want changed. It is totally separate to Root access to android. The main advantage of turning S-OFF is that you can change the size of the partitions on the device to give you more space for you apps. Basically playing around here can be dangerous if you are not aware of what it's actually doing at all times.
The great news is that as you have already discovered, you definately don't need to play with S-OFF to flash ROMs. Just root access and a recovery. The ClockworkMod 2.0.5.7 that comes with the Unrevoked root method should is fine for flashing all ROMs from ROM manager or by booting into recovery. But if any of your ROM instructions call for later versions you can just store the later version zip on your SD and use the older recovery to flash the newer version. It will be usable until your phone re-boots. You can't flash the image of the new recovery without S-OFF
Glad to have you experimenting in the community. I think this sort of stuff is exactly why Android is excellent. Apple hate that people Jailbreak their phones but Google openly encourage this development!
Thanks Jimmy
I flashed GV again (because i'm getting a bit carried away now ;D) and tried to install new market, adfree and a 3d desire bootlogo. I've got debugging and unknown apps enabled but it says there is a problem downloading?
Any idea why?
hmmmm.... not seen that one. Have you tried wifi and 3G ? whats the exact message ?
Did you wipe between flashes ? you dont normally need to do this when flashing updates (eg gingervillain 2.0 to 2.1) but when flashing between different ROMs (eg CM to GV) then you should do a full wipe ....

Great summary! I definitely recommend s-off as I found it as easy as root.
I have close to 300mb free on internal and usually over 200mb free ram.
You can also change the HTC quietly brilliant (should be "loudly" if you ask me!) splash screen after s-off, and write to any of your device partitions, including /system and /data while booted, saving some time using advanced for certain tasks.

Is that just the market message telling you there is a problem downloading?
My best guess is that there is a setting in GV that allows direct install to the SD-ext partition for apps. Do you have an EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card?
When ROMs talk about A2SD, Data2EXT and Data2SD the EXT partition is required.
have a look at the blog for the Starburst ROM for desire for a great tutorial (can't post an external link in here)
It is for a specific ROM but the process is the same. I would recommend using EXT3 because it is the most compatible with ROMS.
See how you go with that.
Ok guys I have the dinc with miui right now, I like it but the no video mms thing that won't work is killing me. I was told about the synergy rom and have been looking into it. How do I go about dl the rom to my phone as before I just use rom manager premium and it does it for me? and also how do I get hboot .92 upgrade something i never heard of doing. My laptop to phone skills suck lol it didn't work well before and took alot of times to do it but im ready now I just ask to get the info needed to put this rom on my dinc since there are no qr codes or rom manager dl to do so.
Which is the easiest, fastest rom for the DINC?
To find out what HBoot you have, long press the power button, press restart > Bootloader. It will bring you to a white screen with 3 android guys on skateboards on the bottom. Well the text on the top will say HBoot: x.xxx or whatever. You need the one that says .92. I THINK (but I might be wrong), that if you're on MIUI you should have the .92 bootloader anyway. If you need it, get it here http://dougpiston.com/files/Hboot/PB31IMG-hboot-0.92.0000.zip
Now as for putting things from your computer to phone. Plug your phone into your computer and turn on USB Mass Storage (it should show up when on your phone when it's plugged in). Now in your computer you should see your MicroSD card. Literally just drag and drop the files onto your sd card and now they're on the SD card!
Follow the synergy instructions if you want to install it to your phone! It's quite easy once you get the hang of it!
Ok I tried before that way to un root my phone but it kept saying no file but I could see it there, the same pm file you described I think. What is the best rom for this phone that allows swype and video mms to work?
i have the right hboot .92. are you sure no one has put it on rom manager yet lmao jk. Is this rom the gb rom and will swype work that I have installed? what are the main issues with this rom? and how often is it updated? Does any of the roms do the OTA updates.

I have not tried every rom, but most roms with the exception of MIUI and some assorted GB Sense roms will not have working video mms. Any rom should be able to run swype no problems.

Synergy is GB based, yes. As far as I know, it is updated very frequently by many different developers. But they just pushed the first stable release 4 days ago. Download here, http://www.wupload.com/file/78303202/Synergy-8-5-11-RLS1-Incredible-signed.zip put it on your sd card, go in to recovery, backup if you want to, wipe everything and install the zip. Ok why dont the video mms work on most roms but do on stock roms? and what is meant by pushing the mms.apk as stated on the miui forums.
I just got my hands on the dinc. I am coming from a rooted D1. Unforuntulny the dinc has been updated and has s-on..
even searched for s-on Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. I love it lol...
Anyways, if i have read correctly if s-on is enabled, I am just SOL in rooting my phone and using custom roms, themes etc till someone finds a workaround , correct?
Also all my game and app data on my d1, anyway to move it over to the dinc?
Updated to GB 2.3.4 and S-On? If so, I found THIS thread a few days ago that seems to be working. Before you do any of that..make sure your SD card is formatted to FAT32.
Apps yes...you can move those over to your Inc. Data would not be a good idea. The data is from a totally different phone so you would cause a lot of issues by doing restoring any app data. My friend who moved on to an Inc from a DX tried to do it and got FC's all over the place.
Good luck and enjoy your new phone!

I looked that over and it looked like it should get you back to s-off, rooted froyo. It's a LOT like the method jcase developed for the Tbolt before Revolutionary. If you can get s-off, you're good to go. Flash a custom recovery and flash a rooted ROM. Should be that simple.
thanks for the info!
Yeah, that thread works.
Thanks again guys, i got it to work last night.. Now i just need to decide on a rom? Any suggestions? I loved chevyNo1 on D1 :/
Your going to love the incredible compared to the og droid, everything is so much snappier, and battery life will increase too.
I'm not a sense guy at all but McD's ROMS are super nice.
I really liked chevy's ROMs too. CM7.1 stable and the latest incredikernel on 10/12 by Tiny will get you started in the right direction if you want to stick with AOSP or if you want something more barebones grab IncDeck 1.3 Final... I just went back to CM7.1 because I felt I got a little better batterylife.
Will give them a try. I did download cm7.1 and on re boot after install it gets stuck on the boot loader. Do I need to do a complete wipe or something ?

Yeah, complete wipe is recommended if you're not coming from an earlier CM7.

Ok I'm a little rusty cause on the d1 I never had to wipe.. in the Rom manager just select clear and wipe and that should do the trick ? I got my games backed up so that isn't a issue. But all settings and such will be lost ,correct?
Thanks

Personally, I never use Rom Manager. I flash through recovery; if you use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery, do a factory reset from there and then flash and you should be good.
Ok cool.. thanks for the quick replies.
McD's ROMS i havent seen any of those. I loaded CM7.1 Very simliar to chevyno1's rom.. Trying something different, miui right now, its not bad, reminds me of the iphone though.. Any other suggestions?
I strongly recommend against ROM manager, too. Any dev worth his salt tends to recommend against flashing through ROM Manager because it doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to. It's been a problem child for a long time now. When performing functions done through recovery, it's best to go directly into recovery to perform them. I think the same can be said for the bootloader.
Sorry i meant clockwork, dont know why i keep on saying rom manager. Can anyone help me with roms or should i post a new post on it?
I kind of dig miui but dont like the sms keyboard layout. Its like cm7 and i really like the stock dinc set up. With my big fingers i get less typos with its set up.. Any suggestions?
Here is a list of Dinc ROMs. I personally recommend CM7, but if you like HTC Sense, go for Runny Revolution 3D. Great Sense ROM.
